Les Jeux de l'amour et de la guerre

This 3-Hour War Epic With John Wayne, Sean Connery & Henry Fonda Is One Of The Best D-Day Movies Ever
Image
The Longest Day is an epic portrayal of the D-Day landings from American, British, French, and German perspectives. A star-studded cast including John Wayne, Sean Connery, and Henry Fonda brought the historic event to life. Directed by three filmmakers, the film balances historical accuracy with personal accounts for a captivating experience.

John Wayne, Sean Connery, and Henry Fonda headlined an all-star ensemble cast in The Longest Day, one of the greatest cinematic portrayals of the D-Day landings. The Allied invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944, was the largest seaborne invasion in history. Since then, filmmakers have been trying to recreate the visceral terror of D-Day on the big screen. The D-Day landings were chronicled in Budd Boettichers Red Ball Express in 1952, Arthur Hillers The Americanization of Emily in 1964, Samuel Fullers The Big Red One in 1980, and, of course, Steven Spielbergs Saving Private Ryan in 1998.

But those movies usually depict the Normandy...

Jim Mahoney, PR To Sinatra, McQueen, Gable, Explores 60 Years Of Hollywood In Memoir: “It Was About Taming The Lion”
Image
Jim Mahoney was one of Hollywood’s go-to guys. He spent 60+ years in public relations, guiding the images of Clark Gable, Frank Sinatra, Steve McQueen, Bob Hope, Johnny Carson, Lee Marvin, Burt Lancaster, Christie Brinkley, Peggy Lee, and hundreds more.

He was on the front lines when Frank Sinatra Jr. was kidnapped, and was at the party at Peter Lawford’s house the night Marilyn Monroe died. He was also there with the Rat Pack in Las Vegas.

Now age 95, Mahoney has captured all of that in a memoir, Get Mahoney!: A Hollywood Insider’s Memoir. “Get Mahoney!” was the phrase often used when stars and their handlers knew trouble was brewing and needed to keep their names out of the press. Mahoney was good at his job, and frequently referred to himself as a better “suppress” agent than press agent.

“It was about ‘taming the lion’ – both the press and the clients themselves,...

Stage Fright (1950)
Image
Alfred Hitchcock puts Jane Wyman in harm’s way, as she tries to rescue her unworthy boyfriend Richard Todd from a murder charge. Is Jane proving her love, or are both of them being manipulated by a scheming actress, Marlene Dietrich? This is the movie in which Hitch inflicts a ‘frump complex’ on Ms. Wyman — she looks demoralized whenever she shares the screen with Dietrich. It’s also the movie that ponders the cinematic concept of ‘The Lying Flashback,’ which made perfect sense to Hitchcock but frustrated his audience. Also starring Michael Wilding, Alastair Sim and a cherry-picked list of English acting royalty.

Schitt's Creek: 10 Saddest Things About Alexis
Catherine O'Hara, Eugene Levy, Annie Murphy, and Dan Levy in Schitt's Creek (2015)
Of all of the characters that appear in Schitt’s Creek, Alexis is the one that shows the most remarkable and significant growth. She goes from being a very spoiled and not very self-aware brat to a sophisticated PR person who recognizes just how important her family is to her. It’s quite remarkable, really, and she is one of those characters that grows on the audience as the seasons go on, even if she's not always consistent.

Despite her bubbly personality (and some hilarious moments), however, there are some things about her that are really rather sad, adding yet another layer of complexity to this fascinating character.

Schitt's Creek: 10 Saddest Things About Johnny
Eugene Levy at an event for For Your Consideration (2006)
Eugene Levy has turned a certain type of role into an art form. Almost without exception, the men that he plays are earnest and well-meaning, and they often seem a little confused about the world that they live in. With his turn as Johnny Rose in the hit series Schitt’s Creek, he has brought this type of character into absolute perfection, and there's a case to be made that he is also the funniest character in the show.

It’s impossible not to love Johnny, even though his awkwardness can sometimes be almost painful to watch. Despite the fact that he’s actually quite a funny character, there’s also a lot about Johnny that is more than a little sad.

Lily Collins in Emily in Paris (2020)
This Unforgettable Satc Character Inspired Lucas Bravo in Emily in Paris
Lily Collins in Emily in Paris (2020)
It's impossible not to compare Netflix's Emily in Paris to Sex and the City. Both created by Darren Star, the lead of each series is a fashion-obsessed career woman with big dreams and an even bigger wardrobe. Legendary costume designer Patricia Field is responsible for dressing the main characters in lavish designer clothing. And the cities they're each filmed in, Paris and New York, bustle with possibility. But there's one other attribute that Emily and Sarah Jessica Parker's Carrie Bradshaw share: They both crush on annoyingly attractive and complicated men. Which is why it's time to discuss Lucas Bravo, a man who hope to see plenty more of in season two. In Emily in...

Emily in Paris Is Officially Returning For Season 2! See the Very-French Announcement
Lily Collins
The 20-something-year old social media marketer we love to hate and hate to love isn't going anywhere.  On Wednesday, Nov. 11, Netflix confirmed that Lily Collins will step back into her designer shoes to play Emily Cooper for season two of Emily in Paris. To share the news, the streaming service doctored up a fictional letter from Savoir, the luxury agency Emily works for, in which her boss, Sylvie Grateau (Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu) informs the U.S. office that they'll need Emily's assistance no matter how annoying they find her. "Despite her overconfident manner and lack of prior experience in luxury goods marketing, she has nonetheless managed to charm some of our hard-to-impress...

“Emily in Paris” has been renewed for Season 2 at Netflix, the streaming service said Wednesday.

The first season of the Lily Collins comedy launched Oct. 2.

Drama Review: Penance (2012) by Kiyoshi Kurosawa
Image
Based on the homonymous novel by Kanae Minato (also the author of “Confessions“) and featuring the crème de la crème of Japanese actresses along with Teruyuki Kagawa, “Penance” also served as an “experiment” for the style and aesthetics Kiyoshi Kurosawa later implemented on “Creepy“

“Penance” is screening on Mubi

15 years ago, Emiri (the Japanese rendition of Emily), an elementary school student from a rich family transferred to the small town of Ueda, and soon became close friends with four other girls, Sae, Maki, Akiko and Yuka. The girls always played together, occasionally in each other’s house, but at one point, after a series of antique dolls were stolen from each of the girl’s houses, they experienced a true tragedy. An unknown man came to their school after- hours, while they were playing at the courtyard, and posing as a ventilation technician, took Emiri away from the rest, supposedly to help him.

Is It Good or Is It Quarantine?
Robert Cornthwaite, Margaret Sheridan, Douglas Spencer, and Kenneth Tobey in La Chose d'un autre monde (1951)
Maybe it's born with it. Maybe it's quarantine. We don't know about you, but we're pretty sure we've watched about 95 percent of what's available on Netflix since mid-March a.k.a. when stay-at-home orders were put into place because of the coronavirus pandemic. With nothing to do and nowhere to go, binge-watching served as the perfect distraction. And in the seven months since quarantine began, more than a few TV shows have managed to become A Thing. You can't scroll through your Twitter feed without seeing a meme-related to it. And your parents bring it up during one of your daily FaceTime chats. You know what we mean. The latest example of this phenomenon is Emily in Paris, which...

Unpopular Opinion: Emily in Paris Is Exactly the Escapism I Don't Want Right Now
Image
The reviews of Emily in Paris that have been positive have mostly focused on calling the show light, sweet escapism. For me, Netflix's fish-out-of-water comedy is exactly the type of escapism that doesn't make me feel any better - in fact, it frustrates me even more. In 2020, a frothy confection full of "charming" selfish characters doesn't help me escape from the real world. Escapism, to me, is entertainment that offers us a better alternative to the real world, rather than one that's just airily putting a gloss on it.

Emily in Paris is so obsessed with its aesthetic that it fails the most important part of storytelling: giving us characters we can root for.

At first glance, Emily in Paris looked like it should be my kind of show. It's a light comedy with a girl-power/rom-com gloss, full of enviable fashion and even more enviable Parisian views. So why,...

Lily Collins in Emily in Paris (2020)
Emily in Paris Review: Family Affair
Lily Collins in Emily in Paris (2020)
Emily is not making the best decisions.

Emily in Paris Season 1 Episode 8 took our heroine out of the city, while Emily in Paris Season 1 Episode 9 made her the butt of many jokes.

We'll start with the adventures in the chateau because those were the best scenes of Emily in Paris Season 1.

It's hard to understand what goes through Emily's mind at the best of times, but embarking on a trip to Camille's family home with Gabriel in tow was not the best move.

Indeed, Emily thought Gabriel would not be tagging along, but the hot chef always seems to pop up when our favorite Chicago implant least expects it.

The humor during the trip was on point, and I cringed for Emily when it emerged that she slept with the wrong brother of Camille.

Still, Camille wanted her to get close to a brother, but she didn't define which brother,...

In Case You Were Wondering, Emily in Paris's Resident Hot Chef Lucas Bravo Is Single
Image
As Gabriel on Emily in Paris, Lucas Bravo's love life is extremely complicated. Between his girlfriend Camille and the titular Emily, it's hard to know whom he should end up with - although we certainly have some thoughts. In real life, things are decidedly less complicated, as Lucas recently confirmed that he is currently single.

If you're wondering whether he'd date a costar, he has a rule against that. "Once you step on set, it's a workplace, and I want to keep it professional. I mean, you never know what can happen, but I really try as much as possible to focus on the story we have to tell and the performance and the character," Lucas told Glamour. As for if he'd date a fan, well his answer to that seems promising. "I don't really have fans, so I don't know," he told the outlet. After the release of Emily in Paris,...

Lily Collins Details the ‘Crazy Whirlwind’ of Leaving ‘Emily in Paris’ Set for ‘Mank’ Rehearsals
Image
Lily Collins’ Netflix series “Emily in Paris” shot to the top of the streaming giant’s most-watched TV chart in the days after its October 2 premiere, and it’s not the only Netflix hit the actress is expected to have before the end of the year. Collins stars opposite Gary Oldman in David Fincher’s Netflix original film “Mank,” the director’s highly anticipated first film since 2014’s “Gone Girl.” Having two big Netflix projects debut back to back is appropriate considering Collins worked on “Emily in Paris” and “Mank” at the same time. Juggling both projects required Collins to leave Paris on the weekends for just 24 hours to attend “Mank” rehearsals with Fincher in Los Angeles.

“The process of how I even got involved with ‘Mank’ was crazy,” Collins told Variety in a recent interview. “I put myself on tape the week before I left for Paris, sent the tape in,...

Emily in Paris Review: Ringarde
Juliette Binoche and Romain Duris in Paris (2008)
Things are getting messy.

Emily continued to pursue Gabriel on Emily in Paris Season 1 Episode 6 and Emily in Paris Season 1 Episode 7 and came to a stunning decision about the relationship.

While it's hard to call it a relationship when Gabriel is still very much in one with Camile, it's becoming clear that he's emotionally over his longtime girlfriend.

From the moment he laid eyes on Emily, he's wanted to get closer to her.

The cracks are starting to appear in his relationship with Camile, and from the outside, it might look like money is driving them apart.

Gabriel is a proud man who wants to achieve success based on his merits. Camile trying to get him to accept the money from her family could seriously derail their relationship.

If Gabriel accepted the money, he would feel indebted to her family, and that's not something he would be able to live with.

Emily in Paris Review: Sexy or Sexist?
Lily Collins in Emily in Paris (2020)
If Emily thought working in Paris would be drama-free, she had another thing coming.

Emily in Paris Season 1 Episode 2 and Emily in Paris Season 1 Episode 3 found our titular lead embroiled in some gnarly situations.

But at least she and Doug are finally over. Beyond his good looks, he lacked personality and didn't fully support Emily working in Paris.

The fact that he had to purchase a passport proves that he doesn't venture much further than Chicago. Emily is a fiery young woman who speaks her mind, so it's somewhat surprising she stayed with him for so long.

Maybe I'm biased because Gabriel lives in Paris, but he and Emily seem like a much better match.

There was an instant attraction between them, and their chemistry has been undeniable. Even Mindy, someone who has known Emily for a few days, picked up on it.

The issue plaguing Emily and Gabriel, however,...

Lily Collins Explains the Difference Between Emily in Paris and Sex and the City

Oh, to be young, in love and get paid to work in Paris. Is that so much to ask for? In 2020, the answer is a big fat yes. But luckily for us dreamers, a new Netflix show allows us to escape and live that fantasy for 10 episodes. Starring Lily Collins as its titular character, Emily in Paris is a delightful, easy binge that'll have fans of Gossip Girl, The Devil Wear's Prada and Sex and the City immediately asking their group text, "Wait, am I literally Emily?" Anyone would certainly want a taste of her life. A remarkably self-assured and positive woman in her twenties, Emily galivants from the midwest to the City of Lights, where, by day, she thinks up witty social media strategy for a...

Lily Collins Says There Are ‘Sex and the City’ Easter Eggs in ‘Emily in Paris’
Image
Before the world went into lockdown, when Americans were free to travel internationally, Lily Collins was crisscrossing continents. The Golden Globe-nominated actor was shooting her new Netflix series “Emily in Paris” in the City of Lights, as well as working in Los Angeles on David Fincher’s “Mank” — a drama about the making of “Citizen Kane.”

In “Emily,” premiering on Netflix on Oct. 2, she stars as the title character, a young fashion marketing exec who is transferred from Chicago to Paris, where she doesn’t know anyone and can’t speak French. Slowly, she finds new friends and, of course, romance.

“You can see it in the first episode that Emily doesn’t have to change who she is in order to be ultimately embraced and understood,” Collins, 31, says on Thursday’s episode of the Variety and iHeart podcast

“The Big Ticket.” “She’s obvious; she’s loud in her...

Jewel Previews ‘Pieces of You’ Reissue With Unreleased ‘You Were Meant for Me’ Demo
Image
Jewel has shared a previously unreleased demo of her 1996 hit “You Were Meant for Me,” set to appear on the 25th-anniversary edition of Pieces of You, out November 20th.

The demo (understandably) boasts a much rawer feel than the final product, with the woodwinds and soft drums stripped away to leave just Jewel’s voice and guitar. Joining Jewel on the demo is co-writer Steve Poltz, who provides a bit of back-up as they sing, “Dreams last so long, even after you’re gone/And I know that you love...

Pretty Little Liars: Hanna's Transformation Over The Years (In Pictures)
Ashley Benson
Played by Ashley Benson, Hanna Marin is the fashionista on Pretty Little Liars who has clever comments ready for any situation and who falls for bad boy Caleb Rivers (Tyler Blackburn). She's a big part of the action at any given moment, whether the storylines revolve around her love life or the many mysteries of Rosewood.

Hanna's life was on an upward track by the show's finale, but it didn't always seem like she would get a happy ending, as she suffered with so many problems over the years. Of course, she also had to deal with being stalked by "A" and all of the tragedies that came along with that. Hanna definitely went through a major transformation from the pilot to the finale.

Netflix has already staked a claim to a large chunk of Spooky Season with its Netflix and Chills line-up, but horror hold-outs need not panic. The streaming service released its full list of new October titles today, and there's plenty to peruse that won't keep you up at night. Emily in Paris: New Trailer Promises High Fashion, Lots of Humor
Lily Collins in Emily in Paris (2020)
The long road to the screen for Emily in Paris is almost over.

Netflix on Wednesday dropped a new trailer for the series, and it gave us our first glimpse at Emily's work life, as well as her relationships.

What is evident from the clip is that Emily is highly opinionated and is not afraid to speak her mind, which seeming rubs her co-workers the wrong way.

Whether she will be able to make it work in Paris is up for debate, especially when she is branded dramatic.

Emily also seems to be in a complicated relationship with her hot neighbor, and we're not complaining.

Lily Collins plays Emily, an ambitious twenty-something marketing executive from Chicago, unexpectedly lands her dream job in Paris when her company acquires a French luxury marketing company — and she is tasked with revamping their social media strategy.

‘68 Whiskey’ Canceled By Paramount Network After One Season
Image
Exclusive: Paramount Network has opted not to pick up a second season of comedic drama 68 Whiskey, an adaptation of the Israeli TV series Charlie Golf One.

The show, from Imagine Television Studios and CBS TV Studios, was well received with a 88% fresh Rotten Tomatoes rating. It also got off to a strong TV ratings start, with the January 15 premiere drawing 2 million viewers in Live+3 Nielsen numbers to mark the most-watched cable drama series premiere in the metric since November 2018. Following the promising premiere the ratings slipped, however, and overall the series ranked outside of the Top 100 in total viewers, adults 18-49 and 25-54 year-to-date (Live+3).

68 Whiskey‘s cancellation leaves powerhouse Yellowstone as Paramount Network’s only current original scripted series. The net’s dramedy Emily In Paris recently relocated to Netflix. Paramount Network earlier this year gave a series order to drama Coyote starring Michael Chiklis.

Based on the blockbuster success of Yellowstone,...

By Doug Oswald

Rock Hudson and George Peppard are WWII commandos in “Tobruk,” available on Blu-ray by Kino Lorber. Hudson is Major Donald Craig, a Canadian prisoner of war on board a German transport ship anchored off an Italian controlled port in North Africa sometime in late 1942. A group of frogmen surface near the ship and sneak on board with silencers fixed to their guns in order to kidnap Craig. The frogmen are led by Captain Bergman (George Peppard) who is part of a team of German commandos. They take Craig to a German airfield and fly him to a desert landing strip. They’re unexpectedly greeted by a group of British soldiers led by Colonel Harker (Nigel Green). It turns out Bergman is the leader of German Jews who fled Nazi Germany for obvious reasons and are now part of...

Comic-Con 2020 ‘At Home’ Sunday Schedule
Image
To use the words of prophet and frequent convention attendee Hunter S. Thompson, when the going gets weird, the weird turn pro. This year, the professional weirdness of Comic-Con has taken a twist, as the four-day event will take place exclusively online.

To their credit, organizers are trying to replicate the commercialized fan-friendly confines of the San Diego Convention Center as much as possible: there is the traditional souvenir book featuring a pretty sweet drawing of Ray Bradbury on a T. Rex on the cover that is available for free .pdf download (and featuring click-through advertisements!), and you can print your own badge (sponsored by Amazon Prime Video!) to wear as you sit in front of your screen at home. The Comic-Con homepage also will take you to an online Exhibit Hall, where there will be interactive exhibits and events offered by vendors.

There are literally hundreds of panels that...

‘Emily in Paris’ Moves From Paramount Network to Netflix
Image
The upcoming Paramount Network comedy series “Emily in Paris” is headed to Netflix.

Variety has learned that the series will debut exclusively on Netflix this fall rather than the basic cabler. The series is created by and executive produced by Darren Star with Lily Collins starring as the titular Emily in addition to producing.

“Emily in Paris” was one of few scripted series set to air on Paramount Network in the near future. The network’s only current scripted original is “Yellowstone,” which debuted its third season back in June with a fourth already ordered. Earlier this year, Paramount Network aired the Afghanistan war dramedy “68 Whiskey,” which is still awaiting word on a second season. The network is also expected to air the Michael Chiklis-led drama “Coyote” this year, though no premiere date has been set at the time of this publishing.

Other scripted shows currently set up...

‘Emily In Paris’ Picked Up By Netflix; Darren Star’s Comedy Series Starring Lily Collins Moves To Streamer From Paramount Network
Image
It’s official — the new romantic comedy series Emily In Paris — created, written and executive produced by Darren Star — has landed at Netflix. The half-hour series, originally developed and greenlighted by Paramount Network, will be released exclusively on the streaming service this fall. It is produced by MTV Studios.

The move had been in the works for several months and was in its final stages when ViacomCBS’ Entertainment & Youth Group last week announced an overall deal with Star. The Entertainment & Youth Group includes Paramount Network, MTV Studios as well as TV Land, which airs Star’s popular comedy series Younger.

Emily In Paris, starring and produced by Lily Collins, was ordered in fall 2018 as an anchor of a planned female-themed dramedy night on Paramount Network that the comedy was to share with Younger and First Wives Club. The idea was shelved a few months later when a decision was made...

No specifics about Mandel’s death have been revealed.
