The title of a novel, series, or film is often used to grab the attention of its target audience; after all, it's one of the first ways the writer can communicate with potential buyers as to what is to be expected in the narrative. People think of titles like Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods and can guess from those words alone what is going to happen throughout the film.
On the other hand, some Japanese anime titles are outrageous and meant to stand out in long lists of seasonal anime. These titles are often far longer than what readers are accustomed to, feeling like they're nearly as long to read as the show is to watch. For the most part, these overly long titles come from light novels and their anime adaptations, which require attention-grabbing titles to secure readers. Long anime titles sometimes feel like a gimmick or silly novelty,...

Red Ranger Becomes an Adventurer in Another World is an isekai anime inspired by the Super Sentai and Power Rangers series. The story revolves around Kizuna Red, a Sentai Ranger who is whisked away to another fantasy world after defeating the big bad of their season's show. Red becomes an adventurer in this fantasy world and works alongside Idora, Princess Teltina, and Lowji.
The anime series weaves together isekai genre tropes, such as gratuitous fan service, adventurer ranks, and fish-out-of-water moments, with tokusatsu tropes. But while this is a unique take on the isekai genre, its reliance on tokusatsu tropes makes one wonder why the series was an isekai anime rather than a traditional anime take/adaptation of tokusatsu properties. This is especially true, considering the central Sentai team is leaning heavily on these tropes.

It’s hard to believe that nearly a year ago next month we learned that a broadcast network had not only discussed the possibility of putting a brand new daytime drama in development but that it had been having ongoing conversations over such a thing for quite a few years.
That network, CBS, formally announced a little show called “The Gates” on Wednesday, March 6, 2024, which would follow the lives of a wealthy Black family in a posh, gated community.
Created by veteran soap opera writer Michele Val Jean, who would also serve as showrunner, executive producer and head writer, the new soap would be produced by the CBS Studios/NAACP production venture, led by Sheila Ducksworth, in partnership with P&g Studios, a division of Procter & Gamble.

In recent anime seasons, the Isekai genre has absolutely exploded in popularity. More popular series than can be easily counted have been Isekai series and it feels like there's at least one or two every new season these days. In fact, the genre has become so crowded that major publisher Kadokawa has banned Isekai stories from iterations of its story contests. Still, despite the popularity of the Isekai genre, non-anime fans may be unfamiliar with the genre, though the concept itself should be pretty familiar. The Bam Smack Pow team is here to help explain the genre and name of the standout series.
The word Isekai itself is the Japanese word for "Another World" or "Alternate World." On the whole, Isekai anime could be considered as occupying the same genre as non-anime Portal Fantasy books, shows and movies like Narnia, Alice in Wonderland, the John Carter of Mars series (and...

Isekai is one of the many genres that anime can fall into. Usually, these series follow some sort of wish-fulfillment as characters are transported to another world they have to adapt to. While this has brought forth beloved anime like Sword Art Online and Log Horizon, not every isekai release is a success.
Unfortunately, some isekai anime have high hopes but simply couldn't stick the landing. Perhaps their characters were unlikable, or perhaps the plot was flawed from conception. These anime may have interesting concepts, but they fail in execution. At least there will always be more isekai anime to look forward to.

Quick LinksThe Rise and Fall of Soap OperasHope for the Future of Soap Operas?
Soap operas are some of the oldest and most reliable institutions of television dramas. We all know the hallmarks. There's extreme melodrama, romance, overacting, implausible storylines, etc. They were some of the original guilty pleasure shows. Their daily airings, coupled with decades-long lifespans, mean that many of the big-name operas have aired thousands and thousands of episodes. In recent years, soap operas have mostly died out in popularity, with only a few remaining on the broadcast networks. As the last new entry debuted in 1999, it seemed unlikely that we'd ever see a debut title again.
But CBS still has faith in one of television's oldest hallmarks. On February 24, they will premiere the brand-new soap opera Beyond the Gates. It's set to run in the daytime alongside soap stalwarts The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful.

Jennifer Lien's star was on the rise before she was cut from Star Trek: Voyager at the beginning of the series' fourth season. Not only had she been a soap opera actress, appearing as Hannah Moore in Another World, but she voiced Elle on the Men in Black series. While she had some good scenes in Voyager, nothing could really be classified as a stand out unless you count her time in "Warlord." It wasn't until she was cast as Davina in American History X that her true talent came out.
Gone was the meek and quiet Kes from Voyager. In her place was the wife of a paroled neo-Nazi, Derek, a woman who, despite the abuse she suffered, stood up to him and tried to give back as good as she got. In fact, there wasn't even the slighest hint of Kes in Lien's portrayal as Davina.

When it comes to genre diversity, anime has plenty to offer to all kinds of fans, covering a broad range of classic genre categories from romance to action-adventure to horror and psychological thriller. Yet, on top of the genres prominent in all fiction, anime also has unique categories of stories intrinsic to the medium - one of the most popular of such distinctive sub-genres being isekai. Isekai, literally translating to “another world,” is both a genre and a plot mechanism encountered all over modern anime - to the point of being considered one of the medium’s most saturated sub-genres. From manga to anime to light novels and video games, tales of heroes traveling to parallel fantasy worlds from their mundane reality are almost inescapable in contemporary Japanese media.
