Goofy but kinda funny 1960's stuff

I'm pretty confident this wasn't an Oscar contender in it's day, but it was actually kind of funny in a retro sort of way. College students? Most of the guys in this movie look old enough to be parents of college students. Sit back, don't expect too much, and stay tuned for the bear at the end of the movie.

From the Beach to the Ski Slopes

This film opens at a small college where several male students express their frustrations about their inability to date certain female students because "Susan Benchley" (Chris Noel), the leader of the main sorority, has discouraged these women from doing so. Eventually, one of the male students comes up with a plan to invite a beach bum named "Ronnie Duke" (Gary Clarke) to come and visit due to his reputation for being able to seduce every woman he meets. They believe that once he focuses on Susan, she will yield and then soften her stance, allowing her sorority members to do the same. What they don't count on, however, is the intense jealousy of another male student named "John" (Steve Franken), who is also attracted to Susan and is willing to do whatever it takes to keep Ronnie away from her. Now, instead of revealing more, I will simply say that this film was made during a time when "Beach Party movies" were quite popular. Consequently, the setting occasionally shifted from the beach to winter ski lodges to capitalize on that popularity, while the general plot, which usually incorporates humor and romance involving attractive young women, remained largely unchanged. These films frequently include several aspiring rock-and-roll bands to enhance the atmosphere, and this film is no exception, with "Jay and the Americans" probably standing out the most, in my opinion. Even so, while the plot of this film closely resembles that of many others in its category, it successfully preserves the overall fun atmosphere better than some of the others, and I have rated it accordingly.

Fun on the ski slopes.

Most of the male population at a college with ski slopes needs the help of a surf bum to defrost the Dean's secretary. The secretary has the female students keenly aware that most boys want only one thing from them. If the secretary can be made to appear to be 'easy', maybe; just maybe, the girls will follow.

Music provided by The Beau Brummels, The Astronauts, Dick & DeeDee and Jay & The Americans. These musical interludes may be the only redeeming scenes in the movie.

The cast includes: Gary Clarke, Chris Noel, Steve Franken and Les Brown, Jr.

Music is good, but the plot has melted.

It snowballs, all right...

When a group of guys get off the bus near the Alpine ski lodge, they smile and bow to the passing girls, who pass them right up. Turns out, all the girls are part of a sorority from nearby Alpine College and under the thumb of their housemother, who has a low opinion of the opposite sex. Universal's no-sex-on-the-slopes teen comedy apes the "Beach Party" pics from American-International, which by this time had started to fade in popularity themselves. Notable only for the musical appearances of Jay and the Americans, Dick and Dee Dee, The Beau Brummels, and cutie-pie singing duo Jackie and Gayle (incongruously singing "Our Love's Gonna Snowball" in bathing suits at the beach!). Stick with Columbia's "Winter A-Go-Go" from 1965--at least that one had a legitimate acting lead in James Stacy. * from ****
