Above: Italian 4-fogli for Birdman of Alcatraz. Artist: Renato Casaro.Starting today with a week-long run of Robert Siodmak’s The Killers, New York’s Film Forum is hosting a 4-week, 37-film retrospective of one of the great he-men of Hollywood. With his square jaw, gymnast’s physique, and megawatt grin, Burt Lancaster (1913–1994) must have been a boon to movie poster artists and over the years he was drawn or painted by many great affichistes. I could have curated a post on just the Italian renditions of Lancaster alone: over the years he was painted by Ercole Brini, Anselmo Ballester, Luigi Martinati, Renato Casaro, Averardo Ciriello, and many more. To mark the retrospective I have selected 50 of my favorite illustrated images of the indelible star, from his brooding film noir youth (though he was actually 33 when he made his debut in The Killers), through his serious thespian mid-period to his...

Clone High Episode 1 ‘Escape to Beer Mountain: A Rope of Sand’
Directed by Todd Collyer and Harold Harris
Written by Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, Bill Lawrence
Aired 11/2/2002
Back in November of 2002, MTV aired a new animated series about high school called Clone High, which was co-created by a pre- Scrubs and Cougar Town Bill Lawrence. Due to poor ratings from a misguided public controversy (a poster with the Ghandi character in Maxim magazine) and poor support from the network, the show was pulled from American televisions before the last five episodes of the 13-episode first season aired. The powers that be didn’t realize what a masterpiece they had on their hands; Clone High is one of the most brilliant satires I’ve ever watched, taking a high-concept premise and making it infinitely relatable by infusing it with light-hearted but wildly intelligent parodies on life in high school. But after...

"African cinema is generally woefully overlooked by the West, and the filmmaking being done in Republic of Chad has been particularly invisible," begins Farihah Zaman in Reverse Shot. "The oversight is not entirely unreasonable; decades of civil war have left the local film industry all but nonexistent — for thirty years there was not even a single movie theater in the entire country. That changed in 2010 when Mahamet-Saleh Haroun won the Cannes Jury Prize for A Screaming Man. His film, the first from his country to screen in competition at the prestigious French festival, now has another distinction, having convinced a government in the midst of war the importance of investing a million dollars in building a movie theater specifically so that it could be shown."

Brought to you by: That Dating Website You Just Joined - Don't worry. This one probably won't find you true happiness either. This week, on a very special episode of Reject Radio, I fight my way through nasal congestion to provide another electrifying show thanks completely to my special guests - the soft-spoken John Gholson from Horror's Not Dead and Sci-fi Squad as well as our very own Culture Warrior, Landon Palmer. We made zero vagina references despite reviewing The Box. This oversight will be remedied on next week's show. If you're like me, you love the excess of the 1980s that's most likely directly responsible for the current downfall of our society. Thanks, a lot, parents. Your wanton disregard for decency and love for cocaine flushed us down the toilet. I know the truth. Bret Easton Ellis wrote my 8th grade history book. Luckily, we'll be affronted by that very excess when Denzel Washington enthusiast Tony Scott focuses his attention on the life of Chippendale's inventor Somen "Steve" Banerjee. There's currently no title, so I'm going to go ahead and call it Showgirls 3: Showboys 1: A Rope of Sand. According to Variety, the story will focus on Banerjee who went insane after getting successful and went as far as hiring a hitman to kill a choreographer. If you know anything else about Banerjee, you'll also already be aware that he was a pioneer of the female mud wrestling scene in Los Angeles and once ran...
