Tony Hancock’s feature film outings The Rebel and The Punch And Judy Man are getting fresh DVD and Blu-ray releases. More here.
It’s one of the most well known lines in comedy. Tony Hancock goes to give blood and, on being told he’ll be giving a pint, says the immortal words, “I don’t mind giving a reasonable amount, but a pint? That’s very nearly an armful!”.
The writers or those words and many more were Ray Galton and Alan Simpson, who went on to create the hugely successful sitcom Steptoe And Son too.
Hancock made only two forays into film, and they are both being rereleased on DVD and Blu-ray in March.
The first film was The Rebel. Directed by Robert Day, scripted by Galton and Simpson and released in 1961, the synopsis reads as follows:

You've probably never heard of The Rebel, but it's a TV series with some considerable influence. The Rebel was released at a time when the Western was one of the most prominent genres in film and television, from John Wayne's various exploits on screen to Clint Eastwood's iconic Dollars trilogy. It focuses on Johnny Yuma (Nick Adams), a former soldier in the Confederate army. Johnny feels lost after the end of the Civil War, and decides to seek inner peace by hunting down criminals across the West. This premise kept The Rebel going for two seasons, but it was cancelled before a third season could be greenlit and the reasoning for doing so was rather ludicrous. Here's the history of The Rebel and the circumstances that led to its cancellation.

General Hospital has been all over the place lately, but the latest move has some viewers outraged.
The storylines, cast changes, and other issues have put the ABC soap on thin ice with viewers, and it isn’t getting any better.
There had been rumblings that the writers were working on a pairing between Jason (Steve Burton) and Anna (Finola Hughes), but many didn’t think twice after reading the speculation.
However, that all changed when Thursday’s episode ended with Jason grabbing Anna for a kiss.
Immediately, social media lit up, and it wasn’t with praise.
Why would the writers think a Jason and Anna pairing, affair, or whatever they plan to do would work?

Since Thursday’s General Hospital aired, X has been on fire with comments and outrage over Jason and Anna kissing while imprisoned at Sidwell’s (Carlo Rota) compound.

Eric Linden defends the CGI in the Road House fights, explaining pre-vis splicing techniques for realism. Controversy was formed around CGI fight scenes in Road House, with critiques from John Wick's Scott Adkins. While some see CGI as detracting, the Corridor Crew praises it for unique realistic touch.
Road House's stuntman defends the CGI used in Jake Gyllenhaal's fights in the reboot. Starring Gyllenhaal and Conor McGregor, the Doug Liman-directed film is a remake of the 1989 movie of the same name. Road House was released on Prime Video this year and was met with high success in terms of viewership. Since then, the production of Road House 2 has been confirmed, though there are still a lot of details left up in the air in terms of casting and plot.
At the time of writing, Jake Gyllenhaal is the only actor confirmed to return in Road House 2.

Jake Gyllenhaal’s Road House remake has delivered an exceptional performance after its release on Amazon Prime. 'Swayze Didn’t Need It': John Wick Star Scott Adkins Criticizes Road House Remake’s CGI Fight Scenes
Scott Adkins criticizes CGI use in Road House remake fight scenes, praises McGregor's acting debut. New fight technique in remake replaces actors with 'pillows,' enhances the impact but is not well received by Adkins. Adkins acknowledges similar techniques used before, but thinks CGI should be used sparingly.

Road House stunt coordinator Garrett Warren came up with a clever means of making the remake’s fights look realistic without breaking any bones.
Whether or not you think it’s sacrilege to remake the 1989 cult favourite, Road House, it’s arguable that director Doug Liman directed his fight scenes with gleeful rawness – faces are pummelled, bodies are sent crashing through tables, and backsides are well and truly kicked.
It’s possible that Liman’s full-frontal method of shooting his hand-to-hand combat scenes may have left you wondering: how do you make it look as though UFC star Conor McGregor’s just punched Jake Gyllenhaal square in the face without landing the Hollywood star in hospital?
Shared on Twitter over the weekend, a brief clip shows off an intriguing method that stunt coordinator Garrett Warren came up with for the production – what he calls the ‘four-pass’ or ‘Abcd method’.

Scott Adkins critiques CGI fight scenes in Road House, comparing them unfavorably to Patrick Swayze's original version. Adkins acknowledges CGI can be effective when used sparingly, citing Johnny Nguyen's low-budget action film as an example. Despite his criticisms, Adkins still enjoyed Road House and praised the performances of Jake Gyllenhaal and Conor McGregor.
Scott Adkins has no love for the fight scenes in Road House. As an experienced action star, Adkins starred as Killa in John Wick: Chapter 4, and he has also appeared in Day Shift, Castle Falls, and American Assassin. He did not appear in Jake Gyllenhaal's latest movie, Road House. The remake is inspired by the 1989 movie and features Gyllenhaal's Dalton facing off against Conor McGregor's Knox.

Of all the current action stars, there’s likely no current draw with the expertise in fight scenes that Scott Adkins does. Not only has he starred in dozens of low-budget actioners (including the great Undisputed films), in addition to his roles in bigger films like John Wick: Chapter 4, but he also hosts an amazing YouTube show called The Art of Action, where he deconstructs fight scenes in classic movies alongside their original stars. This weekend, like many folks, Adkins decided to watch Prime Video’s Road House remake, and while he had high praise for the movie, he also criticized the use of CGI in the fight scenes.

We will probably never see a motion picture phenomenon like George Lucas' "Star Wars" ever again. The United States was still shaking off its Vietnam War hangover in the mid-1970s, and while the top filmmakers of the New Hollywood were mostly attracted to edgy material that explored its characters' damaged psyches, audiences were in the mood to escape. Steven Spielberg's "Jaws" offered emphatic proof of this mindset during the summer of 1975 when it briefly became the highest-grossing movie in U.S. box office history.
Lucas' space opera was an altogether different kind of sensation. The briskly paced yarn about a young farm boy who discovers he might be the galaxy's savior ignited the imaginations of kids the world over, and Lucas deepened the viewer's immersion by employing an array of pioneering special effects and wildly inventive creature/production designs. "Star Wars" was world-building on a scale that matched "The Wizard of Oz,...

Mark Goddard, the actor who made a lasting impression on young sci-fi fans as the daring, forever impatient Major Don West on CBS’ 1965-68 series Lost In Space, died of pulmonary fibrosis Tuesday in Hingham, Massachusetts. He was 87.
His death was announced by his wife Evelyn Pezzulich in a Facebook post.
“I’m so sorry to tell you that my wonderful husband passed away on October 10th,” Pezzulich wrote. “Several days after celebrating his 87th birthday, he was hospitalized with pneumonia. We were hopeful when he was transferred to a rehabilitation center, but then doctors discovered he was in the final stages of pulmonary fibrosis for which there is no cure.”
By the time he was cast in his breakthrough role as the headstrong Major West, Goddard had built a reputation as a rising young actor through supporting appearances in late-’50s fare such as Johnny Ringo and The Rebel.

The third feature directed by Vietnamese superstar Ngo Thanh Van — better known to western audiences as actor Veronica Ngo in “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” and “The Old Guard” — lives up to its title with a furious display of female revenge set in the seedy streets of late-’90s Ho Chi Minh City. Despite a routine plot and some abrasive tonal shifts, this tale of a motherly mentor turning three damaged young women into deadly assassins is packed with exciting action and boasts fine performances from four killers bound by blood, bullets and all manner of deadly weapons. Following a series of rowdy screenings in SXSW’s Midnighters section, “Furies” will stream worldwide as the first Vietnamese Netflix original feature on March 23.

1920s. Vietnam under colonial French ruling. Anti-French rebellions emerge all over the country to disrupt the foreign occupiers. In response, the colonialist employed units of Vietnamese agents to track and destroy these rebels.

Trinh (Veronica Ngo), a reluctant mercenary, is beholden to a crime lord who promises to release her kidnapped daughter only when she completes a series of missions. On what could be Trinh's final job, she meets and falls for Quan (Johnny Tri Nguyen) – whose hidden agenda could ruin the only chance she has of seeing her daughter again. Together with a motley crew of ass-kicking outcasts and no-goodniks, Trinh and Quan battle round after round against gangs and mafiosi… graduating each level like the progression of a video game. You may think you haven’t seen Veronica Ngo before, but you have, especially if your stream Netflix. Like her character Quynh, the immortal partner of Andy (Charlize Theron) in The Old Guard, she’s been all over. She was the radio propagandist Hanoi Hannah in Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods; she also played Tien, the Inferni Elf assassin pursuing Will Smith in Bright, as well as and the Kung Fu assassin Mantis in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny; her tour de force, Furie, is on Netflix too. Made in Vietnam, Furie was submitted to the Academy Awards as an International Feature Film entrée. Beyond Netflix, and in a galaxy far, far away, she played Paige Tico, the rebel martyr and Dreadnought bombardier who was the sister of Rose in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Let’s start with the premises of the Killer Camp. Don’t get killed and figure out the identity of the murderer. That’s it. Now, this being a reality show, there isn’t any real murders, that we know of, but the premise is a reality show shaped liked a horror film. The contestants, which we will get to in a second, are stuck at a summer camp with serial killer, Bruce, who is controlled by one of the contestants, “murdering” a person each episode. The remaining contestants must work together, while not trusting anyone, to figure out the identity of the true killer/saboteur of the camp.
Here’s the description from the series itself:
In typical reality show fashion, there will be camaraderie, sex appeal, and lots of backstabbing… only this time, literally. As the campers play games to earn cash during the day, each night one...

Men and women with “a particular set of skills” really need to learn to beef up the security around their family and loved ones! Authors and (especially) documentary filmmakers have long been fascinated (much as the general public) with the romances of the stars, namely what happens when the gods and goddesses of Hollywood, the modern Olympus, fall in love. Just a few weeks ago HBO premiered an excellent film on the life of actress Natalie Wood, with much of its running time devoted to her marriage(s) to “matinee idol’ Robert Wagner. Their coupling takes its place with other “tinsel town” teams like Bogie and Bacall, Gable and Lombard, and Taylor and Burton. The same holds true in the music industry, and in this new film’s case, the country music kings and queens with Johnny Cash and June Carter very near the top of the list. Their story has already inspired an Oscar-winning “bio-pic” from 2005 Walk The Line. But often in the rush to tell these tales, the former flames, and even future spouses are ignored.

A fascinating and affecting corrective counterpoint to the Johnny Cash mythos, “My Darling Vivian”
To be sure, director Matt Riddlehoover’s documentary often has the air of an authorized biography, in that it consists almost entirely of talking-heads testimonies by the couple’s four daughters, ranging in age from late 50s to mid-60s: singer-songwriter Rosanne Cash, Kathy Cash Tittle, Cindy Cash, Tara Cash Schwoebel. Tony Hancock’s two leading film roles are a reminder of the extremes of his comic genius. Paul Merton talks about the legacy of his hero – and how comedy is too coarse today
Seven years before his suicide, Tony Hancock tried to become a movie star. The Rebel (1961) is a comedy about a clerk who quits his job and moves to Paris to become an artist, despite his total lack of talent. Scripted by Half Hour creators Ray Galton and Alan Simpson, it was a deluxe bespoke vehicle, designed to take Hancock across the Atlantic and turn him into the new Peter Sellers.
Brits flocked. Homegrown critics raved. And Hollywood absolutely hated it.

New York, NY – Film at Lincoln Center and the New York Asian Film Foundation announce the 18th edition of the New York Asian Film Festival (Nyaff), June 28 – July 14, 2019.
After last year’s Savage Seventeen, this year’s program is dubbed the “Still Too Young to Die” edition with five international premieres, 23 North American premieres, four U.S. premieres, and eight New York premieres, showcasing the most exciting action, comedy, drama, thriller, romance, horror, and art-house films from East Asia, and bringing close to 30 directors and nine actors from Asia.
Eighteen – Still Too Young to Die: Many will recognize the cheeky reference to Nyaff 2016 audience award winner, Kudo Kankuro’s Too Young to Die!, in which a busload of high-school students plummet to their deaths. They either end up in heaven or hell, both of which defy expectations. Graduating into adulthood, Nyaff aims to defy expectations cinematically.

Furie came onto my radar because it’s a martial arts film starring Veronic Ngo. She’s been popping up in movies lately, most notably a small role in The Last Jedi and minor role in the head scratching sequel to Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. I, however, remember her from The Rebel, a 2007 martial arts film starring and action directed by Johnny Nguyen. You may remember him as the staircase boss from the infamous one take scene in Tony Jaa’s Tom Yum Goon. While it’s been awhile since I’ve seen The Rebel, I remember being pretty impressed with Veronica’s ability as a martial artist. Strangely though, more than 10 years later, I finally get to see her in another martial arts role that isn’t a throw...

It's been several years since the Vietnamese film industry had its moment as the next big thing in martial arts action. Back in the late '00s, led by incredible performer Johnny Tri Nguyen and director Charlie Nguyen, Vietnam was beginning to make a name for itself. Films like The Rebel and Clash were making the festival rounds and even getting picked up for overseas distribution thanks to high octane, inventive action sequences and gritty, real stories that connected with audiences much in the same way that late '80s-early '90s Hong Kong martial arts cinema did. Then, around 2013 with the banning of another Johnny Tri Nguyen/Charlie Nguyen collaboration, the politically charged Cho Lon, everything just kind of died. Cut to five years later and now...

Among the many sweeping divisions that separate the original Star Wars trilogy from the Prequels is in how “used” the films feel; or to put it another way, how the Prequels don’t. The franchise’s earlier installments have endured trends of computer graphics and frenetic editing across several generations in part because George Lucas leveraged a tight production budget with rusty edges and sputtering engines. The Millennium Falcon needs a few loving punches to fire up its nav-comptuer. The Rebel base on Hoth looks more like a rundown snow fort than an outpost fit for a princess. And the most powerful being in the galaxy might actually be a Grover-voiced frog puppet, rubber lips and all.
As covered in the first volume of this series, John Williams taps into the charm of used futurism with his music, doubling down on A New Hope‘s distressed and worn out compositions for its first sequel,...

Among the many sweeping dichotomies that separate the Star Wars Trilogy from the Prequels is how “used” the original films feel; or to phrase it another way, how the Prequels don’t. Part of the charm that’s allowed the franchise to persist for generations lies in how George Lucas leveraged a risky production budget with rusty edges and sputtering engines. The Millennium Falcon needs a few loving punches to fire up its nav-comptuer. The Rebel base on Hoth looks more like a rundown snow fort than an outpost fit for a princess. And the most powerful being in a galaxy far, far away might actually be a Grover-voiced frog puppet, rubber lips and all.
As already outlined in the first volume of this series, John Williams mirrors Star Wars’ “used future” masterfully in his music, doubling down on A New Hope‘s distressed and worn out compositions for its sequel.

George Lucas will always be known as the genius behind Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Darth Vader. But it was Irvin Kershner, a professorial and genteel man of the old school, who directed the film most Star Wars aficionados consider the greatest chapter in the saga, 1980′s The Empire Strikes Back. It was to Kershner’s credit that he never jockeyed for the limelight or clawed for the credit. He was a quiet craftsman who believed in letting the images he put on screen speak for him. The news that Kershner passed away earlier today leaves a giant black hole...

The Associated Press is reporting that Irvin Kershner, director of the critically-acclaimed sequel to Star Wars, has passed away in Los Angeles following a long illness. He was 87.
Born in Philadelphia, Pa in 1923, Kershner's first love was music. He studied the violin, viola, and composition at Philadelphia's Temple University. He later moved on to painting and then photography, where he attended the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles. Finally, Kershner began his film career at University of Southern California's acclaimed School of Cinematic Arts.

A: A really cool straight one.
“I didn't have any reservations about it being gay or what kind of character it was,” Gregory tells AfterElton.com. “Just, ‘It's another role – are you ready to do it?’ You look at everything. I just got back from the holidays [when I did it]. Did I eat too much? Am I going to look good? You look at those things, not, ‘Oh, I'm doing another gay role.’”
Gregory Michael
Interestingly, Gregory didn’t even consider the aspect of doing two prominent gay roles until his manager said to him, "You know you're doing another gay role.
