One of the better Yugoslav/Croatian movies of all time

Wow very artistic and stylish move in black and white. There are only 3 actors in the movie and its all indoors in an apartment.

Acting and photography make this move. There is a lot of subtle things in this move. I don't want to spoil anything in this review, but the plot tickens slowly and a bit unexpectedly. There is a certain point when the repetitiveness of the movie and rondo (a tune that is the same but interesting) is broken and it gets more interesting.

The main theme is that 2 strangers become friends by playing chess every sunday. The chess game at a point gets more interesting because the characters have more motivation to beat one another. That motivation comes from those certain events between them that happen.

Its a smart, very likeable movie. Kudos to the director and Milivoj Vizintin for photography, one of my favorite scenes is the few seconds close up on one of the chess players who is usually very stoic, but now can see his ambition in a few seconds shot of his look behind thick glasses.

    Must see movie.

    Fantastic movie

This is one of the best movie I've ever seen in my life. Dramatic, exciting, romantic and intelligent. Great presentation by tree best Yugoslav actors.

The sculptor, his wife, & her lover. Interesting game of Chess!

The concept of "Rondo (1966)" depended almost entirely on the quality of its actors. The movie is intellectually and aesthetically above almost everything else, ahead of it time and was unlike any other Yugoslavian films. It's tighter, absorbing, better constructed drama focussing on the emotional development of three characters. Every Sunday, a solitary bachelor who is a judge Mladen (Stevo Zigon) comes to play chess with his friend Fedja (Relja Basic), a sculptor and gradually begins a love affair with the sculptor's wife, Neda (Milena Dravic). The chessboard becomes a key focus, the gestures, symbolisms, and the movements during the game will resonate with the characters and the love triangle. The director also uses Mozart's Rondo which is played throughout the chess game sounding like a loop, with little variations. Nothing could be more appropriate, after all, this score by Mozart shows in full seriousness the love affair leading to dramatic crescendo as the sequence ends/repeats. The sequences reminded me of the cricket commentary, which is played in the background in P'tang, Yang, Kipperbang (1982), a British tv movie directed by Michael Apted. I even recollected films of Otakar Vávra, Ladislav Smoljak.

Coming back, enclosed around the wife and the chess game, the film is structured as a series of two-man matches with abundant dialogues on various topics of life and love. The minimalism in the décor is a conscious decision by the director and it has been made to juxtapose colourisation with a cold, defensive acting style from all the 3 characters. And in my eyes, this also works perfectly. The character moves mainly in stage-like spaces, the performances are first rate, and the plot of the film is mostly created through dialogues. Therefore, the inclined viewer should not expect the usual cinema, but rather be prepared to get involved in a minimalist, but emotionally demanding film.

    Vintage Ex-Yugoslav Masterpiece

I have seen this movie fifteen years ago, and it is still vividly imprinted in my memory. If you have not yet seen this movie, but you are familiar with Mozart's Rondo KV 511 (movie's "background music"), then you can already feel movie's exquisite atmosphere: intimate, chamber and with a touch of sadness. It is impossible to decide what to praise most, but I can just mention direction, photography and cast.

    Excellent Romance movie

One of the best ex.Yugoslavian movies I have ever seen. The usage of musical form as a narrative structure of a film is combination rarely used by directors. It has resulted a fluent and enjoyable to watch, what usually may be very boring drama for an average film viewer. Simply, EXCELLENT!!!
