Fool Me Once: Garth Brooks Defies Mother Nature in Triumphant Nashville Make-Up Concert
Image
Last July, Garth Brooks was forced to make a last-minute cancellation of his show at Nashville’s Nissan Stadium when dangerous weather conditions rolled through just before he was supposed to go onstage.

The possibility of rain and storms hung in the air for the country star’s first of two rescheduled Stadium Tour dates on Friday, but Brooks wasn’t going to be thwarted this time.

“I’ve never seen rain like that,” Brooks told the crowd in Nashville at the beginning of his set. “Thank you for giving us a second chance!

Spike Lee To Direct Colin Kaepernick Docuseries For ESPN
Image
Spike Lee and Colin Kaepernick are teaming up with ESPN to tackle the life and career of the activist and former NFL player.

Seated together court side at Madison Square Garden for tonight’s New York Knicks match-up against the Memphis Grizzlies, the duo have started production on the docuseries for the Disney-owned sports cabler. Unlike Netflix’s acclaimed mixed genre coming of age Colin in Black & White last year, from Kaepernick and Ava DuVernay, the Lee helmed project is the first unscripted deep dive into the ex-San Francisco 49er’s saga from his own Pov.

A long-time supporter of the unsigned quarterback who has been shunned by the NFL after Kaepernick took a knee in 2016 during the national anthem as a protest against police violence and social injustice, Lee will produce the project with ESPN Films through his 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks. Kaepernick will also produce along with Atlantic journalist Jemele Hill.

The Real Love Story Behind Melissa Joan Hart’s ‘Mistletoe in Montana’ (Video)
Image
Melissa Joan Hart is making Merry…literally! In her latest holiday movie, Mistletoe in Montana, she stars as Merry Cartwright, a Big Sky wrangler who gets roped into an unexpected romance when a dashing single dad and his kids (Hero Hunter and Mallian Butler) book a holiday stay at her dude ranch. This isn’t Hart’s first time at the Christmas-movie rodeo, but it may be the one closest to her, well, heart. She fills us in. This story is inspired by actual events, right? Melissa Joan Hart: I went to my cousin’s wedding, and this is kind of her love story. It’s the opposite, though: She went to the dude ranch, fell in love with a wrangler and then they ended up getting married at the ranch. Instead of ripped from the headlines, it’s ripped out of our real life. How much experience did you have with horses before this?...

Representatives For Aaron Copland’s Music Raise Objections To The Use Of ‘Hoe-Down’ In Donald Trump Video
Image
The representatives for the use of music in Aaron Copland’s estate say that they are reviewing Donald Trump’s team’s use of the late composer’s Hoe-Down in a video that touted his administration’s accomplishments.

The music was featured in the campaign-like spot that the president posted on Monday.

Copland, who died in 1990, bequeathed a large part of his estate to the Aaron Copland Fund for Music, which operates grant programs and gives the greenlight for the use of his music via classical music publisher Boosey & Hawkes.

“The Aaron Copland Fund for Music does not permit the use of Copland’s music in any form of political advertising, and neither the Copland Fund nor Boosey & Hawkes were asked for permission before the video was posted,” said Carol Ann Cheung, a spokesperson for the publisher.

Junior Bonner
Sam Peckinpah was a fine director of actors when the material was right, and his first collaboration with Steve McQueen is an shaded character study about a rodeo family dealing with changing times. Joe Don Baker and Ben Johnson shine, but the movie belongs to Ida Lupino and Robert Preston.

I suppose there were plenty of successful rodeo-themed westerns back in the day, perhaps the kind interrupted by a cowboy song every ten minutes or so.

The Rounders
The laid-back, plot challenged non-violent western gets a boost in this folksy comedy about two aging cowboys with less sense than the horses they tame. Glenn Ford and Henry Fonda star together for the first time, leaving behind their older images… they’re too tender-hearted for their own good. If the sex comedy wasn’t quite so dated, Burt Kennedy’s picture might be a classic.

R.I.P. Cliff Robertson & Andy Whitfield
Two actors familiar to genre audiences passed away over the weekend - one an Oscar winning veteran with a long career behind him, the other a young star unfairly cut down in his prime.

Cliff Robertson, whom most will recognise these days for his portrayal of Peter Parker's father figure Uncle Ben in Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man", passed away at age 88 from natural causes.

Robertson scored an Oscar in 1968 for the lead role in "Charly", an adaptation of "Flowers for Algernon". Other notable roles included "Pt 109," "The Best Man," "Gidget," "Three Days of the Condor," "J.W. Coop" and various TV shows like "Falcon Crest," "Batman" and "The Twilight Zone".

The other tragedy today was the death of 39-year-old "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" star Andy Whitfield. The Welsh-born, Australian-trained actor got his start in Australia in guest roles on numerous local dramas including "All Saints," "Packed to the Rafters" and...

Oscar Winner Cliff Robertson Dead At Age 88
Robertson relaxing on the set of P.T. 109.

By Lee Pfeiffer

Oscar winning actor Cliff Robertson has died at age 88. He passed away a day after his birthday. Robertson had a long and illustrious career that began in the golden days of television and extended to the Spiderman movies of recent years. Although he generally played quiet, dignified characters, Robertson marched to his own drumbeat- a trait that earned him respect but that also damaged aspects of his career. In 1977 when he was still very much an in-demand leading man, Robertson ignored advice to hush up a scandal that involved the head of Columbia Pictures, David Begelman, who had utilized Robertson's name in a bizarre check forging scandal. Begelman was momentarily disgraced, payed a small fine and was later rewarded for his crime by being appointed as the head of MGM. Meanwhile, Robertson found his own career went into immediate decline.
