If you think it's high time that Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro joined fellow Mexican auteurs Alfonso Cuaron (Gravity) and Alejandro González Iñárritu (Birdman, The Revenant) in the Oscar winners circle, The Shape of Water just may be the movie to do it. The Academy typically turns up its nose at the fantasy/horror genre that attracts del Toro (see: Pan's Labyrinth, The Devil's Backbone, Hellboy). Not this time. His latest is a Cold War romance about a mute cleaning lady (Sally Hawkins) who falls hard for an amphibious creature...

Mubi is exclusively premiering online the new restorations of Hot Thrills and Warm Chills (1967) and The Nest of the Cuckoo Birds (1965) as part of the series ByNWR. I think it was Quentin Tarantino who said that the grindhouse enthusiast not only has to drink a lot of milk to get to the cream, they have to drink a lot of curdled milk. And I generally figured I would leave that to someone else because it didn't sound too appetizing. So I have to be grateful to Nicholas Winding Refn, a sturdier trashonaut than I, who has performed curatorial duties, rediscovering and restoring two prime examples of cultist cream, thick, clotted and soured and probably very bad for your figure. I shouldn't, I really shouldn't. But I'm going to.Hot Thrills and Warm Chills (1967) accompanies its nonsensical title with some really exciting Latin rhythms, credited to "Dario de Mexico" (who has...

According to new reports, the Fox stand-alone "Gambit" feature, produced by Lauren Shuler Donner, with the working title "Chess", showcasing "X-Men" mutant 'Remy Lebeau' (Channing Tatum) and the female super-villain 'Candra The Benefactress', aka 'Red Death', now has a brief synopsis:
"...'Remy Lebeau' (Tatum) is on trial in New Orleans. He’s considered a huge security risk. We flashback to almost 25 years before. Master thief 'Luke Lebeau' runs into eight-year-old 'Gambit' while doing a heist. Impressed by his skills, he offers to take the mutant orphan under his wings. Raised alongside other strays he calls 'cousins', the teenage Gambit becomes the superstar of the 'Thief Guild'.
"He encounters 'Bella Donna Boudreaux' while on the run from the police. Sparks immediately fly since Bella is also a fellow mutant.
"Their love is directly prohibited by both families since the Boudreaux family are sworn enemies of the Lebeau clan. Deciding to unite the two sides,...

It looks like Fox has found their new director for Channing Tatum's big screen adaptation of Marvel's Gambit. According to Deadline, the studio is currently making a deal with Gore Verbinski to direct the film.
Verbinski is best known for his work on The Ring, The Pirates of the Caribbean film, The Lone Ranger, A Cure For Wellness, and the Bioshock movie that he never got to make. He's a hit or miss director. I like some of the films that he's made. I do like his visual style of filmmaking, but sometimes his films just aren't good... I'm looking at you Lone Ranger.
That doesn't mean he's going to drop the ball on Gambit. I actually think Gambit will be a good film project for him that will align with his strengths as a filmmaker. I hope this works out because I kinda dig his style.

Channing Tatum's Gambit movie is still in development and everyone involved seems excited about the direction that they are looking to take it. You can thank Logan and Deadpool for opening certain doors to make sure this Gambit movie is going to be done right. I honestly think the film could end up being great, especially if they take in the direction that was previously rumored.
According to that rumor, Mr. Sinister is involved with the story they are going to tell and according to a report from Splash Report, the studio is looking at casting Daniel Craig in the role of the villain and if that's true, Craig would be awesome! He is a perfect fit!
If this is true it would reunite Craig and Tatum who worked together in Steven Soderberg's Lucky Logan, which was a fantastic film that you have to see if you haven't already.

From 007 to Fox’s X-Men universe?
Splash Report has unearthed a new rumor claiming Bond 25 actor Daniel Craig is circling the villain role in Gambit. He’s said to be up for the part of Mr. Sinister (real name: Nathaniel Essex) opposite Channing Tatum as the titular mutant, who goes by the name of Remy LeBeau when he’s not slinging cards around the joint.
Sinister, on the other hand, is a classic villain pulled from the X-Men archives. Sources close to Splash Report merely suggest that Fox is hosting “conversations” about possibly securing Daniel Craig to be Essex (Sinister) in Gambit as well as future X-Men movies. Remember, the studio recently staked out a total of six release dates for upcoming Marvel films, so there’s a very good chance it’s already reserved a slot for Gambit, even if the pic itself is a long way from the finish line.

The Gambit movie, despite a great many setbacks, is still reportedly in development at Fox. Channing Tatum is still attached and seems quite enthusiastic about it, but after director Doug Liman left, things changed quite a bit. They decided to take the project back to square one, which may not be a bad thing since the successes of Deadpool and Logan will allow for them to take more chances. With all of that said, some rumored plot details for the Gambit movie have arrived online and they are pretty insane.
Splash Report brings us these rumored plot details for the Gambit movie, which promises that the movie will essentially be Ocean's 11 within the X-Men universe. The plot also promises that fan-favorite villain Mr. Sinister will finally be making his big screen debut, assuming this plot does in any way resemble what we ultimately see when the movie eventually gets made.

As you all know, Channing Tatum's Gambit movie has gone through some hard times. It's been in development hell for awhile, but according to Tatum, it's all been for the better of the development of the film. The movie is now said to be inspired more by what Deadpool and Logan have done.
I've been curious to know what direction they are going to take the story and now we might have an idea of what is being planned for the film. Splash Page claims to have details on a plot outline for the film, and they describe it as "the Oceans 11 of the comic book genre". They also say that the movie will include mutants such as Rictor, Fifolet, Dani Moonstar, Multiple Man, Marrow, and a "blue X-Men regular", which could be Mystique, Beast, or Nightcrawler. Here's the plot summary that report shared:
Remy Lebeau (Channing Tatum) is on trial in New-Orleans.

Too often we hear of film projects falling apart when a director/star walks away or, in the more common scenario, a studio pulls the plug altogether. From Fantastic Four 2 to Sony’s fabled Sinister Six crossover, you don’t have to search too far to locate a big-name project that failed to get off the ground. Thankfully, Gambit isn’t one of them.
Yes, the X-Men spinoff has encountered one setback after another since it was first announced, but despite all those frustrating false starts, Channing Tatum remains attached to headline as the ice-cool Remy LeBeau. That’s the real name of the titular hero, a card-playing Cajun who hails from New Orleans. Originally portrayed by Taylor Kitsch in the widely derided X-Men Origins: Wolverine, the torch has since been passed over to Tatum, whose long-time affinity for the character stretches all the way back to childhood.

There;s nothing more fun than a well-executed crossover.
Using the parent show and a spinoff makes that task easier as was readily apparent on NCIS: New Orleans Season 3 Episode 14.
On NCIS Season 14 Episode 15, the original team solves the murder of Abby's friend while leaving the theft of a hypothetical terror playbook unresolved.
That leaves the door open for Gibbs to send McGee and Torres to New Orleans to help out. Very organic,
You think of Pride and the gang as kinda fast and loose when it comes to protocol.
But they haven't met someone such as Nick Torres, who is still trying to come to terms with the phrase "team player."
Shortly after landing in N'Awlins, he got arrested for murder. Even though Pride vouched for Torres, he wasn't happy.
Pride: You make quite a first impression, Nick Torres. Less than two hours in my city and you get arrested as a suspected murderer.

“You’re so right,” Cohen, 48, responded to talk show host Harry Connick Jr.‘s question about why the franchise hasn’t moved to New Orleans during an upcoming episode of Harry. “We look for cities with strong personalities and is there a city with a stronger personality than New Orleans? No!”
The best part? The Harry host offered to showcase his true self on the possible reality show.

Exclusive: Drew and Jonathan Scott Take Over New Orleans in a Heated Battle of the Property Brothers
On a sweltering Friday in early September, Jonathan and Drew Scott are showing no signs of New Orleans’ late summer heat -- 95 degrees by early afternoon -- as they film their new series, Brothers Take New Orleans. The two “Property Brothers” are with their third sibling, J.D., and Hoda Kotb at the Court of Two Sisters in the heart of the city’s French Quarter discussing that week’s results of their latest challenge: remodeling a duplex destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.
The show, which premieres Wednesday, Nov. 23 at 9 p.m. Et, is the latest spin-off of the Scott brothers’ successful Property Brothers franchise, which includes Buying and Selling, Brother vs. Brother, Property Brothers: At Home and Property Brothers: At Home on the Ranch.

This is a weekend up ups and downs. Grosses compared to last year are up, and a sleeper success repeated at #1 with Tyler Perry’s return to form, “Boo! A Madea Halloween” (Lionsgate).
Surprisingly, the week brought for the first time in a long while a limited release Indian film. Fox’s production of “Ai Dil Hai Mushkil” took in over $2.1 million in only 307 theaters. Meantime, in only 36 theaters the year’s best-reviewed movie “Moonlight” grossed $900,000.
The next few weeks are among the most crucial of the year, with some hope that fortunes might be improving.
The Top Ten

Tom Cruise brings back his military action character Jack Reacher in Jack Reacher: Never Go Back. With Edward Zwick directing, Cruise delivers his signature brand of action with little touches of humor and romance, in this second movie in what appears to be a franchise based on Lee Child’s action thriller books. Cruise’s return as Reacher should please his loyal fans, although other moviegoers will find little that stands out in this standard action film.
One thing that does offer a bit of fun is the movie’s setting, which is in New Orleans during Halloween instead of Mardi Gras and, in earlier scenes, in the little-seen side streets of Washington, D.C. away from the iconic Capitol buildings.

Jaden Smith tried his best to beat the heat when he made a practically shirtless outing with his girlfriend, Sarah Snyder, in NYC on Sunday. After joining Justin Bieber on stage during his Purpose tour at Madison Square Garden earlier this week, Jada and Will's famous son showed off his abs as he hit the town in an unbuttoned shirt with black pants, a yellow cap, and Mardi Gras beads. The outing is just the latest we've seen of Jaden in recent months. Not only did he jet off to France with his dad for the Cannes Lions Festival, but he also gave us sibling goals when he hit up the Met Gala with little sister Willow. If you can't get enough of Jaden, be sure to check out some of his most outrageous tweets.

I’m not a typical film critic; in fact, I’m not a film critic at all. I’m a sociologist that studies fear with a fondness for horror films. What I love to talk about is the ways in which horror movies, in this case The Purge: Election Year, hold a mirror up to society, reflecting both our fears and our secret (or not so secret) desires.
There is no guesswork required in Election Year; this is no funhouse mirror, but rather a pretty direct reflection of where we are today. Election Year picks up where Anarchy left off, with growing opposition to the Purge: on the pro-Purge side we have a Christian minister backed by the New Founding Fathers (and a super creepy bishop), and on the other side a career politician (who happens to be female, white, and blonde) that wants the Purge gone for good...

Tony Warren 8th July 1936-1st March 2016
'The first Coronation Street writing team contained some of the biggest homophobes I've ever met. I remember getting on my feet in a story conference and saying "Gentlemen, I have sat here for two-and-a-half hours and listened to three poof jokes, a storyline dismissed as poofy, and an actor described as 'useless as he's a poof'. As a matter of fact he isn't! but I would like to point out that I am, and without a poof none of you would be in work today." So reflected the writer & television dramatist Tony Warren on his early uphill, but routine struggle with homophobia of late 1950s Britain. It was a brave and brazen stance given that homosexuality was still illegal. He also stated later that "the outsider sees more, hears more, and has to remember more to survive" and that in those days if...

Being that Terrence Malick isn’t necessarily available for the career-spanning interview — or even a soundbite — the next best thing for learning more about his creative process comes from those that work closest with him in development: the producers. Before his Christian Bale-led drama Knight of Cups enters a limited release this Friday, I had the chance to speak with Sarah Green, Nicolas Gonda, and Ken Kao
While Green has worked with Malick since 2005’s The New World and Gonda came onboard with The Tree of Life, Knight of Cups marks the first collaboration with Kao, who has also executive-produced this year’s The Nice Guys and Silence. It was a delight to discuss their first experiences seeing a film from Malick, his creative process, what’s in store for the upcoming, Austin-set Weightless, witnessing the collaboration between Malick, Emmanuel Lubezki, and Jack Fisk, and more. Check out the full conversation below.

While Carol, Freeheld and The Danish Girl have won broad success, Sydney’s upcoming Mardi Gras film festival offers a less limited view of gender and sexuality
As Carol, Cate Blanchett drinks in Rooney Mara, a young girl working in a department store. As the New Jersey police detective Laurel Hester, Julianne Moore is smitten with Ellen Page. As Australian playwright Tim Conigrave, Ryan Corr holds his man from the age of 16 until the end of their too short lives. And, as Danish artist Einar Wegener, who becomes Lili Elbe, Eddie Redmayne resurrects a pioneering transgender journey.
Released over the past year, these four films – Carol, Freeheld, Holding the Man and The Danish Girl – have done an excellent job of elucidating sexuality and gender experiences that exist outside the “norm”. What’s more, Blanchett, Mara and Redmayne are all up for Oscars: what validation for queers like me. We exist!
