Marlon Brando’s Forgotten Comedy Gem: The Only Film Set He Actually Enjoyed
Image
Marlon Brando’s Forgotten Comedy Gem(Photo Credit –YouTube)

Marlon Brando’s Bedtime Story didn’t begin with any grand ambitions. It was practically sandwiched between his flops and fading headlines, and honestly, made way into his career like a breeze drifting through a stormy season. By that time, the actor once hailed as the future of Hollywood had started to grow weary, somewhat distant, and worn out by his fame. He had become the kind of person who made directors anxious and studio execs rethink contracts.

Marlon Brando’s Breakthrough In The 1950s

Things looked very different for Marlon Brando back in the early 1950s. He was a revelation, to say the least. He didn’t act the way others did, and while some recited lines with polish, he seemed to live in each role, breathing through the character’s lungs. Audiences saw something new in him as well.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels: Steve Martin’s Best Movie?
Anthony Edwards, Robert Carradine, Donald Gibb, Ted McGinley, Julia Montgomery, and Matt Salinger in Les Tronches (1984)
One of the classic movie tropes of studio comedies, and especially in the 70s and 80s- is the ever-clever “slobs vs snobs” tale. You know, the blue-collar underdog against a preppy, often annoyingly sophisticated social elite. Movies like Revenge of the Nerds, Animal House, Wayne’s World, or Caddyshack make this the crux of their stories and often use multiple characters in each category to drive the shenanigans all the way up. But in some cases, a movie will tell the story with just one slob and one snob- and crank them both to their absolute extremes- and then throw in a heist because… we love that stuff.

In today’s episode of Revisited, we’re going to be talking about 1988’s buddy comedy classic- Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. This movie stars Steve Martin and (the now retired) Michael Caine as two con artists who make an old western-style bet to run each other out of town.

Marlon Brando, David Niven, and Shirley Jones in Les séducteurs (1964)
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels Could've Starred Mick Jagger And David Bowie
Marlon Brando, David Niven, and Shirley Jones in Les séducteurs (1964)
The 1964 comedy "Bedtime Story" starring Marlon Brando, David Niven, and Shirley Jones is about two conmen with clashing styles that find themselves competing to scam the same wealthy heiress. In 1988 Orion Pictures remade the film as "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" with Steve Martin and Michael Caine. The movie would be made again in 2019 as "The Hustle" starring Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson, with the gender roles flipped.

Of the three versions, it is perhaps an unrealized vision for the film that might have led to the most memorable of them all. The 1988 pairing of Martin and Caine was brilliant, with Caine's...

‘Last Man Standing': Mike Tells Vanessa She Snores, Vanessa Has a Very Unreasonable Reaction (Exclusive Video)
Mike Baxter (Tim Allen) has a problem on Thursday’s “Last Man Standing” — what else is new, right? — one that he can’t sleep on any longer: Vanessa (Nancy Travis) has started snoring and he is incapable of suffering through it. Of course, he does his best to present this issue to his dear wife in the most loving way possible, but she still doesn’t take the news so well.

In TheWrap’s exclusive clip from tomorrow’s episode, Mike comes home after a “taxing” day at work and slowly tries to broach the topic gently by saying, “You’re beautiful, funny and so understanding,” to which she goes, “Mike?”

Fine. “You snore!” he shouts.

“I mean with an extraordinary amount of gusto, I might add.”

The Hustle Review and Rating (2019)
The Hustle is a gender-swapped rehash of "buddy films" featuring tricksters who are out to outwit each other and con people of their money. The films that immediately come to your mind are the 1964 released "Bedtime Story" starring David Niven and Marlon Brando, and the 1988 released "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" featuring Michael Caine and Steve Martin.

Director Chris Addison replaces the heroes of the original with women, so here we have Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson playing high-stake fraudsters who swindle naive people. She does so probably, as Hathaway's character puts it, "men can't imagine that a woman is cleverer than they are." And she fails miserably.

Set in the sophisticated but fictional town of Beaumont-sur-Mer, Josephine Chesterfield (Anne Hathaway), a glamorous seductress fleeces gullible wealthy men from all corners of the world. Into her well-ordered, meticulously schemed universe, bursts a small-time trickster Penny Rust (Rebel Wilson) an Australian who is...

‘The Hustle’ Review
Stars: Anne Hathaway, Rebel Wilson, Alex Sharp, Ingrid Oliver, Emma Davies, Dean Norris, Casper Christensen | Written by Stanley Shapiro, Paul Henning, Dale Launer, Jac Schaeffer | Directed by Chris Addison

Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson star as a pair of rival con artists in The Hustle, a remake of 1988′s Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (with Michael Caine and Steve Martin), which was itself a remake of 1964′s Bedtime Story, with David Niven and Marlon Brando. That might sound like a tantalising proposition on paper, but the actual film is a profound disappointment with an almost criminal lack of laughs.

Wilson plays low-rent Aussie grifter Penny Rust, whose regular scam involves fleecing gullible men she meets on a dating app. On a train to the South of France, she meets high class con artist Josephine Chesterfield (Hathaway), who immediately schemes to divert Penny from her home turf of Riviera town Beaumont-sur-Mer, on the...

‘The Hustle’ Review: You’ll Feel Horribly Cheated
You don’t need immersive technologies like Dolby Cinema, Screen X or 4Dx to feel the effects of The Hustle. After 94 minutes without a single laugh, you’ll definitely feel the pain knowing that you’ve wasted time and money on this dreadful farce. Allegedly a remake of the far superior Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (which itself was a remake of Bedtime Story), the Chris Addison-directed picture credits four screenwriters and yet adds nothing to the original formula nor does it do anything exciting with a well-established genre built on double and triple crosses.

Of the four credited writers, two have passed on years ago, previously credited with Bedtime Story. Dale Launer received credit for this mess as the writer of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. This leaves Jac Schaeffer, the only new writer with a credit to bear the brunt of the shame for a picture that no doubt was conceived...

Film Review: Predictable, Unfunny ‘The Hustle’ Has No Game
Chicago – As the “Oceans Eight” remake of last year proved, it is simply not enough to redo a film and flip the gender focus. Anne Hathaway may be the kiss of death for this genre, as she appeared both in O8 and the current “The Hustle,” which in turn is a remake of “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” (1988). Rebel Wilson, doing what Rebel Wilson does, portrays her sidekick.

Rating: 2.0/5.0

Hathaway and Wilson have little chemistry together, but that is the least of sins for “The Hustle.” Not only is the title lazy as hell, but the whole she-bang (ha) is flat and unfunny. It’s been years since I’ve seen the original – which was in itself a remake of the 1964 film “Bedtime Story” – but both those films must have more life than this tepid exercise in dreck. The screenplay credits list four names, a sure tip that the film we’re about to see is lost,...

The Hustle Review
1988’s Dirty Rotten Scoundrels isn’t often cited as the best that 1980s comedy had to offer, but it did have one thing going for it – Steve Martin at his absolute best.

With Michael Caine infusing his successful conman with pomposity and pretentiousness, Martin took the role of Freddy Benson and made it as memorable as any other he performed during his decade at the pinnacle of Hollywood comedy.

Which is why it’s baffling that Chris Addison’s 2019 remake fails to update the script, rather, the movie asks Rebel Wilson to achieve the impossible feat of repeating Martin’s antics and elevating a decent, if somewhat lightweight story to comedy glory.

Wilson plays Penny, a small-time con artist who ‘catfishes’ young men by convincing them they’re going to meet the woman of their dreams. When they meet her instead, should they show the requisite level of disappointment, she...

The Hustle – Review
Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson team up for the terrible new comedy The Hustle. Bewitched and bamboozled, men tend to make fools of themselves around this pair, con artists plying their trade in the French Riviera. Glamorous and cunning Josephine Chesterfield (Hathaway) has a talent for defrauding gullible wealthy men from all corners of the world. The more fun-loving Penny Rust (Wilson) is an Aussie who fleeces her marks in neighborhood bars. Despite their different methods, they team up in France to swindle a naïve tech billionaire (Alex Sharp). Bank accounts are emptied, true love is declared, and common sense left in the gutter.

The Hustle feminizes the perennially male profession of con artists. This might seem like a fresh take if we hadn’t just seen women con artists (including Ms Hathaway!) in Oceans Eight a few months ago. There’s little to keep you entertained here as Hathaway...

‘The Hustle’ Review: Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson Are Great Partners in a Criminally Mediocre Comedy
Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson in Le coup du siècle (2019)
Riding in on the wave of gender-swapped remakes, The Hustle is a comedy whose timing is late in every sense of the word. ‘The Hustle’ Film Review: Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson Are Robbed of a Worthwhile Comedy
Chris Addison
There is a smart movie nestled somewhere in director Chris Addison’s romp, “The Hustle,” but you have to weed through a whole lot of foolery to get to it. The new film is ripe for big laughs with Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson as, respectively, the snobby British bombshell with sticky fingers and the rough-around-the-edges though equally cunning con artist, but neither actress is given rich enough material to bring the film’s most interesting ideas to the finish line.

Hollywood has had a growing fascination with the female swindler, often to confront a larger issue of sexism and lack of female agency. And for about the first 20 minutes of “The Hustle,” it looks like screenwriter Jac Schaeffer — sharing credit with her antecedents, the creators of 1964’s “Bedtime Story,” Stanley Shapiro and Paul Henning, as well as Dale Launer, who wrote that film’s 1988 remake, “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” — is...

Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson in Le coup du siècle (2019)
Film Review: ‘The Hustle’
Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson in Le coup du siècle (2019)
“The Hustle” is a rivals-in-crime feminista scam comedy set on the French Riviera, with Anne Hathaway as a drop-dead-elegant British seductress-grifter who fleeces wealthy suckers the way they deserve to be fleeced, and Rebel Wilson as a disheveled vulgarian who’s just as shrewd an operator (she works the same trickery on a more low-rent breed of men). The movie is a remake of “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” (1988), which was a remake of “Bedtime Story” (1964). And this trio of light-fingered films, each made decades apart, adds up to a peculiar footnote in the history of Hollywood con-artist deviltry.

Each film comes with a movie-star pairing that sounds, on paper, like wild-meets-debonair perfection: Marlon Brando and David Niven in “Bedtime Story,” Steve Martin and Michael Caine in “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,” and now Wilson and Hathaway in “The Hustle.” Each film is a stylized confection of drawing-room class tension, airy sight gags, and...

Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson in Le coup du siècle (2019)
‘The Hustle’ Review: Audiences, Prepare to Feel Conned
Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson in Le coup du siècle (2019)
They say it’s all in the timing, especially when it comes to funny business. But in The Hustle everyone’s inner comedic clock is calamitously off. The setups are flat, the jokes don’t land and the actors don’t — or won’t — connect. How does this happen in a movie that stars Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson, two proven experts at the art of farce? Oscar winner Hathaway stole the show from her A-list costars in Ocean’s 8. And Wilson, best known as Fat Amy in the Pitch Perfect franchise,...

With “Avengers: Endgame” well on its way to passing “Avatar” as the biggest box-office hit ever, Disney’s already firm grip on the box office has squeezed even tighter. Now it’s time to find out if the rest of Hollywood can find its own success this summer against the growing media behemoth, starting this weekend with Warner Bros./Legendary’s “Detective Pikachu.”

Movies based on video games have generally had a reputation for poor reviews and, aside from a few exceptions like “Resident Evil,” weak numbers at the box office. But “Detective Pikachu,” the first live-action film based on “Pokemon,” could buck that trend. Trailers for the film have built incredible social-media buzz thanks to the film’s CGI interpretations of various beloved Pokemon, as well as Ryan Reynolds’ voice performance as the electric mouse sleuth. Reviews have also been positive with a 71% Rotten Tomatoes score.

Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson in Le coup du siècle (2019)
Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson Scam the Hell Out of Rich Men in The Hustle Trailer
Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson in Le coup du siècle (2019)
In the new trailer for The Hustle, Anne Hathaway adopts a posh British accent to play an experienced scam artist who takes Rebel Wilson under her very glamorous wing so they can scam a billionaire together - so, yeah, we're definitely seeing this.

The hilarious buddy comedy - which was originally titled Nasty Women and is a gender-swapped version of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels - was directed by Chris Addison and focuses on seeing Wilson and Hathaway's characters taking down the men who have wronged them. Previously, the roles were played by Steve Martin and Michael Caine in the 1988 crime comedy. Fortunately, the latest iteration of the caper promises stunning views of mansions, diamonds, Hathaway's extensive collection of gowns, and plenty of physical comedy from Wilson.

Tim Blake Nelson, Alex Sharp, Ingrid Oliver, and Emma Davies also star in the film, which will hit theaters on May 10.

Anne Hathaway, Rebel Wilson Scam ‘Small-Minded Men’ in ‘The Hustle’ Trailer
MGM released a new trailer for The Hustle, a comedy starring Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson as scam artists teaming up to take revenge on the men who’ve wronged them. The film is a gender-bent remake of 1988’s Dirty Rotten Scoundrels with Steve Martin and Michael Caine, itself a remake of the 1964 Marlon Brando/David Niven comedy Bedtime Story.

As seen in the Avengers-parodying teaser, Hathaway plays a posh Englishwoman alongside Wilson’s raunchier, low-class character. In classic buddy-comedy fashion, plenty of hijinks ensue around the characters’ differences, and...

Rebel Wilson
How Rebel Wilson Fought the MPAA to Change The Hustle's R-Rating to PG-13
Rebel Wilson
Rebel Wilson fought the MPAA for The Hustle's PG-13 rating. The upcoming comedy is another take on 1988's Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, which was a remake of the 1964 comedy Bedtime Story. In the original movies, two male scam artists are trying to manipulate rich women out of their money. The Hustle takes the same premise and flips it, making Wilson and co-star Anne Hathaway the scam artists as they go after the money of rich men. So far, the trailer has been getting positive responses from moviegoers.

After going through the ratings process, the MPAA gave The Hustle an R-rating. However, Rebel Wilson did not believe the comedy deserved the rating, which she called "rude" in a recent interview. Since she was a producer on the movie and had so much invested in it, she decided to go into the arbitration hearing and fight for a PG-13 rating. Wilson has...

S.O.S. fantômes (1984)
13 Movie Reboots With Gender-Swapped Leads, From ‘His Girl Friday’ to ‘What Men Want’ (Photos)
S.O.S. fantômes (1984)
From lady “Ghostbusters” to talk of a female James Bond, Hollywood has taken a shine to remaking classic movies or TV shows with gender-swapped leads as a way of mixing up a tried and true formula. But the trend dates back farther than to just the last few years. The latest example of this is “What Men Want” opening Friday, which swaps out Mel Gibson for Taraji P. Henson. But here are some other movies that looked to remake something old with not just a fresh face but from an entirely different point of view.

“His Girl Friday” (1940)

Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell move a mile a minute and have a natural chemistry as reporters Walter Burns and Hildy Johnson in Howard Hawks’s screwball comedy classic “His Girl Friday.” But missing from its source material, both the play and the movie “The Front Page” by playwright Ben Hecht, is...

‘The Hustle’ Trailer Reveals Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson in Comedy Remake
MGM has released the first trailer for the upcoming comedy The Hustle, which is a gender-swapped remake of the 1988 film Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, which itself was a remake of a 1964 film called Bedtime Story. This new iteration hails from director Chris Addison (Veep) and stars Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson as a pair of con artists who team up to take on the men who have wronged them. Hathaway’s character is a refined pro, whereas Wilson’s character is a scrappy street con artist. Hathaway’s character then takes it upon herself to teach Wilson’s …...

Steve Martin and Michael Caine in Le plus escroc des deux (1988)
The Hustle Trailer: Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson Are Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
Steve Martin and Michael Caine in Le plus escroc des deux (1988)
Instead of touting itself as a female remake of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, which hasn't really worked for some of the redos in recent past, MGM has simply changed the title to The Hustle, hoping to avoid the fan outrage that plagued Ghostbusters 2016 and Ocean's 8. Today, we get the first trailer and poster, and obviously, the title itself is a bit of a hustle cause, yes, this is descriptively a direct remake, though told with a twist.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels was itself a remake, and also got a title change. Everything starts with the 1964 movie Bedtime Story, starring Marlon Brando and David Nevin. Then it was Steve Marin and Michael Caine who more famously took on the con. Now it's Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson scamming their way into our hearts. And whoever is at the forefront of this deceptive tale, it still appears to be as funny as it ever was.

Incredibles 2 Comic Book Tie-In Coming from Dark Horse
Samuel L. Jackson, Holly Hunter, Craig T. Nelson, Brad Bird, Michelle Rodriguez, Bill Wise, Sarah Vowell, Eli Fucile, Mina Sundwall, Clarke Wolfe, Gillian Flynn, and Huck Milner in Les Indestructibles 2 (2018)
The Incredibles 2 is getting not one, but two different tie-in comics from Dark Horse this year. It's been 14 years since Disney and Pixar unleashed The Incredibles on the world, and perhaps no movie in the studio's history has been so deserving of a sequel. That sequel is coming this summer in the form of Incredibles 2, which arrives in theaters on June 15. But that's not all, as fans will also have two different comic books to dig into that further explore Pixar's superpowered family.

Dark Horse Comics is behind both of the upcoming Incredibles 2 tie-in comics. Since Disney owns Marvel Comics, it seems a little surprising that they're not handling these comics, but it's Dark Horse that's bringing us these additional Incredibles stories later this year. Dark Horse was in charge of publishing the Star Wars comics until Disney purchased Lucasfilm and decided the property would be heading back to Marvel.

Rebel Wilson
First Look at Rebel Wilson and Anne Hathaway in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels Remake
Rebel Wilson
Rebel Wilson has been attached to the all-female reboot of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels since 2016, back when the movie was called Nasty Women. Anne Hathaway signed on in January of 2017 and now we have a new title and an official release date from Wilson, along with a first look sneak peek. Much like the 1988 movie, which is a remake of the 1964 movie Bedtime Story, Rebel Wilson and Anne Hathaway will play two con artists in a competition to swindle a member of the opposite sex out of money.

Rebel Wilson, seen in the first look image standing with Anne Hathaway, took to social media today to announce that the official title of their Dirty Rotten Scoundrels reboot is The Hustle, which is not to be confused with the 1975 or the 2008 movies of the same name. Wilson also announced that the movie will come out on June 29th of this year, which...

There’s arguably no more important television than children’s television. Sure, you could be one of those parents who doesn’t let their child anywhere near a screen – but chances are, if you’re the kind of person to read Den of Geek, the idea of doing so would utterly horrify you.

‘The Princess Bride’ 30th Anniversary Trailer: The Greatest Bedtime Story Ever Filmed
While “The Princess Bride” seems like the kind of movie that couldn’t get made now, it’s a miracle it got made back then. It took nearly two decades for William Goldman‘s 1973 novel (which is pretty damn great on its own) to find its way to the big screen, but when it finally did, the mix of ingredients was absolutely perfect.

Directed by Rob Reiner, and featuring a terrific ensemble cast — Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, Wallace Shawn, Andre The Giant, Christopher Guest, Peter Falk, Fred Savage — who couldn’t be better, the meta and arch bedtime story is endlessly hilarious, charming, and romantic.

Newswire: Veep’s Chris Addison to helm Dirty Rotten Scoundrels remake
The Thick Of It’s Chris Addison won over American viewers from behind the camera as a director on Veep. Now Variety reports he’s branching out into feature films, beginning with that Dirty Rotten Scoundrels remake we’ve already heard so much about. The new film has swapped the masculine rivalry of the original, which starred Steve Martin and Michael Caine, for the oneupswomanship of Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson. And to really drive home the gender-swapped angle, the remake of a remake (Marlon Brando and David Niven played the O.G. swindlers in “Bedtime Story”) has been titled Nasty Women. Hathaway and Wilson will play the central grifting duo—one posh, one not. They’ll compete to hoodwink some “naïve tech prodigy,” a role that has Zach Woods written all over it. Relatively untested scribe Jac Schaeffer is writing the film for MGM, but there’s currently no...
