Edward G. Robinson and Jayne Mansfield in Le témoin à abattre (1955)

Quotes

Le témoin à abattre

Edit
  • Victor Scott: [answering the phone] Mr. Scott's office.
  • [pause]
  • Victor Scott: No, this is not the Safeway Cleaners and Dryers!
  • [hanging up]
  • Victor Scott: Some idiot wants his pants pressed.
  • Miss Hinkel: Maybe we oughta get a new number.
  • Victor Scott: No, not so fast. We may be pressing pants yet!
  • Allen Parker: Then it's all settled? They won't prosecute me?
  • Victor Scott: No.
  • Allen Parker: You're not going to keep all of my $10,000?
  • Victor Scott: Your $10,000? You stole it; I earned it!
  • Allen Parker: But that's all I got. You wouldn't take everything I have, would you?
  • Victor Scott: You can get out of town and keep going before you lose more than money.
  • Victor Scott: Well, every time you go into a courtroom, it's a gamble.
  • Frank Garland: I'm the house, Victor. I never gamble!
  • Victor Scott: As for me, I'd rather see a hundred guilty men go free than convict another innocent man.
  • Ellen Miles: I thought you said you were a fighter.
  • Victor Scott: I am. But, I am not a killer.
  • Joseph Carter: I'm through with mouthpieces. They take the fees, and I take the rap! Ahh!
  • Victor Scott: Go on, take the rap. I forgot that free advice was never worth the money.
  • Frank Garland: Get up that $10,000, or you won't be chasing ambulances anymore. They'll be chasing you!
  • Frank Garland: I want you to know, Victor, that you'll be very well paid for this case, whichever way it turns out.
  • Victor Scott: [drunkenly] Told you to make it a double!
  • Bartender: I did, Mr. Scott.
  • Victor Scott: The real credit belongs to my assistant, Miss Miles. She really prepared the case.
  • Reporter: How about a story from you, Miss Miles?
  • Ellen Miles: Well, you can quote me as saying, "All I did was hold his coat."
  • Victor Scott: I've been too busy to be human. And I'm not going to start kissing babies - or anybody else.
  • Ellen Miles: That was dirty! Ray's hungry as a bear.
  • Victor Scott: No he isn't. He just wants to be with you. Unfortunately, to him, so do I.
  • Ellen Miles: You say the nicest things, but never in writing.
  • Victor Scott: That's my legal trade.
  • Ellen Miles: Bachelor trade, you mean.
  • Ellen Miles: Still accusing me of hero worship, eh?
  • Ray Borden: When you and I are together, I always feel like - Victor Scott's the ghost of the feast.
  • Victor Scott: What have you done?
  • Allen Parker: I've - taken $90,000.
  • Victor Scott: You're an embezzler.
  • Allen Parker: I didn't mean to steal it. I only borrowed it. I was going to put it right back.
  • Victor Scott: Well, what have done with it? Play the market?
  • Allen Parker: Me, play the market? Certainly not. It was the horses.
  • Victor Scott: All of it?
  • Allen Parker: There was - a woman.
  • Victor Scott: Yes, naturally.
  • Victor Scott: With embezzlers it's always women and racetracks. Occupational disease.
  • Ralph Ford: Mr. Scott seems to forget very quickly that he once sat at this desk.
  • Victor Scott: Oh, you're wrong. I'll never forget it. However, if you want to lock horns with me, maybe you wish I could. Every time you sit there and have a thought, just remember, I sat there and had it before you.
  • Frank Garland: Go to Ben Risen at Club Continental. Tell him you're hired. Leave your private telephone number with my secretary.
  • Angel O'Hara: Why, thank you, Mr. Garland.
  • [brushes up close to Mr. Garland]
  • Frank Garland: Later.
  • [Angel departs]
  • Victor Scott: Go right on, honey.
  • Angel O'Hara: The name is Angel O'Hara.
  • Victor Scott: You know why I could never indict you? Because nobody would talk. Why wouldn't they? Because you own them body and soul. Well, you're not going to own me. Nobody is.
  • Victor Scott: Do you want some other lawyer poking into this thing? Turning up all the evidence he can find, no matter whom it hurts? I know how to keep on safe ground. I'm not just defending Ellen Borden, I'm defending *you*.
  • Frank Garland: I want you to know, Victor, that you'll be paid very well for this case. Which ever way it turns out.
  • Victor Scott: It's about time you began thinking about getting married.
  • Ellen Miles: Yes, Mr. Cupid.
  • Victor Scott: [on the phone] Listen carefully, emergency. Put me through to the death house at the state prison. Fast!
  • Victor Scott: You're looking at Victor Scott, private citizen, from here on out. I'm going to set myself up a nice little civil practice. Get rich shuffling big corporation contracts from one draw to another. I'm going to have money in my hands. Not people's lives.
  • Edward Clary: I didn't kill her. I loved her.
  • Victor Scott: Goodbye, Mr. Scott. You *stink*, Mr. Scott. Hello.
  • Victor Scott: You shouldn't have come. A big mistake.
  • Ellen Miles: There's some hot coffee coming. And then you're going to have to get out of these wet clothes.
  • Victor Scott: Women are so practical. I always say that women are practical. Now, Ellen, you be practical.
  • Ellen Miles: Please, Vic. You need some sleep.
  • Victor Scott: What I need is - another bottle of scotch.
  • Ellen Miles: Do you really want me to?
  • Ellen Miles: Don't rush me, Ray. Please.
  • Victor Scott: Now, go on, do it.
  • Victor Scott: I don't want coffee. I don't want practical women. I just want a drink.
  • Ray Borden: I can see the old ghost rising up again, bigger and clammier than ever.
  • Miss Hinkel: This looks good. He's shaking all over. You could hear his teeth rattling.
  • Victor Scott: Don't mind the teeth, can you hear any money rattling? Loose change, anything?
  • Victor Scott: Business is booming. Two pickpockets, one peeping Tom, and one grand theft auto.
  • Victor Scott: Hinkel, I'm always wrong about you. I thought I'd be glad to have you back.
  • Angel O'Hara: Mr. Garland, darling, sweetie.
  • Frank Garland: Will you please shut up! Can't you see I'm talking long distance?
  • Ray Borden: Prove to me you can keep that pretty little mouth shut.
  • Ray Borden: [on the phone] Listen, you dumb broad, tell him it's Ray Borden and it's very important!
  • Frank Garland: You're like me. You gotta be on top.
  • Victor Scott: If the lid blows off, don't blame me.
  • Frank Garland: I don't blame people, I bury them.
  • Ray Borden: Too bad we didn't get married years ago before you got DA written all over you.
  • Ralph Ford: A *classic* picture: defenseless womanhood with nothing but a 38 caliber revolver in her hand.
  • Victor Scott: If you get trigger happy, remember, all my files relating to you will be on their way to the DA.
  • Victor Scott: How can a lawyer help anyone who won't tell him the truth?
