A dramatic and pretentious film with a few characters and a lot of dancing as well as Flamenco music

Antonio Esteve (Antonio Gades , father of actress Maria Esteve) is a young dancer of humble origin who falls for the beautiful Rocío (La Polaca) , but he marries a wealthy woman called Elena (Maria Cuadra) . Nowadays , he moves in an upper-class and lush ambient , married to a gorgeous girl and wants to erase his lower-class origins . But he is really upsettling for the bitter treason he commited against his best friend called Juán (Daniel Martín who starred several Spaghetti westerns ) .

Sensitive but slow-moving drama dealing with a triangular love story that results in fateful consequences . Cast is pretty good , such as : Antonio Gades as a troublesome young who has managed to become a known flamenco dancer ; Daniel Martin as his best friend , La Polaca as their love interest and Maria Quadra as a bourgeois lady to whom Antonio does not pay much attention , while living at a comfortable , luxurious environment. And a decent support cast with brief appearances from José María Prada , the presenter José Luis Uribarri , the American John Clark and the expert dancer Cristina Hoyos . It displays an evocative and adequate cinematography in black and white by cameraman Luis Cuadrado , shot on location in Madrid , Torremolinos , and Marbella . And a lot of music , as Pop performed by The Shakers Band as Flamenco , and dancing splendidly Antonio Gades . Including the following songs : Danza del chivato by Gustavo Pitaluga , Música ye-ye by Los Shakers and No volveré performed by Los Shakers .

It is well starred by Antonio Gades who was first dancer of the Spanish Classic Ballet and creating his own dancing team . He played various hit shows , the first was Ensueño (1961) , Maurice Ravel's Bolero (63) and his last theatrical success was Fuenteovejuna (1994) . His first movie was ¨Los Tarantos¨(63) , along with Daniel Martin , by Francisco Rovira Veleta who also directed him in ¨Manuel de Falla's Amor Brujo¨ (67) . Later on , he stars ¨Con el viento Solano¨ (65) and ¨Los días del pasado¨ (1977) , along with his wife Marisol , being directed by Mario Camus . Shortly after, he made a prestigious musical trilogy by the famous director Carlos Saura , along with the dancer girl Cristina Hoyos , : ¨Bodas de sangre¨(81) , ¨Carmen¨ (83) and ¨El amor Brujo¨(86) and the theatrical equivalent on stage plays : ¨Bodas de Sangre¨ , ¨Carmen¨ and ¨Fuego¨

The picture was well produced by Elias Querejeta , considered to be one of the most prestigious producers of the late dictatorship of General Francisco Franco . He was a professional soccer player for San Sebastián's Real Sociedad and directed two documentaries, one about San Sebastián and the other about soccer. In 1963, he moved to Madrid and became a producer. He produced important works of many of the most challenging filmmakers of the New Spanish Cinema. In the waning days of Francoist dictatorship in the 1960s and '70s, Spain began to relax its censorship policies. Querejeta saw the opportunity for a liberalized cinema and took advantage, though he occasionally went too far even for the more permissive government. Creating his own production Company : Elias Querejeta P.C. , surrounded by a solid team : producer assistant Primitivo Alvaro , editor Pablo G. Del Amo , cameraman Luis Cuadrado and musician Luis De Pablo . Querejeta wrote some screenplays , such as : Los Inocentes by J.A. Bardem , El próximo otoño , De cuerpo presente and El ultimo encuentro . Elias produced important filmmakers as Carlos Saura : Peppermint Frappe , Stress es tres tres , Jardín de delicias , Ana y los lobos , La prima Angelica , Los ojos vendados, Elisa vida mia, Mamá cumple 100 años , Dulces horas ; Moxto Armendariz in : Tasio, Cartas a Alou , 27 horas , Historias del Kronen ; Fernando Leon de Aranoa in : Familia and Barrio ; Jaime Chavarri : A un Dios Desconocido , Dedicatoria ; Ricardo Franco : Pascual Duarte ; Victor Erice : El sur ; Paco Lucio : El aliento del diablo ; Manuel Gutiérrez Aragon : Feroz ; Jorge Grau : Noche de verano ; Claudio Guerin : Los Desafíos . Father of fimmaker Gracia Querejeta to whom produced : Una estación de paso , El ultimo viaje de Robert Rylands . Querejeta also financed international co-productions such as : Diabolica malicia by Andrea Bianchi , Belleza negra by James Hill , La Letra Escarlata by Vin Wenders , La banda de Jaidier by Volker Vogeler , and La Ciudad de los niños perdidoos by Junet and Caro .

The motion picture was professionally directed by Antonio Eceiza , though it results to be a little bit boring and tiring . It was presented in Cannes Film Festival 1967 , and Nominee Palme d'Or Antonio Eceiza . He began as a writer including notorious scripts , such as : Los inocentes (1962) by J.A. Bardem , and 100 caballeros (65) by Vittorio Cottafavi . Eventually, he worked as a director assistant and made shorts produced by his friend Elias Querejeta . His film debut was a failed realistic story : El próximo otoño (1963) , following : De cuerpo presente (65) , The last meeting (66) and Las Secretas intenciones (1970) with screenplay written by Rafael Azcona . After that , he dedicated to make spots and for politics causes he emigrated Mexico where filmed : Mina viento de libertad and Complot Mongol . He returned Spain where made his last movies : Dias de humo (89) about the problematic situation on Basque Country and Felicidades Tovarich (95) about relationship between a communist militant/Francisco Rabal and his grand-daughter . Rating . 6.5/10 .
