While each actor to appear on Doctor Who has a memorable experience, each has gone on to other roles after portraying the famous Time Lord. For any actor who steps into the shoes of the Doctor, it tends to be a life-changing and career-changing experience. Especially when portraying a role that’s been filled by so many others that it has become a pop-culture icon, playing the Doctor always leaves an impact on their actors and often becomes one of the roles they are most known for. With fears our winter travel will need a, let’s say, reconsideration, the Criterion Channel’s monthly programming could hardly come at a better moment. High on list of highlights is Louis Feuillade’s delightful Les Vampires, which I suggest soundtracking to Coil, instrumental Nine Inch Nails, and Jóhann Jóhannson’s Mandy score. Notable too is a Sundance ’92 retrospective running the gamut from Paul Schrader to Derek Jarman to Jean-Pierre Gorin, and I’m especially excited for their look at one of America’s greatest actors, Sterling Hayden.

Special notice to Criterion editions of The Killing, The Last Days of Disco, All About Eve, and The Asphalt Jungle, and programming of Ognjen Glavonić’s The Load, among the better debuts in recent years.

A key title in the development of the Film Noir, 1957’s Crime of Passion shows how much the style had departed from the dark romanticism and expressive visuals of the previous decade. The best mid-’50s noirs strike a marvelously cynical and existentially bleak attitude regarding crime and society.

It's a massacre of available older streaming titles this month although there aren't very many major titles among them. [Disclaimer: Netflix hasn't announced yet so all of these titles are Amazon Prime but bear in mind that the Amazon Prime titles are not "official". They don't ever publish that list much to the frustration of their customers! So this info gathered from users about expiration notices they've seen on their personal watch lists. My god Barbara Stanwyck's voice. It gets me every time. Everything sounds so subliminally erotic. In this one she's married to a detective but bored into ambitious dangerous action.

Robert Wagner as a social climbing psycho killer? I knew it! 'Mr. CinemaScope Smile' grins only once or twice in this movie, and then only to fool an unsuspecting woman. A great cast brings tension to Ira Levin's outrageous tale of murder. Joanne Woodward has a powerful role, but my heartthrob this time out is lovely Virginia Leith. Brian De Palma, as announced earlier this year , is planning to make his next feature a remake of the recent French film, Crime d'Amour (which translates to "Crime of Passion"). Indiewire now has an update, suggesting that De Palma already has his sights set on his leads: Rachel McAdams and Noomi Rapace, both of whom star in this week's Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows . The original film (the very last from recently-deceased director Alain Corneau) starred Kristin Scott Thomas as an executive mentoring a young ingénue (Ludivine Saginer) who soon becomes her cutthroat rival. The late Robert Quarry was one of the last remaining horror “stars” – a category of actor that has seemed to disappear in modern cinema. Quarry’s career stretched back to the 1940s with bit parts in films before he formed a theatrical group when joining the army. Following World War II, Quarry won a contract with Rko, and then later with MGM. He appeared in a number of films at MGM including “A Kiss Before Dying” (1956) and “Crime of Passion” (1957). Quarry’s claim to fame was not to come with MGM but later in his career when he took on the role of a modern day vampire in “Count Yorga, Vampire” (1970).
