Top 5: Cursed Films
Image
The recent Top 5 on our picks of the Most Extreme Films went down rather well with you, our Nerdly audience, so we thought we’d bring you another Top 5 – this time looking at the Top 5 Cursed Films… in no particular order may I add! Check out the list below and let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Opera Mortem

Written and directed by English painter David Fleas, Opera Mortem was apparently filmed over almost 10 years, in super-8 mm and VHS no less, and screened only one time in the 1973 at the Nottingham’s Odeon Film Theatre. Described as weird, trippy, filled with graphic blood, sex, and black magical ritualistic symbols, Opera Mortem – and its 1973 screening – are “believed” to be cursed; with reports of fires in projection booths, people dying after seeing it, riots… you name it, Opera Mortem reportedly caused it. Undoubtedly due to all the satanic symoblism within it!

Superman & Lois Episode 7: Inside the “Man of Steel” Ending That Changes the Series
Image
This article contains Superman & Lois episode 7 spoilers.

Superman & Lois Episode 7

It took seven episodes, but we’ve finally learned the secrets of the mysterious stranger who up until now has only been known as “Captain Luthor.” Since the first episode of Superman & Lois aired back in February, fans (and journalists) have been buzzing about the identity of the man under the armor who has been giving Superman a hard time, and lately, spending a lot of time with Lois Lane.

And while everyone just took the armor’s AI at its word that this is a “Captain Luthor” from elsewhere in the DC multiverse, Superman & Lois episode 7, “Man of Steel,” turns all of that on its head, as it turns out that almost everything we had assumed about this character is wrong.

Fans learn the truth about the Stranger at the same time that Superman and...

Ed Catto: It’s A Bat, Bat, Bat, Bat, Bat World
I’m a big fan of Batman. Always have been. Just this past weekend my wonderful Great Aunt Margaret reminded me that I proudly wore a bat-cape as a young boy. Don’t worry, I think I outgrew that by the time I was 22. These days, I let my Batman fan-ness show through with things like my Bat-article in this year’s Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide, which focuses on the top Legend of the Dark Knight Batman stories. Jim Steranko provided a gorgeous Batman cover, so it’s a great honor.

But as my interest in comics has broadened, the focus on Batman, per se, has been pushed aside. There are plenty of fans to take my place. Batman attracts a lot of fans. It’s fine by me if it’s time for other fans to step up to the forefront. And it’s just as well. So...

Superman and Metropolis Celebrate John Ostrander!
So – where was I last weekend? I was in Metropolis, that’s where, down in the Southern tip of Illinois attending the 39th Annual Superman Celebration. Way back in 1972 the city got DC’s permission to call itself Superman’s home and later that year the Illinois legislature passed a resolution confirming it. By the late 70s, the city decided to capitalize on all this by staging an annual Superman Celebration on the second weekend in June, a festival for the Man of Steel. Damn good idea, I sez.

The Celebration includes media guests connected with Supes. This year it was Margot Kidder, Dean Cain, James Marsters, and Sarah Douglas… as well as a few of us comic book types. I was the featured writer about six years ago and it seems I didn’t burn too many bridges because they had me back again this year along with Jimmy Palmiotti,...

Mindy Newell: The Sound Of Breaking Glass?
“Be careful of mankind, Diana. They do not deserve you.” —Queen Hippolyta

Will the Amazonian be the woman who finally breaks the Hollywood glass ceiling?

Wonder Woman, starring Israeli actress Gal Gadot as Princess Diana of Themiscrya, premieres on June 2, just 12 days away, and the fate of all the superwomen and their eponymous movies who would follow her lies in the ability of her sword-wielding, shield-bearing, gold lassoing hands and her armor-plated breast to vanquish the biggest and baddest super-villain of them all: Box Office.

I’ve watched every trailer and clip that Warner Bros. has released, and though they were all great, the very best of all of them, im-not-so-ho, was Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice. Every time Ms. Gadot showed up, whether it was in her guise as Diana Prince or as Wonder Woman, the movie morphed from an overbearing, weighted down slog through mud into...

Mindy Newell: Mothers Dearest
We all have mothers. I had a mother of a cold last week, and since Sunday was Mom’s day, I thought I would take a moment to honor all those women who have taken on the absolutely hardest job in the multi-verse… even though I’m a bit late.

I think the best-known mother in the four-color universe is the farmer’s wife from Smallville who, with her husband, found and raised the “strange visitor from another planet” who would grow up to become the one and only Superman.

Although I’ve always known that farmer’s wife as Martha Clark Kent, her name varied for quite a while; she was known as Mary Kent in Superman #1 (1939). In George F. Lowther’s 1942 novel, The Adventures of Superman, and on the radio program for which Mr. Lowther was a writer, Mrs. Kent’s first name was Sarah, which also followed...

Watchmen Characters To Collide With DC Universe In Doomsday Clock
If your memory serves you well, then you’ll likely remember that earlier this year DC Entertainment President Geoff Johns hinted at writing for the Watchmen characters, an exciting prospect that we all assumed to be the culmination of everything set forth by the DC Universe: Rebirth one-shot released nearly one year ago. Well, it looks like our educated guesses were all correct as the the publisher has now announced Doomsday Clock.

Basically, this 4-issue standalone series will payoff everything set up by the aforementioned one-shot, The Return of Wally West, “Superman Reborn,” “The Button” and everything in between, making it feel like an event as significant as Final Crisis or Flashpoint, a statement that we’re not making lightly. And, if that weren’t motivation enough to entice you to read this limited run, then perhaps knowing that Gary Frank, the same artist who worked with Johns on Superman...

Zack Snyder Shares Image From Henry Cavill’s Man Of Steel Screen Test
Despite some lacking foresight and thinking that Superman won’t be appearing in Justice League, let’s face it, we all know he’ll be there. Still, I have to admit that failing to include Big Blue in the latest round of marketing was indeed a big risk that hopefully won’t backfire. Perhaps that served as minor motivation though for Zack Snyder releasing a picture of Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel screen test.

Captioned with “I knew when I saw him he was my Superman,” the post from Snyder’s Vero account shows a younger, somewhat thinner Cavill lounging in Christopher Reeve’s suit, which when seen in black and white, you have to admit kind of looks like George Reeves’ suit from the 1950’s TV series, The Adventures of Superman. Or, maybe, the one Kirk Alyn donned in the 1940’s film serials.

Interestingly enough, wearing the costumes...

Eobard Thawne Totally Remembers Flashpoint
Although Action Comics #976 was probably the most important read this week when it came to the more significant happenings in the DC Universe as a whole, it’s undeniable that The Flash #19 was not to be overlooked, either. Granted most of the issue was spent fleshing out the “Sins of the Father” story arc, but it was the final page that demanded the attention of all.

As it turns out, Eobard Thawne/Zoom (could we please go back to calling him the Reverse Flash now that Daniel West is dead?) has broken out of Iron Heights Prison. Not only that, but he now recalls the world of Flashpoint – and possibly even the time that preceded the New 52.

Now, a complete recollection of past realities is possible given that Superman has merged his pre and post-Flashpoint selves and realities, in addition to the adult Wally West jogging everyone’s memories of in Titans.

Powerless Showrunner Has Ideas For A Grant Gustin Cameo
Powerless Season 1 Gallery 1 of 38

Earlier tonight, DC Comics premiered its brand new show Powerless. However, unlike say Arrow or The Flash, this isn’t, strictly speaking, a superhero affair. Instead, the series is a workplace comedy that focuses on normal humans living in the same world as these larger than life heroes, and the repercussions that come along with that. Still, coming to us from DC, many fans are expecting easter eggs, nods and perhaps, even a familiar face or two as Powerless carries out its debut season.

Those first two things have already occurred, several times, but seeing the likes of Batman or Superman showing up doesn’t seem too likely at this point. And that’s despite the fact that the main characters work for Bruce Wayne’s cousin, Van. So, while we shouldn’t hold our breath...

Justice League: Central City Confirmed For Film Due To Photo - Whoops!
A few weeks back, the watchful eyes at Reddit caught an image from the Suicide Squad viral website called Argus-gov, that shows the file on the short-lived Slipknot, which detailed his moving to Keystone City to, "...pursue his criminal ambitions." DC comic fans will tell ya that Barry Allen is from Central City, and Wally West and Jay Garrick are from Keystone City, and these two cities are sister cities. Check the photo below.

The news caused some speculation that either the Justice League film would have Barry living in Keystone City, or perhaps we may get to see Wally West or Jay Garrick in some capacity. Now, I am almost positive that in Suicide Squad, Captain Boomerang got caught by The Flash in Central City, so I just assumed that the two cities would coexist much like they do in the Flash DC CW show. But, thanks to an...

10 Arrowverse Heroes That Are Completely Different From The Comics
From the humble beginnings of Arrow‘s very grounded first season in 2012, a wide-ranging, ever-growing shared universe of DC TV shows has sprung. With The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow and of course, animated webseries Vixen, the so-called Arrowverse has been a gift come true for fans, as it’s brought so many previously neglected heroes to the screen – as well as creating some of its own from scratch.

But while Oliver Queen is still a billionaire archer, Barry Allen is still the fastest man alive and Kara Danvers remains Superman’s cousin, many of their sidekicks, allies and associated team members have had their backstories, powers or even personalities altered in the transition from the page to the screen.

More News From The Web

Sometimes this is due to different versions of the character being blended together – such as The Flash‘s Wally West borrowing from both the Post-Crisis and New 52 incarnations.

Great Job, Internet!: Mouth-breathing bystanders in superhero movies love staring upwards
“Look! Up in the sky! It’s a bird! It’s a plane!” Those iconic words, heard in each episode of The Adventures Of Superman, established a clear precedent for the superhero genre. Civilians exist in these stories mainly to be rescued from danger and to gaze in slack-jawed bewilderment at the costumed crime fighters before them. Artist Lj Frezza examines this trope in a new video essay for Fandor Keyframe called “Superhero Bystanders.” Culled from 34 years’ worth of superhero movies, ranging from 1980’s Superman II to 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2, the video largely consists of scenes in which powerless mortals gape like idiots at something amazing happening just off-screen. Actors rarely look as foolish as they do when they’re pretending to watch a man fly over a major American city. “The on-screen audience mirrors us as viewers,” claims a caption in the essay. If ...

Comics: Tom King Reveals When Watchmen Will Start Connecting To The DC Universe
DC: Rebirth contained plenty of twists and turns for readers, including the return of the original Wally West and the 'original' Superman, the existence of three separate Jokers, and a general synchronization of the New 52 and pre-New 52 universes. The biggest revelation, however, was the reveal that the Watchmen would now have a presence within the greater DC Universe. Since that reveal, there hasn't been much in the way of the characters making their whereabouts or purpose known. Many fans have suspected that Mr. Oz, who has appeared in several DC titles, is secretly Ozymandias, and Doctor Manhattan has been hinted as the character who has "stolen ten years" from the characters of the DC world. According to Batman writer Tom King, Batman #9 (which releases October 19th), will begin addressing the connections. "It starts in Batman #9," King told io9. "It’ll hit there. This is a new continuity, so a lot...

Star Trek: what Discovery can take from its past
Alastair Stewart Sep 9, 2016

Star Trek is at its best when it aims to be the smartest show on TV, that's why it's endured for fifty years...

For many people who grew up watching Star Trek, it was as much a formative influence as any sermon or religious text. Even now, it still has a timeless quality which has made it a perennial fixture on every entertainment medium over the last five decades, and for good reason.

With another blockbuster film success in Star Trek Beyond and a new series titled Discovery on the horizon for 2017, few would say that after 50 years Star Trek's future is looking bleak. Yet what is the source of Trek's enduring popularity? Is it as simple as an original idea taking hold in the public consciousness, or is there more to it?

Look at the original Star Trek television series (latterly referred to as The...

We Have Some Theories About The Flash Season Three
A spoilerific look into the next season of the CW hit.

Last Tuesday, DC revealed that Wally West (Keiynan Lonsdale) will don an adapted version of the Kid Flash costume in the premiere episode of The Flash Season 3 entitled “Flashpoint”. The surprise posting, along with official confirmation of the title alluded to in the Season Two finale and “leaked” on Twitter last month, were only the first newsworthy developments from the show’s first week of filming.

As early as Tuesday afternoon, various sources began to tweet set photos depicting Londsdale with a mysterious new speedster apparently played by Australian actor Todd Lasance. Americans may remember Lasance from roles in The Vampire Diaries and Spartacus: War of the Damned, but he has a much more extensive acting history in his home country. Considering that the CW has not announced his casting, Lasance...

Lonsdale plays Wally West on the show, and fans of the comic know that Wally eventually becomes Kid Flash. “I definitely had that on my mind, and I would imagine that’s where we’re going to get to go with this character,” he told Nerdist in January. “But I have no idea when that would happen. 'The Flash': 'Dope' Actress Kiersey Clemons Top Choice for Iris West
The DC Extended Universe has had a bit of a rocky start. Man Of Steel was mixed and Batman v Superman was mostly negative. Following that reception, the original director for The Flash standalone flick, Seth Grahame-Smith, pulled out, citing creative differences. This seemed to indicate a lot of bad stuff going on behind the scenes over at WB, but if the marketing for Suicide Squad, the recent Justice League set visit impressions, and the hiring of Rick Famuyiwa as director on The Flash are any indication, they seem to be course-correcting fairly well over there.

Ezra Miller was already grandfathered in as Barry Allen from Batman v Superman, so there's been no anticipation on who would be the lead, but pretty much every other role in the cast is up for grabs. Well, it sounds like WB is zeroing in on the role of Iris West, love interest of Barry,...

Noel Neill, Superman's Lois Lane, Dead At Age 95
Noel Neill with George Reeves in "The Adventures of Superman".

By Lee Pfeiffer

Yet another pop culture legend of the Baby Boomer era has left us. Actress Noel Neill, who played Superman's love interest Lois Lane, has died at age 95. Neill began her career in Hollywood with bit roles in mainstream films. She was chosen to play Lois Lane, the intrepid female reporter for the Daily Planet newspaper of the fictional city Metropolis that Superman and his alter-ego Clark Kent called home. As colleagues on the newspaper, Lois and Clark were friends but it was always Superman that stole her heart. One of the more amusing aspects of the Superman legend is that Lois Lane, a top reporter, could never affirm her suspicions that Clark actually was Superman simply because his "disguise" consisted of a pair of eyeglasses. Nevertheless, the Lois Lane character was unusual for the era because...

Noel Neill
Noel Neill, TV's Lois Lane, Dead at 95
Noel Neill
Noel Neill, best known for her role as Lois Lane in the 1950s series Adventures of Superman, died Sunday in Arizona after a long illness. She was 95.

The actress’ friend, manager and biographer, Larry Ward, confirmed the news in a lengthy Facebook tribute.

Neill made her debut as TV’s Lois starting with Season 2, replacing Phyllis Coates in the role. She actually first played the icon reporter in the 1948 Superman film serial (opposite Kirk Alyn). She had cameos in the 1978 Superman film (which marked Christopher Reeve’s debut as the Man of Steel) as well as 2006’s Superman Returns (starring...

Supergirl’s Season 2 Premiere Lands A Title Sure To Be Familiar To Superman Fans
Supergirl arrives on The CW this Fall after making the leap from CBS, and star David Harewood took to Instagram this weekend to reveal the premiere’s title. While it would be nice if it revealed the mystery surrounding who – or what – landed on Earth in that crashed Krytonian vessel, it instead pays homage to the cousin of Kara Danvers.

Titled “The Adventures of Supergirl,” it clearly references both The Adventures of Superman radio and television shows from the 40s/50s and Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman from the 90s. It’s also the title of the Girl of Steel’s digital comic book series, though that’s more than likely little more than a coincidence.

Regardless of why it was chosen, this is a very cool choice for the title which nicely sets the stage for a new era of adventures featuring Supergirl. It’s thought...

Noel Neill Dies: Lois Lane Of TV’s ‘Adventures Of Superman’ Was 95
Noel Neill, TV’s early – and to many Boomers, only – Lois Lane, died at her home in Tucson, Arizona yesterday. The Adventures of Superman costar (opposite George Reeves’ Superman and Jack Larson’s Jimmy Olsen) was 95. The former actress had been in ill health since suffering a broken hip in 2010. Her death was announced by her friend and biographer Larry Thomas Ward. “Noel Neill maintained that bright, perky and engaging personality up until her death,” Ward said. Funeral…...

Supergirl's Season 2 Premiere Gets An Awesome Title; David Harewood Will Return As Martian Manhunter
One of the downsides of Supergirl's move to The CW is budget cuts, and as a result, we still don't know which supporting characters will be returning this Fall. One who many fans suspected might be on the chopping block is David Harewood's Martian Manhunter, especially as the CGI used to bring him to life is without a doubt a little on the pricey side. Thankfully, we know now he's definitely coming back.  That was confirmed today when he shared the first page of the script for the season two premiere, an episode which will be titled "The Adventures of Supergirl." That's the same name as the Girl of Steel's digital comic book series and also bears a resemblance to both The Adventures of Superman radio and television shows from the 40s/50s and Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman from the 90s. Alas, a title...

Comic Book Review: Titans Rebirth #1
I will call this the reunion that we had been waiting for. The missing piece that the Titans felt during Titan Hunt has finally arrived. But the twist here is that no one remembers who Wally is. The issue takes places mostly in Dick Grayson’s apartment, where Wally has found the Titans. Using a something I will call a “speed force spark” Wally jolts the Titans mind with memories of them together from the past, causing them to remember who he is. Then he goes on to explain to the Titans that someone had stolen time and memories from them and that it was only a matter of time before it happened again. He explains to them that it was going to be up to them to figure it out together.

Most of this issue was a re-introduction of the Titans, reuniting them with Wally West. For me personally I liked the fact that they were able to remember him after so many including his girlfriend Linda could not in the Rebirth Special. I liked the link that they created between the Titans feeling of missing something or in this case someone and the Rebirth Special where DC had recognized that as a whole DC Universe had been missing something as well (Wally West being the link). Speaking about the Rebirth special we saw the story line from there continue in the Flash Rebirth one shot and now in this book. Will the big event featuring the Watchmen come out of the books featuring the speedsters? Or will its effect be carefully plotted out throughout the many different DC titles? This has me very curious and looking forward to the upcoming Titan’s issue as well as the Flash. I love that fact that DC has Brett Booth and Norm Rapmund working together because their skills combined make for a wonderful book, not to mention the colors by Andrew Dalhouse. The book is set in a dark apartment, yet most of the panels are very. Although not much happened here I thought the reunion was necessary to get the Titans going again. The great thing about it now is that we don’t have to wait a month! The next book is two weeks away!

DC Universe: Rebirth #1

Story: Geoff Johns Art: Gary Frank, Ivan Reis, Ethan Van Sciver, Phil Jimenez, etc

Review: This came out on 05/25/2016 but I’m doing a quick recap here so it fits in with the rest of the rebirth reviews. This is it, the big bang of getting the DC Universe back on track and “fixing” some of the mistakes of the “New 52” era. Johns writes a plausible enough reason for how everything in “52” was created-seemingly by an all-powerful being (A very awesome character that I’m...

Comics: Wally West Makes His Return On Gary Frank's Awesome Cover For DC Rebirth Third Printing
It took five years, but Wally West finally returned in the pages of DC Rebirth and will next be seen as a lead in Titans. Escaping from the Speed Force (where he was presumably trapped by Watchmen character Dr. Manhattan), Wally had an emotional reunion with Barry Allen, and this new cover for the third printing of the comic by Gary Frank and colourist Alex Sinclair depicts his struggle to return.  So far, it seems like this initiative to make superheroes super again has been a hit for DC Comics, as this week's "Rebirth" issues for Batman, Green Arrow, Green Lanterns, and Superman have all sold out and are going back for second printings. Those are all well worth checking out - Green Arrow in particular is pretty damn great - but be sure to share your thoughts on this cover in the comments section.

Mindy Newell: Hard Labor
So Mike Gold, our old and grumpy and sly editor, threw down the gauntlet last week, challenging the marvelous Marc Fishman and the grammatically incorrect me to read the same comic and opine on it. That comic was DC Rebirth #1, the umpteenth revision of the company’s four-color mythos. Marc had his turn on Saturday. Today is mine.

Unlike Marc, I didn’t have travel a long and hard road 45 minutes from my suburban home to another suburb “to make a transaction.” Unlike Marc, I live in a city and the nearest comics store is three blocks away. However, I’m not a particular fan of this four-color emporium – I used to have a fantastic shop six blocks away where I browsed and hung out and bought for many decades, but it closed because of the owner’s illness – so I downloaded and read the e-comic version.

First the positives:

The artwork,...

Watch a Live Read of George Miller’s Justice League Mortal Script with Casper Van Dien as Superman
I would have loved to see George Miller’s Justice League Mortal film, but apparently it just wasn’t meant to be. Right before the film was supposed to start shooting, Warner Bros. shut it down. Not long after the script for the film, which was written by Kieran and Michele Mulroney, leaked online.

The script may have been around awhile, and I’m sure some of you have already read it, but Comic Bug comics store in Manhattan Beach, California recently hosted a livenread of the script with a full cast of actors, and it’s really interesting. Unfortunately, the original cast wasn’t brought together to do this, but it’s still entertaining and worth checking out.

The live-read consists of Adam Marcus as the Narrator, Alfred Pennyworth; Jennifer Wenger as Wonder Woman/Diana Prince; Tracy Drolet as Iris Allen; Curtis Fortier as The Flash/Barry Allen; Will Dixon...

Comic Book Review: DC Universe Rebirth #1
I started reading comics in the “New 52” era. In fact Scott Snyder was already in his second arc in Batman. Lucky for me one of my closest friends made sure that I read certain stories from DC Comics amazing legacy. For example Flashpoint Paradox, The Dark Knight Returns, Watchmen, Crisis on Infinite Earths, Death of Superman, Blackest Night and so on and so on. So much rich history in characters and story arcs, that to this day I am still trying to catch up with. A lot of that past had gotten lost within the New 52 and DC You, changing a lot these “legacy” characters and in the process making long time readers very uncomfortable. Enter Geoff John’s rebirth.

Without giving too much away, Geoff John’s does a brilliant job at using pre New 52 Wally West as a narrator and as the main character in our journey through Rebirth.

Comics: DC Unveils An Epic Poster Featuring The New Look Heroes Of The DC Universe: Rebirth
DC Rebirth isn't a reboot as such, but it is going to change the DC Universe in a big way as the publisher looks to right many of the wrongs caused by The New 52 relaunch back in 2011. That includes bringing back Wally West from the dead, and as you can see below, he has a very cool new look as the other Wally (his cousin, not doppelgänger) suits up as Kid Flash as a member of the new Teen Titans.  There are plenty of other cool reveals here if you look closely enough though, and these are clearly the character DC intends to keep the focus on moving forward. Can you name them all? Which fan-favourites are still missing? Are you happy to see the original pre-New 52 Superman back in the spotlight? As always, be sure to let us know your thoughts on all that and more in the usual place.

Comics: A Beloved Fan-Favourite Hero Finally Returns To The DC Universe In Rebirth #1 Preview
Spoilers for DC Rebirth have already started doing the rounds online, but if you've managed to avoid them and just want to know what to expect from this reality altering comic book, then this preview should do the trick. However, it still reveals a hell of a lot, including the fact that The New 52 Superman is dead and that Wally West - the original, Kid-Flash version - is finally back in the land of the living.  Why he's in his Kid-Flash persona and not suited up as the second Scarlet Speedster remains to be seen, but it seems like some sort of mysterious force has stolen years worth of history from the DC Universe and this tale is going to be all about bringing that back. If you've read those spoilers, you'll know that this comic goes to some weird sounding places, and we'll find out more this Wednesday...

Extended Promo For The Flash Episode Directed By Kevin Smith
Despite being a super fan of DC Comics characters, Kevin Smith has not really had the opportunity to work with their iconic heroes outside of the comic book realm itself. Sure, there was the Tim Burton directed Superman Lives, which Smith penned the script for and came this close to entering principal photography back in the 1990’s, but it is baffling to think that nothing else has materialized since.

That all changes next week when an episode of The Flash, directed by Smith himself, hits the airwaves. Titled “The Runaway Dinosaur,” this outing looks like it picks up where last night’s episode left off as the team utilizes Cisco’s “vibing” abilities to locate Barry Allen in whatever reality he may be trapped in. With the enlistment of the highest profile director to work on the series to date, something tells me this may be a superhero/science fiction tour-de-force.

Mike Gold: Do Comics Belong In Comics?
I am not a sociologist, although I’ve known a few. But let’s assume the fact that “superheroes” (in the broadest sense) fill a need in our lives. They started out in folk lore, they appear in most if not all bibles, they were popularized in the “penny dreadfuls” which evolved into pulp magazines which evolved into comic books.

Tarzan, Sherlock Holmes, Zorro and others helped populate the movie theaters going back to its earliest days back to the silent era. When talkies came around, superheroes became the backbone of the short movie serials that were geared to bring patrons back week after week. Flash Gordon, Captain Marvel, Superman, Batman, Blackhawk, Captain America, Spy Smasher and others joined Zorro and Tarzan in this venue. When network radio came along, comics characters from older media (Superman, The Shadow) joined original creations (The Lone Ranger, Green Hornet) and flourished in the just-home-from-school time slots.

Kirk Alyn, Virginia Carroll, Ed Cassidy, and Carol Forman in Superman (1948)
5 years ago today: We said goodbye to ‘Friday Night Lights’
Kirk Alyn, Virginia Carroll, Ed Cassidy, and Carol Forman in Superman (1948)
“Clear eyes. Full hearts. Can’t Lose.” It was five years ago today that Friday Night Lights fans said goodbye to Coach Taylor, Tami, Julie, Matt, Riggins, and the rest of the residents of Dillion, TX they had grown to love. On February 9, 2011 the series finale aired on DirecTV’s 101 Network. A re-broadcast of the fifth and final season aired a few months later on NBC (where the show debuted in 2006). NBC had cut that deal with DirecTV for the final three seasons of the show because it never gained a large audience. But it was hailed by critics and had a strong devotion from its small following. Celebrating 10 years since Fnl’s premiere, some cast members of the show are set for a reunion at Atx Fest this June. Other notable February 9 happenings in pop culture history: • 1953: The Adventures of Superman first aired in Los Angeles (a syndicated...
