Cool picture from the 1950's when movies hadn't gone completely insane!

The Women of Pitcairn Island is a cool picture from the 1950's when movies hadn't gone completely insane! I was lucky enough to buy a nice 16mm print of this picture, and I love it! The pirates who landed ashore looking for their shipmate who has stolen the black pearls are very cool! All good actors, and just the way a bunch of ruff horny men should act! It is ironic that on the Island of Pitcairn in 1999, 2004, 2010 and 2016 there were sexual assault trials involving adult men with children, and young girls! There were reported cases of men having sex with young girls during the 1950's when this film was made. So in some respects the pirate characters were not too far off from the truth! Horny men looking for young women to have sex with! What better place then Pitcairn Island! Some of the characters in this flick were based on real people, such as Thursday October Christian (1790-1831) who was the first son of Fletcher Christian (1764-1793) played in this picture by John Smith (who was the co-star of the television series "Laramie") James Craig who plays the lead pirate Jeb Page was a fine actor and very convincing in this roll! Lynn Bari who plays Maimiti had a long career in pictures going all the way back to the early 1930's. All of the cast members were all fine actors and actresses. People today in December 2020, look back at older pictures and cry "campy" but no matter how much older films may seem campy, they are a million times better than the total trash that Hollywood turns out now, and for the past 45 years with few exceptions. Have a Merry Covid-19 Christmas!

More South Seas escapism from the 1950s

The 1950s seemed to have developed a sub-genre of movies involving men stranded on tropical islands with beautiful women. Titles such as "Untamed Women," "Island of Desire," and "Island of Lost Women" spring to mind. Typical of this sub-genre is "Women of Pitcairn Island" which picks up the Bounty Trilogy one generation later. Pitcairn is now inhabited by the widows and children of the mutineers and tensions are developing. Most of the movie, however, deals with the arrival of some shipwrecked sailors who covet the island's women as well as a cache of black pearls they believe is hidden there.

Those looking for campy fun might should watch the deliciously ludicrous "Untamed Women." "Women of Pitcairn Island," while dated and a bit hokey, plays things too "straight" to offer a lot of laughs. And, somewhat surprisingly, it's sharply photographed in b&w and Regalscope, which means non-letterboxed tapes won't do it justice.

Veteran performers Lynn Bari and James Craig add a touch of professionalism to the proceedings but the "star" of the show is the blandly-named John Smith who plays Fletcher Christian's 17-year-old son. Unfortunately, Smith's attempts to play "youthful" and "unspoiled" come across instead as "not too bright" but he's easy on the eyes and, aside from the last minute of the movie, is bare-chested throughout. This being the prudish '50s, however, he wears his pants high enough to hide his navel in virtually every scene.

Smith played second-lead to Jeff Richards two years later in "Island of Lost Women." Once again he's on a tropical island with beautiful women but whereas "Pitcairn" is an unabashedly heterosexual fantasy, "Lost Women" has homoerotic undertones throughout.

    • Trivia
Just as in the movie, the isle became famous because of rape and sexual desires, incest, polygamy, etc.. Three cases of imprisonment for sex with underage girls were reported in the 1950s.

In 1999, Gail Cox, a police officer from Kent, UK, served on a temporary assignment on Pitcairn, and began uncovering allegations of sexual abuse. When a 15-year-old girl decided to press rape charges in 1999, criminal proceedings (code-named "Operation Unique") were set in motion. The charges included 21 counts of rape, 41 of indecent assault, and two of gross indecency with a child under 14. Over the following two years, police officers in Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom interviewed every woman who had lived on Pitcairn in the past 20 years, as well as all of the accused men. These interviews would reveal stories of girls as young as 3 being sexually assaulted, and as young as 10, being gang raped.

Pastor Neville Tosen, who spent two years on Pitcairn around the turn of the millennium, said that on his arrival, he had been taken aback by the conduct of the children, but he had not immediately realized what was happening. "I noticed worrying signs such as inexplicable mood swings," he said. "It took me three months to realize they were being abused." Tosen tried to bring the matter before the Island Council (the legislative body which doubles as the island's court), but was rebuffed. One councillor told him, "Look, the age of consent has always been 12 and it doesn't hurt them."

A study of island records confirmed anecdotal evidence that most girls bore their first child between the ages of 12 and 15. "I think the girls were conditioned to accept that it was a man's world and once they turned 12, they were eligible," Tosen said. Mothers and grandmothers were resigned to the situation, telling him that their own childhood experience had been the same; they regarded it as just a part of life on Pitcairn. One grandmother wondered what all the fuss was about. Tosen was convinced, however, that the early sexual experience was very damaging to the girls, stating outright, "They can't settle or form solid relationships. They did suffer, no doubt about it."

Sexual assault trials of 2004 - Main article: 2004 Pitcairn Islands sexual assault trial In 2004, charges were laid against seven men living on Pitcairn and six living abroad. This accounted for nearly a third of the male population, and half of the island's adult males. After extensive trials, most of the men were convicted, some with multiple counts of sexual encounters with children. On 25 October 2004, six men were convicted, including Steve Christian, the island's mayor at the time.In 2004, the islanders had about 20 firearms among them, which they surrendered ahead of the sexual assault trials.[38] After the six men lost their final appeal, the British government set up a prison on the island at Bob's Valley.[39][40] The men began serving their sentences in late 2006.
