Sir Michael Caine is a beloved British actor and icon known for his distinct accent and natural charm who initially gained audiences' attention with hit movies such as Get Carter, Gambit, and The Italian Job. Born in London, Caine started his career in show business on the stage, working as a theater assistant, and taking on bit roles. By the 1960s, Caine had made headway in British films, appearing in various espionage thrillers and eventually proving himself to be a promising leading man on the silver screen.

Donald Cammell and Nicolas Roeg’s Performance was shot in July 1968, but its release was postponed by a skittish Warner Bros. until August 1970. The timing couldn’t have been better, since the film not only perfectly encapsulates Swinging London’s faith in “sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll” but also effectively hammers the last nail in the counterculture’s coffin. As a sort of epilogue to the Rolling Stones’s disastrous concert at Altamont, Performance illustrates precisely what can happen in the void left gaping open when performers stop performing.
The film’s title is aptly overdetermined. Reclusive rock star Turner (Mick Jagger) is obviously one kind of performer. But performer, in British slang, also refers to mobsters like Chas (James Fox). In the film, the worlds that these two men inhabit collide and entwine in fascinating fashion. Over the course of the first half, which is dedicated to delineating...

After a dismal 1990s that greatly diminished his stature as one of the most bankable movie stars in Hollywood, Sylvester Stallone kicked off the 2000s with a pair of box office disappointments in "Get Carter" and "Driven." Though the latter reunited him with his "Cliffhanger" director Renny Harlin, moviegoers had very little interest in a film about Cart racing. With his two most valuable franchises, "Rocky" and "Rambo," mothballed due to lack of commercial interest, his once reliable international popularity on the wane, and a finished movie ("D-Tox") gathering dust on the shelf due to horrid test screening scores, Stallone had to humble himself and make a movie that didn't lose tens of millions of dollars for its investors. This meant working small and not demanding a bank-breaking payday.

Armitage was also responsible for the 1972 blaxploitation remake of Get Carter, made during his time working for Roger Corman
George Armitage, director of 90s indie hits Grosse Pointe Blank and Miami Blues, as well as Hit Man, the 70s blaxploitation remake of Get Carter, has died aged 82. Variety reported he died on 15 February in Playa del Rey in California.
Armitage started out in TV, working on the celebrated TV soap opera Peyton Place, then broke into features via Roger Corman’s micro-budget studio New World in the late 1960s. He subsequently specialised in crime films: Grosse Pointe Blank, which starred John Cusack and Minnie Driver, was his biggest commercial hit, and his final directorial credit was the Elmore Leonard adaptation The Big Bounce in 2004.

Sylvester Stallone is one of today's biggest television stars as the titular lead in the hit Paramount+ series, Tulsa King. Looking back, the actor is giving credit to a 25-year-old film of his for helping to prepare him for his Tulsa King role.
On Instagram, Stallone shared a post to acknowledge the 25th anniversary of his 2000 film Get Carter. A remake of Michael Caine's 1971 movie of the same name, Get Carter featured Stallone in the role of a mob enforcer. While the movie flopped at the time of its release, Stallone noted that he considers Get Carter to be one of the best movies he's ever made. He also felt that the film reminds him so much of his new role on Tulsa King that it wouldn't be a stretch to refer to Get Carter as a prequel to the show.

Before Sylvester Stallone became the tough-as-nails mob boss we know in Tulsa King, he was known for taking risks – some that didn’t land as expected. Enter one of his most bizarre flops, a film that Stallone now believes might’ve been a secret training ground for his role in Taylor Sheridan’s hit show.

In his quirky reflection, Stallone calls it the “prequel” to his Tulsa King character, a cheeky nod to how past mistakes can sometimes set the stage for future triumphs.

When we discuss Hollywood flops, it's important to stress that the term "flop" has nothing to do with the quality of the film. It's strictly about the movie's extreme financial failure. Francis Ford Coppola's "One from the Heart" was a massive flop, but, over 40 years later, it's now considered by many to be an artistic triumph (something to keep in mind as we move further away from the wipeout of 2024's "Megalopolis"). Brian De Palma's "Casualties of War" was a costly bomb for the legendary filmmaker, but the movie received rave reviews at the time and still stands as one of the greatest Vietnam War films ever made. And while Michael Lehmann's "Hudson Hawk" might've thrown a dent into Bruce Willis' commercial reputation, people with exquisite taste have come to recognize its anarchic genius.

Sylvester Stallone has a very different view on one of his worst received movies, believing it to be his “best” and most “underrated.” Back in 2000, the action hero took the lead in an ill-fated remake of Michael Caine classic Get Carter, but he does not seem to view it with the contempt that the vast majority of both critics and audiences showed it.
Despite delivering an Oscar-winning performance in Rocky, and starring in many other great action films, it is impossible to deny that Stallone has also produced some of the most incredible dross ever to grace cinema screens. His current movie, Alarum, has become his third movie to score a bottom-of-the-shop 0% Rotten Tomatoes score, and while Get Carter was not quite hammered into the ground to that extent, it was not seen through the rose-tinted spectacles that Stallone appears to be wearing.

Sylvester Stallone's most prominent role right now is in Tulsa King. The Taylor Sheridan-created television series features the star as an aging mafia man sent to Tulsa, Oklahoma after he is released from his 25-year prison sentence. The series began in 2022 and has released two seasons so far. As with many of Sheridan's shows, Tulsa King has been incredibly successful thus far, garnering critical acclaim and high viewership numbers from audiences. Tulsa King season 3 has also been seemingly confirmed by Stallone.
Not all of Stallone's projects have been so lucky. For all of his Oscar-nominated work such as Rocky, the action star has also suffered from critical and box office failure. One of the many reasons that Michael Caine is often cited as being one of the greatest actors of all-time is his ability to reinvent himself. Although Caine became a star thanks to his charismatic performances in Sleuth and Alfie, he was able to stay relevant to a younger generation thanks to the key roles he played in The Muppet Christmas Carol and the various films directed by Christopher Nolan. It is great to see that Caine was able to stay so active, but he did have to step away from some of the genres he was most closely associated with due to his advancing age; early on in his career, Caine played many military serviceman and morally ambiguous criminals. Hollywood does not often give the chance to older actors to get one last shot at the spotlight, but Caine gave one of his best performances ever in the gritty crime thriller Harry Brown,...

Michael Caine's perfect James Bond replacement, The Ipcress File, was unfortunately cut short by two back-to-back sequel flops. With more than 175 acting credits to his name, Caine has starred in classic movies such as The Man Who Would Be King (1975), Hannah and Her Sisters (1986), Get Carter (1971), and Alfie (1966). Caine is also celebrated for starring in several of Christopher Nolan's best movies, such as Interstellar, Inception, The Dark Knight, and The Prestige.
The Ipcress File was released in 1965 and starred Caine and a clever spy in London named Harry Palmer. The film was directed by Sidney J. Furie and also featured appearances by Nigel Green, Guy Doleman, Sue Lloyd, and Gordon Jackson. The Ipcress File received an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score of 97% matched with an audience score of 85%. The success and acclaim of the first film sparked two back-to-back sequels in 1966 and 1967, which tanked hard and essentially sunk the spy franchise.

The 1996 disaster movie, Daylight, will soon be coming to your home in crisp ultra high-definition picture. Blu-ray.com has recently reported that the Sylvester Stallone film from Rob Cohen, who directed Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story and The Fast and the Furious, will be getting a new 4K remastered physical media release from the Kino Lorber distributor. In addition to Stallone, the movie co-starred Amy Brenneman, Viggo Mortensen, Dan Hedaya, and Jay O. Sanders. This new ultra-hd version is expected to hit retailers next year on March 11.
Daylight is not particularly well regarded by Stallone fans, and it had the misfortune of coming out just as disaster movies were bombing left and right. It grossed an abysmal $33 million domestically, which seriously hurt Sly’s career, even though it did well enough overseas that it likely broke even by the time it hit home video. Sean Connery and Michael Caine co-starred in A Bridge Too Far, a massively underrated war epic that received mixed reviews from critics on its initial release, but deserves a lot more love. Connery is best known for playing James Bond in six official movies (and one unofficial one), but he was a screen legend outside his connection to the role of 007. He starred in a wide range of movies, from the psychological thriller Marnie to the Agatha Christie whodunit Murder on the Orient Express. He worked with such legendary directors as Alfred Hitchcock, Sidney Lumet, and John Huston.
These days, Caine is perhaps best known for his collaborations with Christopher Nolan, having played Alfred Pennyworth in The Dark Knight trilogy and Professor John Brand in Interstellar. Gangster movies have long been one of the most successful and beloved corners of cinema, from classics like Get Carter to modern hits like The Irishman. From real criminals like Al Capone to fictionalized characters like the thieves in Reservoir Dogs, the genre covers a range of topics, from personal drama to detective work. At every step, audiences are shown the inner workings of crime families and how they operate, but are often led to identify with a gangster.
Gangster movies typically serve as something of a morality play, exploring the effects of a life of crime on people, from criminals themselves to innocent people and police officers. By the time these stories end, audiences are left to either root for or against key figures, and some films end with justice. A good gangster movie doesn't have to end on a happy note, and they're often at their best when...

Retired British acting legend Michael Caine has given his views on Tom Cruise's superstar status. Two-time Oscar winner Caine made his breakthrough in 1964 with Cy Endfield's epic war movie Zulu, and went on to have one of the most glittering careers in Hollywood. Cruise rose to prominence in 1983 by starring in Risky Business, and its follow-up All The Right Moves, and became one of the most successful and prominent movie stars in the world. His movies have grossed more than $12 billion collectively, making him one of the most bankable and highest-paid actors in movie history.
In Caine's new memoir, per The Times, the Get Carter actor recalls a meeting with a young Cruise that took place around the time Cruise was in Risky Business. Caine remembers Cruise asking for advice that would help him achieve career longevity, as well as his contemporary's positive attitude and will to succeed.

It's a shame that the most recent generation will only know Michael Caine as Alfred from Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy and as the duplicitous NASA scientist in Interstellar. While those are excellent roles in their own right, Caine has so much more to offer and pretty extensive filmography to prove it. The prolific and highly acclaimed actor is as versatile as they come. His filmography, dating back to 1950, with over 130 movies, is a remarkable collection of roles that span every genre. From the espionage drama, The Quiet American, to the original action thriller, Get Carter, there is seemingly no role he can't play.

Michael Caine Was Once Cast As A Different Character In A Sylvester Stallone Remake Of His Own Movie
Michael Caine's underrated role of playing Jack Carter in Get Carter is one of his best performances, but Jack Carter is not the only character he played in the story. In the 1971 version of Get Carter, which was directed by Mike Hodges, Caine plays the movie's lead, a gritty English gangster. However, almost 30 years later, the movie was remade by Sylvester Stallone and Caine was cast in a more minor role, with Stallone playing the lead instead.
The original Get Carter is one of a handful of perfect gangster movies, and demonstrates Michael Caine's incredible talent. The later remake had significant differences and was met with some criticism, but it is still considered one of Sylvester Stallone's more underrated movies. Both versions follow Jack as he searches for the murderer of his brother. While the remake is not one of Michael Caine's best movies, his performance in the original...

The early 2000s were a bad time for Sylvester Stallone professionally. In the mid-nineties, after a short-lived resurgence of three hit movies, Cliffhanger, Demolition Man and The Specialist, Stallone’s career as a bankable action star began to sputter, with Judge Dredd, Assassins and Daylight all losing money. Copland, an indie drama directed by James Mangold, made money and earned Stallone his best reviews since the original Rocky, but his follow-up movies were disastrous. His attempt at a slasher/ horror movie, D-Tox, sat on the shelf for years, finally being released under the lame title Eye See You. His 2000 remake of Get Carter was another disaster, with critics eviscerating him for remaking the Michael Caine classic, with even a cameo from Caine himself not easing their fury. In 2001, he teamed with Cliffhanger’s Renny Harlin on a go-for-broke would-be blockbuster called Driven.

Warning! This article contains Spoilers for Tulsa King season 2.Watching Tulsa King makes me wonder why it took so long for Sylvester Stallone to show how great he is at playing a gangster. Going naked in films can be both positive and liberating or sometimes embarrassing and hilarious for actors. For example, while going nude for Red Sparrow was liberating for Jennifer Lawrence, as it helped her deal with insecurities, on the other hand, Kate Winslet finds them awkward. Quick Links The Night They Raided Minsky's Plot and Cast How Norman Lear and William Friedkin Got Involved Is The Night They Raided Minskys Based on a True Story? Where to Watch The Night The Raided Minsky's
Legendary screenwriter/producer Norman Lear and iconic director William Friedkin carved out careers worthy of praise and admiration. One shaped the future of TV with a string of hit sitcoms, while the other brought forth one of the horror genre's most terrifying creations. Their names are synonyms with their specific craft in shaping their respective industries, and it will surprise some that at one point, the two giants crossed paths to work on a single movie. Moreover, the feature that brought them together was a bawdy musical that celebrated burlesque and teased audiences with the origin of the striptease.

One of Hollywood’s greatest living actors, Michael Caine, is sending his fans into a tizzy over a photo posted to his personal Twitter account. The image depicts an impressive stack of Caine’s films on DVD and Blu-ray, encapsulating the highs and lows of his storied career as an entertainer. While gems like Get Carter, The Last Valley, and Harry Brown adorn the pile, cinematic blights like On Deadly Ground, Jaws: The Revenge, and The Island sit among the crowd.
The variety of films in Caine’s collection speaks volumes about the actor’s sense of humor and accomplishment. While some actors tend to want to cast their cinematic sins to the fiery depths, Caine proudly displays several of his biggest box office bombs and critically panned misfires. For example, Peter Benchley’s The Island is an insane bit of cinema featuring Caine as a kidnap victim of inbred pirates.

Tulsa King is Sylvester Stallone's first fresh scripted project as a leading man since 2018, breaking a grim Rotten Tomatoes streak. Stallone's recent box office success with The Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 doesn't fully count as he had voice or cameo roles. Tulsa King has become Stallone's biggest franchise by default, with the upcoming second season expected in 2025.

However, following the praise he received for 1997's Copland, he went on to a run of bombs, including his Get Carter remake and Driven. Sylvester Stallone may be one of the biggest movie stars in Hollywood, but even though he’s got a lot of successful blockbuster films out there, he’s also had his fair share of flopped projects. Not only did these films tank at the box office but they were also critically slammed.

It’s not easy to determine what kind of films make great profits because people’s preferences and global trends change. However, some of Stallone’s most loathed works were projects he did not carefully choose, or those where his vision was not followed.
Sylvester Stallone Shares Movies He Awfully Regrets

Copland was supposed to be Sylvester Stallone’s comeback movie. Despite earning decent box office and generating Sly’s best reviews in decades, it seemed to be the final nail in his coffin as a leading man, and I don’t understand why. Before Copland, Stallone was headlining huge action movies like Daylight and Judge Dredd, and while they underperformed domestically and overseas, they were still big. One would think that Stallone would have been given an old-school action film to revive his career, but all of a sudden, he was slotted into cheap movies, such as the slasher thriller D-tox, which is also called Eye See You. That movie was so bad that it went direct-to-video, which pretty much meant the end of Stallone’s career for half a dozen years until he managed a major comeback with Rocky Balboa. It would get pretty dire for Sly, but Warner Bros...

It’s a lean month for new original content on HBO/Max. November will see the return of two scripted series in Julia and Rap Sh!t, both of which are debuting their respective second seasons, but this month’s fresh highlight is likely to be Bookie, a new comedy series from the partnership of The Big Bang Theory creator Chuck Lorre, and Nick Bakay. The show tracks an LA bookie called Danny (Sebastian Maniscalco), whose business is in peril as California movies to legalize sports gambling.
Elsewhere in November, there quite a few interesting documentaries to keep an eye on, and two that jump out as “must watch”. The first is Albert Brooks: Defending My Life, which chronicles the aging comedian’s life and career. The second is the previously-released Little Richard: I Am Everything, which tries to peel back the whitewashed canon of Richard Penniman in a true...

Michael Caine has announced his retirement, declaring his newest feature, The Great Escaper, to be his swan song.
Previously, Caine had floated the idea of retirement, and in a new interview with BBC Radio 4's Today, the accomplished actor said that he's now officially retired. He attributes part of this decision to the lack of leading roles that will be coming his way now that he's in his 90s. Caine also explained how the high acclaim that The Great Escaper has received has him feeling like it's a good time to step away, as this will let him wrap up his career on a high note.

Hollywood star Michael Caine says he was familiar with “every mafia guy in Las Vegas” at the height of his fame and he tells how. The star, who turned 90 in March and who famously portrayed a London gangster in ‘Get Carter’, said he got close to mobsters after taking a trip to Sin City with Frank Sinatra, reports aceshowbiz.com.
“I’ll tell you who liked a laugh – Frank Sinatra. He was very nice, he became my friend, and he loved to laugh. But he never did many things that made you laugh. He was very tough. He took me to Las Vegas on his private plane, and then I knew every mafia guy in Las Vegas. I had dinner with them all,” he told the Daily Telegraph.
Caine first met Sinatra when the actor went to Hollywood in the mid-1960s, where he said he was amazed to be mixing with stars he idolised.

The setting of Albany, New York serves as a compelling and underutilized backdrop for the noir and thriller elements of The Good Mother. Cinematographer Charlotte Hornsby uses color to convey the themes of despair and loneliness in the film, deviating from conventional aesthetics. The on-screen dynamic between Hilary Swank and Olivia Cooke brings tenderness and depth to the characters of Marissa and Paige, creating a memorable experience for viewers.
The Good Mother follows Marissa (Hilary Swank) after the death of her estranged son. She forms an unlikely alliance with his pregnant girlfriend Paige (Olivia Cooke) as the two of them work together to track down those who are responsible. They end up discovering a world of drugs and corruption in the underbelly of Albany, New York.

Six U.K. works-in-progress have been selected for the 12th edition of Locarno’s First Look, an international launchpad for films in post-production taking place during Locarno Pro Days.
Since its introduction in 2012, First Look has already focused on Colombia, Mexico, Chile, Brazil, Israel, Poland, the Baltic Countries, Portugal, Serbia, Switzerland and Germany
This year, the late Mike Hodges – known for “Get Carter” or “Flash Gordon” – will be celebrated in “All at Sea,” produced by Hurricane Films, a semi-autobiographical documentary depicting his life. The film was directed, written and narrated by Hodges himself.
“We have been working with Mike on this feature documentary over the past three, four years. We lost him in December, but luckily, we have a director’s cut and an even more pressing need to make sure his final film sees the light of the big screen,” says Solon Papadopoulos.
“Mike was a humble visionary and a delight to work with.

Davy Chou’s lovely drama about a young woman searching for her past follows in the footsteps of The Deer Hunter, Get Carter, Tiny Furniture and more
Earlier this year I visited my home city of Johannesburg after seven years away, to find – as I do every time I return – everything at once the same and entirely different: old houses and haunts nestled just as I left them, but surrounded by unfamiliar spikes of development and decay. “You can’t go home again” goes the old phrase, but we can and we do, the warmth of nostalgia constantly battling the shock of the new.
That tension is why homecoming is a such a recurrent, irresistible theme in the movies, though Davy Chou’s lovely, glimmering Return to Seoul (Mubi) offers a less common angle on that bittersweet pang. Its Gen-z protagonist, Freddie (a wonderful Park Ji-min), is searching for any...

Confidential Informant opens with a voiceover telling us what wonderful people cops are, especially those with combat experience. Case in point Tom Moran and Mike Thorton. We get to see them raid a crack operation and then lie to their superior over little things like not having a search warrant. Wonderful people indeed.
While tossing a baseball around with his son Moran collapses in pain. His wife Anna tells him he needs to see a doctor. He’s seen a doctor, three of them in fact, and they all tell him he has stomach cancer and not too long to live. Coincidentally enough another cop, Frank, was talking at the bar about how much money the department pays out to your family if...

Britt Ekland, who starred opposite Roger Moore in The Man with the Golden Gun, weighs in on the evolving nature of the Bond Girl within the James Bond franchise. Assuming the role of 007’s personal secretary Mary Goodnight, The Man with the Golden Gun serves as the only cinematic appearance of Ekland’s character despite being a recurring figure in the original Ian Fleming novels. Rising to fame off the back of her appearance in 1971’s Get Carter, Ekland’s status as a rising sex symbol, along with her high-profile personal life, would eventually land her the role of a Bond Girl.
During a recent interview published by Metro, Ekland reflects on her time in the Bond franchise and how the Bond Girl trope has evolved in later years. Claiming that “they are Bond women today,” the actor admits that the working conditions in modern Bond films are a vast...

A new season of The Wicker Man is upon us. The classic 1973 horror film, which is arguably the best-known of three British films from its era that embody “folk horror” (the others being Witchfinder General and Blood on Satan’s Claw), is returning to UK cinemas for one night on June 21 in a special new 4K remastered version of the “Final Cut,” complete with re-edited footage deleted from the original, troubled theatrical release.
Following that, the three existing versions of the film (The Wicker Man may rival Blade Runner in the department of different cuts), all in 4K Uhd, will be released in an exclusive 50th anniversary collector’s edition on Sept. 4. The five-disc set will also contain a bevy of goodies, including new essays, an EP of music, and plenty of other bonus content.
Despite a turbulent production and initial release, The Wicker Man has only grown in stature over...
