    Ages Well

This is still (in the 21st Century) a pretty good thriller. Maharis and Basehart are top-notch, plus Ann and Dana are very good. The plot is still very topical (as in Weapons of Mass Destruction). Would be a good remake candidate.

    excellent 60's glossy thriller

The first half of this movie is really great. The mood is ominous and intercuts between the good and bad guys in a way that keeps us just slightly ahead of the characters in the movie if we watch closely.

The production is not quite top-drawer, but the sets and locations are attractive and interesting, and the main cast members are solid. (I have fond memories of Anne Francis as a kid, and she still looks good to me. Maharis is cool and clever, and Basehart actually does a solid job. The sad thing is that Dana Andrews, who was a really first-class talent in his younger days, just walks through this picture; fortunately he's not onscreen very much.) The tension isn't maintained through the entire movie, but the pacing is. The showdown at the end is pretty weak.

Not a bad way to spend a Saturday afternoon. The laser disc version that I just saw was very clean.

Another Fine Movie that should be on DVD

About Five years before the ANDROMEDA STRAIN, came THE Satan BUG, a Biological thriller with a stellar cast and background music that set the mood for a tense, exciting almost end of the world movie that I also HOPE gets its reward to remastered to DVD so others may enjoy this Classic from 1965. The cast is excellent with George Maharis, Richard Basehart, Anne Francis and Dana Andrews -this thriller is non stop action and suspense and MGM just Has to release it on DVD! Its a Movie I have watched many many times and shared it with friends whom also found it to be one of those " unheard of gems" and I hope more people will catch it and maybe, just maybe MGM will finally put this beaity to DVD with lots of Extras and maybe even a 5.1 Surround sound mode! If anyone knows if this is out anywhere in DVD or plans to put it to DVD I would love to know!

    Best,

This was made in the 60's!!!

A great Sci-Fi movie with twists and plot changes from the beginning.I find it hard to believe that this movie was made in the 60's with it's timely topic. If you like the old-school(Fantastic Voyage,The Andromeda Strain)Sci-Fi thriller this movie won't let you down. The cast of this film are the top of their game from the start. I think the director did a excellent job in casting and presenting the plot, Never read the book but after watching the movie and reading other comments I just might. After watching the movie you may find yourself wondering if this was a topic in the 60's what other things could have gone wrong during this time period.

    a wonderful little picture

This movie was a little film when it was released. No big stars but many familiar character actors in this simple movie about a maniac who has stolen a dangerous germ from a US government lab. The maniac is now threatening to release this pathogen and he must be found and stopped before all life on the planet is obliterated.

It's a simple enough plot but it is carried off so well. It's an intelligent movie that will appeal to someone who wants something different as well as a movie that doesn't insult your intelligence.

A somewhat similar and equally engaging film is The Andromeda Strain. Both are well worth your time.

Lee Remick: In the scene in the jazz club where Lee Barrett is introduced, the waitress that tells him he has a phone call, in an uncredited role.
    • Goofs
When Barrett enters the vault, he dials the top combination lock. The door has two locks requiring a second combination (held by another person) to open. This is common in high security zones to prevent a lone individual accessing a secure area.
    • Quotes

Dr. Gregor Hoffman: More than forty chemical weapons are being developed at Station 3. I will confine myself to two which we have developed here, at E Lab. The first, botulinus. We have twelve hundred grammes in six flasks. If ten grammes of it were allowed to contaminate a city, that city is a morgue in four hours. It is an ideal weapon, if you will forgive the phrase, because it only destroys people. It oxides itself, and in effect dies after eight hours.

Lee Barrett: Well, then it's safe to go in there. It's been over eight hours since that vault door was closed. And if all twelve hundred grammes of botulinus were spilled, it would still be safe. The closed-air circulation system is still in operation, so it would be oxidised.

Dr. Gregor Hoffman: That is correct, but there is something else in there. It is only three weeks since Dr. Baxter refined it, and only three days since he communicated its existence to anyone.

Gen. Williams: There's something beyond botulinis?

Dr. Gregor Hoffman: Yes, the second weapon. Also a virus, airborne. But self-perpetuating. Indestructible. Once released it will multiply at a power beyond our calculations. It perhaps will never die. To this virus we have given a highly unscientific name, but one which describes it perfectly. "The Satan Bug." If I took the flask which contains it and exposed it to the air, everyone here would be dead in three seconds. California would be a tomb in a few hours. In a week all life, and I mean all life, would cease in the United States. In two months, two months at the most, the trapper from Alaska, the peasant from the Yangtze, the Aborigine from Australia are dead. All dead, because I crushed a flask and exposed a green colored liquid to the air. Nothing, nothing can stop the Satan Bug.

Lee Barrett: What would be the last to go?

Dr. Gregor Hoffman: Perhaps the Great Albatross swinging its way around the bottom of the world. Perhaps an Eskimo deep in the Arctic. But the seas travel the world over, and so do the winds. One day, one day soon, they too would die. The Satan Bug is behind that door! One flask. It has got to be locked up in there, it has got to be! I must make you understand, if botulinus has been spilled then, as Mr. Barrett here says, it does not matter. But by god, if someone were to get in there and the Satan Bug has been spilled and the vault door were opened more than half an inch and left open, then the airlock room is lethal! Open this door for more than five seconds, and everything that I have told you will happen will happen. I beg you sir, seal up the door! You cannot take the risk!
