Hilary Swank has been cast in the upcoming third season of Yellowjackets. According to Deadline, she'll be a recurring guest star with an option to bump up to a series regular should the show get renewed for a fourth season. No details have yet been released as to who Swank will play.

Spain’s Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival will fete Annette Bening with its Icon Award at this year’s edition, which runs from October 30 to November 5.

The award will be presented at the festival’s opening ceremony on October 30. Bening will attend the ceremony. As part of the festivities, she will also introduce and discuss a special screening of Stephen Frear’s The Grifters, for which Bening received her first of five Academy Award nominations in 1990.

Bening’s previous honors include a BAFTA Award, two Golden Globe Awards, and two Tony Awards. Some of her credits include Bugsy (1991) with husband Warren Beatty, American Beauty (1999), and Being Julia (2004), which won her the Golden Globe for Best Actress, with additional Oscar nominations to follow for her leading roles in The Kids Are All Right (2010) and most recently, as swimmer Diana Nyad in the Netflix biographical film.

The musical “Hell’s Kitchen” and the drama “Stereophonic” are leading the nominations with 13 followed closely by the musical “The Outsiders” with 12 for the 77th annual Tony Awards which will be telecast live from Lincoln Center June 16 on Pluto and CBS. The ceremony hosted for the third consecutive year by Oscar-winner Ariana DeBose will also hand out several special Tony Awards.

Two powerhouse directors (and previous Tony winners), George C. Wolfe and Jack O’Brien, are set to receive special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre. Other special honors will go to sound designer Abe Jacobs, Alex Edelman for his one-man show “Just for Us,” and Nikiya Mathis for her hair and wig design for the Tony nominated “Jaja’s African Hair Braiding.” Among those receiving Tonys for excellence in the theater are the Dramatist Guild Foundation, the Samuel J. Friedman Heath Center for the Performing Arts and the Wilma Theater.

Directors Jack O’Brien and George C. Wolfe will each receive a 2024 Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre.

Wolfe is a five-time Tony-Award winning director, helming shows including Angels in America: Millennium Approaches and Bring in ‘da Noise, Bring in ‘da Funk, and has worked as a writer, a producer and artistic director of The Public Theater from 1993 to 2005. O’Brien is a three-time Tony Award-winning director for Hairspray, Henry IV and The Coast of Utopia, among many other credits on Broadway, including last season’s Shucked, All My Sons, Carousel, The Front Page, The Full Monty, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Porgy and Bess. Tony-winning directors George C. Wolfe and Jack O’Brien will each receive the 2024 Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre next month, Tony administrators announced today.

“Honoring these two gentlemen for their outstanding achievements and contributions to theatre is not only a recognition of their innate talent and dedication but to a lifetime of brilliant work,” said Jason Laks, interim president of The Broadway League.

“With credits such as Hairspray and The Invention of Love, Jack O’Brien has showcased astounding diversity, skill and passion throughout his esteemed career,” Laks said “In his role as Artistic Director of the Old Globe Theatre for 25 years, he also leaves a lasting legacy of strengthening the relationship between the commercial and nonprofit worlds.”

Exclusive: CAA has signed Kip Williams, the adapter and director of the buzzy West End production of the Sydney Theatre Company’s The Picture of Dorian Gray starring newly minted Olivier Award winner Sarah Snook.

Williams is the youngest-ever Artistic Director of the Stc. The company’s Dorian Gray, featuring Succession‘s Snook in all of the roles, opened last month in London’s West End to rave reviews.

At Stc, Williams directed Playing Beatie Bow, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui, Three Sisters, Cloud Nine, Chimerica, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, All My Sons, Suddenly Last Summer, Macbeth and Romeo and Juliet, among others.

Williams has also adapted and directed productions for Melbourne Theatre Company, Sydney Chamber Opera, Malthouse Theatre, and Perth Festival. For this work, he received the Helpmann Award for Best Direction of a Play, the Green Room Award, and the Sydney Theatre Award for Best Director.

Exclusive: Annette Bening, who just received her fifth Oscar nomination last week for her portrayal of champion swimmer Diana Nyad in Nyad, has been named as the inaugural recipient of the Santa Barbara Film Festival’s Arlington Award.

The Arlington represents the first new award the festival has created in more than two decades and is named for the historic venue where all the fest’s annual tributes timed to Oscar season take place. It will be presented on Friday, February 16, 2024 at the theater, preceded by an in-person conversation I will be moderating covering her entire career.

“This is the first award added to our slate in 20 years. It is made to honor an artist who is greatly admired and who has demonstrated an incomparable commitment to film and its craft. Ms. Bening has not only displayed all of those qualities, but is considered by us to be a friend of the film festival.

The Make-up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards will honor Nyad star Annette Bening with the Distinguished Artisan Award at its 11th annual Muahs Awards.

The event is set for Sunday, February 18, at The Beverly Hilton.

Exclusive: Pulitzer Prize-winning August: Osage County playwright Tracy Letts has signed with UTA for representation in all areas, the agency said today.

A prolific playwright and actor, Letts’s career in theater has spanned decades, including the Tony- and Pulitzer-nominated The Minutes, which he wrote and starred in. The dark comedy opened on Broadway on April 17, 2022.

Letts’ other recent Broadway productions include his play Linda Vista in 2019. The same year, he starred opposite Annette Bening in a Broadway revival of Arthur Miller’s All My Sons, and he won a Tony for his portrayal of “George” in the 2012 revival of Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

Letts was honored with the Pulitzer in 2008 for his August: Osage County, winner of five Tony awards including Best Play.

In 2019, Letts played Henry Ford II in James Mangold’s Ford v Ferrari and starred in Greta Gerwig’s Little Women.

"Smokey and the Bandit" was a delightful '70s action-comedy movie; it spawned two sequels, the first of which was pretty damn good. For a modern audience looking back, the series was also remarkably star-studded. The Lost Boys, the 1987 cult classic horror-comedy about hunky teenage vampires that made stars of Jason Patric, Kiefer Sutherland and Coreys Feldman and Haim, is being adapted as a stage musical by a team that includes co-book writers It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia writer/EP David Hornsby and Chris Hoch, Parade director Michael Arden and pop-rock band The Rescues.

The project is being produced by first-time collaborators – and noted stage and film actors – Patrick Wilson, James Carpinello and Marcus Chait. The musical will be produced by special arrangement with Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures.

Casting and a production timeline were not announced.

Exclusive: Actors Vanessa Kirby and Arthur Darvill (Broadchurch) have signed on to narrate the audiobook version of Good Material, the second novel from writer and journalist Dolly Alderton.

The audiobook is set for UK publication on November 2 through Penguin Random House Audio ahead of the hardback publication on November 9. Darvill stars as Andy while Kirby is Jen in the novel.

It’s official: the DC Universe officially has its new Clark Kent and Lois Lane.

On Tuesday, news broke that David Corenswet would take on the role of the Man of Steel in James Gunn’s upcoming Superman: Legacy, the film that will introduce a new slate at DC, courtesy of Gunn and Peter Safran.

Legacy is one of the projects featured in what the co-heads of film at the studio dubbed Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters, which is set to tell stories across TV and film. Other titles include Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and The Authority.

According to Gunn, the film follows Corenswet’s Clark Kent/Superman as he learns to balance his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing, thanks to parents Jonathan and Martha Kent in Smallville, Kansas. Corenswet will star alongside Rachel Brosnahan, who takes on the role of Daily Planet reporter Lois Lane.

Former Saturday Night Live cast member Alex Moffat will make his Broadway debut in the upcoming comedy The Cottage, directed by Jason Alexander. Also joining the previously announced Eric McCormack, Laura Bell Bundy, and Lilli Cooper in the cast will be Nehal Joshi and Dana Steingold.

Sandy Rustin’s The Cottage, Alexander’s Broadway directorial debut, will play a limited run at The Hayes Theater from July 7 to October 29, with an opening night of July 24.

Dame Julie Walters has been forced to leave the cast of the forthcoming Channel 4 drama Truelove, due to ill health.

The veteran star of stage and screen, 73, was diagnosed with advanced bowel cancer in 2018.

In 2020, she gave an interview in which she revealed that she had got the all-clear and said that she felt like a “different person” after having cancer.

Walters’ role as Phil in the drama Truelove was set to be her return to TV after a seven-year hiatus (she was last seen in the acclaimed 2016 Channel 4 drama National Treasure).

Walters will be replaced on the show by Lindsay Duncan, who now stars opposite The Wire’s Clarke Peters.

The pair play former teenage sweethearts who reunite at a friend’s funeral after many years, and make a pact to help each other experience dignified deaths, rather than slow declines.

Burt Lancaster and Edward G. Robinson are excellent in this adaptation of Arthur Miller’s award-winning Broadway play, about a family torn apart by the denial of dark secrets from the WW2 homefront. Mady Christians is the mother who refuses to accept her son’s death, and Louisa Horton and Howard Duff the brother and sister trying to understand how their father could ship defective war materiel responsible for needless combat deaths. The show is powerful, even with Miller’s social message muted — and director Irving Reis gets it all on screen.

Broadway’s upcoming The Minutes by Tracy Letts has set its large cast with a roster that includes Armie Hammer, Jessie Mueller, Blair Brown and Letts himself in a production directed by Anna D. Shapiro, producers announced today.

The Letts-Shapiro pairing marks their first trip to Broadway since 2007 with their Pulitzer- and Tony-winning August: Osage County.

In recent years, Roundabout Theatre Company has demonstrated a knack for pairing stellar actresses in revivals by acclaimed playwrights, including Annette Bening in Arthur Miller’s “All My Sons” (2019), Jessica Lange in Eugene O’Neill’s “Long Day’s Journey Into Night” (2016), and Diane Lane in Anton Chekhov’s “The Cherry Orchard” (2016).

That trend continues this fall with Marisa Tomei’s return to the stage in Tennessee Williams’s early-career play “The Rose Tattoo.” Set in a predominantly Sicilian community in a Gulf Coast town in 1950, the play centers on Tomei’s Serafina Delle Rose, a widowed seamstress who finds lust after her husband’s death with a man who resembles her late spouse.

This production of “Rose Tattoo,” which originated at the Williamstown Theatre Festival in 2016, officially opened on Broadway at the American Airlines Theatre on October 15. Trip Cullman directs the 18-member ensemble.

Sally Field, Linda Ronstadt, “Sesame Street,” conductor Michael Tilson Thomas and R&B veterans Earth, Wind and Fire have been selected as the 2019 Kennedy Center Honorees.

The kudos will be handed out Dec. 8 at the Kennedy Center Opera House in Washington, D.C. The award to “Sesame Street” marks the first time the prestigious laurel has been bestowed on a TV series. The highlights of the ceremony will air Dec. 15 on CBS as it has for the past 42 years.

The Minutes, a 2018 Pulitzer Prize finalist by Tracy Letts, will make its Broadway premiere next February, reuniting the playwright with his August: Osage County director Anna D. Shapiro, producers Jeffrey Richards and Steve Traxler announced today.

Shapiro, who won the 2008 Tony Award for her direction of Letts’ August, directed the premiere production of The Minutes at Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre in 2017. The 90-minute play features a cast of eleven actors. The Chicago cast included Kevin Anderson, William Petersen, Ian Barford, Francis Guinan and Sally Murphy.

The producers described the play as a “brisk, scathing new comedy about small-town politics and real-world power. Full of chicanery, back-stabbing, manipulation and perhaps some mistruths, the play refracts the current state of America and our politics through a town meeting in the very small fictional city of Big Cherry.”

Call them predictions, opinions or hopes, but here are my thoughts on this year’s Tony Awards races. As usual, the roster of nominees includes a mix of consensus categories (famous last words) and the up-for-grabs. Voting closes today, so the curtain is all but drawn on the campaigning and jockeying and strategizing. Nothing left but the arguments, so add mine to the mix.

By the way, this year Tony Award administrators have pledged to crack down on voters who, in years past, might not have paid strict adherence to the rule that requires voters to see every production in a category. The administration has been keeping track of who saw what, and will disqualify fakers.

Ain’t Too Proud...

“Hadestown” will win dominate the Tony Awards on Sunday (June 9), winning a whopping nine awards, including the coveted prize of Best Musical. On the play side of the aisle, “The Ferryman” will collect six Tonys, including Best Play and for scene stealer Fionnula Flanagan. (See the full list of predicted Tony Awards winners.)

Only two other new tuners, “The Cher Show” and “Tootsie,” will take home Tonys. The former will prevail for Stephanie J. Block‘s riveting portrayal of the music icon and for Bob Mackie‘s costumes, which recreate her signature looks. And the latter will win for Santino Fontana‘s reinterpretation of a role made famous by Dustin Hoffman and the updating of the Oscar-nominated script.

We begin confidently enough, backing Jez Butterworth’s “The Ferryman” for Best Play. “I don’t want to discount the other plays in the category,” explains David, but the epic Irish drama has dominated conversation all season long. I do offer the possibility of a massive upset in the form of “What the Constitution Means to Me.” Heidi Schreck’s word-of-mouth hit crested with buzz at just the right moment. I mention that the show is “so powerful and relevant” in today’s political climate that it has a chance to overtake “The Ferryman.”

The numbers are in: This Broadway season broke attendance and box-office records (nearly $2 billion), which should really juice up the Tony Awards this year. Why? I’d call it Hollywood heat. Stars of movies, TV and YouTube converged on Broadway this year like never before. Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and Walter White (Bryan Cranston) are duking it out with Harry Dunne, the diarrhea king from Dumb and Dumber (Jeff Daniels), for the drama prize as Best Actor. It took three actresses to play one Cher in The Cher Show. And...

While the Drama Desk Awards nominate a slew of off-Broadway fare, the winners invariably come from Broadway. That was once again the case on Sunday when all but one of the 16 champs in the musical races were Broadway productions while it was 8 of 12 on the play side.

This love of all things Broadway even extended to “Hadestown,” which was only in contention for new elements such as cast members after having contended here previously for it Off-Broadway run. It won four awards: Director (Rachel Chavkin), Featured Actor in a Musical (Andre De Shields), Lighting Design, and Sound Design.

One of its main rivals for Best Musical at the Tony Awards is “Tootsie,” which claimed victories for Best Actor (Santino Fontana), Book, Music, and Lyrics. But it was another contender, “The Prom,” that swooped in and claimed Best Musical despite losing all of its other bids.

The winners for the 64th Annual Drama Desk Awards were announced Sunday night with Jez Butterworth’s The Ferryman winning for Outstanding Play and The Prom taking home the trophy for Outstanding Musical.

Other big winners for the night included The Waverly Gallery and Fidder on the Roof winning for Outstanding Revival of a Play and Outstanding Revival of a Musical respectively. Dance Nation received a special Ensemble Award while Montana Levi Blanco was honored with the Sam Norkin Award.

The ceremony was hosted by Michael Urie and took place at at The Town Hall in Manhattan. Steppenwolf Theatre’s Ian Barford will reprise his starring role in Tracy Letts’ Broadway-bound Linda Vista along with most of the cast from the play’s West Coast premiere in January 2019 at the Mark Taper Forum.

Linda Vista will begin previews Sept. 19 for a strictly limited eight-week engagement at Broadway’s Hayes Theater. Opening night is Oct. 10.

In addition to Barford, who plays the lead character Wheeler, the Broadway staging, directed by Dexter Bullard, will feature Sally Murphy, Caroline Neff, Chantal Thuy, Jim True-Frost, Cora Vander Broek and Troy West. Presented exclusively to Deadline for today’s reveal, the fan-selected top winners are Be More Chill, Pretty Woman and American Son, none of which scored Tony noms for best musical or play.

And Aaron Sorkin’s To Kill A Mockingbird, snubbed by Tony as best play, was named just that by audiences.

This year – the awards’ 20th – Be More Chill tops the list with four awards, including Favorite New Musical, Favorite Featured Actor in a Musical (George Salazar), and – in very non-Tony-like categories, Favorite Funny Performance (Stephanie Hsu) and Favorite Onstage Pair (Will Roland and George Salazar).
