After much speculation, country singer Orville Peck confirmed that he will not wear his mask when he makes his Broadway debut in Cabaret later this month.
The singer-songwriter has never been seen without his signature mask since dropping his breakthrough debut, Pony, 2019. And he was even wearing it during his interview with The New York Times when he revealed he would finally take it off for Broadway.
“The mask is part of my expression personally as an artist and a very big personal part of me,” Peck said. “But I...

Since the announcement came in January that country music star Orville Peck will replace Adam Lambert as the next Emcee in Broadway’s Cabaret at the KitKat Club, the question in fans’ minds was whether he’ll perform with his trademark mask, perhaps somehow glitzed up to match Cabaret‘s outré style, or whether he’d ditch the trademark altogether.
The answer: Unmasked.
In today’s New York Times profile of the singer, Peck confirms he will not wear a mask on Broadway.
“The mask is part of my expression personally as an artist and a very big personal part of me,” Peck tells The Times. “But I’m here to play this role and to bring respect and integrity and hopefully a good performance to it. It’s not about me. I’m not trying to make it the Orville Peck show.”

“Wait, actually. Is Marti [Reeve's mom] here?” Eva says while looking around the audience. “Okay. Sorry, I actually left something I need for the show. Sorry, one second,” she continued as she walked off stage.
“Hey everyone,” she said as she and Reeve entered the audience. “How are you guys doing? Where is she? There you are. So, um… Sorry, it looks like I’m fondling her, and I am. So, I just needed to get something really important from… my future mother-in-law.”

Just about a year ago, New York audiences breathlessly anticipated the arrival of a heartily hyped West End production of an American classic, Rebecca Frecknall’s pseudo-immersive revival of Cabaret. It was, if not a total disappointment, a letdown, as there was nothing particularly revelatory about Frecknall’s ever-rotating vision of Berlin’s pre-war decadence in a staging that aggressively underlined the material’s self-evident grimness.
And here we are again, anxiously receiving another of Frecknall’s London-lauded takes on an American classic into our prestige-starved harbors. This time it’s Tennessee Williams’s psychological kaleidoscope A Streetcar Named Desire, with Irish A-lister Paul Mescal as the brutish Stanley Kowalski. Is this the underwhelming Kit Kat Club all over again?
Well, yes and no. Frecknall’s production is marked by eyebrow-raising staging choices—a near-constant live drumkit, a heavy reverb on the mics, a series of interpretive dance sequences—that...

Don't get yourself murdered or banished — if you're not finished with season 3 of "The Traitors" US, stop reading now because I'm going to spoil the season finale!
Let me get something really important out of the way. Alan Cumming, the actor known for everything from "Cabaret" to "Josie and the Pussycats" to "Romy and Michele's High School Reunion," does not own a massive castle in Scotland, contrary to what he claims as the host of the hit reality competition show "The Traitors." The castle that's used as the setting of both "The Traitors US" and "The Traitors UK," the latter of which is hosted by English broadcaster Claudia Winkleman, is actually Ardross Castle in Scotland. Again, Cumming does not own it, despite his whole schtick about how he's allowing the players to stay in "his castle."
As a funny aside, the contestants themselves don't even actually spend the night in the castle.

Did Mikey Madison win an Oscar for portraying a prostitute in Anora? (Photo Credit – AnoraFilm Instagram)
The 2025 Academy Awards came and went in a whirlwind, forging legacies for a slew of talents, though it’s the newcomers who galvanize the most intrigue with their ties to the golden statuette. Amid the night’s fervor, one victory stood out — a triumph that spotlights both a fresh face and a storied trope.
Mikey Madison, the 25-year-old dynamo from Anora, seized her first Oscar for Best Actress, outpacing The Substance’s Demi Moore in a twist few had prognosticated. The win, flanked by Anora’s haul of Best Picture, Director, and more, incentivized a floodlight on her nascent Hollywood path.
Maddison’s raw and unapologetic portrayal of the titular sex worker elucidated a character far from cliché, cementing her ascent with a cataclysmic bang. That win didn’t transpire without etching new stats...

Musicals are something of an acquired taste, especially the old-school or more traditional ones. Not everyone is into the whole “people breaking into song” thing, but that is something you can get on board with, there’s no shortage of remarkable musicals from cinema history. There are two versions of West Side Story, Singin’ in the Rain, Cabaret, and all the animated Disney movies, maybe even too many to count.

Broadway seemed to be shedding a bit of winter weight last week as the industry gears up for a busy March and busier April. With two fewer shows on the roster during the week ending February 23 – gone were heavy hitters Romeo + Juliet and All In: Comedy About Love – total grosses of $27,930,129 were off 13.23% from the previous week.
Total attendance for the 26 productions was 231,705, off about 5% from the previous week. The discrepancy between the grosses and attendance percentage drops reflects a lower average ticket price last week – $120.54 – than the $132.29 of the previous week which included the tourist-friendly Presidents Day Weekend.
Two recent arrivals are off to promising starts. Buena Vista Social Club began previews at the Schoenfeld, selling out all three performances for a $447,171 take. The musical opens on March 19.
Another previewing show is Operation Mincemeat, selling out its seven performances at the Golden for a $666,648 gross. Opening night is March 20.

Adam Lambert opened up about taking a stand from the stage while performing Cabaret.
The 43-year-old American Idol alum is playing the Emcee in the latest Broadway production of the classic musical. Earlier this year, he went viral after shutting down someone who laughed at an antisemitic line in one of his songs.
He opened up about the relevance of the play in 2025 and explained why is so outspoken about responding to people in the theater.

In early February, Adam Lambert made waves after he stopped mid-show to admonish audience members who laughed inappropriately during a performance of “Cabaret” on Broadway. Lambert explained his position during a Monday interview on “The View,” arguing that the themes of antisemitism within the classic musical are nothing to laugh at today.
“One of the big themes in the show is antisemitism,” he said. “There’s a scene in the musical where I sing a song to a gorilla, and it’s called ‘If You Could See Her.'”
“Cabaret” is set in pre-wwii Germany as the Nazis are rising to power, and the scene in question features a couple made up of one Jewish person and one who is not.
You can watch the full interview in “The View” clip below:

Adam Lambert is currently starring on Broadway in the acclaimed revival of Cabaret and he just appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to give fans a preview of his performance.
The Grammy-nominated singer performed the Emcee’s song “I Don’t Care Much” during the appearance on Monday night (February 10) in New York City.
Adam is starring in Cabaret through March 30 and he’ll be succeeded in the production by Orville Peck.
Adam previously said of the song, “‘I Don’t Care Much’ is a torch song dealing with indifference that comes at a point in the show where all hope and joy has been eclipsed by the presence of Nazi forces in Berlin… There’s catharsis in the sadness for the listener, and I hope they can feel seen and realize they’re not alone in this moment in time.”

It might sound weird to draw comparisons between a heavy documentary like Johan Grimonprez's Soundtrack to a Coup d'Etat and a classic Hollywood musical, and yet, there is a distinct parallel that can be traced between the Oscar-nominated film and Bob Fosse's Cabaret. In Cabaret, the music played at the Kit Kat Club serves as a soundtrack to the fall of Germany's Weimar Republic and the rise of Hitler and the Nazi Party. That doesn't mean, however, that the songs performed by Liza Minnelliand Joel Grey are nothing more than background noise. Instead, they serve as a diversion, as a commentary on the events of the time, and even as downright propaganda, as brownshirts begin to fill the tables at the titular cabaret. Art, the movie says, particularly music, is not innocent. It is an actor that plays a pivotal role in the goings-on of a certain period in history.

“Cute winter boots.” “Where to find cute winter boots.” “Have you seen my cute winter boots?” In the weeks following Donald Trump’s return to the Oval Office, the phrase has dominated many For You pages on TikTok. But the expression isn’t about creators shopping for lace-up or nonslip footwear options online. It’s a new algorithm-based code word that TikTokers are using to avoid alleged censorship and shadowbanning on the app — and it’s proving the limits of what online awareness-as-activism can really accomplish.

The Academy Awards have staged some iconic showdowns. Think of the tension around “La La Land” versus “Moonlight,” “12 Years a Slave” versus “Gravity” or “The Godfather” versus “Cabaret.” Each was a nail-biter that kept viewers on the edge of their seats. But what happens when six films — “Anora,” “The Brutalist,” “A Complete Unknown,” “Conclave,” “Emilia Pérez” and “Wicked” — are all serious contenders for Hollywood’s most coveted prize? Enter “The Year Without the Frontrunner,” as Variety aptly dubbed it.
So, what is the pathway for each contender?
With 13 nominations, “Emilia Pérez” seems to have the logical edge (although recent controversies could derail that assertion). It has key guild nods and below-the-line Oscar mentions. But in this unpredictable year, historical trends are no guarantee. Major upcoming ceremonies like DGA, PGA and SAG may clarify the race — or make it even messier.

If you’re from out of town (or even a New Yorker who normally avoids the theatre district like the plague), securing coveted seats to blockbuster musicals, plays, and other live shows on Broadway can be confusing. But with a bit of planning, it’s more accessible than ever to buy Broadway tickets to some of the most successful shows — like Hamilton, Wicked, and Chicago, to name a few.

Jennifer Lopez starred in the world premiere of “Kiss of the Spider Woman” at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, realizing a career-long aspiration to perform in a musical film. The Bill Condon-directed feature received a standing ovation at its Sunday night screening at the Eccles Theatre.
The film blends two contrasting storylines: a gritty prison drama set in 1983 Argentina and a vibrant Hollywood musical. It follows Luis Molina, a gay window dresser imprisoned on morals charges, and his cellmate Valentin Arregui, a Marxist revolutionary.
Condon reimagined the 1992 Broadway musical by creating a single fictional film within the narrative. This approach allowed Lopez to showcase her talents in elaborate musical numbers, including a Marilyn Monroe-inspired dance sequence.
“I’ve been waiting for this moment my whole life,” Lopez said after the screening, recalling her childhood inspiration from watching “West Side Story” with her mother. The film represents a technical triumph,...

Jennifer Lopez is not one of those actresses who disappears into a role. For one, she’s too famous to allow the audience to separate artist from character entirely. Often, those characters, whether Selena or in last year’s “Unstoppable” as a sports mom, are extensions of her persona, astral projections of her stature as a global pop superstar into a fantasy movie world that depends on her song-and-dance gifts. For another, a Jennifer Lopez joint is always more about her presence — her name on the marquee, her face under the big bright lights — than her skills in vanishing inside a character.

There can be no question the Broadway musicals of John Kander and Fred Ebb have been charmed when it comes to movie adaptations. Bob Fosse’s 1972 film reinvention of Cabaret won eight Oscars. Director Rob Marshall and screenwriter Bill Condon’s cinematic interpretation of Chicago in 2002 is still the last musical to win the Best Picture Oscar. Both made the musical format work, even for those who hate movie musicals, by integrating the songs so they don’t collide with the narrative but seamlessly fit in with it.

Wicked‘s Cynthia Erivo and Emilia Pérez‘s Karla Sofía Gascón earned their widely predicted Best Actress Oscar nominations on Thursday. Their bids represent a rare double in Oscar history: This is the second time — and first in 60 years — that multiple musical performances are nominated in Best Actress.
Counting just traditional musicals with non-diegetic music, the last time this happened was, naturally, during the heyday of musicals in the 1960s. Julie Andrews and Debbie Reynolds were nominated for their respective 1964 films, Mary Poppins and The Unsinkable Molly Brown, with the former winning. There could’ve been a third musical nominee that year had My Fair Lady‘s Audrey Hepburn made the cut.
Andrews’ victory has been seen as a bit of sweet revenge after producer Jack Warner cast Hepburn instead of Andrews, who originated the role of Eliza Doolittle on Broadway in the film adaptation of My Fair Lady. Not...

The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree — especially at the Oscars.
I’m Still Here‘s Fernanda Torres and Conclave‘s Isabella Rossellini joined their mothers, Fernanda Montenegro and Ingrid Bergman, respectively, as Oscar nominees on Thursday, becoming the fifth and sixth pairs of mother-daughter duos to be nominated for acting Oscars.

It’s Liza with a Z. Not Lisa with an S. Liza Minnelli is among those rare, true living legends who seem irreplaceable. Irreplaceable both in that their talent is immense and that it literally appears nobody from a younger generation has the capacity to do as many things as well as she did them. In Liza we have an iconic singer, dancer, and actor. And let’s not forget a pioneer of fashion! One thinks of peers like Barbra Streisand and Cher as apt comparisons and very few others.
Bruce David Klein’s new documentary Liza: A Truly Terrific Absolutely True Story is an unabashed celebration of the woman as told by all of her best friends. Celebrity talking heads like Mia Farrow, Ben Vereen, Chita Rivera, and Joel Grey speak effervescently about Minnelli. Singer and good friend Michael Feinstein emerges as the central storyteller of the film, alongside Minnelli herself.

Broadway took a somewhat humbling post-holiday slip at the box office last week, with the roster of shows down by three productions and overall receipts off by about 29% from the previous week when the New Year holidays helped boost attendance.
In all, the 30 shows grossed $32,176,529 for the week ending January 12, with attendance of 254,320 down about 13% from the previous week. About 92% of seats on Broadway were occupied, with an average ticket price of $126.52.
Twenty-two of the 30 productions reported decreases in grosses last week.
Going out on a very high note was Stereophonic, which ended its Broadway run on January 12 – a West End engagement and national U.S. tour are planned – with a weekly gross of $1,017,784 and attendance at 100% of capacity at the Golden. The David Adjmi play had recouped its Broadway investment (the play was capitalized at up to $4.8 million.)
Other figures of note:

This claim, included in Universal’s thorough and impressive list of box office achievements for 2024, is technically true: “Domestically ‘Wicked‘ is now … the highest-grossing Broadway adaptation of all-time at the domestic office ahead of ‘Grease’ ($188.62M).”
Also technically true is that “The Grinch” is bigger than “Gone with the Wind,” “Sing” is bigger than “Jaws,” and “Five Nights at Freddy’s” is bigger than “The Godfather.” Also, the 1977 first “Star Wars” is only the third biggest success of that franchise.
Presenting grosses without adjusting skews the real picture of how they compare. It is a prime case of film history erasure, an all-too common occurrence these days. The somewhat (but not impossible in most cases) effort to sort out the true success of films through history starts with adjusting box office takes to current ticket prices. Normally, that is fairly simple, since we know the costs by year and can do the math.

Musicals often go overlooked at the Academy Awards, but there are a handful of career-defining performances in the genre that have received the notable accolade. Chicago is the latest musical to win Best Picture, with recognition for the genre largely coming in the form of wins in the acting categories. Several of these actors play the lead or supporting roles in what's considered to be some of the best musicals of all time. Some of these actors were part of a significant sweep their film had at the Oscars that year, like Rita Moreno in West Side Story.
Others were the only ones to win for their musical film that night. In these roles, celebrated film actors like Anne Hathaway, Jamie Foxx, and Liza Minnelli blew critics and audiences away with their ability to transform into their famous characters, showing a whole new side to them as performers. Additionally, actors...

Australian writer-director Michael Gracey was already several years into developing “The Greatest Showman,” his grand and ambitious musical biopic that took the filmmaker eight years to realize, when his star Hugh Jackman started having cold feet.
“Hugh was losing a bit of confidence in the music,” Gracey recalled in a recent conversation with IndieWire. “When we were really close to going into production, other people started getting in Hugh’s ear about the music not being good enough.” At the time, Gracey was a respected and prolific director of music videos, with deep roots in VFX and animation, as well as music. But he had not yet made his feature filmmaking debut. Feeling like he was losing the power of his voice with Jackman, he thought, “What if it wasn’t just me telling him the songs are actually good? What if someone like Robbie Williams told him that?”

Mikey Madison begins Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or-winning drama “Anora” as a stripper who accepts thousands of dollars to be exclusive with her rich Russian client, Vanya (Mark Eidelstein) for a too-perfect week that ends with a diamond ring on her finger. But as quickly as the marriage came together, Vanya runs away while his family’s goons chase, gag and tie Ani up before forcing her to help them arrange an annulment. In the past 96 years of the Academy Awards, there have only been two years in which two Black women were nominated for Best Actress in the same year. That ignominious statistic could very well change for the better this year, as performers Cynthia Erivo (“Wicked”) and Marianne Jean-Baptiste (“Hard Truths”) are both closing in on nominations.
Erivo’s star turn as Elphaba, a role which won the Best Musical Actress trophy at the 2004 Tony Awards for Idina Menzel, currently ranks fifth in our combined Oscar odds. It would mark her second nomination in the category, following her breakout film role as Harriet Tubman in “Harriet” (2019). The actress earned two nominations that year, also receiving recognition for the song “Stand Up,” which she wrote with Joshuah Brian Campbell. The Tony winner for “The Color Purple” currently has 80% of experts and 40% of Gold Derby editors predicting her for the nom.

Although recordkeeping on the Golden Globes has been somewhat spotty over the course of their 82 years, it appears Netflix’s Emilia Pérez just set one with a whopping 10 nominations making it the most nominated ever for a film in the Musical or Comedy category, beating last year’s Barbie and 1972’s Cabaret by one. Both of those films received 9 nominations overall, and like Emilia Pérez ,were helped by having multiple song nominees. 1975’s Best Motion Picture -Drama nominee Nashville had 11 nominations overall by my count, but 7 of those came with various acting categories including 5 for supporting and 2 for Best Debut (which no longer exists).
Impressive showing indeed for French director Jacques Audiard’s Spanish language production which also had multiple acting nominations including a history making Lead Actress -Drama for trans performer Karla Sofia Gascon. It’s a good day for “Emilia Perez.”
Netflix’s genre-defying awards contender — the streaming giant’s awards season priority — earned 10 Golden Globes nominations on Monday, the most ever for a film in the comedy/musical category and the second-most in Globes history.
Robert Altman’s classic “Nashville” holds the Golden Globes record for nominations with 11 in the drama category. The previous comedy/musical films with the most nominations were “Cabaret” and “Barbie” with nine.
Written and directed by Jacques Audiard, “Emila Perez” is widely expected to be a major player at the Oscars. The film is a musical hybrid, with drama and action movie elements sprinkled throughout its story about a drug cartel leader who undergoes gender-confirmation surgery and begins to live as her true self.

Emilia Pérez had a record-breaking morning, with the Netflix film landing ten Golden Globe nominations, making it the most nominated comedy or musical film in the awards show’s history. It topped last year’s Barbie and 1972’s Cabaret, which each landed nine nominations. (The all-time record holder is 1975’s Nashville, which was a player in the drama category).
Emilia Pérez was a crowd pleaser out of Cannes, with Netflix swooping up the feature soon after its debut at the May festival. It centers on cartel leader Emilia (Karla Sofía Gascón) who hires attorney Rita (Zoe Saldaña) in a plan to fake her death so that she can transition into a woman and live as her true self.
The feature landed Golden Globe nominations for best picture, musical or comedy, as well as best picture, non-English language.

Moana star Auli’i Cravalho speaks out in defense of the emotional moments from the Wicked press tour, which recently went viral. The press tour included a heartfelt interview where Out magazine reporter Tracy Gilchrist shared how audiences—particularly queer viewers—were "really holding space" for the iconic song "Defying Gravity," leaving the film's stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo visibly emotional. The interviewer's reference to "holding space" sparked a wave of memes online, with some poking fun at the stars' teary-eyed responses throughout the tour.
In a conversation with Vanity Fair, Cravalho stood up for Grande and Erivo, passionately defending the emotions on display during the press tour. Both leading stars play pivotal roles in the two-part adaptation of the Broadway musical Wicked, with Grande as Glinda and Erivo as Elphaba. Cravalho, no stranger to musical theater, appreciates the vulnerability required for such roles. Here's what she had to say:...

10 years ago, Auliʻi Cravalho was cast in her first professional acting role as a Disney princess. She would also be the studio’s first Polynesian princess (though the character herself insists she’s not technically a princess), marking a huge moment for Aapi representation.
Two years later, “Moana” officially hit theaters and has proven to have some strong sea legs, becoming the most streamed movie on Disney+ last year. It shot Cravalho to fame, but it also provided her with something that most actresses don’t get right away — or, in some cases, ever.
“Starting with an incredible film like ‘Moana’ meant that I could be choosy [about future roles], that I’m afforded the beauty of being picky,” Cravalho revealed to TheWrap.
The actress took full advantage of that opportunity immediately. Between starring in “Moana” and “Moana 2,” now in theaters everywhere, she’s played a teen facing homelessness in “All Together Now,...

“Still not a princess!” exclaims the young woman who’s about to go save her friends (and likely the world), reunite her scattered community and go down in the history books. “Well, a lot of people think you are,” replies her fellow hero-slash-comic-relief. To wit: Moana may be the daughter of a tribal chief on the South Pacific island of Matunui, and thus could be considered royalty be virtue of her parentage. But she is primarily a wayfinder, tasked with navigating the seas in search of new islands and, this time out,...
