The chair was animated by attaching strings to it, similar to the technique used with marionettes, though the strings were tied horizontally. The filmmakers used fine black nylon fishing string, which was invisible to the camera.
The music was performed by sitarist Ravi Shankar and tabla player Chatur Lal. They happened to be in Montreal for a TV recital, and filmmaker Norman McLaren screened the film for the duo. Shankar and Lal agreed to provide the soundtrack.
