‘Predator: Killer of Killers’ Review: Thrillingly Transcending History…and the World
Image
Dan Trachtenberg and Joshua Wassung’s Predator: Killer of Killers is just as quick and efficient as the Predators themselves, giving you just enough context around its human characters and how they end up in the monsters’ infrared sights. Specifically, the film tells three stories spanning centuries of hostile extraterrestrial sojourns by Predators—the Yautja, if you’re nasty—to our fragile blue world, thrillingly expanding the series universe.

The first story centers around Ursa (Lindsay Lavanchy), a Viking chieftain trekking halfway across the planet on a bloody revenge tour that catches the attention of a different type of warrior. The second focuses on Kenji (Louis Ozawa), a samurai whose fateful duel with his ninja brother, Kiyoshi (also voiced by Ozawa), gets some extraterrestrial interference. And the third concerns Torres (Rick Gonzalez), a Latino plane mechanic during World War II who takes to the skies when an Allied squadron meets...

Dangerous Animals Offers A Nasty, Brutal Twist On A Steven Spielberg Classic
Image
50 years ago, the general public's view of the ocean — in particular, the presence of sharks within it — changed forever with the release of Steven Spielberg's "Jaws." While shark attack movies had been made for decades prior to Spielberg's adaptation of Peter Benchley's novel, these films tended to fall into the "exotic adventure" category, i.e. films about characters or real-life figures who traveled to far-away lands and encountered dangerous wildlife there. "Jaws" brought the killer shark essentially right to people's doorsteps (something "Saturday Night Live" made reference to in a literal way), conveying that the threat the animals posed wasn't relegated to distant shores. Whether or not this creative decision was irresponsible when it comes to informing the public about actual shark behavior is beside the point; "Jaws" never purported to be a fact-based documentary, but simply a horror/adventure yarn, and it's a ripping great one at that.

Patrick Stewart Channels Picard to Help Relaunch the 80s' Most Iconic Vehicle
Image
Over the years, Sir Patrick Stewart has had his share of iconic roles from Ebenezer Scrooge in the 1999 adaptation of A Christmas Carol, to the 1998 Moby Dick miniseries in which he played Captain Ahab. He has also memorably played Professor Charles Xavier in several films in the MCU, including the X-Men franchise, Logan, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

However, for a generation or two of fans, Patrick Stewart will always be synonymous with the name Jean-Luc Picard. The captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise during all seven seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Stewart reprised his Picard role in the Tng-era’s subsequent feature films and three seasons of Star Trek: Picard. Now, Stewart is seemingly channelling his iconic Trek character in a new spot for the famous car company, DeLorean.

“The Next Frontier”

The spot titled “DeLorean - Next Frontier,” a play on Trek’s “final frontier,...

Legend Brings ‘Deathwatch’ and ‘The Deer Hunter’ to Freeview
Image
Michael Cimino’s The Deer Hunter will headline Legend’s June 2025 slate, as the classic war film makes its debut on the free-to-air genre channel. Scheduled for its first airing on Saturday 28 June, the five-time Academy Award winner will anchor a month of premieres that spans decades and genres, from prestige Hollywood dramas to high-concept science fiction and British cult films.

Originally released in 1978, The Deer Hunter stars Robert De Niro, Christopher Walken and Meryl Streep, and is widely regarded as one of the most significant American films of the 20th century. Set before, during and after the Vietnam War, the film traces the psychological and emotional impact of conflict on a group of steelworkers from Pennsylvania. Cimino’s ambitious and often divisive work won Best Picture and Best Director at the Oscars and remains a key title in any examination of American post-war cinema.

‘Amrum’ Review: Fatih Akin’s Understated Coming-of-Age Tale Is Generous, Classical and Soul-Stirring
Image
Fatih Akin’s poetic and elegantly spare “Amrum” asks us to take interest in a 12-year-old member of the Hitler youth as he cares for his mother in the last days of World War II, and while we’re at it, maybe even to sympathize with him. That won’t be easy for some. But as the story progresses in its patient, perceptive rhythm on the majestically windswept German island of Amrum, it becomes clear that the film isn’t looking for sympathy for the devil — which would be an oversimplification of the purpose at the heart of Akin’s graceful and profound drama.

Co-written by octogenarian German filmmaker Hark Bohm, who was originally supposed to direct the project based on his own childhood memories, the project was ultimately passed to Akin. Under his direction, “Amrum” wants us to engage with the possibility that at such a young age, the...

The orcas of the Strait of Gibraltar are getting their own thriller
Image
Black Tides will be directed by Renny Harlin, director of 1999's Deep Blue Sea and upcoming shark-thriller, Deep Waters. Produced by Nostromo (who will also be producing Harlin's latest return to shark infested waters), the movie, written by Chris Sparling and Ángel Agudo, is inspired by the real-life orca attacks on the boats off the Strait of Gibraltar near Spain.

Here's what we learned about the plot from Deadline:

"The film will tell the story of Rebecca, who reunites with her estranged father, Bill, in sunny Málaga expecting a healing family trip with her young son, Sebastian. Instead, their voyage across the Strait of Gibraltar becomes a nightmare as they’re relentlessly attacked by rogue orcas. Rebecca, confronting deep emotional wounds, must rise as an unlikely hero in a battle for survival."

With an emotionally charged and intriguing storyline, we're excited to see what Harlin can do when he shifts...

“It’s humiliating”: Nick Nolte’s Own Addiction Made a ‘Warriors’ Scene Extremely Difficult to Film That Deserved an Oscar
Image
Some performances leave a mark not because they’re grand or over-the-top but because they’re achingly human. That’s exactly the kind of work that Nick Nolte delivered in Warrior, a movie where he was raw and bruised.

People who’ve watched Nolte in the gritty drama would know that his performance wasn’t just memorable but the emotional backbone of Warrior. For the actor himself, this wasn’t just about slipping into another role, as the character and his emotions were a little too close to real life.

Nick Nolte’s emotional scene in Warrior was deserving of an Oscar Nick Nolte | Yahoo Entertainment

In Warrior, Nick Nolte played Paddy, a broken alcoholic father who is clawing his way to redemption. His character was full of guilt and regret as he desperately tried to make things right with the sons he had once failed.

“It made people uncomfortable”: Nick Nolte Will Never Forget Tom Hardy’s Rawest Performance That Is Still Hard to Watch After 14 Years
Image
Well, some performances don’t just scratch the surface — they rip it open. And if you’ve ever watched Warrior (2011), you know exactly what we mean.

Now, we’ve seen a fair share of tough-guy flicks, broken-dad dramas, and underdog arcs, but there’s something about Gavin O’Connor’s martial arts sports drama that gets under your skin and stays there. Maybe it’s because Nick Nolte, playing Paddy Conlon—a wrecked old man chasing redemption with a whiskey-soaked past—doesn’t feel like he’s acting. And then there’s Tom Hardy — fresh off the radar, not yet the hulking Bane or Venom — bringing a raw, almost uncomfortable intensity that makes your stomach knot.

As Nolte once admitted, Hardy’s performance just made people “uncomfortable”. And 14 years later, it still does.

Tom Hardy’s fury made people uncomfortable — Even Nick Nolte couldn’t rewatch Warrior Tom Hardy in Warrior...

Netflix’s ‘The Life List’ Ending Explained & Full Story: What Happens To Alex Rose And Brad?
Image
Grief is a parasite that sits in a mourner’s chest until they actively release it into the ether. Ask anyone who has grieved a loved one, and most will tell you it never really leaves. This phenomenon plays out in films in different forms: in a thriller (Searching), the grief manifests itself in the protagonist’s frenzied search for a reason for their loss; in an action film (John Wick), it breeds a vengeance in the protagonist, who succumbs to violence to release their grief; and in a romance (P.S. I Love You), it becomes a silent spectator to the insurmountable change wrought in the lead who is left behind. Transformation, however, is an inevitable outcome that comes to define the grieving protagonist. In recent years of global uncertainty in the aftermath of the pandemic, shows like Ricky Gervais’s Afterlife, Dead to Me, and Fleabag have charted new...

The Life List (2025) ‘Netflix’ Movie Review: Another Generic Rom-Com Masquerading as a Poignant Coming-of-Age Film
Adam Brooks
Perhaps the most interesting fact about Adam Brooks’s Netflix release “The Life List” (2025) is that it was based on a novel. That novel—Lori Nelson Spielman’s 2013 bestseller—was translated into 27 languages across 30 countries, a level of international success that makes the film’s lifeless adaptation even more baffling. A minor character in the movie quips, “There are facts, and then there’s what’s true,” but the truth here is that this narrative is so superficial and weirdly tedious that it never makes for compelling viewing.

The film opens with Alex, the privileged daughter of a wealthy woman dying of cancer, who abandons her passion to take up a role in her mother’s company. After her mother’s death, Alex is stunned to learn that she has been fired and temporarily cut off from her inheritance. The catch? She can only claim what’s hers once she...

'The Life List' Review: Rom-Com Enchants Despite Shaky Execution
Image
Family secrets, a love triangle, and self-discovery are just part of the creative tapestry in The Life List, an endearing tale full of “aw shucks” that’s designed to warm hearts. It will, even though the film struggles to land in any one genre. It’s a rom-com, it's a tragic family drama, it’s a mission-driven story with a goal in mind, it’s a coming-of-age story, it’s a "yas queen" girlboss flick, it's… not quite sure what it is. It’s all that and filled with attractive actors, so there's great eye candy all around. And there’s Connie Britton, playing a matriarch determined to make sure her daughter gets her life on track. This film is loaded with warm fuzzies, and the ever-reliable Britton is a believable emotional boost, adding an extra touch of warmth in a story already overflowing with it.

‘The Life List’ Review: Sofia Carson’s Rote Romantic Drama for Netflix Inspires Jeers, Not Cheers
Image
With smarter streamlining, “The Life List” could’ve been impactful. As is, the two-hour-plus Netflix original suffers by attempting to blend two predictable storylines into one: a reductive romantic search for The One crammed in alongside a drama about a directionless woman encouraged by her dead mother to rediscover her joie de vivre in order to claim her inheritance. Not only does its narrative momentum stall all too frequently, but our heroine’s completion quests lack the basics to deliver rousing feelings. Worse still, it’s frustratingly more concerned with telling us how she’s financially able to afford having a delayed quarter-life identity crisis in New York City than it is with giving her journey toward enlightenment any genuine, satiating sense of internal transformation.

Droll Alex (Sofia Carson) is stuck in her life, only she doesn’t realize it. She bides her free time in an unglamourous city loft apartment with her longterm,...

Alexander Skarsgård and James Marsden in Chiens de paille (2011)
Nihilistic, anarchic, repugnant: Sam Peckinpah’s 10 best films – ranked!
Alexander Skarsgård and James Marsden in Chiens de paille (2011)
The revered but divisive American director, who died in 1984, would have turned 100 this week. We rate his greatest movies, from Straw Dogs to The Wild Bunch

After making his name as a director of westerns, Sam Peckinpah was given his first shot at making a major studio film – an epic about a tyrannical cavalry officer (Charlton Heston) leading an expedition into Mexico. The production set a template for later Peckinpah films – heavy drinking, personality clashes, battles with the suits, and a final cut not matching the director’s vision. Major Dundee was a victim of its chaotic ambition and it’s easy to see why it flopped on release: even in the 2005 restored version, it is hopelessly unfocused, taking in Dundee’s Moby-Dick-like mission to track down an Apache chief, the dynamics of the US civil war, encounters with the French army and an unconvincing romantic interlude. But it’s interestingly flawed,...

'In the Heart of the Sea' brings a marine myth to life in a different way
Image
The celebrated director, Ron Howard, proves his directorial prowess yet once again through visually compelling storytelling of an almost forgotten fantasy. In the Heart of the Sea, a masterpiece from the Angels & Demons director, will keep you hooked to your screens from the beginning till the end.

It is heartwarming to find out that the all-time classic Moby Dick was based on true accounts of the whaling sea vessel called the Essex that sank. In fact, the Black Doves actor Ben Whishaw who portrayed the author Herman Melville, went to interview the last survivor of the Essex so that he could pen down the legend of rampaging white whale for all of us.

While the storyline is gripping, the other factors that make the movie great cannot be ignored. The cinematography, make-up, and costumes, as well as special effects really set the correct tone of the era in which...

“Sit on the throne, shout a bit”: Anthony Hopkins Says MCU Is “Pointless Acting”

A few years before superhero fatigue kicked in, it seemed like every big-name actor in Hollywood was getting cast as a superhero. Chris Hemsworth and Tom Holland's 'In the Heart of the Sea' Overlooks the Darkest Part of Its True Story
Image
In the Heart of the Sea is a film obsessed with the true legends that inspire fiction, which is ironic, considering Ron Howard's maritime epic itself is a fictionalized retelling of real historical events. Framed around a young Herman Melville (Ben Whishaw) desperate to learn the truth about the sinking of a famed whaling vessel, the Essex, the movie establishes its central tragedy's significance by linking the recollections of survivor Thomas Nickerson (Brendan Gleeson) to the creation of Melville's greatest classic, Moby Dick.

Why In The Heart Of The Sea Changes The Survivor Herman Melville Really Interviewed To Thomas Nickerson
Image
The 2015 movie In the Heart of the Sea, starring Tom Holland and Chris Hemsworth, is now streaming on Netflix, leading many to wonder why several changes were made to the true story behind In the Heart of the Sea. In the Heart of the Sea was directed by Ron Howard and released on December 11th, 2015. The movie is based on the incredible true story of the sailors who survived the sinking of the whaling ship the Essex in 1821, which left multiple men lost at sea for more than 90 days (only 5 of whom survived).

This real-life event was the inspiration for Herman Melville's classic novel Moby-Dick, and In The Heart of the Sea has a direct tie to that story as well. In the movie, Ben Whishaw plays Herman Melville, who interviews the older version of Thomas Nickerson. However, this is one of many changes In The Heart of the...

What Really Happened To The Men Who Stayed On The Island After In The Heart Of The Sea

In the Heart of the Sea is a movie about a harrowing maritime true story. It was a $94M box office disappointment upon release. Despite this, In the Heart of the Sea has unexpectedly become a global Netflix hit a decade later.

Directed by Ron Howard, the movie is based on a book of the same name by Nathaniel Philbrick, published in 2000. Although this source text has 71 mentions of cannibalism, the movie downplays how bad it was, along with other big details missing from the In the Heart of the Sea true story. However, the movie portrays the courage of the survivors well. Three such survivors stayed on Henderson Island.

Why Owen Chase Doesn't Kill The Whale When It Returns During In The Heart Of The Sea
Image
In the Heart of the Sea is about a crew of whalers, but the movie ends with Owen Chase (Chris Hemsworth) allowing the whale to live. In the Heart of the Sea is based on the terrifying true story of the sinking of The Essex, a whaling ship that had previously been considered a lucky vessel. An enormous whale attacked the ship, destroying it and leaving its crew stranded in the ocean, turning to cannibalism to stay alive. Two of the men who survived The Essex sinking later wrote memoirs of the event, one of which would inspire Moby Dick.

While viewers watching In the Heart of the Sea will likely recognize the themes and story of Moby Dick, there are several differences between Moby Dick and In the Heart of the Sea, and these begin with the crew. The characters in In the Heart of the Sea are based...

In the Heart of the Sea tells the unbelievable true story of the sinking of the Essex whaling ship in 1821. In The Heart Of The Sea True Story: The Essex Crew Might Have Avoided So Many Brutal Deaths If They Hadn't Feared 1 Ironic Threat
Image
In the Heart of the Sea chronicles the true events of the 1820 sinking of the whaling ship Essex, with some details left out, including one that might have saved more of the crew in real life. The 2015 historical adventure drama movie directed by Ron Howard is based on Nathaniel Philbrick's 2000 non-fiction book In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex. The novel recounts the story of the Essex sinking and all the men who survived it. However, the film passes over one crucial piece of information from the true story.

In August 1819, the Essex set sail from Nantucket on a two-and-a-half-year journey to hunt whales. A little over a year into their voyage, a whale attacked the ship, killing many of the crew and forcing the survivors to retreat to smaller boats. Unfortunately, they were thousands of miles from the nearest land, stranded in the Southern Pacific Ocean.

Chris Hemsworth & Tom Holland's $94M Box Office Disappointment Becomes Netflix Global Hit 10 Years Later

Chris Hemsworth and Tom Holland's $94 million box office disappointment has become a global Netflix hit 10 years later. Chris Hemsworth and Tom Holland’s 2015 survival drama In the Heart of the Sea is now trending on Netflix, and its heartbreaking true story provides a good reminder to watch Netflix’s own similar film from January 2024. Cillian Murphy, Tom Holland, and Chris Hemsworth's 2015 Action Adventure Is Finding New Life on Netflix

Ron Howard has made a number of great movies. Apollo 13, A Beautiful Mind, Splash, Night Shift, Parenthood, and The Paper are all masterpieces of their respective genres, and have emerged as time-honored classics that are worth revisiting for anyone interested in seeing why certain films resonate with a generation. He also has a few films so disastrous that they are worthy of extended academic analysis, such as the derided live-action remake of How The Grinch Stole Christmas, Hillbilly Elegy, and the dull conspiracy thriller, The Da Vinci Code. Compared to these incredible highs and mind-boggling lows, 2015’s In the Heart of the Sea feels like a complete and utter oddity because of how forgettable it was. It’s a perfectly adequate, otherwise-insignificant historical epic that just so happens to feature excellent performances by Chris Hemsworth, Tom Holland, and Cillian Murphy, who bring to life the real story of a...

In The Heart Of The Sea Leaves Out A Wild True Story Detail About Owen Chase & Matthew Joy After The Sinking
Image
Ron Howard’s 2015 drama In the Heart of the Sea tackles the true story of the 1820 sinking of the whaling ship Essex, but leaves out some unexpected developments after the survivors’ rescue. In the Heart of the Sea’s cast is led by Chris Hemsworth, Tom Holland, Cillian Murphy, and Benjamin Walker, portraying the real-life crew members whose ship is wrecked during an encounter with a large sperm whale. For those who survive the initial wreck, their journey to rescue is a harrowing ordeal that results in cannibalism, with the men later still being haunted by these experiences at sea.

Though many of the crew members were strangers when they set off on the Essex, that wasn’t the case for Owen Chase (Hemsworth) and Matthew Joy (Murphy). The movie reveals that the two were almost like brothers, having sailed together since they were boys. Therefore, when Joy was dying...

A Forgotten Chris Hemsworth Flop Became An Instant Hit On Netflix
Image
It feels like Chris Hemsworth has been a full-fledged movie star for a long time, but he's a young pup compared to his "The Avengers" co-stars. While Hemsworth was well known in his native Australia after a series of television appearances in the 2000s, he didn't make his Hollywood feature debut until 2009 as the father of Captain James T. Kirk in J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek." So, he was only two whole years into his film acting career when he landed his thus far defining role as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Since then, he's worked with a couple of legendary auteurs ("Blackhat" with Michael Mann and "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" with George Miller), but for the most part he's clearly defined, perhaps even a tad typecast, as Thor.

Now that the MCU appears to be in a calling-all-cars brand conundrum in the wake of its post-"Avengers: Endgame...

Every Movie Starring Chris Hemsworth On Netflix
Image
Chris Hemsworth is taking Netflix by storm, and not just because of his Netflix original movies. The actor rose to prominence in his home country when he starred as Kim Hyde in the Australian soap opera Home and Away from 2004 to 2007. However, Hemsworth gained worldwide recognition when he joined the cast of the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Thor in 2011. He played the titular character, of course, and would go on to appear as Thor in ten more movies in the MCU, four of them his own.

Chris Hemsworth's next projects include Stuntnuts: The Movie (the third film in the Kick-Ass series), Crime 101 (a crime movie also starring Mark Ruffalo and Halle Berry), and Extraction 3.

Although he has continued to play the God of Thunder in the MCU many years after Thor (with a rumored fifth movie in the works), Hemsworth has experienced success outside of Marvel. He has starred in several action films,...

In The Heart Of The Sea: What Happened To The Real Owen Chase
Image
In the Heart of the Sea stars Chris Hemsworth as Owen Chase, the first mate on board the doomed whaling ship, The Essex, the sinking of which would later inspire Moby Dick. While Moby Dick is not a true story, the disaster of The Essex was a real historical event and a harrowing experience for the sailors. In the Heart of the Sea depicts this event and tells the story of the men who survived The Essex sinking from the point of view of Thomas Nickerson (played at different ages by Tom Holland and Brendan Gleeson), the cabin boy, and youngest survivor.

Though the cast of In the Heart of the Sea includes acclaimed actors like Cillian Murphy and Gleeson, the movie received mixed reviews. The storytelling and visuals have been highly praised, along with the performances of the actors, with Hemsworth and the then-newcomer Holland being especially commended. On the other hand,...

The Astonishing True Story Behind ‘In the Heart of the Sea,’ Explained
Image
Legendary Hollywood director Ron Howard helmed the riveting historical drama In the Heart of the Sea, which touts a star-studded cast of cinema's finest performers, led by Chris Hemsworth, Tom Holland, and Cillian Murphy, with the big-budget extravaganza chronicling the harrowing true story of the Essex whaling ship, which tragically sunk in 1820 after it was viciously attacked by a mammoth sperm whale 2,000 nautical miles from the coast of South America. Of the 20 men in the crew, only eight survived being stranded on both land and sea.

The sinking of Essex and first mate Owen Chase's gripping personal account of the horrific ordeal (which he published in 1821) went on to inspire one of the literary world's most revered masterpieces: Herman Melville's epic classic Moby-Dick. Though Howard's film failed to dominate the box office upon its release, it still captures the terror and uncertainty the Essex crew members faced while...

In The Heart Of The Sea: What Whale Oil Is Used For
Image
The dangerous whaling expedition at the center of In the Heart of the Sea might seem strange to a modern audience as whaling is such a controversial practice, but whale oil was once so prized that sailors risked their lives to get it. In the Heart of the Sea has an all-star cast and tells the story of the sinking of The Essex, the whaling ship that would go on to inspire Moby Dick. In the Heart of the Sea is one of Chris Hemsworth's best movies, and he plays the ship's first mate, Owen Chase.

Chase was based on a real person, like most characters in In the Heart of the Sea, including its narrator, Thomas Nickerson, who was the cabin boy and youngest survivor of the shipwreck. While the writers have taken liberties to add tension between the characters, In the Heart of the Sea is a...

The True Story That Inspired In The Heart Of The Sea
Image
The 2015 movie, In The Heart Of The Sea, is inspired by a thrilling true story of survival and bravery. Directed by Ron Howard, the movie explores how the crew of a whaling ship face a grueling battle for survival at sea after their ship is sunk by a whale. The movie is based on the 2000 book, In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex, by Nathaniel Philbrick and explores how the events of the ship's sinking and the crew's fight to stay alive inspired the creation of the 1851 novel, Moby-Dick, by Herman Melville.

The cast of In The Heart Of The Sea includes Chris Hemsworth, Cillian Murphy, and Tom Holland, and the movie explores how the crew were forced to put their differences aside and use all of their skills and experiences to survive their ship's sinking. Chris Hemsworth & Tom Holland's $94M Adventure Movie Is Quickly Climbing Netflix's Charts 10 Years Later
Image
Chris Hemsworth and Tom Holland's forgotten adventure movie is a streaming hit, climbing Netflix’s charts ten years after its $94 million theatrical run. That was a disappointing box office number for the film that first teamed them up, but Hemsworth and Holland would later know massive success as main players in the money-making juggernaut that is the MCU.

Hemsworth was first to make his way to the Marvel family, playing the mythical hero Thor as a solo act in 2011, and then as a member of the Avengers. Holland followed in 2016, playing Peter Parker for the first time in the blockbuster Captain America: Civil War, and later joining Hemsworth again in the massive era-wrapping Infinity War and Endgame two-parter. With $31.1 billion (and counting) in worldwide grosses, the MCU has been a runaway success, catapulting Hemsworth and Holland to international stardom.

Chris Hemsworth & Tom Holland's Pre-mcu Team Up 'In the Heart of the Sea' is Streaming on Netflix
Image
Netflix has a strange way of making even the most unlikely movies a success many years after they failed to capture attention on their original release. That has happened again with the easily-forgotten Ron Howard historical action adventure In the Heart of the Sea. The 2015 movie, which dramatizes the events that would go on to inspire Herman Melville to write the classic novel, Moby Dick, has surprisingly surfaced at number two on the Netflix chart.

The story of a ship’s encounter with a sperm whale in 1820 may not sound like it could be a challenger to the likes of festive thriller Carry-On – which is still holding onto the top spot on Netflix after several weeks – but it does have a few things going for it…including Chris Hemsworth, Cillian Murphy and Tom Holland. Yes, the film that brings together Marvel’s Thor and Spider-Man for an adventure of a very different kind,...

Chris Hemsworth & Tom Holland's 10-Year-Old Sea Story Arrives on Netflix
Image
An overlooked Tom Holland movie has just arrived on Netflix. Co-starring Chris Hemsworth, In the Heart of the Sea is now available to stream on the platform.

Released in 2015, In the Heart of the Sea is based on Nathaniel Philbrick's 2000 non-fiction book In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex, which detailed the sinking of the American whaling ship Essex in 1820. The event is notable for serving as inspiration for the beloved 1851 novel Moby-Dick, written by Herman Melville, who appears in the movie, played by Ben Whishaw. Hemsworth stars as Essex first mate Owen Chase, with Holland appearing as cabin boy Thomas Nickerson. Brendan Gleeson stars as an older Nickerson who recounts the sinking of the Essex to Whishaw's Melville.

Cillian Murphy & Tom Holland's $100M Adventure Movie About The True Story That Inspired One Of The Greatest Books Of All Time Is Now On Netflix
Image
Years before Cillian Murphy won an Oscar for Oppenheimer and Tom Holland's Marvel movies broke box office records, the two renowned actors starred together in In the Heart of the Sea, which is now streaming on Netflix. The 2015 historical adventure film featured many other notable stars. However, Murphy and Holland are undoubtedly two of the most in-demand actors in 2025, with Murphy coming off his Academy Award win for Best Actor and Holland's everlasting success with Spider-Man and beyond.

Now, Murphy is set to return for 28 Years Later, the third film in the 28 Days Later series, as an executive producer. Murphy will also reprise his iconic Peaky Blinders role in The Immortal Man, a continuation of the BBC show. Meanwhile, Holland is among the star-studded cast of Christopher Nolan's next movie, an adaptation of The Odyssey. And Holland will return in the upcoming untitled fourth Spider-Man film.

Chris Hemsworth's Moby Dick Origin Story Movie With 42% Rt Score Is Coming To Netflix Next Month
Image
Chris Hemsworth has become a mainstay in multiple blockbuster franchises. After playing George Kirk in the 2009 film Star Trek, Hemsworth demonstrated that he could be a mainstream film protagonist through his debut playing Thor in the 2011 film of the same name. From there, Hemsworth was incorporated into both the Thor sequels as well as the mainline MCU Avengers movies. This role helped catapult him into other franchises, including Ghostbusters and Men in Black. This year alone, Hemsworth made his way into the Mad Max and Transformers franchises through roles in Furiosa and Transformers One.

Though franchises compose a portion of Hemsworth's career, he has also been in several one-off films. Some of these movies include projects with major directors, such as Ron Howard, with whom he worked on the 2013 film Rush. Not all of these one-off movies have been met with incredible reviews, such as the mixed-reviewed war drama 12 Strong.

Clint Eastwood Starred In One Of Morgan Freeman's Favorite Westerns
Image
Clint Eastwood might've appeared in 14 films after "Unforgiven" but his Oscar-winning directorial effort really does feel like a fond farewell to the genre that defined his career in front of the camera. For many, his stint as Will Munny, a worn down gunman making one last stand, sits as one of his finest and he could've hung up his acting hat for good there and then in one of the best Western movies of all time. For his co-star, Morgan Freeman, though, there's an earlier role rooted in Eastwood's time in the Old West that outshines even that.

Speaking to Rotten Tomatoes in 2023, the five-time Oscar nominee (one of which he won for his performance in Eastwood's "Million Dollar Baby"), was asked about his favorite films. Of his five truly fascinating choices, one of them was Eastwood's own cold-blooded 1976 cowboy movie "The Outlaw Josey Wales." The film saw Easwood play the titular character,...

‘Bob Dylan’ Interrupts John Mulaney’s ‘SNL’ Promo, Has No Clue How to Write a Promo | Video
Image
John Mulaney’s promo for his “Saturday Night Live” hosting gig this weekend gets crashed by ‘Bob Dylan,’ who lends his Nobel Prize-winning talent to write some very unusual cue cards.

In the video, which was released on Wednesday, Mulaney becomes puzzled as his intro turns into a reminiscence about running into music producer Shooter Jennings in Luxembourg.

“Sorry. Uh, who’s the writer on this promo?” he asks as the camera cuts to James Austin Johnson as the folk icon, who says he’s been hired as the cue card writer since “it’s Season 50 and they’re busting out the big guns.”

The former “SNL” writer points out that the intro, which name-dropped Guns N’ Roses guitarist Duff McKagan, was “a little overwritten.” Mulaney adds, “They’re normally, like, pretty punchy. Maybe we could do something like, ‘Hey, I’m back in New York.'”

Dylan then riffs...

John Mulaney Receives Notes From ‘Bob Dylan’ in ‘Saturday Night Live’ Promo
Image
Saturday Night Live episode promos are often about 20 seconds in length and feature little more than the host, the musical guest, a cast member or two, and a very lame joke that fades from memory about 12 seconds after you hear it, at best. But leave it to John Mulaney to put together a nearly two-minute promo that’s funnier than just about anything that’s aired on the actual show this season, as much as we’ve enjoyed Dana Carvey’s brilliant Joe Biden impersonation.

It begins with Mulaney reading from a cue card.

‘SNL’ Promo: John Mulaney Joined By Surprise Guest As James Austin Johnson Unveils Absolutely Sweet Impression
Image
In maybe the best Saturday Night Live promo of the season so far, John Mulaney is joined by a surprise guest who wants to contribute some rather intricate, obscure and arcana-filled bits of writing for the new spot.

“Oh my God, Bob Dylan! What are you doing here?” Mulaney asks, surprised to see the rock icon in the studio.

Cut to cast member James Austin Johnson, trading his usual Trump drag for a wicked impression of latter-day Dylan.

“Season 50, they’re busting out the big guns,” this Dylan says in that unmistakable nasal drawl. “I won a Nobel in literature.”

So Mulaney agrees to give “Bob” a try, reading a cue card with the great one’s words: “Hey, it’s great to be back in the Big Apple. Herman Melville was born here, author of Moby Dick. That’s the ultimate fish story if you ask me.”

“Yeah, see that’s still off,...

‘Shock Induction’ – Meta Mind Control Manifesto Is Chuck Palahniuk’s Strongest Work in Years [Review]
Image
Chuck Palahniuk’s latest novel is an experimental and subversive coming of age satire that skewers an increasingly commodified society through hallucinogenic hubris.

“Clarity is paramount. Even when the goal is to create confusion.”

Chuck Palahniuk is one of this generation’s most explosive and subversive storytellers, but there have been increasingly diminishing returns for his more recent works, many of which have even felt like parodies of what’s expected from a Palahniuk novel. Palahniuk has released more than 20 novels, novellas, and short story collections in under three decades, which reflects a constant desire to speak to the world and eschew it. He’s not a writer who necessarily hoards ideas, which can sometimes lead to more hits than misses. That being said, when the hits hit, it’s really something special; and Shock Induction, Palahniuk’s latest novel, hits hard.

Shock Induction is a pitch black, postmodern social...

The Real Reason Ron Howard Stopped Acting
Image
Ron Howard's acting career was part of a family legacy, as his father, Rance, was already a prolific performer when he was born in 1954. Howard's first professional acting credit is for the 1959 feature "The Journey," with Yul Brynner and Deborah Kerr. That same year, the five-year-old Ron infiltrated TV, appearing as precocious moppets in multiple hot shows.

More notably, beginning in 1960, Ron -- credited as Ronny -- began starring on "The Andy Griffith Show," playing Opie, the son of Griffith's character. Howard would appear in 243 of the show's 249 episodes, over the course of eight seasons. While appearing on "Andy Griffith," Howard would continue to be a TV presence, appearing in dozens of additional hot shows, as well as several notable B-pictures.

Even in his teen years, Howard continued to act, proving that he was no mere child prodigy. He appeared in George Lucas' nostalgia film "American Graffiti," and...
