Peter Sarsgaard Calls for Unity in a Divided America at Karlovy Vary Film Festival Opening: ‘There Is No Going It Alone’
Image
Actors Peter Sarsgaard and Vicky Krieps were honored at the opening of the 59th edition of the Karlovy Vary Film Festival Friday, with Sarsgaard calling for “collective action” in the U.S. in the face of division.

Karlovy Vary presented the Kviff President’s Award to Sarsgaard, who is the winner of the Volpi Cup at the Venice Film Festival, and a nominee for an Emmy and a Golden Globe.

Receiving the award, he said: “Making a film is a collective action […] any actor will tell you that good work is only possible in an environment that supports it […] There is no going it alone.”

He continued: “As my country retreats from its global responsibilities and tries to go it alone, it is also being divided into factions from within, factions of politics, gender, sexuality, race, Jews split over the war. But when there’s a common enemy, there is no going it alone.

Karlovy Vary to Tribute Stellan Skarsgård, Vicky Krieps, Dakota Johnson, and Peter Sarsgaard
Image
The 59th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (July 4-12) boasts not one but two competitions, the Crystal Globe and Proxima, curated by artistic director Karel Och under the supervision of executive director Kryštof Mucha. The festival is the main summer event in the country, which attracts many sponsors and patrons who want to attend, and faces fewer financial hardships than such festivals as Berlin, Toronto, and Sundance.

Last year, 130 films were shown and 140,000 tickets sold. There is little room for growth, given the limited venues, from the many screening rooms at the festival hub, the Hotel Thermal, where jurors hang out between screenings, to the colorful arthouse Kino Drahomira, named after a revered Czech woman director.

The Central European festival falls between Cannes and Venice, and programs many films in its Crystal Globe Competition that did not make the cut at Cannes, as well as films that weren’t yet finished.

Elvis Presley’s ‘Sunset Boulevard’ Box Set to Anthologize Seventies L.A. Recordings
Image
A new box set will examine Elvis Presley’s third act, collecting rare highlights from his L.A. recording sessions between 1970 and 1975. Sunset Boulevard, out Aug. 1, includes 89 rarities, more than half of which have never come out officially in the U.S., across five discs.

A preview of what the box set holds, “Burning Love (Take Two),” finds Presley’s band sounding groovy and funky, with lots of wah-wah on the guitar, as the King finds his footing with the vocal performance. He sang the more familiar hit version with more vim and vigor,...

‘Anatomy of a Fall’ Producer Marie-Ange Luciani Sets Next Projects by Alain Guiraudie, Monia Chokri, Hélène Rosselet-Ruiz, Jean-Gabriel Periot (Exclusive)
Image
Even after winning an Oscar, a Palme d’Or and six Cesar awards with Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall,” French producer Marie-Ange Luciani isn’t resting on her laurels. The Paris-based producer, who runs the company Les Films de Pierre, still strives to work with emerging filmmakers and newcomers, such as Laura Wandel, whose second feature, “Adam’s Sake,” opened this year’s Cannes Critics Week to warm reviews. She’s also cultivated relationships with established auteurs, such as Robin Campillo, who won Cannes’ 2017 Jury Prize with “Bpm (Beats Per Minute)” and opened Directors’ Fortnight this year with “Enzo,” which he finished after his close friend Laurent Cantet, the helmer of the Palme d’Or winning “The Class,” died before he could finish the drama.

Aside from developing Triet’s follow up to “Anatomy of a Fall,” Luciani is looking ahead at a busy 2026.

She’ll next work...

It marks the actress’s second collaboration with the 25-year-old, self-taught director after starring in his second 2022 feature Toni about a single mother of five, contemplating a new life as her children leave home,

He’s really obsessed with cinema and has so many references and directors that he loves… which really enriches what he does,” says Cottin of Ambrosioni, who has cited influences such as Hirokazu Kore-Eda and Edward Yang in past interviews.

Out of Love also tackles themes of motherhood but in a more somber fashion.

Cottin plays a successful, self-contained career woman with no desire to have children, who suddenly finds her...

David Lynch: A Tribute to Cinema’s Greatest Dreamer (1946-2025)
Image
On January 15th, 2025, we lost one of cinema’s most imaginative minds. David Lynch, the man who turned dreams into films and ordinary moments into something extraordinary, passed away at 78. For decades, Lynch showed us the power of storytelling—how it could be raw, emotional, and downright nightmarish, yet still somehow beautiful.

Lynch wasn’t just a filmmaker but an artist and a dreamer—and sometimes just a man reporting the local weather from his office. Born on January 20, 1946, in Missoula, Montana, Lynch originally studied painting before his fascination with moving images pulled him into filmmaking. His work often straddled the line between dream and reality, crafting worlds that felt deeply personal and moving, all the while confusing the hell out of even his most hardcore fans.

As with our Editor-In-Chief, Chris Bumbray, my introduction to his work came through Lost Highway, a movie that fell into my lap at just the right time.

25 best Elvis Presley songs ranked
Image
A couple of days ago I presented my editor with the brilliant idea of ranking Elvis Presley‘s songs to honor his birthday on January 8. Being a Mississippi girl, and having spent almost 30 years of that time living in the town of his birth, I am aware of his huge catalogue of hits, but picking just 25 out of such a variety proved to be more challenging than I anticipated. It has also been a reminder of the enormous impact that this boy from a small town made across three entertainment mediums and across several genres of music.

Born January 8, 1935, in Tupelo, Ms, Presley spent his first 13 years there, with his interest in music sparking from a guitar gifted to him, church hymns and local hillbilly singer Mississippi Slim. After the family moved to Memphis, Tn, in 1948, Presley was surrounded by many different styles of music, including country, hillbilly, gospel and blues,...

Elvis Presley: Top 10 Movies Ranked Worst to Best
Image
On August 16, 1977, the world lost iconic performer Elvis Presley, who died at the young age of 42. Presley excelled in many media, from music to television to films and the concert stage, and he became a beloved cultural king worldwide. In music, he was nicknamed the “King of Rock and Roll,” but that genre was not his sole claim to musical significance. Presley performed and was influenced by a number of genres, including country, rockabilly, pop, blues, gospel, and rhythm and blues. In his career, Presley won three Grammy Awards (all for gospel music and none for rock) plus received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1971.

Although he got his start performing rockabilly, the Tupelo-born, Memphis-raised Presley gradually expanded his sphere of influence to include film, television and the concert stage. His appearances on television in the 1950s, in particular on “The Ed Sullivan Show,” caused a storm of controversy about...

‘Queens’ Director Klaudia Reynicke on Making a Film About Peru’s Political History: ‘People Are Still Very Traumatized’
Image
When working together on “Queens,” a period piece set in 1992 Peru, director Klaudia Reynicke and her director of photography Diego Romero found themselves having to confront the country’s tense political climate. This especially came into focus when filming the street protest scenes.

Reynicke had to find a workaround when it came to featuring communist drawings on the walls: “That’s something you can’t do in Peru because people are still very traumatized by the terrorists who were Maoist. So we had to think of specific scenes that we had to bring to Europe and do post-production special effects,” she says.

The film, previously released as “Reinas,” is Switzerland’s entry in the Oscars International Feature race and follows two sisters (Abril Gjurinovic and Luana Vega) and their family who find themselves torn between leaving their home country and staying after their absent father, Carlos (Gonzalo Molina), re-enters their lives.

Every Song Elvis Presley Performed In The 1968 Comeback Special
Image
Return of the King: The Fall and Rise of Elvis Presley is Netflix's newest musical documentary, examining Elvis's tumultuous career and highlighting some of the songs he performed in his famous 1968 comeback special. The 1968 Elvis comeback special was a pivotal moment in his career, seeing him return to the stage after years of working in the film industry at the request of his manager, Colonel Tom Parker. Feeling dissatisfied with the lack of artistry in his movies, the special was a return to form for the iconic singer.

Though some of Elvis Presley's best movies, such as Viva Las Vegas, are considered classics, Elvis is known best in pop culture history for his influence on music. The 2022 biopic, Elvis, examines the toxic relationship between the star and Tom Parker, who pushed him toward his more commercial appeal. With great music from bands like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones dominating the industry,...

Elvis Presley's Relationship With The Beatles Explained
Image
Netflix's Return of the King: The Fall and Rise of Elvis Presley takes a deeper look into tumultuous periods of the singer's life, including his notable meeting with The Beatles during a complicated point in his career. After graduating high school in 1953, Elvis started his music career with his first studio album released in 1956. That same year, Elvis made his movie debut, appearing in Love Me Tender. His star continued to rise, but his career was halted in 1958 when he was drafted into the Army.

Elvis Presley spent two years in the Army, a period clouded in insecurity and worry that his fans would have forgotten about him. During that same time, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Ringo Starr, and George Harrison formed The Beatles. Like Elvis, they attracted a younger crowd, at least at first. As the years followed and their popularity spread beyond the UK, it's no question...

How Many Movies Elvis Presley Did During His Acting Career
Image
Netflix's Return of the King: The Fall and Rise of Elvis Presley revisits that period in Presleys career when he was at a crossroads. Converted seven years previously from singer to movie star at the behest of his influential manager, Colonel Tom Parker, Presley was dissatisfied and restless. Elvis Presley's movie roles had become plastic, fake, and unreal, and he yearned to get back to singing again. With Elvis having taken the musical world by storm in 1956, Parker had been quick to capitalize on his new cash cow's box-office looks and charisma and signed him up for his first movie, Love Me Tender.

The film was panned by critics, but adored by Presley's legion of devoted and mostly female fans. Three movies with Elvis Presley as an actor dropped over the next two years, culminating in King Creole in 1958, before Presley was drafted into the U.S. Army and shipped abroad.

How Fox Stole Elvis Presley's Big Screen Debut Out From Under Paramount
Image
Thanks to Baz Luhrmann's electrifying 2022 biopic "Elvis," fans new and old (some very old at this point) have enthusiastically delved into the cultural icon's past to get a more nuanced understanding of how this Tennessee-born mama's career took so many unexpected turns before he collapsed in a pharmaceutically-induced heap at the age of 42.

Every chapter of Presley's life is packed with decisions both brilliant and personally/professionally self-destructive. Indeed, his tragic arc might just be the definitive showbiz cautionary tale. His was an incandescent (if highly derivative) talent that attracted opportunists and admirers; he was treated as a product, and, thus, had an awful tendency to treat those who genuinely loved him with the respect and tenderness they deserved.

Speaking of tenderness, Presley's value as an entertainment commodity was, at its early peak, so dizzyingly high that he could work around his newly signed contract with Paramount Pictures...

Dennis Quaid, at 70, Is Having More Fun Now Than When He Was “Young and Hungry”
Image
After Dennis Quaid accepted CinemaCon’s cinema icon award during the closing night Big Screen Achievement Awards, host Kevin Frazier surprised the veteran actor with a birthday cake as the crowd inside the Colosseum sang “Happy Birthday.”

Quaid turned 70 on Tuesday, and it was a fitting celebration for the star, who was feeling particularly reflective about where he’s at in his life and career at this chapter. “I’m on my sixth decade in this wonderful business,” Quaid said in accepting the honor, which arrives as he has The Long Game in theaters this weekend and the release of Reagan on the horizon. “To tell you the truth, I really do feel like I have more fun. I enjoy it now more than when I was young and hungry — not trying to get anywhere. I do it because I love it and that makes me kind of the luckiest guy on Earth,...

Reexamining Elvis’s Last (and Worst-Reviewed) Movie before He Died
Image
Elvis's film career declined due to his manager's focus on money rather than quality, but Change of Habit showcased his potential as an actor. Despite limitations, Elvis displayed charm and screen presence in his final film, relying on his own charisma to carry the movie. Elvis missed out on a potentially game-changing role in A Star Is Born, a missed opportunity that haunted him until his death.

Elvis Presley starred in 31 feature films of increasingly negligible quality between 1956 and 1969, beginning with the 1956 musical Western film Love Me Tender and ending with the 1969 crime drama musical film Change of Habit. Besides containing Presley's final feature film performance, Change of Habit is the only film in which Presley plays a professional character, in this case, a doctor. At the end of 1968, Presley, who was 34 when the filming of Change of Habit began in the spring of 1969, was at a crossroads in his career.

‘Reinas’ Review: An Understated Portrait of a Peruvian Family Navigating Political Turmoil
Image
Klaudia Reynicke’s compact feature Reinas deals in intimate moments with an understated charm.

The film, which premiered in the World Cinema Dramatic competition at Sundance, takes place in Lima during a tumultuous summer in 1992 and chronicles an unsteady reunion between a father and his two daughters. It’s a quiet study of paternal redemption, much like In the Summers, another one of this year’s festival offerings. Here, as in Alessandra Lacorazza’s debut, the complexities of a seemingly simple relationship reveal themselves over the course of slow summer days. Reynicke (Love Me Tender, Il Nido) shapes a moving character study of a family trying to ground itself against the backdrop of a shaky political landscape.

An excerpted television news report from the ’90s functions as a prologue, detailing a country in crisis. Peru’s minister of the economy announces that in the next 24 hours, the price of milk...

The 8 Best Elvis Presley Movies, Ranked
Image
The moment Elvis Presley stepped in front of the camera for his second appearance on "The Milton Berle Show" in 1956, there was no doubt that this young man was destined for more than pop music superstardom. Much more.

Conversationally, he was downright adorable with his boyish good looks and aw-shucks Southern shyness, but once the music kicked in he was transformed into a hunk of burning lust. That gyrating pelvis and run-riot voice spurred sexual awakenings in living rooms across the country (in full view of outraged parents). To teenagers, Elvis belted out a call to rebellion. To parents, he was a pompadoured incubus. To Hollywood, he was singing, swaggering box-office gold.

Between 1956 and 1972, Elvis starred in 31 features and two concert films. There were lulls (particularly when his popularity faded prior to his 1968 comeback special), but for the most part Elvis reliably packed 'em in. According to producer Hal B. Wallis...

Klaudia Reynicke’s Sundance Entry ‘Reinas’ Explores Family Ties
Image
While not quite autobiographical, Klaudia Reynicke’s third feature, “Reinas,” which world premieres at Sundance’s World Cinema Dramatic Competition, taps her own childhood memories of leaving her home in Peru for another country.

The Swiss-Peru-Spain co-production is set in the summer of 1992 when social and political unrest is roiling Lima, prompting Elena (played by Jimena Lindo), a mother of two young girls, to accept a job offer in the U.S. However, she needs the consent of her estranged husband (Gonzalo Molina) to take their daughters abroad. The girls, who barely know their father, are reluctant and wary at first but warm up to him, complicating matters further as conflicting emotions jeopardize their plans.

“It’s not exactly my story but the feelings are,” said Reynicke, who left for Switzerland with her mother at the age of 10 and had to adjust from living in a crowded family-packed house to...

See Pj Harvey Sing Dorset Dialect Songs in Front of NPR’s Tiny Desk
Image
Pj Harvey recently treated the NPR office to four songs from this year’s I Inside the Old Year Dying, an album that found her singing in the archaic dialect of Dorset, where she grew up, as well as an occasional nod to Elvis Presley’s “Love Me Tender.” She sang in a cluttered corner of the radio network’s office for the 16-minute Tiny Desk Concert, supported by multi-instrumentalist James Johnston and her longtime collaborator John Parish, both of whom backed her up on lyrics like “chalky children of...

Priscilla's 8 Biggest Changes To Priscilla Presley's Book
Image
Warning: This post contains major spoilers for Priscilla

Priscilla Presley's affairs before divorcing Elvis were left out of the biopic, but they played a role in her decision to leave him. Priscilla briefly lived with Elvis' father and stepmother before moving into Graceland, contrary to what the film portrays. Elvis proposed to Priscilla under pressure from his manager, but he had hesitations and even considered hiring a hitman to kill Priscilla's lover.

With so many movies made about Elvis Presley, writer-director Sofia Coppola went in another direction with Priscilla; and though it’s based on Priscilla Presley’s memoir Elvis and Me, the biopic doesn’t include every detail from the book. Priscilla is focused on the subject’s years with Elvis, better known as the King of Rock and Roll. Coppola brings Priscilla’s life to the big screen and includes much of what the actress included in her memoir — but not everything.

Cailee Spaeny and Priscilla Presley got a 'spooky' sign from Elvis Presley
Cailee Spaeny and Priscilla Presley received a "spooky" sign from Elvis Presley when they were discussing the 'Priscilla' biopic. The 25-year-old actress portrays the 'Naked Gun' star in Sofia Coppola's new movie and she's recalled how the 78 year old was stunned to hear her late ex-husband's song on the radio when they were chatting about the project because it happens so rarely.Cailee told The Hollywood Reporter: "When I was on the phone with Priscilla one time, we were speaking, and then Elvis came on her radio in the background... She [gasped], 'Do you hear that?' And I said, 'What?' And she said, 'He’s on the radio.' "And then she put the phone up to the speaker, and I think it might’ve been 'Love Me Tender' or something like that. It was one of his slower songs. "And then I said,...

Can A24's Priscilla Capture Some Of That Elvis Magic At The Box Office?
Image
Next weekend will seemingly be one of the more quiet weekends at the box office of the fall season. While several new releases are indeed hitting theaters, it's sort of a calm before the storm before "The Marvels" arrives. But if there is one movie that seems like it could have a possible breakout run (relatively speaking), it's A24's "Priscilla." Directed by Sofia Coppola, the film will focus on the life of Priscilla Presley, the wife of Elvis Presley, one of the most beloved musicians of all time. Will that connection to the king of rock 'n roll translate to ticket sales? That's the big question.

Official box office tracking has not been revealed for the film, and it often isn't a thing at all for smaller movies. That said, the folks at Box Office Pro have "Priscilla" taking in anywhere between $3 and $8 million on opening weekend. Complicating matters...

U2 Kick Off “U2:uv Achtung Baby” Residency at Msg Sphere: Setlist + Photo Gallery
Image
U2 kicked off their “U2:uv Achtung Baby” residency at Las Vegas’ Msg Sphere on Friday night. The sphere, which cost $2.3 billion to construct, features a wraparound interior LED screen, 170,000 ultra-directional speakers that utilize beamforming technology to deliver targeted audio to every seat in the venue, and a haptic flooring system, among many other high-tech features.

Bono and co. made full use of these features as they ran through a 22-song set that included material from their 1991 studio album, Achtung Baby, as well as their new song “Atomic City” and classics like “Vertigo,” “Where the Streets Have No Name,” With or Without You,” and “Beautiful Day.”

Oftentimes, the 35-story building’s floor-to-ceiling screens would project Es Devlin and Brian Eno-inspired artwork, while fans were treated to a crystal clear street view of Sin City during their new Vegas-inspired song. At one point, moving visuals came down from the ceiling to suspend over the audience,...
