Exclusive: Callan Farris and Arjun Shah have joined the CBS multi-cam comedy pilot Zarna, alongside lead Zarna Garg, who co-writes and co-executive produces with Darlene Hunt.
Zarna centers on the eponymous heroine Zarna (Garg), a proud immigrant woman raising her American-born kids on Indian values. But now that they’re getting older, it’s time to focus on her American dream.
The story reflects Garg’s own story as an immigrant from India who moves to the U.S. as a teenager. After getting BA and Jd degrees, she spent 16 years as a stay-at-home mom before her children encouraged her to try stand-up, launching her comedy career.
The project also stars Rizwan Manji as Kishore, a successful Wall Street investor and Zarna’s husband of more than 20 years and Chandni Shah as Asha, a freshman at Columbia University and...

Most depictions of the Peanuts franchise focus on a few key notes. Charlie Brown and Snoopy appear other gang members take part in a beloved running gag, and a holiday or two is usually involved. In the comic strip, they often have adventures in the snow, suffer in their classrooms, or play baseball while rain pours down from above. While creator Charles M. Schulz was a genius cartoonist, 50 years of working on the same strip meant that he always needed to remain able to fall back on what worked. Character dynamics and continued gags were at the root of that.

Quick Links Why Are Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. Here? The Marvel Cinematic Universe Can Do What the Comics Never Could Marvel Has Bought Into the Negative Hype (And That's Concerning)
Both Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans are returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe after they seemingly took their final bows in Avengers: Endgame, but I'm not as excited. To quote Charlie Brown in A Charlie Brown Christmas, "I don't feel the way I'm supposed to feel." I know both Downey Jr. and Chris Evans are great actors, and I loved their previous forays into the MCU. Yet I'm less excited at the prospect of Captain America returning than I would be if they announced who was on the team. No, my problem is less with the actors themselves returning and more with what it means for the MCU as a whole because it points to a troubling sign.

Let's be honest, Christmas music is pretty polarizing, especially when you get bombarded with it in every store and commercial from October on. That goes doubly so for any of us who have actually worked holiday retail; I know I still have "Little Drummer Boy" nightmares on occasion. Yet there is one album that will make me boogie with Christmas joy when I hear it, no matter where I am, and it's the soundtrack to A Charlie Brown Christmas, because the Vince Guaraldi Trio is the real reason for the season.
The Peanuts Christmas special first aired on CBS in 1965, and it has its own merits as a Christmas special, but it's the music that brings it to life and made it a holiday mainstay that has endured almost sixty years of annual rebroadcasting. Vince Guaraldi and his band took something that was good and made it into something incredible,...

If you're looking for a movie to watch that is guaranteed to make you truly feel something, you can do worse than watching one of the films set to leave Netflix in less than a month. The holiday season is the perfect time of year for movie watching, especially fun, heartwarming films that the whole family can enjoy. Christmas classics like Home Alone, Elf, A Charlie Brown Christmas, and Die Hard are sure to entertain even the most frozen of hearts during the winter season.
Not every film watched over the holidays has to be a masterpiece, though, and even the ones that end up falling a bit short are perfect for the time of year with family and friends, particularly when it's one that's guaranteed to unite the family and inspire hours of discussion. After all, what is cinema without the conversations afterward about the best moments, weird mistakes,...

For many, Christmas is a time for both celebration and reflection. After 350+ days of the rat race of life, it's a time to spend with loved ones and hyper-focus on what's important in preparation for the year ahead. Movies are an essential part of the holiday season, and though there are countless Christmas movies in existence, (some of them deeply awful), some become classics for a reason. The following discusses Christmas movies that are not only festive and affecting, but genuinely great, damn near-perfect works of cinematic craft. This list does not include essential TV specials A Charlie Brown Christmas or How the Grinch Stole Christmas!. Obviously, you should watch those, too.

This 2024 Holiday season, Netflix has boldly asked the question: What if Christmas was hot?
Every November and December sees the streamer provide audiences with plenty of Yuletide seasonal movies, often resembling the type of corny, predictable, low-budget yet undeniably soothing made-for-tv works that Hallmark and other cable TV competitors push out during the tail end of the year. There’s plenty of that this year, most notably Lindsay Lohan’s “Our Little Secret,” about a couple who break up only to reunite during a Christmas holiday when they discover their new partners are siblings.
But this year, the company has put a bit of spice in the egg nog, so to speak, with “Hot Frosty” and “The Merry Gentlemen” two movies that…also pretty neatly fit into the Hallmark and Lifetime Christmas movie formula, down to featuring the type of early 2000s teen film star that often headline this genre.

The man behind some of the most colorful and whimsical movies of the 21st century has picked out his favorite Christmas movie of all time, and -- surprise, surprise -- it's one of the best Technicolor films (and MGM musicals) of the 20th century. Wes Anderson was surveyed by the British Film Institute this week alongside filmmakers like Luca Guadagnino, Alice Rohrwacher, and Guillermo del Toro, with all of them picking their single most-loved holiday season movie.
The list includes popular favorites like "It's A Wonderful Life" and "A Charlie Brown Christmas" alongside more unexpected picks, like "The Godfather Part III" and the '60s neo-noir "Blast of Silence." Anderson, however, went with "Meet Me in St. Louis," which he calls his "favorite musical ever made." The 1944 Vincente Minnelli film pulled from a series of short stories to bring us a portrait of the Missourian Smith family, specifically spotlighting a...

It's the holiday season, which, for fans of Peanuts, means it's the time to revisit A Charlie Brown Christmas. While the beloved special is not airing on broadcast television, it will be free to watch on streaming this week.
Apple TV+, the streaming platform that holds the streaming rights for A Charlie Brown Christmas and other classic Peanuts specials, will offer the classic program for free to everyone this weekend. On Saturday, Dec. 14, A Charlie Brown Christmas will start streaming on Apple TV+ with no subscription required to watch the special. It will also be available to stream the next day on Sunday, Dec. 15, before it then goes back to becoming an exclusive for Apple TV+ subscribers. Making the special available to stream for free for a limited time is Apple's way of replicating how Peanuts holiday specials would previously be aired on television every year.

Christmas specials are normally a time for TV shows to spread some holiday cheer, although some festive episodes have leaned into the darkest sides of the season. While beloved classics like A Charlie Brown Christmas have become annual viewing for families around the world, other viewers would much rather watch a Christmas special that doesn’t shy away from the challenges of the holidays. While it can sometimes be jarring to watch a particularly dark Christmas special, it’s also important that TV shows don’t lose their individuality just because Christmas is considered a time of joy and togetherness.
Many of the greatest Christmas specials of all time address dark subject matters and aren’t afraid to tackle terrifying themes or produce stories of sad sentimentality. Ever since the first Peanuts special, A Charlie Brown Christmas, debuted in 1965, Charlie Brown and his friends have been a television mainstay, with over 40 specials and counting. Some, like 1981's Someday You'll Find Her, Charlie Brown and I Want a Dog for Christmas, and Charlie Brown from 2003, are lower lights, while others like Charlie Brown's All-Stars, and It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, both from 1966, are much stronger entries. But it's a recent entry in the collection of Peanuts TV specials that has emerged as the best of the lot - and Charlie Brown plays second fiddle.

More than any other holiday, the Christmas season comes fully equipped with movies that you might end up watching whether you want to or not. Holiday marathons set up camp on several TV channels for most of December, and if your Christmas-celebrating family isn't throwing on a virtual yule log during group celebrations, there's a good chance they've got "Home Alone" or "A Christmas Story" on in the background of festivities. Plenty of Christmas movies aren't actually that great, but they have a way of needling their way into the fabric of the holiday season and becoming part of an unshakeable tradition. Others are true masterpieces, capable of catching us off guard and cracking open our hearts.
It's worth noting that some of the best on-screen Christmas stories ever made don't make the cut here because they don't actually reach feature film length. Classics like 1965's "A Charlie Brown Christmas,...

A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving benefits from a comparative lack of competition when it comes to holiday specials. There simply aren't as many beloved Thanksgiving specials as there are for Halloween and Christmas. While the classic Peanuts specials of those holidays have to stand out amid a series of rivals, the Thanksgiving version has a much less crowded field. That helped it finalize a rump trilogy of Peanuts holiday classics, while adding the 10th of what became a whopping 51 TV specials featuring Charles M. Schultz's beloved characters.
A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving also carries a singular distinction: it was the first Peanuts special written for the screen, without being based on any of Schultz's earlier comic strips. It was a step outside the franchise's comfort zone, though it didn't stray too far, as Schultz still wrote the screenplay. All the same, it acknowledged for the first time that Charlie Brown and...

Few coming-of-age films approach the cult appeal of The Goonies. Spielberg's 1985 classic was so popular that fans are still clamoring to see its long-gestating sequel released.

The wizards behind several of this year’s biggest animated films that are jockeying for awards consideration sat down recently with Gold Derby. Christmas just doesn’t feel the same now that none of us will be forced to watch the most unhinged holiday special ever to air thousands of times.
Millennials and Gen Xers will likely agree that, for all the benefits that the age of streaming has brought to our lives, both during the holiday season and year-round, kids these days are missing out on the simple pleasures of flipping through the channels during late fall to early winter in search of a holiday-themed episode of one of their favorite cartoons, only to settle for whatever colorful festive fair was available. And, since kids’ channels couldn’t simply air Frosty the Snowman, A Charlie Brown Christmas and The Fairly OddParents Christmas special on repeat 24/7 between Halloween and Christmas, the networks, too, had to settle for some second, third and fourth choices for festive programming.

If there’s one thing the world needs, it’s yet another Christmas movie. That probably sounds sarcastic, but I mean it. The endless deluge of Christmas films, year after year, has watered the holiday down into a genial but middling medley of cozy trappings and tropes. The Hallmark Channel bears a lot of the blame for this, pumping out hundreds of blandly reassuring holiday films in rapid succession, all with the same four or five plots and (slightly) different casting.
Ironically, this overwhelming wave of (hopefully) well-intentioned Christmas movies has led to a situation not unlike the one found in “A Charlie Brown Christmas Special.” This holiday has been overly commercialized for so long now that it’s hard to remember it any other way, and the actual message of the season has been lost in the flood of corporate cash-ins.

This year, AppleTV+ will allow customers and non-subscribers alike the brief opportunity to stream It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving and A Charlie Brown Christmas for free, no strings attached. I guess they didn’t get the memo that what we really wanted was real estate.
On December 9, 1965, CBS aired the first-ever animated television special adaptation of Charles Schulz’ beloved comic strip Peanuts, a quick, festive, 25-minute holiday story called A Charlie Brown Christmas. Written by Schulz, directed by Disney and Warner Bros. animation veteran Bill Melendez and commissioned and sponsored by the Coca-Cola Company, A Charlie Brown Christmas was a labor of both love and tight deadlines as Schultz and Melendez scrambled to deliver their corporate masters a passable product to which they could hitch some custom-made Coca-Cola advertisements.

The 1960s saw Peanuts evolve, as its iconic characters grew into their most familiar looks, while new characters appeared, and existing members of the gang gained more prominence. These ten strips from April 1964 exemplify the decade for Charles Schulz' masterpiece, containing everything that makes the cartoon enduringly popular to this day. No matter how far removed from their original publication, Peanuts cartoons have an uncanny ability to still elicit smiles from readers of any generation.
Peanuts arguably enjoyed its height of popularity in the 1960s, a decade which featured the debut of the comic's first television special, A Charlie Brown Christmas. The special became an instant holiday classic, and helped cement the enduring pop culture legacy of creator Charles Schulz' work. With the strips published in April, 1964 having very recently celebrated their 60th anniversary, they continue to make audiences laugh.

Plot: Franklin Anderson struggles to make new friends when he moves to a new state (possibly Minneapolis). However, after meeting Charlie Brown and entering a soap box derby race, Franklin learns valuable lessons about friendship and how winning isn’t everything.
Review: Moving to a new town is especially difficult when you’re a kid. In addition to being a social disadvantage in a school setting, your after-school playtime quickly becomes an exercise in manifesting imaginary friends. For Franklin Anderson, being popular was never an option. His dad moves around a lot, so Franklin jumps from one state to the next, living out of a suitcase and never settling in one place long enough to make honest-to-goodness friends. This pattern is about to change when he meets the Peanuts gang and learns that the traditional methods of making friends sometimes don’t apply.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas — except on subscription streaming, where you still can’t find classic Rankin/Bass holiday specials like “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.”
“Rudolph,” the 1964 Animagic stop-motion TV special was produced by Videocraft International — later renamed Rankin/Bass — for broadcast network NBC and sponsor General Electric. Five years later, Rankin/Bass Productions, now actually named Rankin/Bass Productions after Videocraft founders Arthur Rankin Jr. and Jules Bass, made the animated “Frosty the Snowman” special for broadcast network CBS.
In 1972 “Rudolph” joined “Frosty” at CBS, where they have remained for more than 50 years. In recent times, “Rudolph” and “Frosty” have also been a part of the Disney-owned cable channel Freeform’s “25 Days of Christmas” marathons. Though they run simultaneously, broadcast and cable are contractually considered different “windows” here, several sources with knowledge of the deals told IndieWire. The Rankin/Bass specials are also available on DVD and Blu-ray.

There is one undeniable truth: Christmas holiday fare is a dime a dozen. Specialty channels like Hallmark literally air Christmas movies in July, and amp up the output as the season draws nearer, with such titles as Catch Me If You Claus and five - yes, five - "Time For" movies: Time for Me/You/Us/Them/Him to Come Home for Christmas. TV series air their obligatory Christmas-themed episodes, with The Big Bang Theory's "The Bath Item Gift Hypothesis" or Friends' "The One With the Holiday Armadillo" among the all-time best, and then there are the standards, like A Charlie Brown Christmas. A trip to the movie theater this year offers everything from the heart-warming ensemble film Holiday Twist to the heart-stabbing It's a Wonderful Knife. Heck, even Batman is in on the merriment this year. What also is undeniably true is that only a handful become legitimate holiday classics,...

Animation and the holiday season have gone hand in hand throughout film history to create some of the most iconic and memorable films and characters, becoming synonymous with the holidays themselves. Films like How the Grinch Stole Christmas, A Charlie Brown Christmas, and The Nightmare Before Christmas have become all-time classics that fans watch year after year to get into the holiday spirit. However, numerous other outstanding Yuletide animated films have been overlooked in favor of these classics and deserve their own time in the spotlight.

Christmas is defined by a multitude of old family traditions — like making egg nog, matching ugly sweaters with loved ones, and decorating the Christmas tree. Add a great Christmas movie night to it, right next to your loved ones, and there’s probably no other activity in the world more beautiful to curl up to. While a few of us appreciate a good new holiday film like this year’s “Candy Cane Lane,” revisiting a few oldies is never a bad idea.

"Tis the season..." is often used as a salutation, an introductory phrase that announces the arrival of Christmas merriment and any litany of festive, yuletide holiday traditions. One such holiday tradition that many people like to partake in is the viewing of seasonal movies. While there are many Christmas and holiday movies where the season itself is a focal point, some "Christmas" movies actually aren't about the holiday at all — but if their stories take place during the holiday season, they may still be classified as a Christmas classic.
Some of these non-straightforward Christmas movies are chock-full of action, as opposed to all jolly celebrations and holiday cheer. Christmas action movies are extremely popular, with some fans likely believing they require annual viewing season after season alongside traditional holiday flicks like Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer, A Christmas Story, A Charlie Brown Christmas, or any similar offerings. Family Switch is a holiday film directed by McG, featuring a star-studded cast including Jennifer Garner and Rita Moreno. The movie revolves around a family that swaps bodies due to a strange occurrence, forcing them to experience each other's lives. The film aims to capture the spirit of Christmas classics and offers funny and memorable scenes, particularly between Jennifer Garner and Emma Myers.
Family Switch follows the Walkers, an average American nuclear family with two teenage children who have been butting heads with their parents. When a strange occurrence at the Griffith Park Planetarium causes the family to swap bodies with one another, they are all forced to walk a mile in each other's shoes. Rockin’ around the Christmas tree at the Christmas movie stop! That’s right: You’ve reached the North Pole of movie recommendations, where our toymakers (read: film critics) have been hard at work sifting through titles all year long.
It’s easy to think of holiday movies as the one area of cinema audiences have permission to practically forget about the rest of the year. With a limited window between Thanksgiving and Christmas, most film lovers can only make time for a handful of seasonally appropriate screenings before New Year’s snaps our attention back to awards season and the big Best Picture contenders. Plus, with new yuletide offerings hitting theaters and streaming platforms in a steady flurry throughout December, there’s only so much time to enjoy Christmas classics while staying current on new holiday fare.
Selection is made even more complex when you get into the Christmas genre’s inexplicable tendency toward gatekeeping.

There are three types of people in the world: "Garfield" people, "Calvin and Hobbes" people, and "Peanuts" people. As a practicing worshipper of The Great Pumpkin and the human result of what happens when Lucy van Pelt and Peppermint Patty go through the Brundlefly machine, I am firmly in the latter camp. There's no such thing as a bad "Peanuts" movie, in my opinion, only films that are special to a smaller number of fans.
The characters created by Charles M. Schulz have been entertaining generations for over 75 years, and there's no sign of stopping. Apple won the rights to much of the "Peanuts" library in the streaming wars, releasing the hybrid "Peanuts" special/Schulz documentary "Who Are You, Charlie Brown?" as well as two series, "Snoopy in Space" and "The Snoopy Show." Now, Apple TV+ is developing its first "Peanuts" original feature, bringing Charlie Brown and the gang to the Big City.

A new piece of Peanuts fan art imagines Charlie Brown with a full head of hair, sparking debate as to the meaning behind the curly line on his forehead.
An image posted on Twitter shows Charlie Brown in profile, sporting light blond hair with a wavy curl on the forehead. The artist, who goes by Alex, did not intend this hairdo to be a radical new look for the character, but rather an interpretation of the curly line the cartoon's creator, Charles M. Schulz, drew on his head. It has mostly been interpreted as a single strand of hair, although it can be seen as an implication of more going on. While the new artwork had some detractors, many agreed that Brown's round, pink head is not an indication of baldness but of a fair blond buzz cut accentuated by a curl at the front.

London-based PR maven Matthew Freud, joined by fellow Brit and collaborator Charlie Mackesy, offered his apologies for winning the Oscar for Short Film (Animated) for The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and the Horse.
“I’ve never made a film before, so this is bewildering,” Freud said in accepting the trophy. “I know the protocol is to say ‘thank you’ a lot, but I’m British, so I’m more comfortable saying ‘sorry.’ So, I’m really sorry to all the people who should be on this stage with us,” alluding to the large crew and voice cast who teamed up for two years during Covid to make the film. Freud closed by quipping that he was “also really sorry to my children, my girlfriend and my colleagues at [PR firm] Freuds for basically being absent over the last two years.”

The holidays may have come to a close but watching A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving and A Charlie Brown Christmas are a big part of many people’s holidays. Based on the comics by Charles M. Schulz, Peanuts is one of the most successful comic strips to date.
It’s been 23 years since the last comic strip was released (due to Schulz’s death) but the strip is just as popular as ever. With shorts, a computer-animated movie, and merchandise, Peanuts isn't going anywhere anytime soon. As popular as the strip and its characters are, however, there’s plenty that people don’t know about this iconic comic.
