Astrid Lindgren was unhappy with the changes made to her story in this film, which led to her writing all of the scripts 20 years later for the Fifi Brindacier (1969) TV series, which she was more proud of. Besides changes to the plot, Astrid's criticisms included the fact that Pippi was played by an adult (instead of a child), and the addition of several new major characters not in the books, particularly the owner of a record store (Stig Järrel), his young daughter Birgit (Doreen Denning), and her boyfriend Magnus (Michael Fant).
