Scatena & Rosner Films is rolling out Grammy and Tony winner Jhett Tolentino’s film directorial debut “Asian Persuasion” across North American theaters, with a digital/VOD bow to follow. The romantic comedy, penned by Mike Ang, toplines “Hook” alum Dante Basco and Filipino star Kc Concepcion (“Boy Golden: Shoot to Kill”).

The film, which snagged the Audience Award at the 2023 Soho International Film Festival, follows an underachiever who concocts an elaborate scheme to dodge alimony payments to his fashion-exec ex-wife. Latanya Richardson Jackson will return to Broadway in Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’s new play Purpose.

Jackson, who has previously appeared on Broadway in the 2018 production of To Kill A Mockingbird and the 2014 revival of A Raisin in the Sun, will star alongside Kara Young, who won a Tony Award last season for her role in Purlie Victorious, Harry Lennix (The Blacklist), Jon Michael Hill (Pass Over), Glenn Davis (King James) and Alana Arenas (The Bluest Eye).

Latanya Richardson Jackson and Kara Young are among the complete cast announced today for the Broadway transfer of Steppenwolf Theatre Company’s production of Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ play Purpose, directed by two-time Tony Award-winner Phylicia Rashad.

In addition to Richardson (A Raisin in the Sun) and Purlie Victorious Tony-winner Young, the cast will include Harry Lennix (TV’s The Blacklist), Jon Michael Hill (Broadway’s Pass Over), Glenn Davis (Off Broadway’s Downstate), and Alana Arenas (The Bluest Eye).

Arenas, Davis, Hill, and Lennix all appeared in the play’s acclaimed world premiere at Steppenwolf in Chicago in March 2024.

Purpose will play a limited 19-week run at the Helen Hayes Theater with previews beginning February 25, followed by an official opening on March 17. The engagement runs through July 6, 2025.

“Asian Persuasion,” the film directing debut of three-time Tony Award- and Grammy-winning producer Jhett Tolentino, has set North American distribution and will have a sales launch at the imminent American Film Market.

Hawaii-based Scatena & Rosner Films has acquired the worldwide rights to the romantic comedy. The film tells the story of a lovable underachiever who hatches an outrageous scheme to avoid paying alimony to his fashion-executive ex-wife.

Scatena & Rosner Films will release the film itself in the North American or ‘domestic’ market and has earmarked a Spring 2025 date. The company will begin rights licensing in all other territories from next week’s AFM in Las Vegas (Nov. 5-10).

The film was written by Mike Ang. It stars an ensemble cast, including Dante Basco (“Hook”), Kc Concepcion (“Boy Golden: Shoot to Kill”), Kevin Kreider (“Bling Empire”), and Paolo Montalban (“Cinderella”).

The Broadway revival of Thornton Wilder‘s “Our Town” opened Oct. 10 to rave reviews. This imaginative restaging of this American classic by Tony-winning director Kenny Leon (“A Raisin in the Sun”) is sure to be a strong contender at the Tony Awards next June. The 1988 remounting of this Pulitzer Prize winner won Best Revival while the 2002 version earned Paul Newman his only Tony nomination,

Newman was the Stage Manager, the narrator of this tale of small-town folk at the turn of the 20th century, played in this production by four-time Emmy champ Jim Parsons (“The Big Bang Theory”). Parsons was a Tony contender last season for his featured turn in Paula Vogel‘s “Mother Play.” He was singled out by many critics for his role as ringmaster. And many of the reviews made special mention of the set design by two-time Tony winner Beowulf Boritt and lighting by four-time Tony nominee Allen Lee Hughes.

Imani (Jasmine Davis) was a recurring character in The Chi, but she suddenly left the show after season 4 and hasn't been back on since. First introduced in season 3, episode 5, "Terror Town", Imani is a transgender woman who becomes Trig's (Luke James) girlfriend in The Chi. Davis ended up appearing in 13 episodes across seasons 3 and 4 and, with Trig being elevated to a series regular in season 4, it followed that Imani would likely get some more screen time as well. However, Imani never appeared in the cast of The Chi season 5 or season 6.

Imani's last episode ended up being season 4, episode 10, "A Raisin in the Sun" and the character hasn't been back since. It's a shame considering her interesting story. Imani was assigned male at birth, but identified as a woman from a very young age. Sadly, her father never accepted that part of her and even tried to kill Imani when...

The new season of Curses! is coming to Apple TV+, set to arrive on Oct. 4, 2024. Ahead of the streaming premiere of Season 2, Cbr can unveil a sneak peek clip that reveals an early look at one of the new episodes.

The clip, dubbed "The Only Human Friend," features a new scene with Stanley convincing the Vanderhouven family to allow him to join them on a big trip. The episode, which is called "The Didgeridoo," sees Stanley (Darby) joining the family on an "adventure to Australia, where they unpack the surprising history of a cursed musical instrument." Wolfgang Petersen's 1985 sci-fi film "Enemy Mine" was beset with production problems and bogged down by massive marketing costs. The film's original director, Richard Loncraine (1995's "Richard III"), reportedly butted heads with producer Stephen Friedman and walked off the set after only a week of shooting. Petersen stepped in after that, moving the production to Germany and starting over. A film that was supposed to boast a modest budget of only $17 million ended up costing over $29 million.

"Enemy Mine" was then released into the very busy 1985 holiday season, competing with "Out of Africa," "The Color Purple," "Legend," "Clue," and "The Jewel of the Nile." Audiences, it seems, weren't in the mood for a modest sci-fi yarn, and stayed away in droves. "Enemy Mine" also opened alongside Terry Gilliam's dystopian nightmare "Brazil" and Richard Attenborough "A Chorus Line," but those films similarly tanked.

Additionally, the reviews for "Enemy Mine" were only middling at best.

Exclusive: Tony-nominated composer Branford Marsalis (Fences) is joining a revised music team for the upcoming fall Broadway production of A Wonderful World: The Louis Armstrong Musical to create new musical arrangements and orchestrations, producers said today.

The new team, which also includes music supervisor Daryl Waters, dance music arranger Zane Mark and music director Darryl G. Ivey, replaces Annastasia Victory and Michael O. Mitchell who served those functions at the show’s pre-Broadway engagements last year in New Orleans and Chicago.

A spokesman for the production declined comment on the reasons for the switch.

The musical, starring Tony-winner James Monroe Iglehart (Disney’s Aladdin) as the groundbreaking jazz great, begins previews at Studio 54 on Wednesday October 16 ahead of an opening date of Monday November 11.

Rashad will recur as Mrs. Elizabeth Kirkland. She is described as “a woman from a prominent family in Newport with ties dating back to the American Revolution who has high standards and an occasionally sharp tongue. She is unwilling to compromise the standards and expectations of her elite and exclusive social group — particularly when it comes to her son.”

Audra McDonald will reopen Broadway’s Majestic Theatre with a new production of Gypsy.

McDonald will play Rose, one of the top roles in musical theater, which has been played by the likes of Ethel Merman, Angela Lansbury, Tyne Daly, Bernadette Peters and Patti LuPone. George C. Wolfe, a five time Tony-Award winning director, will helm the revival. Camille A. Brown (Hell’s Kitchen) has been tapped as choreographer.

Performances begin Nov. 21, with an opening night Dec. 19. This production will be the first to play the Majestic Theatre, which was the longtime home to The Phantom of the Opera. The theater closed for renovations after the production ended its 35-year run in April 2023.

When Yelena agrees to help Sonia (Alison Pill) discover if her feelings for Astrov (William Jackson Harper) are reciprocated, she unknowingly unleashes a fiery passion in him which overwhelms the estate.

Oscar-winning actor Louis Gossett Jr. died of a lung condition, according to his death certificate obtained by TMZ. The actor died in Santa Monica on March 29 at the age of 87.

According to the report, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (Copd), was the main cause of death, TMZ says, with heart failure and atrial fibrillation contributing factors.

A cause of death was not known at the time of Gossett’s passing last month.

His family announced the death in a statement on March 29: “It is with our heartfelt regret to confirm our beloved father passed away this morning.” It continued, “We would like to thank everyone for their condolences at this time. Please respect the family’s privacy during this difficult time.”

Gossett’s first cousin Neal L. Gossett revealed to The Associated Press that the actor died on Thursday night (March 28th) in Santa Monica. No cause of death was given, but Gossett announced that he had prostate cancer in 2010.

Born May 27th, 1936 in Brooklyn, New York, Gossett Jr. began acting in high school and debuted on Broadway when he was just 17 years old. In 1959, he played the role of George Murchison in A Raisin in the Sun, making his feature film debut a few years later in the movie adaptation of the play.

After returning to New York City and becoming a Broadway star, Gossett Jr. landed a breakout TV role in the 1977 ABC miniseries Roots.
