    The Railway Children is a 1906 children's book by English author Edith Nesbit [1858-1924]. The book was adapted for the screen by British film-maker Lionel Jeffries, who also directed the film. A remake of Les enfants du chemin de fer (2000) was released in 2000.

    Descriptions of the movie frequently call it "Edwardian", which refers to the reign of King Edward VII from 1901-1910. When receiving their watches for averting disaster after the landslide, the 'old gentleman' says that it is 1905.



    They are the three Waterbury children, Roberta ("Bobbie") (Jenny Agutter), Peter (Gary Warren), and Phyllis (Sally Thomsett).
