Baba Yaga (1973)
Ballerina early Thursday previews dance around $3.5 million at the box office
Baba Yaga (1973)
The Baba Yaga’s legacy continues as a new Continental resident hits the screens with Ballerina. Ana De Armas follows up her impressive action scene in No Time to Die with a full-blown action vehicle that’s set in the John Wick universe. Our Eic Chris Bumbray had a blast with the movie, saying in his review, “Ballerina is one of the more satisfying franchise spin-offs in recent memory. In this era of IP, every studio is desperate to max out the potential sequels and spinoffs their key franchises can handle, and Lionsgate has a whole slew planned around the John Wick franchise. Yet, what makes Ballerina different is that this doesn’t feel like much of a derivative of the franchise.”

While this isn’t a true Keanu Reeves film, he’s been a big part of the marketing in order to entice audiences who yearn for more Wick...

‘Ballerina’ Review: A ‘John Wick’ Spinoff with Thrills but No Mythology of Its Own
Image
One of the things that lifts a John Wick movie above a mere revenge flick is the way it drops you into a well-established world full of rules and consequences. So it’s only natural that spinoffs expounding upon things happening at the margins of John Wick’s smackdowns—like the machinations of the Continental Hotel—were greenlit to capitalize on the success of the series.

Of all the fertile ideas turned out by the John Wick movies, on the top of the list of those worthy of expansion is surely Halle Berry’s Sofia Al-Azwar and her testicle-ripping pair of Belgian Malinois. As for Anjelica Huston’s terse underworld queen the Director and the ballerinas, among others, that she trains in the assassin traditions of the Ruska Roma, well, given how Len Wiseman’s Ballerina is anything but a deep dive into that corner of the John Wick universe,...

Amazon Wanted Henry Cavill's 'Highlander' Reboot as Part of Their Heavily Nostalgic Plans
Image
Audiences have been waiting for John Wick director Chad Stahelski’s Highlander reboot for years now (no doubt many have wondered if they would be required to live forever to actually see it), with the Henry Cavill-led project having now shifted from the studio behind Keanu Reeves’ Baba Yaga, Lionsgate, to Amazon MGM Studios. While it wasn’t revealed at the time why such a move was made, it’s possible we now have our reason...and it’s either good news or bad news, depending on how nostalgic you’re feeling.

According to a new report (via JoBlo), Amazon chose to step in and pick up the reboot of the beloved franchise as they are now determined to put a lot of stock into well-known 80s IP. Leaning further into nostalgia, the studio is reportedly doing everything they can to “attract a Gen-x-focused audience,” which also includes their...

One Character Could Ruin Just How Cool ‘Sakamoto Days’ Cour 2 Looks
Image
Sakamoto Days is an incredible manga series, but the anime seems to have fallen a bit short, be it with the animation or some of the creative changes that have been introduced. But there is a chance for the series to fix that once and for all.

The trailer for the Cour 2 (Part 2) of the first season has dropped, and it actually looks really good. There is a high chance that many of the past flaws will be fixed, and the second part will be the redemption arc of the series. But there is one thing that could jeopardize Cour 2 of Sakamoto Days.

Animating the intense moments from a superhuman action series like Sakamoto Days is difficult, especially when you introduce a mythical assassin like Takamura. His presence and power, if depicted incorrectly, could ruin the entirety of Cour 2.

Sakamoto Days has shown its weakness in animating moments of intense...

John Wick 5 Trailer Will Force You to Watch Keanu Reeves in Action, Says Director Chad Stahelski
Image
“Ain’t no rest for the wicked, money don’t grow on trees…” That old Cage the Elephant lyric hit different when we read Chad Stahelski’s newest bombshell about John Wick 5. Just when we thought Keanu Reeves’ Baba Yaga had finally hung up his guns, Stahelski drops a line that stops time. And we believe him. The director is not just dealing in sequels but in shock therapy for the soul.

Despite Chapter 4 seemingly burying Wick (literally), Stahelski’s cooking up a new tale, a pivot from grief and the High Table saga, with one confirmed face: Reeves himself. And while some may cry foul on continuity, Stahelski isn’t selling a sequel; he’s staging a resurrection. With Ballerina, a Donnie Yen-led spin-off, and the Under The High Table series all in the pipeline, this universe isn’t slowing; it’s recalibrating. And frankly, we’re strapped in.

Chad Stahelski’s Update Means John Wick 5 Can Do What the Rest 4 Movies Couldn’t
Image
Chad Stahelski has suggested that the upcoming John Wick 5 will be very different from the rest of the movies in the franchise. The Keanu Reeves franchise will seemingly take a break from its High Table storyline and start afresh.

John Wick has been a notable franchise when it comes to action movies. With a glamorous tuxedo-clad Keanu Reeves, eye-soothing neon backdrops, and stylized Gun-Fu action scenes, it has revolutionized the genre. According to Stahelski, John Wick 5 will take the series to the next level.

Since its inception, the John Wick movies have seen both critical and commercial growth with every installment. However, barring the increasing scale and grander action set pieces, the storyline has never been a very strong point of the franchise. But director Chad Stahelski has hinted that...

Keanu Reeves Confirmed To Star In John Wick 5 — Chad Stahelski Will Direct
Image
You just can't keep a good Baba Yaga down! Yes, despite Keanu Reeves' mythic hitman John Wick having seemingly met his maker on the steps of the Sacré-Cœur in John Wick: Chapter 4, it would appear that rumours of Wick's death have been greatly exaggerated after all. Taking to the stage at CinemaCon earlier today ahead of the release of hotly anticipated Ana de Armas Wickiverse spin-off Ballerina, Lionsgate chair Adam Fogelson announced that John Wick 5 is indeed in the works, with Reeves attached to once again star and franchise helmsman Chad Stahelski set to call the shots as director.

Per THR's reporting from CinemaCon, no details have been revealed as of yet regarding the plot of John Wick 5, who else will star alongside Reeves, or indeed when we can expect to see the bearded Bogeyman's return hit cinemas. But, talking to convention goers, Fogelson did say the following: "Keanu,...

In a recent interview with Collider, McShane shed light on the dynamic between Winston and Eve, hinting at a past filled with secrets and untold stories. “I know secrets about her that she will try to find out later on. Obviously, I kept tabs on her over the years since she’s been under the ballet tutelage of the character of Anjelica Huston,” McShane revealed. This connection ties Eve’s journey to the larger John Wick universe, adding depth to her character’s backstory while maintaining Winston’s signature air of mystery. “But Winston, you still don’t know who he is, which is kind of nice. Ana De Armas Kicks Ass In New Behind The Scenes Look At John Wick Spin-Off Ballerina
Image
"This is not a female John Wick." So says director Len Wiseman at the start of the freshly dropped Ccxp behind the scenes look at his upcoming actioner Ballerina, the latest off-shoot from the John Wick universe. But while that's certainly true — this movie is set to represent the introduction point for Ana De Armas' Eve Macarro, the Ruska Roma trained dancing assassin who'll be bringing a whole new meaning to the expression 'bullet ballet' in Lionsgate's hotly anticipated John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum and Chapter 4 midquel — it doesn't mean the ever-expanding Jwu's latest lead is any less formidable than Keanu Reeves' Baba Yaga. Quite the opposite in fact. Just check out the featurette below to see what we mean:

Much of the emphasis here is on how Ballerina is set to expand the Wickiverse, with the likes of franchise godhead Chad Stahelski, director Wiseman, and the late, great...

Every John Wick Movie, Ranked by Kill Count
Image
The John Wick film series is known for being brutal, gritty and bloody. The first film has more than 70 on-screen kills during Keanu Reeves' mission of revenge, setting the bar very high for later sequels. John Wick, the notorious assassin nicknamed Baba Yaga, is one of the most dangerous in the crime underworld. The series follows his journey as a rogue agent when the mob world calls him back again. While the world doesn't change much, there's nothing about Wick that stays the same.

Wick is going through the cycle of grieving in the first three movies which span only a few weeks. He makes many decisions, though not all wise. Some of them have serious consequences that lead to him running around with a bounty on his head. Wick also has to go the extra mile just to undo his own mistake; but it turns out he's just going...

“We were told, ‘It’s bad luck'”: Keanu Reeves Made John Wick 1 Kill the Puppy, Og Script Had an Alternate Story
Image
Keanu Reeves’ John Wick saga is as perfect as could be, turning out to be a tremendously successful hit as opposed to the then-first-time directors Chad Stahelski and David Leitch’s initial dreading expectations. It all started with former hitman Wick’s wife’s death turning all the more grievous for him as her final gift to him, a puppy, gets killed by the son of a Russian mob kingpin.

Surprisingly enough, as much as the audiences ended up loving the movie, the same could not be said about the people behind the screens during the making of the film. In fact, Stahelski and Leitch were even pitched an alternate story where the puppy is later shown to be alive. But Reeves stood up for them and the first film killed the puppy to earn the ravaging scores it so deserved.

“Everybody on the creative side hated the idea”: Everyone Hated the Martial Arts Technique Keanu Reeves Was Using in John Wick
Image
It’s hard to overstate the impact of the first John Wick, which not only rekindled Keanu Reeves’ career at the time, and cemented him as one of the most prolific action stars of our time, it also revitalized the action landscape. Considering how influential the Bourne flicks were, many action films post its release, tried to incorporate its shaky cam formula.

While some worked better than others, the trope was done to death by the late 2000s, with Taken 3 serving as its worst offender. But John Wick served as the outlier, which popularized two new components in the genre, usage of long steady takes and gun-fu. But interestingly, not many were in favor of the latter during the film’s production.

Chad Stahelski on John Wick 5: “It’d have to be a completely different storyline”
Image
John Wick: Chapter 4 may have felt like a natural endpoint for the franchise (at least when it came to its title character), but Lionsgate has already confirmed plans for John Wick: Chapter 5. However, the big question is, will it actually happen? Director Chad Stahelski isn’t ruling anything out, but if John Wick: Chapter 5 does happen, he knows he won’t be able to top the fourth movie.

“The honest truth is you don’t. You simply don’t. There’s no topping what we did. That’s the end. That’s the deal. That’s what we found closure for. Look, sometimes, we’ll keep things in development. My creative team and I can’t stop thinking about Wick,” Stahelski told THR. “Sometimes, we’ll use development as an exercise, but is there an opportunity to do [John Wick 5]? Of course, there is, whether it’s for money or for creativity.

Jennifer Hudson Talks Dream Interviews, New Christmas Album and What to Expect From Her Talk Show’s Season 3

Jennifer Hudson exploded into the pop culture zeitgeist two decades ago as a contestant on the singing competition series “American Idol.” And although she was eliminated early from the third season’s top 7, she would rapidly outgrow her reality show roots and become one of Hollywood’s most prolific multi-hyphenates.

Along the way, Hudson lent her voice to some of the most significant events in American culture, notching performances at the Academy Awards, the Emmys, two Super Bowls, Michael Jackson’s memorial service and Pope Francis’ first visit to America.

‘I Am Your Beast’ Review: You Are What You Play
Image
A momentary dissonance is created at the start of the fast-paced Fps I Am Your Beast, as the player by no means has the same level of murderous skill as Alphonse Harding. As you’ll soon learn from the Metal Gear-like radio transmissions between levels, Harding spent an untold number of years with the Covert Operations Initiative, being whittled into a killer by his former handler, Burkin. It’s a stroke of genius on the game’s part that Burkin’s efforts to force Harding into one more “one last mission” gives players a compressed version of Harding’s training, in which they must quickly learn to act like a beast to survive.

Even as players pick up the necessary rules of engagement in I Am Your Beast, they’re constantly reminded of how reluctant Harding is to return to violence. Most levels begin with a shot of your empty fists clenching and releasing.

Preston Sturges gets five movies, with Sullivan’s Travels arriving in October.

Theme-wise, a photographer series includes Rear Window, Peeping Tom, Blow-up, Close-Up, and Clouzot’s La prisonnière; “Vacation Noir” features The Lady from Shanghai, Brighton Rock, Kansas City Confidential, Purple Noon, and La piscine. Alongside the aforementioned PTA and Antonioni pictures,...

Keanu Reeves John Wick 5 Return Would Be The Perfect Callback To One Of His Most Iconic Lines
Image
John Wick 5 could involve Keanu Reeves in a meaningful way, bringing back an iconic line from the first film. Reeves' return would add depth to the story, potentially revealing that his character's death was faked. While the franchise could move on without Reeves, his presence is crucial to maintaining the series' integrity.

Keanu Reeves's return in John Wick 5 would act as a fitting callback to one of the action icon's most memorable lines. Despite his apparent death in John Wick: Chapter 4, the story is confirmed to continue, as a fifth installment in the main series is known to be in development. However, there's no official word on Reeves' involvement with the film or how it will deal with John Wick 4's ending.

Theoretically, the franchise could move on without him, but given the title and focus of the series, it's still hard to imagine John Wick 5 happening without...

Keanu Reeves' Return In New John Wick Movie Erases A Huge Worry About The Baba Yaga's Replacement
Image
John Wick's death won't stop his influence as he looks set to train the next generation of assassins, ensuring a smooth franchise transition. Ana de Armas' role in Ballerina hints at John Wick mentoring her, setting her up as a worthy successor in the action series. Meeting Rooney in Ballerina adds a tragic layer to John Wick's death, showcasing the emotional impact of his demise on other characters.

John Wick's death raised concerns about the Baba Yaga's replacement, but Keanu Reeves' role in the next John Wick movie removes these worries. Despite John Wick's death in the action saga's fourth installment, Keanu Reeves will reprise his role as the franchise's central character in the upcoming spinoff, Ballerina. Given how vital Reeves is to the franchise, there was naturally apprehension about how John Wick could continue without its protagonist. John Wick 4 did give him the perfect sendoff, which offered...

John Wick: What's The Actual Value Of A Gold Coin?
Image
The John Wick coins have no fixed dollar value, but their true worth lies in the trust and honor they represent within the mercenary world. The coins are made with real gold and would be worth around $2,000 each based on their gold content, but their value goes beyond monetary exchange. The exchange rate for the coins makes no sense on purpose, as they are meant to represent a promise or favor rather than a traditional currency.

The John Wick coins are the most intriguing and mysterious aspects of the world of these movies, but what is one of the John Wick coins worth? For an action franchise, the mythology of the John Wick universe is surprisingly intricate, with Keanu Reeves' character existing inside a vast fictional world of secretive mercenaries, shadowy syndicates, and violent traditions. John Wick's seedy underworld trades in gold coins instead of leaving a digital footprint. The...

John Wick's Next Spinoff Won't Make The Same Mistake With Keanu Reeves
Image
The upcoming spin-off film Ballerina confirms that John Wick is not dead, as he is set to make an appearance, indicating he has at least one more big-screen appearance ahead of him. Ballerina takes place before John's apparent death, serving as a bridge between John Wick: Chapter 3 and Chapter 4, highlighting John Wick's importance to the franchise. Despite Ballerina introducing new protagonists, the expectation is set that John Wick can jump back into action at any time, emphasizing his centrality to the John Wick franchise.

The John Wick franchise's upcoming spin-off Ballerina is a strong indicator that John Wick himself is not dead. After four movies of battling endless waves of assassins and High Table enforcers, John seemingly met his end in John Wick: Chapter 4 after his High Table duel with his old friend Caine (Donnie Yen). However, with John already confirmed to appear in Ballerina, he still has at...

The Continental is a prequel show to the John Wick franchise, set in the 1970s, and follows the origin story of Winston and Charon. Swinging back into the world of John Wick, the prequel show The Continental still has more action to come after its first two episodes. John Wick Tease Explains Why Keanu Reeves' Assassin Is The Most Feared
Image
Warning! This article contains Spoilers for The Continental episode 2!

The Continental episode 2 includes a foreshadowing reference to John Wick, establishing how formidable his "Boogeyman" nickname is. The use of chicken feet to scare away the Boogeyman in The Continental demonstrates the level of fear and reputation that John Wick eventually achieves. The episode also hints at the origin of the Bowery King's title, introducing a character named Mazie who is known as the "Queenpin of the criminals."

The Continental episode 2 includes a reference to Keanu Reeves’ John Wick that helps underscore why he becomes the world’s most feared assassin. While the original John Wick movie picks up as the titular hitman returns to the criminal underworld after his retirement, the franchise emphasizes that the legendary “Baba Yaga,” aka The Boogeyman, is unmatched against other assassins. A John Wick 2 Stunt Gone Wrong Cut An Entire Car In Half
Image
The "John Wick" franchise isn't just a montage of John Woo-inspired gun-fu combat sequences. The series has used just about everything imaginable to craft intense action scenes, from dogs to, as was the case with "John Wick: Chapter 4," fast-moving vehicles. In fact, cars and other forms of transport have been utilized by franchise director Chad Stahelski throughout the four "John Wick" films, and not just to choreograph fight-scene style "car-fu" sequences.

All the way back in 2014's "John Wick," the titular hitman reluctantly returns to his former illicit lifestyle after his puppy is killed and his Ford Mustang Boss 429 stolen. That first entry in the saga of Baba Yaga saw Wick get revenge for the aforementioned pup killing, but his Mustang remained unaccounted for. Which is why, when "John Wick: Chapter 2" arrived, there was some unfinished business to take care of.

"Chapter 2" starts with John Wick breaking...

Keanu Reeves Went Full Method For John Wick's Sledgehammer Scene
Image
The "John Wick" series is known for subverting action movie tropes. It's part of what has made the Keanu Reeves-led films such a success, with the latest entry, "John Wick: Chapter 4," headshoting a new franchise box office record on its opening weekend. The saga of Baba Yaga has now officially passed the $1 billion mark at the box office, proving that "John Wick" is a bonafide blockbuster franchise.

But while a huge part of the films' success has been upending genre clichés and basically inventing a whole new action subgenre — think "Nobody," "Atomic Blonde," and "Sisu" — sometimes the films just lean into the standard tricks of action movie-making. Case in point: the famous "Baba Yaga" sequence in 2014's "John Wick." The inaugural entry in the franchise features so many classic John Wick moments, but the scene where Michael Nyqvist's Russian crime lord Viggo Tarasov brings his son, Losef...

John Wick vs Tyler Rake: Who Is the Better Action Hero?
Image
The following contains spoilers for Extraction 2, now streaming on Netflix.

There's no denying the John Wick franchise reinvigorated that epic style of action from the 1990s. With Keanu Reeves as the titular assassin, Lionsgate has created a series fans love, and not just for the wild antics. There's also heart and soul behind John trying to find peace after losing his wife. The film franchise also appears to have inspired other projects like Gunpowder Milkshake, Atomic Blonde and Mr. Nobody. With such a smash hit on their hands, it's no surprise the studio is eager for John Wick 5.

Another film franchise similar to John Wick is Netflix's explosive Extraction. Here, Chris Hemsworth plays a covert-ops agent, Tyler Rake, who takes contracts, but ends up on a personal mission in Extraction 2 to rescue family. This sequel is just as bombastic as the first movie, and with John Wick 4...

John Wick Will Never Die Because John Wick 5 Is In Development
Image
This post contains spoilers for "John Wick: Chapter 4"

"John Wick: Chapter 4" exploded into theaters back in March and almost immediately headshot a new franchise record with a $73.5 million debut. And Keanu Reeves' deadly hitman continued his assault on the box office over the next couple of months, eventually pushing the "John Wick" series into $1 billion territory and cementing its status as a blockbuster franchise to be reckoned with. So it shouldn't be all that surprising that Lionsgate is developing a fifth "John Wick" movie.

"What's that?" I hear you ask. "Didn't our beloved assassin perish at the end of 'Chapter 4'?" Well, technically, yes. But this is Hollywood, where no one is ever truly dead — especially if they make you a hell of a lot of money. Which is why it's no shock that during a Q4 2023 earnings call, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chairman Joseph Drake confirmed that...

Kill Boksoon Is A Little Like John Wick, But With A Very Korean Twist
Image
Kill Boksoon may appear to be the female version of John Wick, except with a daughter instead of a dog, but director Byun Sung-hyun has a unique inspiration for his world-building. Netflix's new action film, arriving on March 31, is set in a version of South Korea that's home to countless "killing agencies" that raise assassins from youth to be the number one hitman in the industry. Protagonist Gil Boksoon (played by acclaimed actress Jeon Do-yeon) currently holds that title, but when she breaks the sacred rules on an assignment, she suddenly falls from her pedestal and becomes a target herself.

During a roundtable interview about Kill Boksoon, the filmmaker spoke to Screen Rant about his inspiration for creating an alternate universe in which assassins are a large-scale business in South Korea with strict rules to follow and alliances made between companies. Here's what he had to say:
