Image
NBC’s “The Voice” finale is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 10 at 9/8c, which is when the winner of Season 26 will finally be crowned. But will it be Sofronio Vasquez or Shye of Team Michael Bublé, Danny Joseph of Team Reba McEntire, Jeremy Beloate of Team Snoop Dogg, or Sydney Sterlace of Team Gwen Stefani? Vote in our “The Voice” finale poll below, and then be sure to defend your choice in the comments section.

Sofronio was a four-chair turn in the blind auditions with the song “I’m Goin’ Down,” joining Team Bublé. He then won his battle of “The Power of Love” against Aliyah Khaylyn. In the knockouts, he sang “You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me” and beat out Kiara Vega and Jeremy Beloate. Sofronio performed “Crying” in the playoffs, “If I Can Dream” and “Every Breath You Take” in the top eight, and “Unstoppable” and...

Image
Going into Monday’s Season 26 finale of The Voice, things were looking mighty good for rookie coach Michael Bublé. While fellow first-timer Snoop Dogg and returnees Gwen Stefani and Reba McEntire only managed to get one of their two contestants in the Top 8 all the way to the Top 5, the jazz crooner had successfully steered both Sofronio Vasquez and Shye across the finish line. But, when it counted the most, did they deliver the kind of performances that would get their coach — and themselves — the win? Read on…

Movie Poster of the Week: The Posters of the 7th New York Film Festival
Above: Us one sheet for Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice. Two weeks ago, as the 57th New York Film Festival kicked off, I griped about the uninspiring quality of the posters for the films in the festival’s main slate. 50 years ago it was a very different story. The posters I have found for the 19 films in the 1969 main selection make up a dazzling collection of illustration and forward thinking graphic design, even, or especially, the type-only poster for the only studio film in the festival: Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice which was the opening night film on September 16 (notably a Tuesday evening).Of course, many of these posters might have been made months or even a year after the festival, since we’re looking back with half a century of hindsight, and many of this year’s designs will no doubt be updated, but this was also the era in which...

America's Got Talent Season 14 Finale: Who Will Win? And Who Should Win?
America’s Got Talent is hoping to end Season 14 on a high note, with eight of its final 10 acts being either solo musicians or vocal groups. And with Wednesday’s grand finale (NBC, 8/7c) fast approaching, time is running out for the viewers to decide their fates.

Of course, if there’s one thing we’ve learned from watching the past 13 seasons of this show, it’s that the deserving act isn’t necessarily the one that ends up taking home the grand prize. With that in mind, have another look at this season’s final 10 acts and ask yourself...

Cmt Music Awards 2019: Brothers Osborne, Maren Morris Among Top Nominees
Miranda Lambert
It’s a four-way tie for most nominations at the 2019 Cmt Music Awards, as Miranda Lambert, Brothers Osborne, Maren Morris and Zac Brown Band each garnered three nods. The nominations were announced by “Closer to You” singer Carly Pearce this morning on NBC’s Today.

Morris’ uplifting 2019 single “Girl” earned the singer-songwriter nominations for Video of the Year as well as Female Video of the Year. Additionally, her friendship with Brandi Carlile earned a third nomination for their performance of Aretha Franklin’s “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural...

Maren Morris, Miranda Lambert Among Top Nominees for Cmt Awards
Brothers Osborne
Brothers Osborne, Maren Morris, Miranda Lambert and the Zac Brown Band are tied for the most nominations each, three, for this year’s Cmt Music Awards, set to air live on the country music network June 5.

The list of artists with two nods in the network’s eight categories is an exceptionally long one: Brandi Carlile, Carrie Underwood, Cole Swindell, Dan + Shay, Dierks Bentley, Eric Church, Florida Georgia Line, Jason Aldean, Julia Michaels, Kacey Musgraves, Kane Brown, Keith Urban, Kelsea Ballerini, Little Big Town, Luke Bryan, Luke Combs, Sugarland and Taylor Swift.

The number of non-country artists up for CMTs is plentiful — starting with Swift, who self-deported from the genre some years back, but is up for collaborative video of the year and duo of the year for appearing with Sugarland in “Babe,” which she wrote and gave to the Nashville duo to record before making her video cameo.

Kelly Clarkson says goodbye to Jackson Marlow on ‘The Voice’ as ‘unbridled’ Abby Kasch wins country battle [Watch]
The Voice (2011)
During Monday’s third battle round episode of “The Voice” Season 16, Kelly Clarkson paired up Jackson Marlow and Abby Kasch for a country sing-off to Joe Dee Messina and Tim McGraw‘s “Bring on the Rain” (watch above). In the rehearsals Jackson admitted that he’d never sung harmonies before, while Abby shared a fun story about how she’d met mentor Kelsea Ballerini two years earlier. Even though Kelly desperately wanted a male country artist on her team, Abby was the stronger vocalist so she had to send Jackson packing.

John Legend pits soul (Lisa Ramey) vs. pop rock (Betsy Ade) in ‘The Voice’ battle to ‘The Joke,’ but who ‘electrified’ him more? [Watch]
The Voice (2011)
During Monday’s third battle round episode of “The Voice” Season 16, John Legend paired up soul singer Lisa Ramey and pop rock artist Betsy Ade for a powerful sing-off to Brandi Carlile‘s “The Joke” (watch above). Before the battle John had his fingers crossed that another coach would steal the artist he decided not to advance, and his dreams ended up coming true. John chose to keep Lisa on his team for next week’s Live Cross Battles, while Kelly Clarkson swooped in to steal Betsy, giving her yet another female vocalist to mentor.

“First of all I would like to thank the gentlemen for not helping me at all in my decision,” John said about how Blake Shelton and Adam Levine refused to name the winner of the battle.

The Voice Recap: Which Singers Soared and Bored on Night 3 of the Battles? — Plus, About That Big Twist Coming Up…
As we drew ever nearer to the end of The Voice’s Season 16 Battles Monday, we also closed in on what last week’s promo called “the twist no one will see coming.” Except for the fact that several websites have already predicted that the twist would be the replacement of the traditional Knockouts with Live Cross Battles. What are they, exactly? If the American version of the show follows the format of the international versions that have instituted Live Cross Battles, they pit members of different teams against one another and allow viewers’ votes, not the coaches, to decide the winners.

'The Voice': Battles Bring More Steals
The Battle Round continued Monday night on the 16th season of NBC's The Voice. Coaches Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, Kelly Clarkson and John Legend tapped celebrity advisors Charlie Puth, Brooks & Dunn, Kelsea Ballerini and Khalid to help prepare their artists for the competition.

The first Battle came from Team Legend. Betsy Ade and Lisa Ramey sang “The Joke” by Brandi Carlile. Legend challenged them to really dig into the rock sides of their voices. Khalid was particularly enthralled with Ramey’s voice, but both artists brought the heat in their performance. They put a lot of power behind ...

The Eclipse Viewer – Episode 32 – Pearls of the Czech New Wave, Part 2
This podcast focuses on Criterion’s Eclipse Series of DVDs. Hosts David Blakeslee and Trevor Berrett give an overview of each box and offer their perspectives on the unique treasures they find inside. In this episode, David and Trevor conclude their two-part discussion of Eclipse Series 32: Pearls of the Czech New Wave.

About the films:

Of all the cinematic New Waves that broke over the world in the 1960s, the one in Czechoslovakia was among the most fruitful, fascinating, and radical. With a wicked sense of humor and a healthy streak of surrealism, a group of fearless directors—including eventual Oscar winners Miloš Forman and Ján Kadár—began to use film to speak out about the hypocrisy and absurdity of the Communist state. A defining work was the 1966 omnibus film Pearls of the Deep, which introduced five of the movement’s essential voices: Věra Chytilová, Jaromil Jireš, Jiří Menzel,...

A scene from Věra Chytilová's 1966 farce Daisies.

Of all the cinematic New Waves that broke over the world in the 1960s, the one in Czechoslovakia was among the most fascinating and radical, as can be seen in the five feature-length films and five shorts found in Criterion’s Eclipse Series 32: Pearls of The Czech New Wave.

With a wicked sense of humor and a healthy streak of surrealism, a group of directors in Czechoslovakia —including future Oscar winners Miloš Forman (One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest) and Ján Kadár (The Shop on Main Street)—began to use film to speak out about the hypocrisy and absurdity of the Communist state.

The four-disc collection kicks off the 1966 omnibus film Pearls of the Deep, which introduced five of the movement’s best-known voices: Věra Chytilová, Jaromil Jireš, Jiří Menzel, Jan Němec,...
