Lucasfilm was seemingly looking to expand the world of Indiana Jonesonto Disney+, similar to Star Wars, but Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny might have complicated that. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny was the fifth and final chapter in the long-running film franchise, and it was highly publicized for being Harrison Ford's final time playing the title role. With Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy seemingly saying only Harrison Ford would play Indiana Jones, there doesn't seem like much growth for the franchise expansion. However, at one point in time, Lucasfilm apparently had a few ideas to expand the series, one that could have fleshed out the supporting characters in Indiana Jones's life.

During the latest episode of the popular movie podcast Blank Check with Griffin & David, co-host Griffin Newman reveals he previously auditioned for an Untitled Lucasfilm animated series that seemingly was an Indiana Jones-style show.

Even in the video game space, franchises like Tomb Raider and Uncharted have obviously been inspired by the ingenuity associated with Indiana Jones, and some of the most memorable action moments in those games owe some DNA to the series.

For the most part, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is eager to make the most of every setting, whether that's the rooftops of the Vatican or a frozen ship found in the unlikeliest of places. If any detail in The Great Circle seems like a potential Chekhov's gun, it's typically a safe bet that it will end up firing.

In 1989, a film with a bonkers premise was released in theaters and became one of the highest-grossing films of the year. The Indiana Jones franchise returned for one last huzzah in 2023, something that a decade ago would have seemed like the most unlikely movie sequel to ever be made. However, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny brought Harrison Ford back as the adventuring archaeologist for a final mission to track down an impossible artifact and discover powers beyond comprehension. Despite the best efforts of everyone involved, the movie failed to spark at the box office, and disappointed with many of its reviews.

If any blockbuster franchise should be easy to adapt into a good video game, it's Indiana Jones, but spinning the source material into a truly great game is a less enviable task. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle ends a long hiatus for the archaeologist's interactive adventures, re-appearing in a world where the Uncharted series has already redefined the genre. With the newest outing, developer MachineGames attempts to avoid retracing Nathan Drake's steps while wrangling a game into something that genuinely resembles the movies, an ambitious venture with an appropriate touch of daredevilry.

The game opens with a bit of fan service that more or less stakes out this claim, diligently recreating the set piece from the start of Raiders of the Lost Ark before pivoting into its own story. Situated between Raiders and The Last Crusade, The Great Circle is interested in the same subjects as the franchise's most memorable films.

It features brief glimpses at the landmarks that'll feature prominently in the game: the Vatican, various ancient temples, and a murky swamp.

It's also the first time any trailer for The Great Circle has featured such an extensive look at gameplay. In the three-minute preview, Indy can be seen solving puzzles, swinging across chasms, and knocking over enemies with his signature whip.
