The third edition of the Red Sea Souk, the market arm of the Red Sea Film Festival, awarded its top prize of $100,000 to “The Return of the Prodigal Son” by Rani Massalha. Another eight feature projects and two TV series were awarded cash and in-kind prizes as part of the Red Souk Awards.
Massalha’s film, a co-production between Egypt, Tunisia and France, tells the story of Salem, a pig farmer in Egypt who is a Copt — a native Christian community in the country, often persecuted — amidst a breakout of the swine flu in 2009 that sends Egypt into a spiral of psychosis, leading the Mubarak government to pass a law to slaughter all the pigs.
In a statement, the writer-director said: “The pigs of Egypt were ‘sacrificed’ under political pressure and hysterical media coverage organized by the Muslim Brotherhood, crystalizing the structural violence of Egyptian social relations between communities.”

In the 1960 historical epic Mughal-e-Azam, there comes a radical break in its rolling presentation of power. To woo and celebrate the Mughal Prince Salim, a sculptor is commissioned by one of his suitors to carve a marble statue personifying eros. However, the sculptor, a proud dissident, conjures no simple work of veneration, or even, of marble, but a marvelous trick, like Michelangelo’s Slaves played as a comic gesture. This stone summation of desire turns out to be a flesh-and-blood slave girl, Anarkali, disguised as a statue. This act of artistic subversiveness, of elevating a commoner to a symbolic zenith reserved for royals, gods, and virtues personified, is an omen, foretelling not only the love between the Prince and Anarkali, but how the love between this Muslim royal and a Hindu slave will crack a hierarchy previously thought resolute. To a degree, S.S. Rajamouli is also an iconoclast. Rajamouli is a regionalist director,...

It’s “lights out” for Detective Harry Bosch, quite literally, at the close of a teaser trailer for the seventh and final season of the Amazon Prime drama, which will release all eight episodes on Friday, June 25.
Based on Michael Connelly’s best-selling 2014 novel The Burning Room and the real-life arson case that inspired it, the TV series’ farewell run puts Detective Harry Bosch’s famous motto — “Everybody counts, or nobody counts” — center stage, when a 10-year-old girl dies in an arson fire and Bosch (played by Titus Welliver) risks everything to bring her killer to justice despite opposition from powerful forces.

Joko Anwar scored Indonesia’s highest-grossing horror hit ever with “Satan’s Slaves,” a remake-slash-prequel to Sisworo Gautama Putra’s beloved if campy 1980 original. Already another big success at home, his followup “Impetigore” is likewise a rebooting tribute to past celluloid horrors, given the familiar feel to its tale of a prodigal-daughter heroine returning to a native village that’s cursed by black magic.
Less dependent on jump scares than “Slaves” (though there are still a few), this handsome and atmospheric production is good, sometimes grisly fun that’s not terribly scary, particularly once hectic climactic events prove less suspenseful than the slow-burn buildup. Despite doing huge box office in Asia (where it opened after its premiere in Sundance’s midnight section), “Impetigore” probably won’t be Anwar’s breakout moment among Western genre fans, though he’ll surely have one sooner or later.

Russell Albion “Russ” Meyer was born in California in 1922 and spent WWII as a combat photographer. In 1953 Playboy magazine debuted and Meyer was one of its first centerfold photographers. Meyer had a knack, and a passion, for photographing gorgeous, busty women and felt that the gals in the nudist camp movies that were popular in the ’50s were far too plain-looking for his tastes. In 1959, Meyer scraped together $24,000 and made The Immoral Mr. Teas, a quaint, colorful, and cartoonish movie about a nerdy fellow whose life is constantly interrupted by beautiful large-breasted women in various stages of undress. There was no sex in Meyer’s film and he made no pretense of presenting nudity as a lifestyle choice, as did the nudist camp movies. It was a simple and honest film about...

Ah, to be a horny moviegoer in the 1970s. It was the era of high-end, widely watched pornographic features like Deep Throat, The Opening of Misty Beethoven, and Behind the Green Door. Sure, the flicks were obscene, but there was something so damn charming about them. Sadly, today's pornography is all gonzo nonsense, but the tradition of carefully crafted sex appeal lives on in the Magic Mike series, whose latest installment, Magic Mike Xxl, grinds into theaters this week. For the inaugural episode of our new "Vulture Remix" series (tune in every Monday!), video artist Louis Plamondon, a.k.a. Sleepy Skunk, has put together this loving reimagining of the Magic Mike Xxl trailer as though it were being released to a seedy theater near you in 1976 or so. It's technically Sfw, but be careful — you might blush.Footage sources: Russ Meyer's Fanny Hill; Vixen!; Eruption; Black Snake; La...

Chicago – There’s a large part of me that wants to wholeheartedly recommend and embrace “Cloud Atlas” for two reasons. One, it’s based on arguably the best book of the millennium so far, David Mitchell’s stunning masterpiece. And if more people see the movie, more are likely to read a book that everyone should experience. Two, I do agree with those who love the film that Hollywood doesn’t take risks like this often enough, and if we don’t encourage risks, we won’t get rewards. However, “Cloud Atlas” still frustrates me more than it thrills me. Maybe the book was simply un-adaptable as so many have theorized. But I think mistakes were made on top of the inherent difficulty in Mitchell’s novel.

Spanish director dies following a stroke: Best known for his nearly two hundred underground, "exploitation" films "I think I was born because my father and my mother had sex ... ." Nope, that has nothing to do with the anti-censorship lectured delivered by Oz the Great and Powerful and Interior. Leather Bar's James Franco online. The words above were uttered by another Franco, a Spaniard. No, not the foaming-at-the-mouth right-wing military ruler Francisco Franco, but multitasking filmmaker Jesús Franco, aka Jess Franco aka dozens of other aliases, including those in honor of jazz performers Clifford Brown and James P. Johnson. His oeuvre included about 200 films, among them The White Slave, The Sexual History of O, Macumba Sexual, , Emmanuelle Exposed, Vampyros Lesbos, The Mistresses of Dr. Jekyll, and White Cannibal Queen. The director died today in Malaga, a city in southern Spain, after suffering a stroke. According to reports, he had never truly...

Craig Brewer is following his Footloose remake with The Gangster Princess of Beverly Hills, an adaptation of a Rolling Stones article that was published last summer.
The article in question is about Lisette Lee, who pretended to be a heiress to the Samsung fortune, as well as an actress, singer and model. It was later revealed that she faked all of that and in reality was a drug mule. She was caught trafficking 500 pounds of weed into Ohio and was given a six-year sentence. The article was written by Sabrina Rubin Erdely.
Brewer’s Sundance hit Hustle & Flow, led him to direct Black Snake and Footloose. He was one of the writers on the upcoming Tarzan, which is being directed by David Yates. And he’s also directing a pilot episode titled Boomerang for Fox. The pilot stars Felicity Huffman and Anthony Lapaglia.

Warner Bros has just dropped the details regarding the blu-ray release of the Wachowskis' latest movie, Cloud Atlas; including all the bonuses coming with it and when you'll be able to get your hands on it and bring it home.
Cloud Atlas was one of my favorite films of 2012. I thought it was an amazingly well done adaptation of the book it's based on, as well as a powerful and visually impressive story in its own right. Sadly, it didn't do as well in the box office and many people missed out on the film. I think that's a shame, but I can understand it. Marketing such a film was difficult and it's hard to show off why people should have gone to see it.
Fortunately, films that didn't get the attention they deserved in the theaters, can thrive on home releases, which is why I was so excited WB...

A film that general audiences were either just too confused about or too timid too confront was Cloud Atlas. David Mitchell’s 2004 highly acclaimed novel was a hit with literary critics and book clubs when it was initially released but the ambitious film adaptation brought to the big-screen through the combined talents of the Wachowski’s and Tom Tykwer didn’t even break $30 million in the Us – something sadly that Identity Thief did in one weekend – and was met with some mixed reviews. Thankfully the film fared much better abroad (bringing in $80 million) and the critics that did appreciate the film’s multi-dimensional structure and inspired casting were loud and proud with their praise of the film. Cloud Atlas may have appeared on several “Worst of 2012″ lists but it broke into just as many “Best of 2012″ lists as well. There’s no doubt that it’s an experimental project that...

Quentin Tarantino's new movie is a reminder of Hollywood's failure to properly grapple with slavery. In fact, all the intelligent movies come from the exploitation sector, says John Patterson
Can you name a single great mainstream American movie about slavery? I don't mean Birth Of A Nation or Gone With The Wind, both of which more or less endorse the Peculiar Institution; or Amistad or Beloved, which are adequate on the facts but no one's idea of great movies. I mean a great American movie possessed of an understanding of the full extent of slavery, its bottomless obscenity and violence.
No, I didn't think so. I'm not yet sure if Django Unchained, with Jamie Foxx as Nat Turner by way of Black Zorro, is actually a great American movie (though I haven't enjoyed a Tarantino movie this much since Jackie Brown), but it does not stint in its determination...

Chances are good that if you a horror fan and it’s new year’s eve, you’re searching for something to watch. Most of us hope to find the Twilight Zone marathon running strong late into the evening if we’re lucky, but it’s fickle. Hit or miss. Sometimes SyFy graces us with its presence… sometimes… they put on absolutely garbage and we take it. There are, of course, a few movies that have New Year’s Eve as the focus. Bloody New Year, Terror Train and New Year’s Evil which I can consider to be the pinnacle of New Year’s horror even if Terror Train is far superior movie. Is it any wonder that all three of these features of seen distinct DVD of Blu-ray releases? Fan/cult favorites with varying degree of quality and merit. Aren’t there just a pile of other movies...

The Russ Meyer Show Featuring Kitten Natividad takes place in St. Louis this Friday, June 15th at The Way Out Club. Details at the end of this article.
Article by Jim Batts, Dana Jung, and Tom Stockman
There was no sex in Meyer’s film and he made no pretense of presenting nudity as a lifestyle choice,...

Mondo Topless (1966) is Russ Meyer’s send up of the swingin’ 60′s, a pseudo-documentary portrait of San Francisco, and most of all, a tribute to Meyer’s favorite subject; naked women! The 61-minute sort-of-documentary is sparse, even by Russ Meyer standards – just a rock soundtrack by The Aladdins accompanied by an overexuberant announcer who provides double entendre narration as stacked women dance about displaying their figures. Mondo Topless, which seems relatively wholesome now, was definitely a product of its time and requires historical perspective (and, despite the name of this column, it Is available on DVD).

There are people who believe zombies should only walk. And there are people who believe they can run around like steroid-injecting track stars. Then, there’s Frank Darabont, executive producer of the new AMC zombie show The Walking Dead, who believes both aforementioned groups are full of hooey. “Well, it depends on the zombie’s mood,” says the Shawshank Redemption director. “If they’ve recently fed, they’re a little less interested, a little more shutdown. Other times, they’re riled to a predatory state and can get a little faster.” So, they’re mostly walking — but sometimes they jog...
