Cartoons have been a fun addition to the world of film and media since its creation in 1908. Initially, comic strips were the closest thing to cartoons, but animation quickly took off. Franchises like Looney Tunes quickly took the world by storm with their short films which were usually played before a movie. Once television took off, animation soon found a new home.

Some cartoons seem like they just aired not too long ago but can be considered old-school for being around for almost thirty years. Many great old-school cartoons depended on physical comedy, distinct animation styles, memorable catchphrases, and creative storytelling supported by high-quality voice acting. This week, Apple TV+ released the trailer for the highly-anticipated, star-studded series “The Crowded Room.” The 10-episode drama stars Tom Holland and Amanda Seyfried and debuts on June 9. “The Crowded Room” follows Danny Sullivan (Holland), who is arrested for a shooting in New York City in 1979. Seyfried plays his interrogator and learns the backstory of Danny’s life.

The trailer for “The Walking Dead: Dead City,” starring Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, has just been released. The new series premieres on June 18 on AMC and AMC+. This new spinoff series follows the popular Maggie (Cohan) and Negan (Morgan) characters from the original “Walking Dead” series in a post-apocalyptic Manhattan, long ago cut off from the mainland, trying to survive among the denizens of the dead.

The Righteous Gemstones are rolling into this summer with the HBO comedy’s two-episode Season 3 premiere on Sunday, June 18 at 10/9c.

The upcoming run, consisting of nine episodes total, “tells the story of a world-famous televangelist family with a long tradition of deviance, greed, and charitable work,” reads the official synopsis. “When the spoiled Gemstone children finally get their wish to take control of the Church, they discover leadership is harder than they imagined and that their extravagant lifestyle comes with a heavy price.”

Celebrity documentaries are all the rage these days, and as a recent New York Magazine article points out, in a feature article about the “murky ethics” in the growing doc and doc series explosion of the last few years, a lot of celeb docs are executive produced by the subject themselves and becoming something of vanity puff pieces or doc infomercials for the subject. But “Arnold,” the new Netflix doc about the legendary Arnold Schwarzenegger, does not list Schwarzenegger as any kind of producer, exec or otherwise, which hopefully bodes well.

Arnold Schwarzenegger has been a significant cultural force in Hollywood for more than 40 years, taking time out to launch a political career and generally conquer the world during that time. After becoming arguably the greatest bodybuilder to ever do it, Arnie parlayed his bodybuilding fame into Hollywood stardom, becoming one of the biggest action stars in the industry. Not bad for a guy who started out driving tanks in the Austrian army. 

Now, Netflix will tell the man's incredible life story in a three-part documentary series that promises to chart Schwarzenegger's journey "from rural Austria to the highest echelons of the American dream."

In aesthetic, it resembles one of those well-heeled HBO high school dramedies à la Bad Education, Vice Principals—all clean lines, wide-angle lenses, and charcoal greys and blues. They usually have lashings of irony, something that Arnold—a film neither cold, cynical, or even a riff on uniformity—hasn’t. “Arnold Is a Model Student,” Thai filmmaker Sorayos Prapapan’s debut feature – premiering in Locarno’s Cineasti del presente section over the weekend – is a lighthearted satire highlighting Thailand’s recent Bad Student movement and authoritarianism in the country’s schools.

The film centres around the titular Arnold, a gold medal Mathematics Olympiad student, whose studies abroad have earnt his model student status in the eyes of his school administrators.

Well, besides Father’s Day and possible scheduled weddings this sixth month in the calendar year marks the celebrated occasion for the ending of the school semester. Whether students are simply looking forward to their summer vacation or managed to complete a milestone in graduating from said grammar school, middle school, high school or college the month of June is closely identified with the school season coming to a close (unless one can escape the doldrums of a summer school session).

With the release of M. Night Shayamalan’s Devil on DVD and Blu-ray yesterday, Owf was challenged with chronicling the ten greatest performances by an actor/actress as the lord of the underworld!

Shayamalan’s horror/thriller – which sees a group of people trapped in an elevator begin to realise that the Devil is amongst them… – is one of the haphazard director’s better offerings of late and engages an interesting narrative.

However, the Devil, Lucifer, Satan, Mephistopheles (or whatever you want to call the epitome of evil!) have featured in film from as early as 1896 and a variety of talent has portrayed the character. Whether it has been for comedic effect or to generate fear in an audience, there have been some fantastic performances within the role. Below are, in my opinion, the ten best. The Evil (1978)

Starring: Richard Crenna, Joanna Pettet, Victor Buono, Andrew Prine and Cassie Yates.

In Gus Trikonis' The Evil, psychologist C.J. Arnold (Richard Crenna) and his wife Caroline (Joanna Pettet) buy a dilapidated mansion with a dark past in the hopes of restoring the estate and turning it into a drug rehabilitation clinic. With the help of some of his students and current patients, the doctor begins work on the mansion - but things take a nasty turn when an ancient spirit starts attacking people. When he opens a secret door in the basement of the house, the psychologist inadvertently releases the malevolent presence...and all hell breaks loose.

In terms of B-Movie ranking, The Evil isn't all that bad. The film takes an admittedly strong stance on the importance of sticking to a more classic ghost story rather than a sleazy, gory filled B-movie romp.

Another week in October, another bounty crop of horror DVDs and Blu-rays. This week we have home entertainment from recent theatrical releases of nightmares of the mind as well as re-releases of classic and campy horror, all with boatloads of extras.

Then there are other horror titles that are being re-released on Blu-ray or in packs for double dipping. On top of that, horror offerings from Asia, past seasons of TV shows, manga, novels, and even video games are all vying for our pocketbooks. And we still have four more weeks of October to go.

Next year October needs to begin in August.
