Peter Yarrow — the singer-songwriter who’s best known for his work with the iconic folk music trio Peter, Paul and Mary — has passed away.

He was 86 years old.

Yarrow leaves behind a complicated legacy.

Along with his collaborators Paul Stookey and Mary Travers, Yarrow helped to shape the musical tastes of an entire generation.

The group’s 1962 debut album went double platinum and won two Grammys.

Sen. Bob Menendez (D-New Jersey) was found guilty on all 16 counts, including wire fraud, bribery and extortion, at his trial in Manhattan.

Menendez faced calls to resign immediately by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy (D).

Prosecutor Paul Monteleoni said the New Jersey senator placed “his power up for sale” in his closing argument.

An indictment disclosed in federal court stated that Menendez and his wife, Nadine Menendez, had been charged with violating corruption and bribery laws. They allegedly engaged in a scheme in 2018 to assist the Egyptian government.

The indictment said that the senator and his wife accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes, paid in cash, gold bars, home mortgage payments, luxury vehicles and other valuable items.

While searching Menendez’s home in June 2022, federal agents disclosed that they found hidden cash and gold bars. Investigators also discovered over $480,000 in cash hidden in envelopes and clothing.

Lori Vallow Daybell, an Idaho woman found guilty of murdering her two kids and conspiring to murder her husband’s first wife, has appealed her conviction, according to court documents.

The notice of appeal was filed on August 31 by her attorney. The attorney cites Daybell’s multiple issues with her conviction. The appeal raised concerns about her mental competency, an opening statement made by prosecutors to the jury and her right to a speedy trial.

Daybell was found guilty of murdering her two children, Joshua Vallow, 7, and Tylee Ryan, 16. The proceeding took seven weeks, with dozens of witnesses testifying during the trial. The 50-year-old mother was ultimately convicted on two counts of murder, three counts of conspiracy to commit murder, and one count of grand theft.

The Allman Brothers Band has announced the release of Trouble No More: 50th Anniversary Collection, a box set of rarities, unreleased tracks, live performances and classic songs. The box set, out February 28th via Island Mercury/UMe, celebrates the 50th anniversary of the rock band, and is available as a 10-lp or 5-cd box set or on digital.

Needless to say, that was not the same Martha Stewart hawking "delicious foods" and whatever else on American television. But quite possibly, the Martha Stewart who died in February 2012 -- if any -- was not the Martha Stewart of old Fox movies either. More good news for my favorite film genre! Back in May, I attended and wrote about the great “I Wake Up Dreaming” noir film festival at San Francisco’s Roxie Theater, hosted by Elliot Lavine. Showcasing old and rare B-movies from the 30s to the 50s, the festival was so successful that it was extended for another week.

Consider this a further extension two changing seasons later, as starting this Thursday Mr. Lavine will once again bring 22 rare noir gems to the Roxie for two weeks of betrayals, knife-sharp suspense and treacherous women.

This time around, the films are newly restored 35mm archive prints from Columbia Pictures—directed by acclaimed directors like Nicholas Ray, Fritz Lang, Samuel Fuller, Don Siegel, and king of gimmicks William Castle. As with “I Wake Up Dreaming,” the films are shown as double features: two films for $11.
