Alain Delon, one of the biggest international movie stars of all time, has passed away at 88. The actor, who’d been in poor health in recent years, is widely considered one of the most iconic French stars ever. First rising to fame as part of a new crop of actors during the French New Wave, Delon was the first person to play Patricia Highsmith’s Ripley in Purple Noon, while also starring in classics such as The Leopard, Rocco and His Sisters and many more.
Yet, it was his role as the cold, calculating hitman in Jean-Pierre Melville’s Le Samourai which remains the part he’s arguably best known for. Playing an impeccably dressed killer named Jeff, who is double-crossed by his employers, pretty much every hitman movie in the last fifty years owes a debt of gratitude to his performance. Mickey Gilley, who ran one of the world’s largest honky tonks in Pasadena, Texas and was credited with helping foster country music’s revival in the late ’70s as a key part of the Urban Cowboy film, has died. He was 86 and his death was announced by the Pasadena, Texas mayor, where the club was located.
Gilley died Saturday in Branson, Missouri. He had just ended a ten-show tour in April and died at home. No cause has been revealed.
Gilley’s was a football-field-sized dancehall, boasting a capacity of 6,000. It caught fire as the center of the John Travolta-Debra Winger film Urban Cowboy in 1978. It also introduced much of the world to mechanical bull riding.

When “Nanny” won the 2022 Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival this week, director Nikyatu Jusu became only the second woman in the history of the festival to take home the top prize. But “Nanny” was historic for another reason, too: It was the first outright horror movie to win the most coveted award in independent film, one that has anointed breakouts of the past decade ranging from Ryan Coogler to Damien Chazelle.
And it wasn’t alone. Horror and psychological thrillers made themselves known across the Sundance lineup this year, well beyond the insular Midnight section, and many of the filmmakers behind these highlights are available for hire. The industry — and all those soul-searching directors out there — should pay close attention, because this crop of newcomers points to an ideal happy medium between commercial opportunity and artistic growth.

John Laroquette, who lent his voice to the narration for the original “Texas Chain Saw Massacre”, is coming back for next month’s “Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” some 48 years after the first film was released, TheWrap has confirmed. But as they say: the saw is family.
When the original “Texas Chain Saw Massacre” opened, it had a written crawl (pre-dating “Star Wars” by several years) and narration that was recited by Laroquette in the kind of hushed, gravelly tone of a courtroom reporter. It was meant to sell the seriousness of the movie, and its claims that it was based on a real-life case (it wasn’t really). It was the perfect place setting for the movie that followed, as visceral and gripping as any horror movie from that period.
Laroquette returned to the franchise for 2003’s Michael Bay-produced “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” which looked to recreate the mood and...

The trailer for "The Matrix Resurrections" is here, and it looks great. It also looks weird, and that's what has me truly excited for this sequel. It would've been very easy for director and co-writer Lana Wachowski to play it safe and more or less recycle ideas from the original trilogy. Instead, "The Matrix Resurrections" is taking a much different approach -- the type of approach taken by weird, misunderstood sequels like "Gremlins 2: The New Batch" and "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2." Those were sequels that said: "Instead of giving you exactly what you saw in the first movie,...

The annual 50-state student government conference Boys State, sponsored by the American Legion, first came to filmmaker Jesse Moss’ attention after reading about the Texas edition in the Washington Post. At each summer’s conferences, boys gather to set up a mock-state legislature — they organize political campaigns, run for office, give speeches, write bills and debate it at all their respective state’s capital.
What made the Texas edition so special? In 2017, as covered by the Post, the young men at Boys State voted for Texas to secede from the United States.
Moss and his filmmaking partner Amanda McBaine believed that in a Donald Trump nation severely divided along blue and red state lines, Texas Boys State could provide answers into the origins of why we all can’t get along. So they opted to cover the 2018 summer edition of Texas Boys State with a 28-person crew — large by documentary standards — including six DPs.

Peacock has a revival of The Exorcist trilogy on the way, with the first film set for an October 2023 release. Fans have expressed mixed reviews over the classic being touched, and understandably so. William Friedkin created a lasting horror masterpiece with the 1973 film The Exorcist, which many still regard as the scariest film ever made.
On a positive note, Ellen Burstyn will return as Reagan's mother for the first revamp. On another arguably positive one, The Exorcist II: The Heretic, widely regarded as one of the worst sequels ever made, is probably due for a new and improved revision. No matter where you sit on the concept of the classic series being redone, discussions regarding The Exorcist urge audiences to revisit the legendary haunt and its sequels. The slasher genre has a long history. Many people credit movies like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Black Christmas with creating the genre, and Halloween certainly popularized it in 1978. By the time Scream came around in 1996 (over 20 years after Texas and Black Christmas), the genre had long established its tropes and clichés. Audiences knew exactly what to expect, and Scream intelligently relied on these expectations through its meta humor.

But Scream certainly isn't the only slasher to play with the genre's tropes. It's arguably the most popular, but far from the only self-aware horror-comedy-slasher.

“Top Chef” Season 18 has placed its chef’s hat on a winner: Congratulations to Gabe Erales!

"Calm down, bro." This is the kind of excellent short film that launches the career of a talented filmmaker. Bruiser is an award-winning short film made by filmmaker Miles Warren, and it premiered at both the SXSW + Sundance Festivals earlier this year. After his father gets into a fight at a bowling alley, Darious begins to investigate the limitations of his own manhood. The film is an exploration into toxic masculinity, violence, and bullying, and how this is passed from generation to generation. Starring Noble B. Whitted and J.D. Williams. This is not just another film about manhood, there's layers and depth to every single shot in this. Miles Warren "had a very clear vision... We referenced films like The Favourite, Dayveon, The Snowtown Murders, Chungking Express and Paris, Texas." A must watch short film - and it's only 10 mins. Thanks to Short of the Week for the tip on this one.

When Fede Álvarez’s 2016 horror movie “Don’t Breathe” first debuted, it was not designed to launch a new horror movie franchise. And yet, the film earned strong critical support (it boasts an 88 percent on Rotten Tomatoes) and was a summer sleeper hit at the box office with a worldwide gross just under $160 million. When an original idea makes that much of an impact, Hollywood comes calling for a sequel. And this is where Resident Evil 7 enters which was a most welcome return to form that is not only a great Resident Evil game but a brilliant survival horror game all on its own.

Miranda Lambert announced her unexpected latest project, The Marfa Tapes, on Thursday. The stripped-down album is a collection of raw country tunes written and performed alongside Texas singer-songwriters Jack Ingram and Jon Randall. On Friday, Lambert, Ingram, and Randall debuted a song off the record: The sparse ballad “In His Arms” offers a preview for the album’s sonic, thematic, and atmospheric direction.
“Is he playing in some house band in Dallas?” Lambert, who sings lead throughout the song, ponders. “Is he breaking horses in San Antone?” An accompanying video...

It's only been a few months since Supernatural went off of the air, but Jared Padalecki is back with another starring role on The CW.
This time, he's taking the lead as Cordell Walker, the Texas Ranger first embodied by Chuck Norris. He is best known for that portrayal, so any reboot has big shoes to fill.
Padalecki isn't a stranger to starring roles, but he's without his long-term scene partner, Jensen Ackles. Does he do justice on his own to the Walker, Texas Ranger legacy?
The short answer is yes. Padalecki is comfortable and charming as the embattled, legendary Texas Ranger and grieving husband, Cordell Walker. He's well suited to a more adult role than he's used to playing and as someone with a family that keeps him centered.
Casting Padalecki's wife, Genevieve, as Walker's late wife, Emily, adds gravitas to Walker's pain at losing his wife, making his raw emotions more believable.

The new go-around on The Texas Chainsaw Massacre has had a rough time of it this year, with Legendary Pictures’ production experiencing some abrupt behind-the-scenes changes. A few months ago, original directors Ryan and Andy Tohill were replaced by David Blue Garcia, with shooting having to be restarted. However, things do now appear to be moving forward, and today we received an official website for the movie, as well as some poster art.

Another scripted series based on Joe Exotic is becoming a reality.
NBCUniversal has placed a series order for a limited series starring and executive produced by Kate McKinnon.
The series is set to air on not one, not two, but three destinations.
They are NBC, USA Network, and NBC Universal's streaming service, Peacock.
It's certainly a different way of rolling the series out, but it could be the shape of things to come for different outlets that fall under one media conglomerate.
The series will center around Carole Baskin, Exotic, and the tigers they famously tussled over.
The insanity begins when Baskin learns that her sworn nemesis is breeding and using his menagerie for profit.
“She sets out to shut down his venture, inciting a quickly escalating rivalry,” per the official logline.
“But Carole has a checkered past of her own and when the claws come out, Joe will stop...

After months and months of waiting and wondering, we now have some solid details regarding the direction and themes of director Matt Reeves' upcoming comic book movie, after The Batman trailer arrived over the weekend. We have now had several different iterations of the famous DC superhero over the last few years, but Reeves is hoping to bring something different to the table by making this version of Batman more flawed than he has ever been.
"For me, what's really important about this iteration is that a lot of the other stories are very much about how he had to master his fear and master himself in order to become Batman and that in that Batman state, he's sort of in his best self," Reeves said about Bruce Wayne in The Batman.
"For me, what was exciting was not doing that, not doing the origin, not doing what we'd seen...

Phyllis George, one of the first leading female sports broadcasters, died on Friday due to complications from a blood disorder. She was 70.
George’s career in front of the camera began in 1974 as the co-host of “Candid Camera” on CBS. That same year, she then joined the “NFL Today” team alongside veteran sports braodcasters Brent Musburger, Irv Cross and Jimmy the Greek. With the team, she hosted pre-game discussions and analysis before National Football League games.
She was one of the first women to be a major player in the sports TV world. She also helped cover horse races, like the Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes.
In 1978, George became the host of People magazine’s self-titled entertainment show. She then went on to co-anchor the CBS Morning news and interviewed many noteworthy guests, including former First Lady Nancy Reagan.
George won the Miss America beauty pageant in 1971, and before that she was crowned Miss Texas.

Fox has set Cheers alum Rob Long to write and the Gail Berman-run SideCar Content Accelerator to produce The Texanist, a multi-camera comedy inspired by David Courtney’s Texas Monthly column. The project had been on fast-track off-cycle development since the broadcast network in January acquired the IP and launched a search for a writer to adapt it.
Penned by Long, The Texanist tells the story of Dave, host of a popular Austin-area radio show that dispenses advice to Texas natives and newcomers alike on what, exactly, is the true Texas way. But the “Texas way” is changing — in good ways and not-so-good ways — and it’s Dave’s job, with the help of his wife and family and co-workers, to figure out which changes to embrace and which to reject.
