Chicago – Oscar winning actor Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arawaka were found dead in their New Mexico home on February 26th. Arawaka died of a rare lung infection, the 95-year-old Hackman succumbed to natural causes. Photographer Joe Arce captured this Exclusive Portrait of Hackman in 2000.
The mystery and circumstances surrounding the couple’s death stayed in the headlines for weeks. They both had been deceased for several days before being discovered, and at first is was speculated that carbon monoxide poisoning might have been the culprit. But as the investigation continued, it was determined that Ms. Arawaka had died first on or around February 11th of a rare lung infection, and Hackman … suffering from Alzheimer’s disease … died one week later.

One of the first major film stars to break out in the 1970s, Gene Hackman was the epitome of New Hollywood. An actor with livewire intensity, he had a grit and brusqueness that few others could ever match, and he was perfectly suited for the types of anti-heroic, morally gray characters that would define the Hollywood revolution of the decade. In his Oscar-winning role as a violent, thuggish cop on a mission in “The French Connection,” he showcases unnerving levels of adrenaline and thirst for justice: The way he grits his teeth during the movie’s iconic car chase scene elevates it from very good to extraordinary. In the hands of another actor, the role could be one-note, but Hackman made it iconic.
What Hackman a great actor wasn’t just his talent for playing morally compromised, loathsome men — although his most famous roles over the course of his career fall into that broad archetype.

Gene Hackman, the legendary everyman actor who won two Oscars before stepping away from Hollywood in 2004, and Hackman’s wife, Betsy Arakawa, were found dead in their Santa Fe, N.M., home on Wednesday. Hackman was 95. Arakawa, whom he married in 1991, was 64.
While authorities did not suspect foul play, the deaths of Hackman and Arakawa have been ruled suspicious. A detective's affidavit stated that "an open prescription bottle scattered pills" were found on a bathroom counter near Arakawa's body. One of the couple’s dog, a German shepherd, was found dead in the bathroom closet, about 15 feet from Arakawa. Two other family dogs were found alive.
A maintenance worker discovered the bodies on Wednesday. Arakawa was found in the bathroom near a space heater. Her body showed signs of decomposition, per the detective report. Hackman's body, in a similar state, was found in the mud room appearing as if he had "suddenly fallen.

Gene Hackman, the two-time Academy Award-winning actor known for his roles in films like The French Connection and Unforgiven, has died at the age of 95.
Hackman, his wife Betsy, and their dog were found dead at their home in New Mexico on Wednesday after deputies performed a welfare check, according to CNN. While there were no visible signs of foul play, investigators deemed their deaths “suspicious” after finding “no obvious signs of a gas leak” and the front door of their home “unsecured and opened.”
Hackman was born in San Bernardino, California on January 30th, 1930. Lying about his age, he enlisted in the Marine Corps when he was just 16, serving four years as a field radio operator before being stationed in China, Hawaii, and Japan. He was discharged in 1951.
As he began to pursue an acting career, Hackman joined the historic Pasadena Playhouse, where he met fellow aspiring actor Dustin Hoffman.

Legendary American actor and two-time Oscar winner Gene Hackman has died at the age of 95, it has been confirmed. The screen veteran, star of such films as The French Connection, Unforgiven, The Royal Tenenbaums, and the original Superman, was found dead alongside his 63-year-old wife Betsy Arakawa and the couple's dog at the couple's Santa Fe home late on Wednesday afternoon, per The New York Post.
A character actor in the mould of Humphrey Bogart, Robert Mitchum, and James Cagney, Hackman — over the course of an acting career spanning five decades, 85 movies, and dozens more plays and television shows — demonstrated remarkable range and an ineffable combination of grit and charisma that enabled him to play average Joes, comic book supervillains, no-nonsense cops, and estranged patriarchs that all felt real, all felt alive. Among his contemporaries, the Pacinos, Hoffmans, and De Niros of this world, Hackman measured up and stood tall,...

Between his big-screen acting debut in Robert Rossen's vastly underrated "Lilith" and his swan song "Welcome to Mooseport," Gene Hackman had a reputation for being a prolific and, at times, nowhere-near-choosy-enough actor given his considerable talents. But when you look over that 40-year career, you don't see an egregious number of turkeys. The Dan Aykroyd buddy-cop comedy "Loose Cannons" or his third go-round as Lex Luthor in "Superman IV: The Quest for Peace" are probably the twin nadirs of his career, but mostly Hackman had a propensity to make many mediocre movies watchable. He was the reason you'd find yourself halfway through Nicholas Meyer's ho-hum spy thriller "Company Business" without any real complaints. Could it be better? Absolutely. But it had Hackman.
The movies -- great, average, or garbage -- haven't had Hackman since 2004, which never ceases to stink.

Now that Under Paris is getting a sequel, Jason Stathams blockbuster The Meg franchise finally has some competition as the twenty-first centurys biggest shark horror series. The Megs 2018 success came as something of a surprise in a summer packed with blockbuster hits. The same year that Avengers: Infinity War, Black Panther, Venom, Deadpool 2, and Aquaman dominated the box office, a killer shark movie with one A-list star that spent almost three decades in development hell earned over $500 million. Similarly, Netflixs shark horror Under Paris was a surprise sleeper hit when the low-budget French disaster movie was released.

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water... Actually, who are we kidding? We absolutely did not think it was safe to go back in any sort of water at the end of Under Paris, the surprisingly successful French shark movie that whipped up a viewing frenzy when it dropped on Netflix earlier this summer. And yet, despite the somewhat apocalyptic climax to Xavier Gens' *ahem* in-Seine creature feature, the intrepid filmmaker is preparing to dive back into the City of Love's shark infested waters once again with a sequel to his summer smash.

Last December, the folks at Cosmic Circus dropped the rumor that a team of supernatural characters known as the Midnight Sons might be coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe… and now, industry scooper Daniel Richtman has revealed that sources indicate Marvel might be putting a Midnight Sons movie on the fast track to production! According to Richtman, Marvel is currently looking to get a director attached to the project.
One of my favorite comic book story arcs is the “Rise of the Midnight Sons”, which saw Doctor Strange overseeing the formation of a team of supernatural heroes – Ghost Rider, Johnny Blaze, Morbius, the Nightstalkers, and Darkhold characters Vicki Montesi, Louise Hastings, and Sam Buchanan – who were brought together to battle Lilith, the Mother of All Demons, and her evil offspring, the Lilin. Supernatural has had an impressive Rogues Gallery over the seasons, but the series' early years had some of its best. One that sticks out the most is the Season 3 addition of the demon Lilith. Penned during the writer's strike of '07-'08, Lilith arrives as a new adversary to challenge monster-hunting brothers Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles). Supernatural takes after other genre shows of its kind, such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the X-Files, by implementing a monster of the week style while building up to a villain of the season.
The previous two seasons revolve around finding the brothers' missing father, John Winchester (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), and the Yellow-Eyed Demon who killed their mother, also known as Azazel (Frederic Lehne). Dean kills Azazel at the end of Season 2, leaving a power vacuum open for many demon factions to curry favor. Once Lilith becomes the obvious leader of these factions,...

Update: Jeymes Samuel has released a statement denying the World of Reel’s Blade report. Samuel wrote, “I don’t know where these rumors start, but I am not in talks to do Blade with Marvel. While the 2024 Borderlands movie may not have lived up to expectations, nobody can blame the stellar cast, and Gina Gershon stands out for her portrayal of Mad Moxxi. The film is based on the action RPG first-person shooter Borderlands video game series of the same name that sees the player as a "Vault Hunter", searching for a vault of alien riches on the dangerous planet of Pandora. In the first game, Moxxi is an Npc and the introduced as the hostess of the Underdome's Colosseum matches.
Gershon's Mad Moxxi doesn't play a large part in the movie's plot, but the actress fits right in with the Borderlands cast as a formidable character not to be trifled with. The film was dismissed as being another unnecessary video adaptation, but Borderlands sets itself apart in that it's chock-full of tough, layered female characters. Borderlands is getting another shot at finding an audience. Lionsgate has revealed that the video game adaptation will be heading to PVOD this Friday.
Although Borderlands has been in theaters for less than a month, the movie has been a major flop at the box office. At the time of writing, Borderlands has only grossed $25.1 million worldwide off a budget of $120 million, becoming one of the biggest box-office bombs of all time. This is likely why Lionsgate is releasing Borderlands on PVOD on Friday, Aug. 30, hoping that those who don't frequent the theater (or read reviews) will buy or rent the movie at home.

Spoilers are ahead for the Borderlands movie's ending.
Cate Blanchett's star power was misused in Borderlands, which made a major mistake by making Lilith the clear-cut main character. Borderlands failed to adapt the beloved characters and ensemble-driven storytelling of the video game series. Altering characters like Tiny Tina to serve Lilith's story undermine the essence of the Borderlands franchise.
There's no denying that two-time Oscar-winning actor Cate Blanchett is an asset to every film she's part of, but, unfortunately, her character of Lilith began a chain reaction of problems for the Borderlands movie. An adaptation of Gearbox Software's bestselling video game series of the same name, Borderlands landed a dismal Rotten Tomatoes score right out of the gate. With terrible buzz from critics and audiences alike, director Eli Roth's Borderlands became a box office disappointment, garnering less than $10 million over its opening weekend against a $120 million budget.

Aside from Borderlands' dismal (and rare) Rotten Tomatoes score, the movie made less than $10 million over its opening weekend. Before Borderlands became a box office flop,...

Lilith's powers develop throughout the film and are only revealed fully in the climax, a departure from the games. Lilith's direct connection to the Vault is original and important in the cinematic version. Characters and relationships significantly differ between the Borderlands film and the original games.
Borderlands takes some liberties with the source material and makes several notable changes from the games. Based on the video game franchise of the same name, Borderlands takes many of its visual cues and character concepts directly from the games. However, while many of them look like accurate reinterpations of Borderlands' cast of colorful characters, their roles in the story and unique abilities are changed to fit a new narrative.

Eli Roth’s Borderlands may have to work harder in the next couple of weeks as the science fiction film starring Kevin Hart and Cate Blanchett opens with a depressing box office haul. It also did not help that it premiered alongside Blake Lively’s romantic drama movie, It Ends With Us, as the latter immensely captured the audience’s interest.
Eli Roth’s Borderlands / Lionsgate Films
The big-screen adaptation of the famed Gearbox Software video game suffered tremendous criticism from fans even before its opening day, and with the result of early screening reviews, it seems like an uphill battle to at least turn a profit.

Lionsgate’s Borderlands infamously received a zero approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes before its worldwide premiere. Regardless, this won’t totally affect the interest of fans who want to see the film for themselves.

Lionsgate’s Borderlands hits theaters Aug. 9, but the review embargo for the film broke Thursday, and the early reaction from critics has been dire.
A live-action adaptation of Gearbox Software’s popular video game series, Eli Roth’s film takes place on the planet Pandora and tells the story of a band of outlaw misfits. The film stars Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Ariana Greenblatt and Jamie Lee Curtis, with Jack Black providing the voice of a wisecracking robot.
As of Thursday evening, the review aggregator sites have damning scores for Borderlands. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film’s score clocked in at a lowly 6 percent from 45 reviews. Mercifully, the audience score on Rotten Tomatoes is markedly higher at 51 percent so far. On Metacritic, the critic score was 29 based on 23 reviews and things were no better on Letterboxd, where users gave Borderlands a score of 2.1/5.
Below are key excerpts from some of the most prominent early reviews.

After The Last Of Us and Fallout, you’d be forgiven for thinking that we are finally enjoying an era of quality video-game adaptations, and that Borderlands, based on the wacky 2009 sci-fi shooter RPG, is riding the same wave. Hell, it’s even got Cate Blanchett (an actor who’s earned those italics twice over) in the lead role, having a bullet-spraying hoot as a grizzled yet elegant bounty hunter. And with its colourful assortment of irreverent characters, corralled by a writer/director best known previously for horror, you might also expect, or at least hope, it respectfully and effectively echoes James Gunn’s crossover success with his Guardians Of The Galaxy films.
Sadly, that ain’t the case. Borderlands so wants to be Guardians Of The Galaxy. It has retro needle drops aplenty (including a battle that kicks off to Motörhead’s ‘Ace Of Spades’) and ladles on as...

Borderlands movie features star-studded cast, accurate characters, and attention to detail for long-time fans to enjoy. Theatrical release on August 9, 2024, with no premium format options, making it a quick PG-13 watch. Streaming release on Starz expected in early 2025, with potential for a digital release as early as September 2024.
The live-action Borderlands movie is finally here, and where to watch the video game movie could depend on timing. After the continued success of the Gearbox and 2K video game, Lionsgate began developing a movie adaptation in 2015. Progress eventually moved forward to the points where Borderlands' cast became filled with recognizable stars, ranging from Cate Blanchett to Kevin Hart and Jamie Lee Curtis. Each is responsible for bringing various Borderlands video game characters to life in live-action for the first time, and for what could be the start of a new franchise.

While you wait for the beloved comedy series to return we thought of informing you what the original cast has been up to since the original spin-off series ended.
Bebe Neuwirth Credit – NBC and Paramount+
Neuwirth’s Lilith was one of the favorites in the original Frasier series and after her return in the reboot, the fans want more of her. The actress who played the role of the ex-wife of our neurotic Frasier Crane has had numerous memorable roles since the original series including in Max’s Julia, the political drama Madam Secretary, and the popular legal drama series The Good Fight.

Warning: The following contains descriptions of several death scenes from Under Paris, now streaming on Netflix.
Under Paris has some truly over-the-top deaths, like swimmers being picked off by Lilith the shark during a triathalon. The deaths start out early, setting the tone for the film by having Lilith take out four divers easily. The most tragic deaths are the ones caused by human error, underscoring the film's central themes.

Niles' return in the Frasier reboot is crucial for fans, even if it's just for a one-off cameo appearance. Luckily, he's open to reprising the role, but only in a limited capacity. David Hyde Pierce's one condition for reprising Niles is simple and easy to meet, making his return highly anticipated. Bringing Niles back to Boston for a visit is a natural fit narratively for the Frasier reboot, with plenty of reasons for him to be there with his brother and son.
After David Hyde Pierce revealed his condition for reprising Niles, I won't accept any excuse for not seeing the younger Crane brother in the Frasier reboot. Kelsey Grammer has always been great as Frasier Crane. Even when he was a side character in Cheers with minimal screentime, he shone, so despite the initial skepticism of awarding him his spinoff, it made sense for Frasier creators, David Angell,...

Under Paris presents a bleak commentary on human flaws hidden beneath campy shark kills. Lilith symbolizes humanity's impact on the world, and how the world can lash back out at humanity. Under Paris offers a dark contrast to "man vs. nature" narratives like Jaws, highlighting human failures with a dour finale.

The Mvp of the Egghead Island arc, Dr. Vegapunk, has certainly made a name for himself as one of the most important characters in One Piece. Could it be? Are the "Shark Horror" gods smiling upon us from Atlantis? Xavier Gens' Under Paris blends the bureaucratic foolhardiness of Jaws with Deep Blue Sea’s tempo. While science-based ecological themes get murky, the film shines at its most chaotic. A rogue female mako swimming France' Seine River brings shades of Dick Maas' Amsterdamned or Uncaged, varying takes on horrific (and preposterous) scenarios in major metropolitan areas. Don't look to Under Paris for grounded realism or bulletproof storytelling, but compared to the recent deluge of utterly impotent fin flicks over the last few years? Gens' aquatic thriller on Netflix is like stumbling upon the Holy Grail of Shark Horror.
Best Supporting Actress nominee Bérénice Bejo (The Artist) stars as oceanic wildlife researcher Sophia. Tragedy strikes when a tagged mako named Lilith turns on Sophia's diving team, including her husband, leaving Sophia with permanent pressure damage and her scuba squad deceased.

If Criterion24/7 hasn’t completely colonized your attention every time you open the Channel––this is to say: if you’re stronger than me––their May lineup may be of interest. First and foremost I’m happy to see a Michael Roemer triple-feature: his superlative Nothing But a Man, arriving in a Criterion Edition, and the recently rediscovered The Plot Against Harry and Vengeance is Mine, three distinct features that suggest a long-lost voice of American movies. Meanwhile, Nobuhiko Obayashi’s Antiwar Trilogy four by Sara Driver, and a wide collection from Ayoka Chenzira fill out the auteurist sets.

Cate Blanchett is almost 30 years older than Lilith was in the original Borderlands game. Eli Roth's Borderlands movie captures the game's look and tone, which should intrigue franchise fans and newcomers. The fanbase for Lilith will grow following the movie adaptation's release.

The moment Elvis Presley stepped in front of the camera for his second appearance on "The Milton Berle Show" in 1956, there was no doubt that this young man was destined for more than pop music superstardom. Much more.
Conversationally, he was downright adorable with his boyish good looks and aw-shucks Southern shyness, but once the music kicked in he was transformed into a hunk of burning lust. That gyrating pelvis and run-riot voice spurred sexual awakenings in living rooms across the country (in full view of outraged parents). To teenagers, Elvis belted out a call to rebellion. To parents, he was a pompadoured incubus. To Hollywood, he was singing, swaggering box-office gold.
Between 1956 and 1972, Elvis starred in 31 features and two concert films. There were lulls (particularly when his popularity faded prior to his 1968 comeback special), but for the most part Elvis reliably packed 'em in. According to producer Hal B. Wallis...

One of the most quoted pieces of Hollywood wisdom holds that 90 percent of directing is casting. You bring the right actors together, and you're off to the races. This is, of course, laughably simplistic. You could argue that 90 percent of directing is writing because there's no movie or show to make if there's nothing on the page. And many directors will tell you that their films don't truly come together until they're hunkered down with their editor in post-production.
The truth, obviously, is that film and television production is a collaborative process that requires numerous people with expertise in different disciplines to do what they do at the highest level possible. And when it comes to casting, there is absolutely an art to finding, after untold hours of reels and cold reads, the ideal actor for each role — especially if you're trying to launch a successful television series. When it comes to guest appearances on the new "Frasier" revival, all the talk has been about returning stars from the original series. The 10–episode reboot show has so far seen the return of Frasier's ex-wife, former "Cheers" co-star, and frequent "Frasier" guest star Lilith (Bebe Neuwirth). Soon we'll also see the return of Peri Gilpin, who played the doctor's radio show producer, Roz, in the original series. Alas, we won't be treated to a guest appearance by David Hyde Pierce's Niles after the actor turned down the opportunity to return for the new show.
I would say it's all been exciting stuff, but really it's been vaguely amusing stuff that feels at once comfortable and uncanny — like we're watching an alternate reality version of "Frasier" written by super-fans that's not as good as the original. With 264 episodes, not a single one of which doesn’t have something to recommend it, picking out the best of NBC’s Frasier (1993 – 2004) is a ridiculous thing to attempt. For a start, you’d need to include all of the dinner party episodes, obviously, plus every story in which Niles and Frasier ruinously compete with one another.
Such a list also couldn’t leave out any occasion on which John Mahoney as Marty Crane swerves mid-comedy to punch you in the gut with feelings, or any of Kelsey Grammer’s brilliantly controlled clowning.
You’d need to represent every perfectly timed trick from Eddie the dog, and have a fair smattering of Maris gags, Roz’s smart mouth and Daphne’s stories of an English childhood just to cover the basics. You’d be into the high 90s before you’d even got going.
To winnow it down to just the 50 best episodes of Frasier?...
