Cannes Review: It Was Just an Accident is Jafar Panahi’s Fiercest, Most Incendiary Takedown of Iran’s Regime
Image
If you were handed over the man who destroyed your life and those of countless others––a psychopath who tortured, raped, and murdered in the name of a tyrannical system––what would you do? Would you exact revenge or do the impossible––forgive and set him free? It Was Just an Accident, Jafar Panahi’s first film since his release from prison in Iran, hinges on that excruciating dilemma. The story is easy enough to summarize; its emotional wallop defies facile description. In an unexpected stroke of luck, four Iranians who did time for protesting the regime manage to abduct the guard responsible for the unspeakable atrocities they suffered behind bars. Having knocked him unconscious, they shove him in a van and travel around, wondering what to do. The whole journey spans less than a day. By the time it wraps, Accident feels like content under pressure. Panahi welds scorching...

‘Ransom Canyon’ Book Vs. Show Differences: From Quinn & Staten’s Love Story To Yancy Grey’s Plot
Image
Spoiler Alert: This piece spoils Ransom Canyon on Netflix.

Netflix’s new contemporary Western romance and drama series Ransom Canyon is based on the first book in a ten-book series by Jodi Thomas.

Showrunner and creator April Blair stuck to the first book, which shares its title with the show while also expanding the world and ensemble to include more for certain characters only briefly mentioned in the book.

“We only used the first book, and it’s really the foundation of the series, a very important one, and we have retained, a lot of easter eggs for fans of the book series, but we definitely made it our own,” Blair told Deadline in an interview ahead of the series launch on Netflix. “In Jodi’s series, each novel introduces a whole new cast of characters. It’s almost kind of anthology like, and some...

Squid Game puts up shocking number in Netflix's second-half of 2024 results
Image
You know Netflix is popular, and you know several different series, especially original series, have an immense global appeal. In the second half of 2024 alone, 20 series had at least 25 million views each. 77 movies had at least 25 million views, based on the results Netflix released this week.

But one series stands out above all others. That would be Squid Game Season 2. It led all series in views (and also amassed 619.9 million viewing hours). The magic is that the second season was not released until December 26, which means, of course, that Squid Game got all those views in six days. Clearly, people were ready for the release.

The show coming in second might be a bit more surprising. The first season of The Perfect Couple, starring Nicole Kidman, finished in second place. Sure, we knew it was popular, but that popular? Now we know.

What were the most-viewed movies and series on...

The Penguin premiere gets great ratings in line with The Last of Us, House of the Dragon
Image
Let's talk about TV ratings! What shows are doing well and which are tanking? The new hot show on the block this week is The Penguin, a spinoff of The Batman starring a heavily made-up Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobb, Batman's nemesis in the making. Critics, including us, love the gritty, Sopranos-esque crime drama, and it looks like viewers are right there with us. Per Variety, HBO says that The Penguin nabbed 5.3 million viewers for its premiere episode within four days of its release across both HBO and Max. That's better than the season 4 premiere of Succession and the season 2 premiere of The White Lotus, two other top-tier HBO dramas, although below the take for the season 4 premiere of True Detective: Night Country. And The Penguin got the best numbers for a new series on Max since 2022's The Last of Us.

Those are the numbers from HBO. Samba TV,...

Netflix's Trending New Show Is Based On Shocking True Stories, But It Still Must Be Seen To Be Believed

Netflix recently released a show titled The Accident, and its bizarre premise based on shockingly real events is helping the Mexican drama rise in popularity. Since releasing on August 21st, The Accident has dominated the streamer's Top 10 list despite not much fanfare ahead of release. The Spanish-language show is a 10-episode drama thriller that follows a horrific tragedy at a young boy's birthday party in Santa Cruz, Mexico. The Accident's characters make up a group of family and friends affected by the unexpected event, but the group fractures when justice is sought. Image
Mayor of Kingstown lead actor Jeremy Renner reveals how "a little bit scared" he is about getting back to work on the hit crime drama following his near-fatal snowplow accident last year, though he relishes the challenges.

Speaking with People while filming a Super Bowl Lviii commercial, Renner addressed returning to film Season 3 of Mayor of Kingstown, the first project he's worked on since the accident at his Nevada home last January. However, he's trying to take things one step at a time. “I don't know if I'm looking forward to it. Again, I try to just do everything kind of step by step here. That's one foot in front of the other one. Then you're walking," he said. "[I'm] scared of slipping and falling."

Spielberg, Scorsese, PTA give their TCM picks for September
Image
The same season that Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, and Paul Thomas Anderson took it virtually upon themselves to help save Turner Classic Movies following a series of layoffs that was pointing to what could have been its demise, the trio are showing just how hands-on they’ll be. For September, the trio has each compiled a list of recommendations that will air on TCM throughout the month. From melodramas and film noirs to tantalizing tales and giant ants, let’s see what Spielberg, Scorsese and PTA have to recommend.

Steven Spielberg’s September TCM picks are: Douglas Sirk’s Imitation of Life (1959), the sci-fi monster movie Them! (1954), Alfred Hitchcock’s The Wrong Man (1956), and two Vincente Minnelli films, musical Meet Me in St. Louis (1944) and The Bad and the Beautiful (1952).

Martin Scorsese went a bit more obscure for his TCM picks, selecting British drama Madonna of the Seven Moons (1945), pre-code...

David Zaslav
Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg & Paul Thomas Anderson Share Their TCM Picks to Watch This September
David Zaslav
Following David Zaslav’s despicable gutting of Turner Classic Movies earlier this summer––one of many anti-art maneuvers the money-hungry Warner Bros. Discovery CEO and president has commandeered in his embarrassing, hopefully short-lived tenure––he hoped to curry some favor by bringing together the holy trinity of filmmakers to guide the future of the channel. Now, after a few weeks on the job of “network advisors,” Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, and Paul Thomas Anderson have shared their picks of what to see on the channel this month.

The first two mentioned filmmakers provided videos of their recommendations, with the Killers of the Flower Moon director recommending the Boris Karloff-led Isle of the Dead, Two Sisters from Boston, Victor Fleming’s melodrama Red Dust, and Joseph Losey’s Accident.

Spielberg recommends a pair of Vincente Minnelli films, Meet Me in St. Louis and The Bad and the Beautiful, Douglas Sirk’s Imitation of Life,...

Here Are Martin Scorsese's Personal Recommendations For Classic Movies As TCM's New Advisor
Image
To briefly remind readers of the saga:

Back in June of 2023, it was announced that the leadership behind Turner Classic Movies, a long-beloved curator of cinema from Hollywood's Golden Age and beyond, would be laid off. VP of enterprises and strategic partnerships Genevieve McGillicuddy, senior VP of programming and content strategy Charles Tabesh, executive vice president and general manager Pola Changnon, marketing VP Dexter Fedor, and VP of studio production Anne Wilson all lost their jobs. The future of TCM was suddenly up in the air. This not only outraged fans of classic cinema but threw some of Hollywood's most beloved filmmakers into a panic. Was David Zaslav, the CEO of the beleaguered Warner Bros. Discovery nixing the entire TCM brand the same way he did with so much of the films and TV shows on HBO Max? Perhaps Zaslav, having already accrued a horrendous reputation for a long series of consumer-hostile business decisions,...

Watch Martin Scorsese Give His First Pick from TCM’s Lineup — and Learn Paul Thomas Anderson’s Own Recs
Image
Earlier this week, IndieWire exclusively debuted a video of Steven Spielberg sharing his inaugural picks as an advisor to TCM: five films he chose from the beloved network’s September 2023 lineup. Now his fellow advisors Martin Scorsese and Paul Thomas Anderson have gotten in on the action too. Watch the video of Scorsese recommending one of TCM’s September titles above: it’s about Arthur Crabtree’s “Madonna of the Seven Moons,” a melodrama produced by Gainsborough Pictures in 1945.

Gainsborough Pictures was a U.K. studio renowned for a series of highly-charged melodramas in the 1940s built around actors like James Mason, Margaret Lockwood, and Dennis Price. None of the films are connected plot-wise, but they do share many of the same creatives in front and behind the camera as well as a similar mood.

In the video above, Scorsese says of “Madonna of the Seven Moons,” which airs September 20 at 2:00pm Et,...
