    Red circle

Scotland Yard and a private detective team up to solve the mystery of the "Red Circle" - someone in a black hood is blackmailing people and killing them if they don't pay up, always leaving a calling card of a red circle, which is a sort of curse because a past family member was not properly killed by a guillotine. The ancestors now pay the red circle's price.

Typically atmospheric thriller set in London, and fairly compelling with a neat pace and a serpentine plot. The villain is quite a deviously cunning fellow, appearing like a spectre, using blackmail as a weapon - some krimi thrillers tend to be weighed down with slow spots and dialogue, but here everything is moving, flowing like fine wine. I particularly enjoyed this one. There some good characters like the one Renate Ewert plays- she's a shady one and beautiful, too. The twist is a great one, and built up really well.

An intriguing and overall enjoyable Krimi

After a series of murders, a detective is called in to investigate the crimes which are soon found to belong to a suspected criminal mastermind running wild in the city due to a hereditary birthmark that predisposes him to murder and tries to protect the remaining figures in their path.

This was a rather enjoyable Krimi with a lot to like about it. Among the best attributes to be found here is the immensely likable and enjoyable setup that provides quite a strong starting point for the activities within here. Not only is the main series of crimes rather intriguing, but the main killer getting a solid backstory to explain their motivations and rampage serves this one incredibly well by looking into the family ancestry to uncover the truth about the relatives' survival of the guillotine that accounts for their calling card pattern at each crime scene. By doing this, the idea of the blackmail and murder spree being used to seek revenge for these past activities is an intriguing touch that gives everything the kind of starting point to understand the history and motivation of everything. This serves to make the targets being selected undergo the kind of necessary panic and stress that devolves more clues about the rampage that hint at the severity of his intent as well as the intelligence and ruthlessness to pull off this plan that all make him a solid criminal figure. The other fun part here is the series of investigations that are used here to solve the case. Knowing the killer is using the special symbol on the letters for his targets, the investigation into the other factors they know about give this some energetic situations involving the recovery of the figures who are competent with specific knots, a look into the shady business of a bank manager to force out phony money distribution tactics, or the mysterious ability of the secretary to walk up to every crime scene that signals something odd going on with everything around her. This sets up some solid stalking scenes involving the killer obscured by the shadows to emerge out of the darkness and strike in some solid overall sequences including a car chase to get out of the city alive, a striking scene at a countryside estate where a victim is attacked with a bow and arrow, or a surprise ambush on a train fleeing the city that's immensely chilling and creepy trying to figure out where the killer is going to come from. There are some issues to be had with this one. The biggest issue here is the utterly convoluted and densely-plotted storyline that might manage to work nicely with the identity and personality of the killer yet makes for a rather twisted offering in most other regards. There's way too many characters involved here, especially on the police side with way too many figures on the case even though it's entirely expected to do so with the case being as baffling and intricate as it is, but that still manages to bring about too many figures trying to sort out the different aspects of the investigation. As several of them, normally the woman who keeps showing up in the various crime scenes looking shifty, the different inspectors playing with the case to uncover the allegiances of various suspects, and the outside forces that are dragged into the spree that are uncovered later on, make this one feel quite twisty and complex. That also makes this one somewhat sluggish and tough to get going during the first half, where the early stages manage to get off to a slow start before settling into a solid pace. Overall, these factors are enough to lower this one slightly.

    Good but unremarkable Wallace thriller

Another in the German Wallace cycle involving multiple murders and blackmail as the result of an execution that went wrong seven years earlier. Good but not great this film never really added up to much more than people moving around trying to figure out who the villain was and to stay far enough on his good side that they didn't end up dead. To be honest while it isn't a bad movie, its quite good, its very generic as these things go, blending so much into the mass of German Wallace films that I started to nod off towards the end. Its not the fault of the film entirely since I am under the weather, but at the same time I kind of allowed my self to drift because I sort of felt I knew where it was going. Worth a look on Late night TV or if you are in an undemanding mood.

    Good Edgar Wallace thriller

This is one of the early West German Edgar Wallace based thrillers. For some reason it doesn't get a lot of attention. That is too bad because this is a crackerjack thriller.

After narrowly avoiding the guillotine a master criminal returns to London and wreaks havoc.Blackmail and murder are the trademarks of the Crimson Circle.25 people will die in his (or her) spree.

A private investigator is called in to help Scotland Yard after 18 people fall prey to the Crimson Circle. Inspector Parr is deemed to be too old and behind the times to apprehend the murderer.Parr asks for and is granted special authority to carry out his plan. However it seemingly backfires in his face and 7 more people meet their grisly fate.

Involved is a neer do well, a young lady of villainous ways, suspicious police officials and a shady Frenchmen.Who is the Crimson Circle?

The plot is fast paced and there is plenty of action. The cast is up to the task and the vehicle is well directed.A nice little surprise awaits at the end. Well worth seeking out for an evening's entertainment.

    • Trivia
After the huge success ofLa grenouille attaque Scotland Yard (1959), which cost 600,000 DEM to make, Rialto Film was willing to put 1,000,000 DEM into this production. However, when the film was finished, the total budget used turned out to be almost exactly as high as the first film's,and approximately 400,000 DEM were left.
    • Goofs
A brave effort was made to make Copenhagen look like London by adding real London footage. However, as lady Doringham sits in her Jaguar, the steering wheel is on the left. She drives with the blackmailer in the backseat, they are definitely going NW on Copenhagen's Vester Voldgade. Also as Osborne steps out of his Morris Minor, he comes out of the left door.
    • Crazy credits
The names of the cast and crew, in the opening titles, are placed over a steel grid, as a nod to director Jürgen Roland, who had become famous through the TV series Stahlnetz (1958), which stands for steel grid in German.
