“Better Days” is Hong Kong’s first Oscar submission to be nominated for best international feature film since 1993, but its nod has only inflamed political tensions at home. Many members of the Hong Kong public believe that “Better Days” does not represent them.
Although it was directed by Hong Kong’s Derek Tsang, produced by Jojo Yuet-chun Hui, and counts Hong Konger Lam Wing Sum among its three main screenwriters, “Better Days” features over a hundred Chinese cast members and one Thai, but no Hong Kong actors. It also unfolds in Mandarin, not Cantonese. Adapted from an eponymous Chinese novel, it is set in China’s Chongqing. Its examination of schoolyard bullying is set against the backdrop of the “gaokao,” the mainland’s brutal college entrance examination that doesn’t exist in Hong Kong.
“Even if ‘Better Days’ wins, I won’t feel much… it’s too far removed from the people of Hong Kong.

In a spectacular Marvel twist, the first Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings trailer confirms a rumor that the film’s director, Destin Daniel Cretton dropped last year: the Mandarin is Shang-Chi’s father.
Typical for the MCU’s shared universe, this plays out well on multiple levels. In the original comics, Shang-Chi’s father was none other than Fu Manchu. Fu Manchu was created by Englishman Sax Rohmer with his pulp fiction book The Mystery of Doctor Fu-Manchu in 1913. It was a stark, racist portrayal of Asians, and Rohmer capitalized upon the ‘Yellow Peril’ xenophobia of the time by milking his Fu Manchu character for a long running serial of over a dozen books. Fu Manchu became the West’s preeminent orientalist villain, a ruthless mad scientist evil genius with a signature mustache. The character was depicted in dozens of films, always portrayed by Caucasian actors with...

Fox’s “The Masked Dancer” concluded Season 1 in front of 3.1 million viewers, or about 400,000 more than last week’s penultimate episode got. But that doesn’t mean Fox finished first in primetime ratings last night. That distinction went to NBC, which won another Wednesday with its “Chicago Shows.” Fox actually didn’t even finish second in total viewers — CBS did. ABC aired mostly reruns last night. Also Read: 'The Masked Dancer' Season 1 Winner Revealed: Was It Cotton Candy, Sloth or Tulip? NBC was first in ratings with a 0.9 rating/6 share in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic and in total viewers with an average of 6.7 million, according to preliminary numbers. “Chicago Med” at 8 p.m. posted a 0.9/6 and 7.4 million viewers. At 9, “Chicago Fire” put up a 0.9/6 and 7.1 million viewers. “Chicago P.D.” at 10 received a 0.8/5 and 5.7 million viewers. Fox was second in ratings with a 0.6/3 and third in viewers with 2.9 million.

Olympic gold medalist gymnast Gabby Douglas is the first-ever winner of “The Masked Dancer,” having scored the show’s diamond mask trophy after being revealed as Cotton Candy.
Douglas was victorious despite facing off with two trained dancers in the finale. Runner-up Sloth turned out to be “Dancing with the Stars’” Maksim Chmerkovskiy. And in third place was Tulip, who was revealed to be Mackenzie Ziegler (“Dance Moms”).
Douglas was unmasked after dancing to “This Is Me,” by Kesha. The panelists were torn between whether the Cotton Candy was a gymnast or an ice skater. Paula Abdul figured out it was Gabby Douglas, while Ashley Tisdale named her teammate Simone Biles. Brian Austin Green thought it was Tara Lapinski, Ken Jeong named Michelle Kwan.
Among Douglas’ notable moments on the show came before her first dance, when (dressed as Cotton Candy) she was suspended high in an acrobatic ring but...

Above: Debra Winger and James Hong in Black Widow. For two years, I sent e-mails back and forth with legendary character actor James Hong trying to set-up this interview. Invariably, something would always waylay us: shooting on a film, pre-production on another, or we’d agree to chat on the phone to set the finer details of time and place, then life would get in the way (for one—or both—of us). It’s nobody’s fault, really. The man, he works. But, finally, late on a Monday afternoon in February of this year—Presidents’ Day—we met to speak at length. Five days later, Hong turned 91.We originally met nearly a decade before, following a screening of a ribald, late seventies sex comedy entitled—unapologetically—Teen Lust (1979), which Hong directed. In spite of its disreputable sub-genre, it read to me as a salacious send-up of suburbia and a surreal,...

The Goonies, a movie that introduced us to Sloth, Chunk, the Truffle Shuffle and the first documented instance of Joey Pants’ surprising toupee reveals, will celebrate its 35th anniversary this year. A project surely blessed by the dream team of Richard Donner, Steven Spielberg and Chris Columbus in the mid-80s, The Goonies has lost none of its charm in the decades since its release.
Despite the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, industry vets are still finding a way to reach audiences under social distancing and lockdown measures, and The Goonies will definitely have an outlet to begin it’s 35th birthday early, thanks to Beauty and the Beast and Avenue 5 star Josh Gad, who is bringing the main cast of the film back together for a reunion special.

Warning: Big ol' spoilers for Shazam! below!
The selection of DC superhero films that have come out of Warner Bros. over the last decade have been hit or miss, to say the least. While Christopher Nolan's much-lauded Dark Knight trilogy made great use of Gotham's gritty atmosphere, the studio's subsequent attempts to re-create the magic - Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, Justice League - have fallen flat. Fortunately, Patty Jenkins's Wonder Woman and James Wan's Aquaman have leaned into the goofier, more human sides of their characters, and are unafraid of splashing a little color and humor into their stories.
This month's Shazam!, directed by David F. Sandberg, is no different, resulting in a charming, heartfelt superhero outing that's simultaneously thrilling, sharp, and even a little bit spooky. (The Seven Deadly Sins monsters attacking a conference room full of people? Nightmares.) But as tonally different...

In particular, Zachary Levi and Mark Strong are great as the titular hero and his nemesis, respectively.

In a rare move from the notoriously secretive streaming service, Netflix has revealed the list of their fastest-viewed TV shows. It turns out that a whopping 8.4 million users have watched at least one entire season of a show within the first 24 hours of its release – a process known as “binge-racing.” The company announced that this practice has been common since the beginning of the service but has really taken off in recent years. In fact, from 2013 to 2016, the number of binge-racers increased by 20 times.
As for the list itself, unsurprisingly, most of the series here are half-hour comedies, which are easier to consume quickly. However, there are a few longer dramas included, too. Notably, big hitters like Stranger Things, Orange is the New Black and House of Cards all make an appearance. The winner of the lot, however, is Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life.

It’s time to add a new word to your lexicon. We all know about binge-watching, but binge-racing — as defined by the wordsmiths at Netflix — is watching the entire season of a show within 24 hours. A new video looks beyond Fincher at the Evil Men Do
Sin, as defined by most major religions and moral institutions, is as old as man. It is inherent to our nature, because ultimately sin is self-serving, and at the end of the day we are all self-serving creatures. Wrath, pride, sloth, lust, envy, gluttony, greed — as opposed to the Ten Commandments of Christianity which include distinct acts like adultery and murder, the seven deadly sins are things of which most all of us are guilty of multiple times over. We’ve all committed them, even on a minor scale. Ever think someone has a nicer car than you? Envy. Ever gotten a touch of road rage? Wrath. Ever hit the snooze button more than once? Sloth.
These are petty examples to be sure, but they illustrate how commonplace the seven deadly sins are in our daily lives, and thus they prove why the seven deadly sins...

Back in January, fans got their first look at Toho's first ever Godzilla anime movie, which is slated for release in Japan later this year. Earlier this month, Netflix picked up the streaming rights to this movie, which will be released theatrically in Japan before debuting worldwide on the popular streaming service. Today we have a new poster for this highly-anticipated anime movie, which doesn't give us a glimpse at Godzilla himself, but we do get to to see this futuristic world. We also have new concept art and the official synopsis.
The last summer of the 20th century. On that day, the human race realized that they were not the only ruler of the planet earth. The emergence of gigantic monsters "kaiju" and the ultimate existence that even can destroy the kaijus, Godzilla. After half-century of the war against the kaijus, the human race repeatedly defeated and decided to escape from the earth.

Machinima and Hasbro have released an exciting new trailer their great-looking new animated web series Transformers: Combiner Wars. This sucker was made for the hardcore fans of the original series of the '80s, and it looks like it's going to deliver something that fans are going to love.
We've already seen four prelude episodes for the series that you can check out here featuring the characters Optimus Prime, Victorion, Starscream, and Windblade. Those were cool and all, but this trailer for the actual series is so much more exciting!
Taking place 40 years after the great war on Earth, the eight episode digital series introduces new lore and all-new characters that, combined with the characters fans have known for decades, will bring the Transformers storytelling in a new direction. The Autobots and Decepticons have disbanded and returned to Cybertron. With the days of Optimus Prime and Megatron over, Cybertron is now ruled by a triumvirate.

We return with another edition of the Indie Spotlight, highlighting recent independent horror news sent our way. This week’s feature includes a trailer for The Cabining, details on All Hallows’ Eve, and much more:
The Cabining: “Todd and Bruce, a hapless screenwriting team, get one last shot at success thanks to Todd’s wealthy stepdad, Serge. If they pen a worthy horror script, Serge will fund the entire project. But there is one condition – the script must be complete in two weeks. With the deadline looming and no fresh ideas, Todd and Bruce head to Shangri-La, a serene artist’s retreat, with the hope that the peace and company of fellow artists will inspire greatness… or, failing greatness, at least enough for straight-to-dvd. Shangri-La proves to be anything but serene, as the artists die off one by one, seemingly by accident. Bruce convinces Todd to soak in this...

(Claude Chabrol, 1958/59, Eureka!, 12)
Coined in 1957 by the French journalist François Giroud to describe a rebellious generation of young French people polled by L'Express, the term "nouvelle vague" was rapidly applied to an amorphous group of innovative film‑makers, the most vociferously self-publicising of whom were the critics working for Cahiers du Cinéma, who embraced "la politique des auteurs".
The first of them to direct a feature film was Claude Chabrol, co-author in 1957 of the first book on the Cahiers hero Alfred Hitchcock. Chabrol used his wife's windfall inheritance to make what has been called the first new wave movie, Le beau Serge, followed immediately by a companion piece, Les cousins. Both were shot in a naturalistic manner by key nouvelle vague cameraman Henri Decaë, and star Jean-Claude Brialy and Gérard Blain.
In Le beau Serge, Brialy plays a Parisian who goes back to his home village to save the life...

“The megalomaniac differs from the narcissist by the fact that he wishes to be powerful rather than charming, and seeks to be feared rather than loved. To this type belong many lunatics and most of the great men of history.”
Bertrand Russell
Why Is It Always About You? The Seven Deadly Sins of Narcissism:
1. Shamelessness: Shame is the feeling that lurks beneath all unhealthy narcissism, and the inability to process shame in healthy ways.
2. Magical thinking: Narcissists see themselves as perfect, using distortion and illusion known as magical thinking. They also use projection to dump shame onto others.
3. Arrogance: A narcissist who is feeling deflated may reinflate by diminishing, debasing, or degrading somebody else.
4. Envy: A narcissist may secure a sense of superiority in the face of another person’s ability by using contempt to minimize the other person.

Cast members have been styled as the seven deadly sins and have recalled their series four bad behaviour in seven YouTube videos which also launch the new Made in Chelsea channel.
"As they come face-to-face, we'll find out the cast's real feelings about certain situations - analysing the arguments, love triangles, cheating and excessive spending by relating each situation to one of the famous deadly sins," said producers.

A starry cast and a knowing air can't add depth to Peter Morgan's tale of blackmail, infidelity and dodgy deals
Peter Morgan made his reputation with remarkably perceptive screenplays about British people, mostly real-life ones, going through bad patches in their careers at home (The Damned United, The Queen) and abroad (Frost/Nixon, The Last King of Scotland), and encountering some rather odd people. More recently, however, he's moved on to a larger canvas involving the mystical and metaphysical, and the results have been less satisfactory. Hereafter, which Steven Spielberg produced and Clint Eastwood directed, began with an astonishing re-creation of the south-east Asian tsunami, then proceeded with flat-footed banality to tell the parallel stories of three people from different countries (a French TV reporter, an American blue-collar worker and a south London schoolboy) mysteriously linked by their near-death experiences.
His new film, 360, directed by Fernando Meirelles, takes him...

I haven’t watched (professional) wrestling since age 4. I remember a faux gay wedding making the news a couple years back, but on Monday night, we arrived in the ring in true form. Bisexual wrestler Orlando Jordan hit the ring as part of Spike TV’s Tna Impact. Openly bisexual since 2006, this was his first major outing on television. You can watch the episode at Spike.TV. Kudos to him, Spike, and the WWE – it was handled with as much grace as anything in professional wrestling.

One of the loveliest freeform ideas to find patronage and popularity in the New Wavey 1960s was the omnibus film, a rarely cohesive but always tempting quasi-genre defined as a collection of exclusively commissioned short films. These projects usually began with a general theme but were always most interested in gathering the generation's coolest hotshot filmmakers and encouraging them to whack off and make their special kind of havoc, but in compressed form. The aesthetics of the genre are questionable -- never is the entirety of an omnibus very satisfying -- but its smash-up ranginess of conflicting styles and potpourri perspectives make the movies irresistible. (Favorites of any connoisseur would include 1962's "The Seven Deadly Sins," 1963's "RoGoPaG," and 1969's "Love and Anger," all of which feature the era's most promiscuous omnibus-er, Jean-Luc Godard.)
