Dame Judi Dench's eyesight issues likely bring an end to her illustrious film career after six decades in the industry. Dench was nominated for 8 Oscars, winning in 1998, with her most recent role being in 2022's Spirited. Age-related macular degeneration leaves Dench unable to continue acting, but she remains involved in charitable endeavors.

One of the world's great actors, Judy Dench came up the traditional - but grueling - ladder for British actors. Dench's apprenticeship lasted years, starting with mystery plays even before attending a drama school. She was 22 before treading the boards in a professional role as Ophelia in Hamlet. She was appearing on television by the 1960s, and in 1964 made her screen debut in The Third Secret. But it wasn't until the 1990s that Dench showed she was one of her country's best screen actors, playing Queen Victoria in Mrs Brown and Queen Elizabeth I in Shakespeare in Love.

Despite revealing that she cannot see on set anymore to read scripts, Dame Judi Dench is refusing to retire due to her love of acting.
The actress has advanced macular degeneration, which causes blurred vision, making it difficult for her to read her scripts. She has been able to overcome this by employing the help of her friends, who aid her in learning her lines. In addition to this, she also says that her photographic memory is extremely helpful as well.
“I can’t see on a film set anymore,” she said in an interview with the U.K.’s Sunday Mirror. “And I can’t see to read. But you just deal with it.”
She was diagnosed back in 2012 and had to stop driving as it became a hazard when her eyesight deteriorated. “I just know I’ll kill somebody if I get behind the wheel of a car now,...

The story of a troubled marriage and a tenacious home wrecker, Psyche 59 is a Brigitte Bardot movie without Bardot – despite its overheated narrative Alexander Singer’s psychosexual potboiler is stuck at room temperature.
Patricia Neal plays Alison Crawford, the unlucky sibling to Samantha Eggar’s hot to trot sister Robin and Curd Jürgens is Eric, the reluctant Romeo in the little flirt’s crosshairs. Jürgens knew the pitfalls of a wandering eye having tangled with Bardot herself in 1956’s And God Created Woman – judging by his reaction to Eggar he hasn’t learned his lesson.
Alison suffers from hysterical blindness and has suppressed the traumatic event that triggered it – her sister’s return unlocks a Pandora’s Box of bad memories but...

This moody, unsettling whodunnit benefits from sensitive cinematography, fine direction and a perfectly-cast group of players. Stephen Boyd gets a worthwhile starring role, backed by some good names and a nice debut from Judi Dench. What I don’t understand is why Pamela Franklin, possibly the most talented and versatile young English player ever, didn’t become a major star. She’s more than half the picture here.
