Ever since Ransom E. Olds founded Oldsmobile in 1901, Americans have been wild about cars. With roads stretching every which way throughout the United States, cars gradually became the country's preferred mode of transportation -- especially after the development of the freeway system. The automotive industry in the U.S., born and centered in Detroit, has also long been a symbol of roll-up-your-sleeve American ingenuity. We dream big, work hard, and produce reliable automobiles. And Fords.
The country's romance with cars is amply reflected in film and television. Back in the 20th century, Hollywood knocked out big-ticket auto racing films like John Frankenheimer's "Grand Prix," Lee H. Katzin's "Le Mans," and no less than three Elvis Presley movies centered on motorsports. Filmmakers also introduced the car chase as an obligatory set piece in action movies, which was quickly adopted by television producers for slam-bang series like "The Dukes of Hazzard,...

Wink Martindale, a rock ‘n’ roll disc jockey and good friend of Elvis Presley who gained fame as the host of such TV game shows as Tic-Tac-Dough, Gambit and High Rollers, died Tuesday in Rancho Mirage, a publicist announced. He was 91.
The friendly Martindale, who had a 74-year career, was known for his resonant voice, vivid sport coats and, especially, his curious first name.
“When I was a kid in Jackson, Tennessee, one of my playmates, Jimmy McCord, couldn’t say ‘Winston,’ which is my given name. He had a speech impediment, and it came out sounding like ‘Winky,’ ” Martindale explained to ABC News in 2014. “So Winston turned into Winky, and then I got into the business and Wink it was! It served me well.”
Martindale recorded for Dot Records — Pat Boone was another artist on that label — and his Deck of Cards, a narrative release from 1959, sold more than 1 million copies.

On August 16, 1977, the world lost iconic performer Elvis Presley, who died at the young age of 42. Presley excelled in many media, from music to television to films and the concert stage, and he became a beloved cultural king worldwide. In music, he was nicknamed the “King of Rock and Roll,” but that genre was not his sole claim to musical significance. Presley performed and was influenced by a number of genres, including country, rockabilly, pop, blues, gospel, and rhythm and blues. In his career, Presley won three Grammy Awards (all for gospel music and none for rock) plus received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1971.
Although he got his start performing rockabilly, the Tupelo-born, Memphis-raised Presley gradually expanded his sphere of influence to include film, television and the concert stage. His appearances on television in the 1950s, in particular on “The Ed Sullivan Show,” caused a storm of controversy about...

Netflix's documentary Return of the King: The Fall and Rise of Elvis Presley has allowed audiences a glimpse into the life of one of pop culture's most famous figures, and the iconic singer has numerous films to check out next. Aside from being one of the defining musical artists of the 20th century, Elvis Presley's acting career saw him star in 31 films, primarily including musicals that showcased his singing talent and charisma.
Throughout the 1950s, Elvis was a fairly consistent box-office success, with his controversial manager, Colonel Tom Parker, dictating many of his acting choices. Presley wanted to partake in more serious roles, but those films, like Flaming Star, earned less at the box office. Movies like Jailhouse Rock and Viva Las Vegas were some of the highest-grossing films of their respective years, proving a desire for his musical movies with accompanied soundtrack albums.

Return of the King: The Fall and Rise of Elvis Presley is Netflix's newest musical documentary, examining Elvis's tumultuous career and highlighting some of the songs he performed in his famous 1968 comeback special. The 1968 Elvis comeback special was a pivotal moment in his career, seeing him return to the stage after years of working in the film industry at the request of his manager, Colonel Tom Parker. Feeling dissatisfied with the lack of artistry in his movies, the special was a return to form for the iconic singer.

Netflix's Return of the King: The Fall and Rise of Elvis Presley revisits that period in Presleys career when he was at a crossroads. Converted seven years previously from singer to movie star at the behest of his influential manager, Colonel Tom Parker, Presley was dissatisfied and restless. Elvis Presley's movie roles had become plastic, fake, and unreal, and he yearned to get back to singing again. With Elvis having taken the musical world by storm in 1956, Parker had been quick to capitalize on his new cash cow's box-office looks and charisma and signed him up for his first movie, Love Me Tender.
The film was panned by critics, but adored by Presley's legion of devoted and mostly female fans. Three movies with Elvis Presley as an actor dropped over the next two years, culminating in King Creole in 1958, before Presley was drafted into the U.S. Army and shipped abroad.

Teri Garr, beloved actress and comic of stage and screen, is dead at the age of 79. In the last decades of her life, she became an inspirational figure for those, like her, diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, tirelessly working to raise awareness of the disease as a frequent speaker at the annual Race to Erase Ms events.
As much as as she inspired people in her last years, she made people smile and laugh throughout her four-decade career on stage and screen as one of the funniest actresses of her generation, in films such as “Young Frankenstein” and “Tootsie.” She was one of the harder-working people in show business, coming up via true bit parts: She was a background dancer in 1964 teen-focused concert film “The T.A.M.I. Show” and even played the Statue of Liberty in a stage production at Walt Disney World when it opened in 1971.

Teri Garr, the Oscar-nominated actress who capitalized on her adorable flightiness in such films as Tootsie and Young Frankenstein before her career was derailed by multiple sclerosis, died Tuesday. She was 79.
Garr, who started out as a background dancer working alongside Elvis Presley in several 1960s party films, died at her home in Los Angeles “surrounded by family and friends,” publicist Heidi Schaeffer told The Hollywood Reporter.
Garr revealed that she had Ms, the chronic, degenerative disease of the nervous system, on Larry King’s CNN show in October 2002, and she survived emergency surgery to treat a brain aneurysm four years later. Her final onscreen appearance came in 2011.
Garr’s career breakthrough came as Gene Wilder’s comely Transylvanian lab assistant in Mel Brooks’ Young Frankenstein (1974). She received her supporting actress Oscar nomination for playing Dustin Hoffman’s insecure actress friend in Sydney Pollack’s Tootsie (1982).
Those films ranked Nos.

There could be more 9-1-1 on the horizon, and the possibilities surrounding that are endless.
When news broke via Variety recently that Ryan Murphy was working on another spinoff of the popular first responder procedural that would potentially come in the wake of 9-1-1: Lone Star officially ending its run over five seasons, many thoughts came to mind.
Fans were delighted to hear that there could be more 9-1-1 to devour, but the scarce details left many wondering what exactly the latest spinoff would entail.
(Disney/Justin Stephens)
Would one of the original characters from the original series or Lone Star find their way over to the new spinoff so audiences already knew a familiar face? Or would this new series feature a brand-new cast?
Would they keep the same setup as the others or switch things up?

Netflix's The Lincoln Lawyer season 3 includes only a couple of songs in each episode, but each selection helps shape the tone and narrative. This season of the show follows Mickey Haller as he faces his biggest test yet representing the man accused of murdering his former friend and client, Glory Days. Over the course of the season, the show lays out the true story of what really happened. Like most things in The Lincoln Lawyer, the answer is far from simple or straightforward. The show provides bits and pieces until the whole picture reveals itself.
Though the mystery itself is essential to the success of The Lincoln Lawyer, other elements besides the story play a crucial role, too. Alongside the cinematography and acting, one of the most important elements is the music. The score by composer Cliff Martinez helps speed up and slow the pacing, adding to the dramatic tension.

On October 9, the historic Tropicana Las Vegas hotel, which opened on April 4, 1957, was imploded to make room for a new baseball stadium.
The third-oldest casino on the strip, Tropicana Las Vegas Hotel closed on April 2, just two days before its 67th anniversary to prepare for its demolition. Many Vegas residents have wondered why the implosion could not be held off for two more days to celebrate the building’s last birthday.
General manager and vice president at the Tropicana Arik Knowles said of the decision, “Let’s not think of it as an ending but as the beginning of something even greater.”

In a tribute to Sin City, Orville Peck and Beck perform back-to-back on a roulette wheel and rope in Sharon Stone for a glitzy Casino callback in the music video for their duet “Death Valley High.”

The song, which will appear on Peck’s upcoming Stampede album when it arrives next month, also bears a jaunty resemblance to Presley’s “Viva Las Vegas,” though the King could never rap like Beck.

According to Jackie, Taylor turned her head to the person sitting next to her and allegedly said, “That again. I can’t do it” in a joking manner.
This is not the first time a lip reader caught Taylor‘s exact words about Travis.
If you don’t remember, after the Kansas City Chiefs won the 2024 Super Bowl, Travis took the microphone and sang a verse of “Viva Las Vegas” while his girlfriend Taylor stood in the crowd. Well, at the charity gala, Travis sang the exact same line again, with Taylor watching on as well.

“In the Streets” is the first edition of the Notebook Insert, a seasonal supplement on moving-image culture.Illustration by Lale Westvind.I started errantly watching live streams at work not long after the Sphere first blinked its enormous electric eye in September 2023. This was a vestige of a pandemic-era habit, lockdown having been a good time to virtually peer into places one could never go. Jellyfish floating in seemingly limitless blue suspension at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, some rural trail in South Dakota, the top of the Eiffel Tower. You could drop in to any of these streams and feel, reassuringly, that nothing consequential was happening. After spending some time letting these feeds unspool in the background, one begins to wonder who set these cameras up; who maintains the connection, checks on the equipment, wipes dirt off the lens; who decided this or that perspective was the best, the most representative,...

Elvis Presley was one of the biggest musicians and actors in the ‘50s and ‘60s. Known as the King of Rock and Roll, the musician was known for his often imitated style and s*xually provocative songs that were revolutionary at the time. He was one of the biggest pop-cultural phenomena in Hollywood and is revered even today. He was portrayed by Austin Butler and Jacob Elordi in two different films in the last two years.
Though he is rumored to have multiple affairs, Presley only married once in his life. The star musician met Priscilla Presley when he was stationed in West Germany during his military service. Presley has been known to have many courtships even after his marriage. His bodyguard during his tours mentioned that he preferred the women he dated not to have one specific quality that would turn him off.

Just one day after phoning into E Street Radio and promising fans a more varied setlist on this leg of the tour, Bruce Springsteen took the stage at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and delivered on that promise. The surprises began when he opened up the show with the 1992 deep cut “Roll of the Dice,” which he hadn’t played in seven years. They continued later in the set when he broke out “Hungry Heart” and “Racing in the Street” for the first time since returning to the road...

In the Summer of 2022, Baz Luhrmann's ‘Elvis‘ premiered in theatres across the country. The biopic, starring Austin Butler as the title figure, reminded past generations of the famed singer and taught younger generations of the Elvis hysteria that took over the world before they were even born. Not only did these younger generations learn of the Elvis Presley legacy, but they also reignited a love for this icon. TikToks of teens visiting Graceland with remixes of “Viva Las Vegas” and “Suspicious Minds” swept the For You Page.
Later that year, writer and director, Sofia Coppola, revealed on her Instagram page that she would soon begin production on ‘Priscilla’. This film would be based on the book Elvis and Me, written by Elvis’ wife, Priscilla. Set pictures soon leaked of Jacob Elordi, of ‘Euphoria’ and ‘Saltburn’ fame, playing the King of Rock and Roll.

Elvis Presley starred in a large number of films, often appearing in multiple movies per year during the 1950s and 1960s. These films featured a mix of recognizable actors and unknowns who would later become major names in the industry. Notable actors such as Dick Sargent, Walter Matthau, Donna Douglas, Charles Bronson, Angela Lansbury, and Barbara Stanwyck appeared alongside Elvis in his movies, taking on both major and minor roles. Even actors who had uncredited or minor roles in Elvis Presley films went on to have successful careers. Examples include Jackie Coogan, Lee Majors, Vincent Price, and Kurt Russell, who made his film debut in an Elvis Presley movie and later portrayed Presley himself in a television movie.
Throughout the 31 feature films that Elvis Presley starred in, there were plenty of opportunity for him to share scenes with notable stars. While the movies of Presley can vary in quality and...

Taylor Swift celebrated Travis Kelce’s Super Bowl win with several long embraces on the field at Allegiant Stadium on Sunday night.
Kelce’s team, the Kansas City Chiefs, beat the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday night to win Super Bowl Lviii in Las Vegas.
During the presentation of the Vince Lombardi Trophy, Swift was seen standing next to Kelce’s mom, Donna, as he spoke with CBS Sports broadcaster Jim Nantz.
She was seen smiling and clapping as the Chiefs’ tight end first busted into a few lines of Elvis Presley’s song “Viva Las Vegas” before then leading the crowd in the Beastie Boys’ “Fight for Your Right.”
After that rousing speech, Swift greeted Kelce with a long hug and several kisses on the field, as she did two weeks ago when the Chiefs won the AFC Championship Game.

Frank Sinatra went through phases like he went through wives. The legendary crooner and movie star could exhibit impeccable taste for what people wanted to see and hear, and then, in a few year's time, completely lose his grasp of the zeitgeist.
Sinatra was threatening to enter one of his down periods in the mid-1960s. The popular music scene was in the throes of Beatlemania, while moviegoers were tiring of the Rat Pack's antics. Who wanted to see Sinatra and the gang saunter their way through Western and gangster pastiches like "4 for Texas" and "Robin and the 7 Hoods" when they could watch Elvis Presley set the screen ablaze with Ann-Margret in "Viva Las Vegas"?
To be fair, Sinatra was still Sinatra, but after giving one of his finest performances in John Frankenheimer's "The Manchurian Candidate," he started playing it way too safe. Bud Yorkin and...

Musical remakes can succeed if they capture the essence of the original movie and enhance a different aspect of the material. Some films, like "Nine" and "Silk Stockings," struggle to justify being musicals and lack the personal touches of their source material. "Little Shop of Horrors" and "Hairspray" showcase the perfect tone for a musical, embracing their extravagant and fun nature.
Over the years, some movies have been remade as musicals, but they haven't always been improved upon in the process. With The Color Purple and Mean Girls shaping up to be two of the biggest movies in January, musical remakes are bigger than ever. It seems possible that there will be more on the horizon if there proves to be an appetite for musical remakes, but there are already plenty of examples to look back on. These movies can show the best way to adapt older films, although sometimes...

Sometimes, the reputations of certain movies have been built up so much over the decades that, to an extent, newcomers can't help but come away disappointed when they finally experience it for the very first time. Others, however, live up to every inch of their status as bona fide classics. It's safe to say that "Close Encounters of a Third Kind," director Steven Spielberg's first film about extraterrestrial visitors, belongs firmly in the latter category. Although multiple generations of movie lovers only encountered the 1977 film through their parents, film school courses, or entirely on their own, various re-releases over the years and constant praise from both filmmakers and critics alike have kept "Close Encounters" exactly where it deserves to be -- at the forefront of the conversation about the greatest and most influential movies of all time.

Just like in George A. Romero's 1978 original, the bulk of Zack Snyder's 2004 remake of "Dawn of the Dead" takes place in a shopping mall. In both films, a group of still-living people take refuge while scads of the undead shamble up against the walls outside. The commentary, of course, is that even after zombification, people still want to worship at consumerism's most powerful megachurch: the modern mall. All their memories and humanity have been erased by zombie-ism, but shopping remains one of their basest instincts. It's hardly a nuanced or complex theme, but it does make both films slightly more interesting.
Snyder's film is more energetic and playful than Romero's, an odd thing to say, given how turgid, humorless, and self-important the bulk of Snyder's films tend to be. One might credit the film's levity to the notoriously jocular screenwriter James Gunn, the director of the "Guardians of the Galaxy" movies.

U2 kicked off their “U2:uv Achtung Baby” residency at Las Vegas’ Msg Sphere on Friday night. The sphere, which cost $2.3 billion to construct, features a wraparound interior LED screen, 170,000 ultra-directional speakers that utilize beamforming technology to deliver targeted audio to every seat in the venue, and a haptic flooring system, among many other high-tech features.
Bono and co. made full use of these features as they ran through a 22-song set that included material from their 1991 studio album, Achtung Baby, as well as their new song “Atomic City” and classics like “Vertigo,” “Where the Streets Have No Name,” With or Without You,” and “Beautiful Day.”

With Saturday marking the first official day of Autumn, Las Vegas’ Life is Beautiful is the last hurrah of the summer festival season.
Life Is Beautiful is unique in that it doesn’t take place in a large field or a city park, but smack dab in the middle of Vegas’ eclectic downtown, turning parking lots into disco rooms, hotels into art exhibits, and swaths of streets into stage areas. Ann-Margret is one of the most famous actresses and sex symbols of the '60s, remaining a big name in the film industry today. Although she took a role in the musical State Fair, Bye Bye Birdie (1963) was the film that made her a household name and ultimately one of the most talked-about stars of the decade. Viva Las Vegas, in which she starred opposite Elvis Presley, also played a part in the launching of the actress' career.

I honestly never expected Steven Spielberg in a Criterion Channel series––certainly not one that pairs him with Kogonada, anime, and Johnny Mnemonic––but so’s the power of artificial intelligence. Perhaps his greatest film (at this point I don’t need to tell you the title) plays with After Yang, Ghost in the Shell, and pre-Matrix Keanu in July’s aptly titled “AI” boasting also Spike Jonze’s Her, Carpenter’s Dark Star, and Computer Chess. Much more analog is a British Noir collection obviously carrying the likes of Odd Man Out, Night and the City, and The Small Back Room, further filled by Joseph Losey’s Time Without Pity and Basil Dearden’s It Always Rains on Sunday. (No two ways about it: these movies have great titles.) An Elvis retrospective brings six features, and the consensus best (Don Siegel’s Flaming Star) comes September 1.

Before Rihanna, before Madonna, before even Cher, there was Ann-Margret.
She was the original mononymous triple threat, hijacking pop culture from the moment she burst onto the scene in the early 1960s.
Born Ann-Margret Olsson in Sweden in 1941, she immigrated to the U.S. with her parents in 1946. A screen test for 20th Century Fox in 1961 led to a seven-year contract and stardom in 1963’s Bye Bye Birdie.
The following year, Ann-Margret was holding her own opposite Elvis Presley in Viva Las Vegas. (When Presley’s then-girlfriend Priscilla learned the two stars had an affair, she “picked up a flower vase and threw it across the room,” according to her 1985 biography Elvis and Me.)
Now 82, Ann-Margret is nowhere near retiring — she’s appeared in recent years on The Kominsky Method and Ray Donovan and recently released an album of rock covers. On May 23, she will host An Evening With Ann-Margret on TCM,...

If the 14th annual TCM Classic Film Festival had an official focus, it was on the 100th anniversary of Warner Bros., from the opening night premiere selection of a restoration of “Rio Bravo” to a celebration of the 50th anniversary of “The Exorcist.” Almost equal in emphasis, though, by virtue of the guests brought in, was a celebration of the ingenues-turned-leading-ladies of the 1960s, who now represent the elder guard of a Hollywood golden age — Angie Dickinson, Ann-Margret and Shirley Jones.
Dickinson had the highest profile of any star at the festival, being the belle of the ball at the Thursday screening of “Rio Bravo” in the big house at the Tcl Chinese Theatres, where most of the screenings were held. But there was just as much outpouring of affection for Ann-Margret, who turned up for a Q&a (and birthday cake) following “Bye Bye Birdie” on Saturday, and Jones,...

Directed by Arthur Ripley, "Thunder Road" is a classic crime film from 1958 that focuses on Lucas Doolin, a Korean War veteran who delivers moonshine in rural mountain states such as North Carolina, Tennessee, and Kentucky. He tries to keep the family business afloat while evading law enforcement. The film features thrilling hot rod chases and action sequences that inspired Bruce Springsteen's song "Thunder Road."

Netflix’s new series “Agent Elvis” arrives March 17 and sees the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll pulling double duty as a singer by day and a secret government battling dark forces by night. And this time, it’s Matthew McConaughey voicing the King.
Accompanying the animated series is a musical soundtrack composed by Tyler Bates and Timothy Williams, who recently scored “Pearl.”
Intertwining iconic Elvis Presley syncs such as “Viva Las Vegas” and “If I Can Dream” is a score with a rock-tinged surfer vibe and plenty of guitar to underscore the action.

The Coen brothers’ quirky cult classic The Big Lebowski has one of the directing duo’s best soundtracks, featuring songs from an eclectic mix of artists. This offbeat take on the film noir revolves around Jeff “The Dude” Lebowski, a zen slacker whose carefree existence is disrupted by a case of mistaken identity and a convoluted kidnapping plot that may or may not have been faked. The soundtrack full of breezy blues tunes and chill rock ‘n’ roll hits is a big part of the relaxed, easygoing mood of the Coens’ uniquely zany neo-noir.
While it received mixed reviews upon its release and initially bombed at the box office (via Collider), today The Big Lebowski is considered a comedy masterpiece, with a widespread cult following and even a religion in its name. This is one of the rare movie soundtracks in which the main character comments on how much he likes the music being played.

The soundtrack of Guy Ritchie’s classic crime comedy Snatch is filled with great needle drops from a wide variety of musicians ranging from Oasis to 10cc to Madonna. After establishing his darkly comedic take on the British crime film in Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels, Ritchie returned to London’s criminal underworld for more violence and pitch-black humor at the hands of tough-as-nails gangsters in Snatch. Snatch weaves two separate narratives – one about the search for a stolen diamond and the other about a crime boss forcing a small-time boxing promoter to step up his game – with ironic twists and chance encounters.
From wisecracking mobsters to nonlinear narratives to a twisted sense of humor, Ritchie borrowed a lot from the Tarantino playbook in rounding out his own signature filmmaking style. Soundtrack needle-drops are another stylistic flourish that Ritchie has taken from Tarantino. Like Tarantino, Ritchie often pairs violent...

As Elvis Presley mesmerizingly sang in the title song to 1964’s Viva Las Vegas, “How I wish that there were more than 24 hours in the day.” His legion of fans will indeed get 24 hours’ worth of a dozen of the King’s movies as he opens TCM’s annual August event, Summer Under the Stars, which honors a different film star each day of the month. Produced by Ian Kirkpatrick and Ryan Tedder, Legend co-wrote “Dope” with Charlie Puth, Tedder, and J.I.D. In the song, Legend and J.I.D sing, and rap, respectively, about their addiction to the women they love on the summery, feel-good track.
“She’s so dope/Wanna be her dope fiend/She showed me what dope mean,” Legend sings on the hook.
