Peter Dinklage is co-stars with the legendary, Shirley MacLaine in American Dreamer, a dark comedy from Plaion Pictures which will be available for digital download on March 17th. Will this St. Patrick’s Day be a lucky one for film lovers lovers worldwide? Let’s explore. I was first introduced to the on screen work of Peter Dinklage in 2003 when a friend in Los Angeles who was trying to break into the business, invited me to see what he called a groundbreaking feat of acting in the indie film, The Station Agent. I was deeply affected by this drama that found Dinklage playing a reclusive, antisocial man who ends up living in an abandoned train depot, who comes in and out of his shell thanks to unexpected relationships with his neighbors turned friends. Peter Dinklage’s Unmatched Screen Presence In the two decades since, I’ve seen Dinklage pop up...

A household name in Italy and the rest of the world, Monica Bellucci is a top-notch model and actor. She had her breakthrough role in the arthouse movie The Apartment in 1996, which earned the star a César Award nomination for Most Promising Actress. However, Bellucci's breakout was in Francis Ford Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula, as it was the movie that introduced Bellucci to Hollywood and gave her some exposure.

Film historian Karina Longworth‘s “You Must Remember This” podcast has been beloved by cinephiles ever since it launched 11 years ago to explore “the secret and/or forgotten histories of Hollywood’s first century.” The latest season, “The Old Man Is Still Alive,” is Longworth’s most enlightening and entertaining to date. A deep dive into the late-career transformations of Hollywood legends, including Howard Hawks, Alfred Hitchcock, and Otto Preminger, “The Old Man Is Still Alive” explores how veteran directors met the challenges of an evolving industry and changing tastes with varying degrees of artistic and commercial success.
The idea for the season began with a 2023 trip to the Cinémathèque Française, where Longworth saw Vincente Minnelli’s “The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse” for the first time. “I thought of myself as a big Minnelli fan, and I had not even known this movie existed,” Longworth told IndieWire. “I went...

There are few directors who remain as prolific and as fascinating as Billy Wilder. Born and raised in Austria, Wilder moved to America in 1934, amid the growing fascist conflict in Europe at the time. Once in Hollywood, Wilder brought his unique style and incredible sensibility to the screen and created a film canon that is still one of the industry’s best. Whether it’s his Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine-led classic, The Apartment, or the ahead-of-its-time icon, Some Like It Hot, Wilder’s filmography is truly a standout. However, one picture that often gets overlooked is his dark comedy, A Foreign Affair. What started out as a propaganda film became a deeply personal piece for Wilder, one filled with stars, intrigue, and even controversy with U.S. government officials.

With the 97th Academy Awards on the horizon, many fans are revisiting Oscar-nominated and Oscar-winning classic movies to see if they hold up. From recent winners like Green Book and Crash, already aging interestingly, to old-school classics like Casablanca and The Apartment, proving their timelessness. The same everlasting question is dredged up every single year: Decades before the release of the Oscar-winning film No Country for Old Men, the Coen brothers were raking in awards nominations left and right for Fargo, Barton Fink, and more.
However, it cannot be ignored that in the years immediately preceding their Oscar-winning year with the hit Western, the brotherly duo was experiencing something of a critical cold streak. 2004 saw the release of The Ladykillers, the lowest rated film in the Coen brothers catalog by a wide margin.

Jack Lemmon was the two-time Oscar-winner who starred in dozens of films, working until his death in 2001 at the age of 76. But how many of those titles are classics? Let’s take a look back at 25 of his greatest movies, ranked worst to best.
Lemmon won his first Oscar as Best Supporting Actor for “Mister Roberts” (1955). A second Oscar for Best Actor followed for “Save the Tiger” (1973), making him the first person to pull off victories in both categories. He competed six more times for Best Actor throughout his career.
He is perhaps best known for his long collaboration with Walter Matthau, with whom he made 11 films. In films such as “The Fortune Cookie” (1966), “The Odd Couple” (1968), and “Grumpy Old Men” (1993), Lemmon’s fastidiousness played beautifully off of Matthau’s scruffiness.
On the small screen, Lemmon earned Emmys for “‘S Wonderful, ‘S Marvelous, ‘S Gershwin” (Best Variety Performer in 1972) and...

Seinfeld is undeniably one of the greatest TV sitcoms of the 1990s. With its unique blend of dark humor and relatable neuroses, it's still just as funny and clever as it was 30 years ago. A show about nothing should never have worked on paper. After all, how could it be pitched to executives at a network? (Seinfeld hilariously poked fun at this with a story arc in season four.) That's why credit for the show's success has to go to creator Larry David's razor-sharp writing and also to the incredible chemistry among the four main leads: Jerry Seinfeld as Jerry, Jason Alexander as George Costanza, Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Elaine Benes, and Michael Richards as Cosmo Kramer.
While the four leads are the heart of Seinfeld, viewers shouldn't overlook the equally interesting side characters that pop in and out throughout the series. Wayne Knight is a good punchline for Jerry's disgusted "hellos,...

It remains to be seen if any female directors earn a nomination for Best Director at the Oscars in 2025. The Best Director Oscar has been a part of the annual Academy Awards ceremony since the event began in 1929, though in the first year it was presented as a pair of awards split between the "Comedy" and "Drama" categories. Although the Academy Awards present prizes in a wide - and growing - variety of categories, Best Director is considered one of the "Big Five" awards, a group that also includes the Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Screenplay Oscars.
Over the years, a number of notable filmmakers have won the award, including Steven Spielberg, Clint Eastwood, Billy Wilder, Ang Lee, and Frank Capra. At the time of writing, the nominees for the 2025 Best Director Oscar are unknown. Because of delays amid the Los Angeles wildfires, deliberation was delayed by two days,...

The Golden Globes have been honoring comedies since the 1950s and the days of such Billy Wilder gems as The Apartment and Some Like It Hot. But the category — which for the past 60 years has crowned a single winner among comedies and musicals — hasn’t always experienced smooth sailing.
How one defines a comedy — is it punchlines? pratfalls? subtle satire? — has been just one of the issues bedeviling the award. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association began playing even more fast and loose with definitions earlier this century when it increasingly nominated movies that seemed neither particularly funny nor acclaimed, instead using the category to bring popular films and stars into the fold that would otherwise have no way of getting there.
At the moment, the smaller, clubbier HFPA has been disbanded in favor of a larger and more representative group of global journalists. This has cut down on the number of nominated howlers,...

American actress, Shirley MacLaine is best known for her quirky, strong-willed female roles in exceptional classic films such as Billy Wilder's The Apartment, Terms of Endearment, and Steel Magnolias. The six-time Oscar nominee was born in Richmond, Virginia, and the summer before her senior year in high school, took a leap of faith and traveled to New York City where she earned a minor role in the chorus of the popular stage production of Oklahoma! After graduating, MacLaine returned to the Big Apple where she appeared in several productions before being spotted by comedy legend, Jerry Lewis.

Winter, often perceived as the bleakest season with its barren landscape, year-end melancholy, and unresolved struggles, has also been eulogized for its introspective beauty. Austrian poet Rilke, writing to a woman devastated by her husband’s desertion, described winter as a time to nurture one’s inner garden—tending to the mind and spirit after a period of endurance. Albert Camus echoed this sentiment: “In the depths of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer.” Similarly, films like The Holiday depict this growth, framing heartbreak and recovery against the cozy charm of swapped holiday lodgings, emphasizing renewal and comfort over sorrow.
Here are ten films like “The Holiday” that somewhat capture the same spirit:
10. Serendipity (2001)
That winter, and by extension, Christmas, is supposed to be interspersed with miracles is retold through “Serendipity.” One element in particular echoes throughout the film: the appeal of fate and destiny.

John Wayne was nominated for an Oscar three times across his 50-year career, but he only walked home with one. Wayne starred in around 80 Westerns, so his defining image in pop culture is as a macho, no-nonsense cowboy. This gives a limited view of his range because while he often played variations on the same character, he delivered some layered performances too. The Searchers is Wayne's best and darkest work, while he's genuinely charming in the romantic drama The Quiet Man. Still, Wayne rarely got much respect from the Academy Awards.
Many of the John Wayne/John Ford movie collaborations received great reviews, but somehow, none of the star's Oscar nods came from those films. Wayne also picked up several awards on behalf of other performers, including Gary Cooper for High Noon; this is a little bizarre in hindsight, as Wayne deeply hated High Noon and its moral message. Although there is no shortage of Christmas movies out there, very few of them end up lasting a long time in the public consciousness. The last movie to truly prove itself long-term was the 2003 comedy "Elf," which is up there on most people's rewatch list every time the holidays come around. For the most part, though, our favorite Christmas movies are the older ones, like "Home Alone" (1990), "A Christmas Story" (1983), "A Christmas Carol" (1951), or "Miracle on 34th Street" (1947).
Before all of those was "It's a Wonderful Life," which came out in 1946 and is now considered the absolute best film the Christmas genre has to offer. With a score of 8.6 out of 10 on IMDb, the movie is ranked 21st among the site's top movies ever. In 2024, at least, nobody's got a bad thing to say about the film. Paolo Sorrentino – whose latest film “Parthenope” is scoring record-breaking grosses at the Italian box office – is set to return behind camera to shoot “La Grazia,” a drama that will re-team the Oscar-winning director with “The Great Beauty” actor Toni Servillo.

The holiday season is here, even if you wish that the Christmas season didn't truly start until after Thanksgiving. Naturally, movie studios have already begun to foist holiday movies upon the world, whether it's Hallmark-style straight-to-streaming fluff like "Hot Frosty" or the extremely big-budget action-adventure "Red One," starring Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans as an unlikely duo who have to team up to rescue none other than Santa Claus himself from being kidnapped and ruining the holiday altogether. But for those of us who may love films but want something a little different out of the movies that ring in the extended holiday season from Thanksgiving all the way through New Year's Day, try out these 12 movies for size. We won't get into any standard-issue "Is 'Die Hard' a Christmas movie?" debates in this list. Instead, let's just look chronologically at these 12 very different kinds of holiday movies.

Since its creation nearly a century ago, the Oscars has seen many talented actors receive nominations across the Academy's different acting categories. The Oscars are recognized as the most coveted awards in the movie industry. Since its first award ceremony in 1929, many actors have had the honor of winning the Oscar for their acting abilities in various acclaimed movies.
The Academy has four different categories where a person's acting abilities are recognized: Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress. Dozens of actors, such as Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert Downey Jr, received several nominations before ever winning an Oscar. Others have a mix of nominations and wins between all four of the available categories.

The Night Court revival is far from the original series. However, since its first season, it's been a hit. Night Court's revival is simply hilarious. Every episode is packed with comedy, and some of them have so many good jokes that viewers can't stop laughing.
Melissa Rauch's Abby Stone spends a little time at the beginning of Season 1 finding her groove. While her comedic side kicks in later on in the season, Dan Fielding and Olivia turn out to be very funny. The two characters are effortless, delivering clever one-liners and overly dramatic reactions. Season 2 adds in Flobert and Wyatt, who bring in their comedic A-game, gifting fans laugh after laugh.

“The One with the Blackout,” the seventh episode of “Friends’” inaugural season, was notable for several reasons. It first introduced viewers to both the gang’s miserly broomstick-waving neighbor Mr. Heckles and Ross’ first rival for Rachel’s affections, Italian stallion Paolo. It apparently added the term ‘friend zone’ to the English lexicon as a result. And, as its title suggests, it formed part of an ingenious marketing strategy in which three NBC sitcoms were deliberately plunged into darkness.
Celebrating its 30th anniversary this month (November 3), Blackout Thursday was the brainwave of Dan Holm, a promotional producer also responsible for the term ‘Must See TV.’ Alongside the comedy that would prove to be the network’s most successful, the programming stunt also included one of the many forgettable one-seasoners that failed to ride its coattails, the Dabney Coleman-starring “Madman of the People,” and the 12-time Emmy-winning “Mad About You.

Shirley MacLaine is making a ghastly racket. It sounds like a combination of retching and the “aack” noise that the protagonist of that old “Cathy” comic strip used to make whenever she was nauseated, horrified, infuriated or you name it. We’re discussing an encounter that MacLaine had with Donald Trump in the ’80s, when she went to look at an apartment in one of his buildings. “In his head, I could see he was undressing himself and me, and I got out of there very fast,” MacLaine writes in her new book, “The Wall of Life: Pictures and Stories From This Marvelous Lifetime.”
MacLaine is even more animated when I ask her what she made of the real estate developer turned Maga leader. “Did you hear me shriek?” she asks. “I think that says it all.” She pauses for dramatic effect before delivering a final, emphatic: “Yuck!”

Shirley MacLaine Opens Up About Her Long and Successful Acting Career
Shirley MacLaine is one of the last greats still alive that acted all the way from black and white to color television, and through the years, she’s remained as open as an open book.
She’s fashionable, she’s iconic, and she’s, best of all, a nontraditional woman at a time when the word “woke” hasn’t even started stirring from slumber.

It's not uncommon for a line or a short scene in a movie to start feeling a bit outdated over time. Even films that feel timeless as a whole may contain elements that don't always hold up perfectly. Once in a while, though, there are entire films whose plots become obsolete due to developments in modern technology. Problems that once would have sent characters off on whole adventures can now be solved with the push of a button.
Now, this does not necessarily take away from the quality of the film itself. It is important to remember that all films are the product of their times; it's not the filmmakers' fault that the new technology did not exist when the idea for the movie was conceived. Nevertheless, it can still be enjoyable to reflect on how different these films would be if they had occurred in the present day. Though...

There seems to be a new subgenre of horror/thriller movies emerging of late: ‘Game night gone wrong’. We’ve had the bloody-murder of Bodies Bodies Bodies and the demonic possession of Talk To Me — and now we have the literal mind-bending chaos of It’s What’s Inside, a fun and stylish rethink of body-swap movies. What if, this film posits, instead of two people swapping bodies, as has been traditional — it was eight people?
It has been described as “Clue for Zoomers”, which is not far off the mark. Like Bodies Bodies Bodies and Talk To Me, this is a film made explicitly for and about Generation Z, and deeply considers their obsessions, anxieties and pathologies. It begins in a frantic manner, reflecting the social-media generation’s attention-demanded brains, as Shelby (Brittany O'Grady), our lead, frantically scrolls through her Instagram, bombarded with data and input. She’s dating Cyrus (James Morosini...

Warning: This article contains Major Spoilers in It's What's Inside.Netflix's It's What's Inside includes an interesting soundtrack featuring predominantly instrumental music that helps add tension and shape the plot. The comedy-horror movie follows a group of friends who play a body-swapping game that leads to deadly consequences. After its strong debut, Netflix quickly snatched up the expensive Sundance movie, adding the title to its catalog of exclusive content.
It's What's Inside has gone over well with critics, gaining an impressive 77% score on Rotten Tomatoes before its Netflix debut. Many factors contribute to the movie's success, including the cinematography, the color palette, and the fun premise. Many critics have praised It's What's Inside's engaging characters, who are both flawed and interesting. However, one of the most underappreciated parts of the movie is the fantastic soundtrack. Exclusive: Angelina Jolie says that roles such as her portrayal of Maria Callas — arguably the greatest prima donna assoluta soprano of all time — in director Pablo Larraín’s Maria, come along “once in a lifetime.”
The Academy Award-winning artist laughs, then adds, “I mean, it’s certainly the most challenging,” clearly referring to the seven months she spent learning six of the many dramatic arias most associated with Callas, who died of a heart attack at her Paris home on September 16, 1977. She was 53.
Larraín’s awards season movie, using a screenplay by Steven Knight, concerns itself with the coloratura soprano’s last days as she summons up memories of triumphs on the world’s most iconic opera stages and the realization that those artistic heights will not be achieved again, coupled with the tragedy of her love for shipping tycoon Aristotle Onassis.

How’s this for an epic cast list? Karim Aïnouz‘s “Rosebush Pruning” had enough hype surrounding it already: Elle Fanning as the star; Efthimis Filippou penning a script that adapts the 1965 classic “Fists In The Pocket“; Mubi, The Match Factory, and Fremantle‘s The Apartment footing the bill. But the ensemble Aïnouz cast around Fanning now makes his follow-up to “Motel Destino” one of next year’s most anticipated films.

To box the work of Sean Baker into a neat genre classification would be to miss what is so authentic and spontaneous about his unequivocally human and heartfelt storytelling. Of the same token, in elevating the narratives that exist on the margins of society to new, bold, cinematic heights, he allows many who’ve never been granted any importance to feel the only kind of value that being centered in a movie can offer. In this way, he’s using the various forms of cinema to expand the kind of stories the world is exposed to and with his latest, the Palme d’Or-winning “Anora,” does so in a way that draws on the magic of a fantasy romance, as well as the terror of a gangster thriller.
“I love tonal jumps. I love roller coasters,” Baker said in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly. “It is scary, though. It...
