This Classic Giallo Has One of the Most Vicious Twist Endings in Horror
Image
Lido Aldo's debut feature, the 1971 Giallo movie, Short Night of Glass Dolls, begins with the discovery of a dead body in a park. The body itself is Gregory Moore (Jean Sorel), who upon being discovered is brought to a hospital and declared dead, and yet there's something amiss. Gregory's body temperature doesn't decrease, his eyes remain open, and through internal voiceover, it becomes clear that Moore is conscious, yet paralyzed. Gregory's unable to alert any doctor or nurse that he's alive but cannot exercise any movement. As he lies in the cold morgue and the doctors question the peculiarities of his body's state, Gregory tries to figure out how exactly he got here. The film then becomes Gregory's piecing together of his memories, of his search for his missing girlfriend, Mira Svoboda (Barbara Bach), and the conspiracies he uncovers that lead to an ending that is one of the best,...

Gialloween 2020: Staring Down Real-Life Fears Through a Giallo Lens in Short Night Of Glass Dolls
Image
[This October is "Gialloween" on Daily Dead, as we celebrate the Halloween season by diving into the macabre mysteries, creepy kills, and eccentric characters found in some of our favorite giallo films! Keep checking back on Daily Dead this month for more retrospectives on classic, cult, and altogether unforgettable gialli, and visit our online hub to catch up on all of our Gialloween special features!]

“Dead? I’m dead? Can’t be. I’m alive. Can't you tell I'm alive?” These are some of the first thoughts that cross the troubled mind of Gregory Moore (Jean Sorel) at the beginning of Short Night of Glass Dolls (aka La corta notte delle bambole di vetro). And Gregory has a right to be troubled. That’s a common response when someone is fully aware they're being placed on a cold metal slab in a morgue in Prague. But the problem is that Gregory hasn’t really woken up—not entirely. His brain is awake, but the rest of his body isn’t. In true nightmare fashion, he can’t move a muscle in the morgue. Even his heart has seemingly ceased beating, although his wide-open eyes can see the doctors evaluating him, and his brain knows that his next destination could be the autopsy table.

Although his mind is awake,...

Image
In 1968, Dan Rowan, one of the hosts of the variety series Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In, introduced a guest by describing him as “an act you’re just not gonna believe.” “This guy plays the bugle, plays the guitar, and sings — all at the same time. … This is a unique act, he’s the only one of his kind, and we’re lucky.” His co-host, Dick Martin, retorted, “I guess we are lucky … There could have been two.” Rowan brought Martin over to the guest, the Legendary Stardust Cowboy, who dressed in yellow pants,...

Image
Washed Out has released “Paralyzed,” the third single from his upcoming album Purple Noon. The song is accompanied by a tastefully Nsfw video by director Caroline Koning, shot in her native Holland and starring real-life couple Shay and Dorien.

On her inspiration for the video, Koning said: “Human contact, and something as simple as a touch, has new meaning in the context of today. These special times make the viewing experience of physical togetherness a different one, and I wanted to tap into that sentiment in a pure way. The...

George Lazenby in the 1972 Giallo Who Saw Her Die? Available on Blu-ray September 17th From Arrow Video
Former Bond star George Lazenby headlines this classic giallo directed by Aldo Lado as compelling for its haunting atmosphere, twists and turns as for its parallels with another great Venetian horror/thriller Nicolas Roeg s Don t Look Now.

Sculptor Franco Serpieri (Lazenby) welcomes Roberta his young daughter from a failed marriage to Venice, unaware that a disturbed child-killer is stalking the city s canals. When Roberta s body is found floating face-down in the river, the lives of Franco and his estranged wife Elizabeth are ripped asunder. Desperate for vengeance, Franco turns detective in a bid to track down his daughter s killer, and in the process unearths shocking evidence of depravity and corruption which implicates some of the most respected figures in Venetian society.

Released at the height of the giallo boom, this gripping mystery thriller boasts some of the most iconic names associated with the genre on both sides of the camera.

Greatest Horror Movies Ever Made: Part 6: Best (Italian) Giallo Films
The term “giallo” initially referred to cheap yellow paperbacks (printed American mysteries from writers such as Agatha Christie), that were distributed in post-fascist Italy. Applied to cinema, the genre is comprised of equal parts early pulp thrillers, mystery novels, with a willingness to gleefully explore onscreen sex and violence in provocative, innovative ways. Giallos are strikingly different from American crime films: they value style and plot over characterization, and tend towards unapologetic displays of violence, sexual content, and taboo exploration. The genre is known for stylistic excess, characterized by unnatural yet intriguing lighting techniques, convoluted plots, red herrings, extended murder sequences, excessive bloodletting, stylish camerawork and unusual musical arrangements. Amidst the ‘creative kill’ set-pieces are thematic undercurrents along with a whodunit element, usually some sort of twist ending. Here is my list of the best giallo films – made strictly by Italian directors, so don’t expect Black Swan, Amer or...
