Film Analysis: At This Late Date, the Charleston (1981) by Kihachi Okamoto
Image
Produced through Art Theatre Guild, “At This Late Date, the Charleston” represents one of the most daring and personal works in the late career of director Kihachi Okamoto, a war survivor himself. Best known internationally for his biting samurai films like “Kill!” and “Sword of Doom”, Okamoto’s oeuvre is in fact as irreverent as it is diverse. His partnership with Atg allowed him the freedom to experiment both formally and thematically, as already demonstrated in “The Human Bullet” (1968) and “Battle Cry” (1975). With “Charleston”, he leapt fully into absurdist satire, crafting a tragicomic allegory of postwar Japan wrapped in the skin of a zany farce, in a style that definitely draws from Seijun Suzuki’s similar films. Though not widely screened abroad, the film was met with critical acclaim domestically and is now recognized by cinephiles as a hidden gem of 1980s Japanese cinema.

‘Anora’ Director Sean Baker Delivers ‘Battle Cry’ to Save the Movie-Going Experience
Image
“Anora’s” Sean Baker urged the Hollywood community to invest in theatrical releases and support movie theaters, especially those that are independently run, during a passionate speech following his Best Director Oscar win at the 97th annual Academy Awards on Sunday.

Baker opened his acceptance speech by thanking Quentin Tarantino, who presented him with the Best Director statuette, for casting Mikey Madison in “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” He credited her role in that film to her casting in “Anora,” which was made for $6 million.

Baker, who has exclusively made indie films throughout his career, called on the industry to put support behind the communal experience of going to the theaters.

“We’re all here tonight and watching this broadcast because we love movies. Where did we fall in love with the movies? At the movie theater watching a film,” he said. “Watching a film in a theater with an audience is an experience.

10 Worst Dragon Ball Fights With No Real Martial Arts
Image
Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ballis a shonen anime about far more than fights, but it’s easy for these action-packed spectacles to take over the narrative and end up the only thing fans talks about. Dragon Ball fights are well known for intense Ki attacks, flight, and apocalyptic powers, but the series' battles are rooted in martial arts above all else.

It’s one thing to be powerful enough to fire off deadly ki attacks, but characters need the right skills to put these powers to good use. Dragon Ball’s battles often find the right balance between over-the-top action and grounded martial arts, but the series has a bad habit of emphasizing comedy and shock value instead of the quality action Dragon Ball is known for every now & then.

Samurai Champloo's Classic Anime Soundtrack Gets Global Streams
Image
Now turning 20 years old, the Samurai Champloo anime is being celebrated in the funkiest, grooviest way possible.

In honor of the classic anime's 20th anniversary, the soundtrack for Samurai Champloo is being made widely available through several means. This includes global outlets such as Spotify, with the series' music set to be easier to stream than ever. Given that previous releases were on esoteric or now outdated media, this is vitally important for fans. Blending traditional Japanese music with the sounds of hip-hop, the show's score is considered to be one of the best in the history of anime.

Film Review: Battle Cry (1974) by Kihachi Okamoto
Image
“Battle Cry” is a very interesting film for Kihachi Okamoto. Considering that his most famous works in the beginning of the 60s, “Samurai Assassin” and “The Sword of Doom”, even though were critical of Bushido, were also chanbara epics, the fact that later in his career, he decided to mock the exact concept, comes as a surprise, particularly because he seems to mock his filmic past. Atg was the place to do so at the time, and after “The Human Bullet” which satirized WW2, Okamoto came up with “Battle Cry”, which does the same thing with the military phase of the Meiji Restoration of 1868.

L.Q. Jones, a veteran character actor whose career spanned seven decades, died Saturday of natural causes at his home in the Hollywood Hills. He was 94 years old.

Jones’ death was confirmed by his grandson, Erté deGarces. DeGarces shared that Jones died surrounded by his family.

Actor Laurence Fishburne Documentary About Jason Wilson ‘The Cave Of Adullam’ To Have World Premiere At Tribeca; Directed By Laura Checkoway
Image
Feature documentary, The Cave of Adullam, is set to world premiere at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival on Monday, June 13. Directed by Academy Award and Emmy nominated filmmaker Laura Checkoway, the film is produced by Laurence Fishburne and Helen Sugland of Cinema Gypsy Productions, Banca Studio’s Roy Bank, and Wavelength’s Founder & CEO Jenifer Westphal and President Joe Plummer.

The Cave Adullam follows author Jason Wilson and depicts a rarely seen and raw approach of initiating young Black boys into adulthood at his martial arts dojo in inner-city Detroit, aptly called The Cave of Adullam.

While using the mantra “it’s easier to raise boys than repair broken men”, Jason’s methodology teaches emotional stability instead of discipline, setting vulnerable children on a new path to become whole adults. As the film follows four young recruits, all at various crossroads in their lives, Jason guides them into confronting their inner struggles – overcoming issues with anger,...

Review: "Battle Cry" (1955) Starring James Whitmore And Van Heflin; Warner Archive Blu-ray Release

An all star cast features in the adaptation of Leon Uris’ “Battle Cry,” available on Blu-ray via the Warner Archive Collection. The granddaddy of contemporary WWII melodramas like “The Winds of War” and “Band of Brothers,” “Battle Cry” was one of the first big dramatic war stories which followed multiple characters through boot camp, romance, heartbreak, the battlefield, death and homecoming. One of my favorite movies in this genre is Otto Preminger’s “In Harms Way” from 1965 which teamed John Wayne and Kirk Douglas. “Battle Cry” was first a best selling novel released in 1953 and quickly adapted to the big screen. Some people criticize these types of military themed melodramas as being light on action and heavy on romance, but there’s certainly a place for both.

“Battle Cry” begins with the narrator setting the stage. It’s...

Cinema Retro Exclusive: Interview With L.Q. Jones
By Andrew J. Rausch

Lq Jones is a legend. He’s been in some of the greatest American films ever made, and his extensive filmography (consisting of well over 100 films) features a virtual Who’s Who of American American cinema. He made his film debut in the 1955 Raoul Walsh war picture Battle Cry, credited with his birth name Justus E. McQueen. The character he played was a young private named...Lq Jones. Soon, at the behest of the studio, the young actor changed his name to that of the character, and the rest is history.

Lq Jones isn’t a household name, and that’s a shame, because it deserves to be. Among knowledgeable cineastes he’s seen as a god among men, a gifted and accomplished performer. He’s one of those character actors people instantly recognize, as he’s been in films with the likes of Elvis Presley,...

Tab Hunter (1931-2018)
by Nathaniel R

Tab at the beach in the early '50sApologies that we didn't say our goodbyes to one of Hollywood's best hunks, Tab Hunter, in a timelier fashion.

Tab's real name was Arthur Kelm but back in the studio days almost everyone got a catchier name to boost their celebrity appeal... and you can't really beat Tab Hunter for a memorable name, can you? (Sometimes we wonder why actors don't do that now. Benedict Cumberbatch as a stage name and so many actors use their real names even if their real name is  long and hyphenated and hard to imagine on a marquee!).

Though born in New York his sun-kissed blonde beauty was a perfect fit for sunny California and Hollywood and he rose through the ranks quickly in films. Despite a few well regarded performances peppered throughout his career he was never considered a particularly strong actor...

Tab Hunter: how Hollywood's boy next door became a gay icon
The actor, who died on Sunday at the age of 86, kept his sexuality a secret at a time when the industry wasn’t ready for an openly gay heartthrob

Hollywood heartthrob Tab Hunter, the beloved boy-next-door of 1950s Warner Brothers classics like Battle Cry, The Burning Hills and Damn Yankees, died on Sunday at the age of 86. A blonde, square-jawed and wholesome symbol of mid-century American masculinity, Hunter, born in 1931 as Arthur Gelien, was gay but kept his sexuality a secret for the bulk of his career, until coming out in his 2005 autobiography Tab Hunter Confidential: The Making of a Movie Star.

Tab Hunter Appreciation: A Star Who Survived Both the Studio System and Hollywood Homophobia
Tab Hunter
“To ask ‘Whatever happened to Tab Hunter?'” a reporter for The New York Times once wrote, “is to ask ‘Whatever happened to America?'”

As we remember Hunter — the Hollywood heartthrob who died this week a few days shy of his 87th birthday — it’s clear that his own career and personal path follows America’s (and Hollywood’s) arc of understanding homosexuality in the post-wwii era. A performer who was once deeply closeted in the industry could, in his later years, make two outrageous comedies in which his romantic co-lead was played by legendary drag queen Divine.

Born Arthur Gelien, Tab Hunter was one of a stable of performers groomed for stardom by agent Henry Willson, who gave the neophyte performer his name and his first forays onto the big screen.

Hunter made his big-screen debut in 1950 and would become one of the decade’s biggest stars, both...

Tab Hunter’s Trials and Tribulations: 7 Things We Learned From the Late Gay Heartthrob’s Netflix Documentary
Tab Hunter
With his blonde hair and all-American good looks, Tab Hunter was the picture of a 1950s heartthrob. At the height of his career, he made waves as a wholesome boy next door in films like “Battle Cry” (1955), “The Burning Hills” (1956) with Natalie Wood, and “Damn Yankees” (1958). He enjoyed a short career resurgence in the ’80s, after playing Divine’s love interest in John Waters’ “Polyester” (1981). On Monday, July 9, a Facebook post announced that Hunter had died. He was 86.

Hunter wrote candidly about his life as a closeted man in Hollywood in a 2005 memoir “Tab Hunter Confidential: The Making of a Movie Star,” including his relationships with Olympic figure skater Ronnie Roberston and “Psycho” star Anthony Perkins. Their romance is the subject of a film from J.J. Abrams and Zachary Quinto in the early stages of development at Paramount, tentatively titled “Tab & Tony.” Hunter’s memoir was adapted into a documentary in 2015, directed by Jeffrey Schwarz.

Tab Hunter Dead At 86
By Lee Pfeiffer

Actor Tab Hunter has died at age 86 after sudden complications from a blood clot lead to a fatal heart attack. Hunter's blonde hair and hunky build made him a natural for the kind of beefcake leading men that characterized 1950s Hollywood. He was put under contract at Warner Brothers and became the studio's top grossing star during the years 1955-1959. Among Hunter's biggest hits of the era was the WWII film Battle Cry and the screen adaptation of the Broadway musical Damn Yankees. Hunter's popularity briefly extended to singing and his recording of "Young Love" was a smash hit, displacing Elvis Presley at the top of the charts. However, changing attitudes among fickle movie-goers in the 1960s swerved away from the traditional studio concept of a leading man. Hunter continued to work but in less-than-stellar productions. He did, however, have memorable cameos in big studio productions such...

Tab Hunter Dies: ‘Damn Yankees’ Hollywood Heartthrob Was 86
Tab Hunter
Tab Hunter, the 1950s epitome of the blond Hollywood heartthrob and teen icon pin-up, whose career included early A-list fare like Damn Yankees! and Battle Cry to later (much later) cult classics Polyester, Lust in the Dust, Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman and authorship of a memoir in part describing his life as a closeted gay movie star, has died. He was 86.

Hunter came out as gay with his 2005 autobiography Tab Hunter Confidential: The Making of a Movie Star – later the basis for Jeffrey Schwarz’ 2015 Netflix documentary Tab Hunter Confidential – clearing up longstanding Hollywood rumors that. Since his ’80s resurgence in the John Waters and Paul Bartel films costarring Divine, Hunter had relaxed into a more self-amused, even self-deprecating attitude about the vast chasm between the man born Arthur Gelien in 1931 and the teen idol manufactured and rechristened Tab Hunter by Henry Willson, the agent behind such creatively named Hollywood hunks as Rock Hudson,...

Tab Hunter, ‘Damn Yankees’ Star and Gay Icon, Dies at 86
Tab Hunter
Tab Hunter, a former on-screen heartthrob and gay icon, has died. He was 86.

Hunter died Sunday night in Santa Barbara after a blood clot in his leg caused cardiac arrest, Allan Glaser, Hunter’s partner for more than three decades, confirmed to Variety.

With his All-American good looks, wavy blonde hair, piercing blue eyes, and toothy smile, Hunter rose to the top ranks of Hollywood leading men in the 1950’s and early ’60’s. He appeared in the likes of “Damn Yankees” and “Battle Cry,” and had chart-topping records such as “Young Love.” But at the height of his popularity, he was dogged by rumors that he was gay, a potentially career-ending rumor during that culturally conservative era. At one point, he was “outed” by the gossip rag, Confidential.

Hunter fell out of favor as the 1960s continued and a new breed of stars such as Dustin Hoffman and Al Pacino,...

Dorothy Malone Dead at 93
Actress Dorothy Malone, who starred in the primetime soap opera Peyton Place, died Friday in her hometown of Dallas. She was age 93.

Malone died in an assisted living center from natural causes days before her 94th birthday, said her daughter, Mimi Vanderstraaten.

After 11 years of mostly roles as loving sweethearts and wives, the brunette actress decided she needed to gamble on her career instead of playing it safe. She fired her agent, hired a publicist, dyed her hair blonde and sought a new image.

"I came up with a conviction that most of the winners in this business became stars overnight by playing shady dames with sex appeal," she recalled in 1967. She welcomed the offer for Written on the Wind, in which she played an alcoholic nymphomaniac who tries to steal Rock Hudson from his wife, Lauren Bacall.

"And I've been unfaithful or drunk or oversexed almost ever since— on the screen,...

The 2013 winner, you might remember, was “Let It Go,” the anthem from “Frozen” that became a hit around the world and spawned a zillion amateur YouTube renditions.

Tech Support: 79 tunes compete for Oscar's Best Original Song race
Anne Hathaway, Jamie Foxx, Kristin Chenoweth, Jesse Eisenberg, George Lopez, Jemaine Clement, Will.i.am, Pierce Gagnon, Rachel Crow, and Amandla Stenberg in Rio 2 (2014)
This year's Best Original Song Oscar race hasn't really achieved much lift-off. Of course, the contenders have been obvious. "Lost Stars" from "Begin Again" may well be the best of them, though "Everything is Awesome" from "The Lego Movie" certainly has its punch-drunk fans. Elsewhere, though, there are a few popular artists in the mix. John Legend and Common put together a hell of a track for "Selma" called "Glory." Lana Del Rey is back in the mix with the title track from "Big Eyes." Coldplay even wants to, uh, play, with "Miracles" from "Unbroken." The Academy announced the list of 79 eligible contenders Friday afternoon, and many of them you've seen outlined clearly in our dedicated Contenders section for the category all season. Let's take a closer look… Animated players "The Book of Life" and "The Boxtrolls" each have a pair of ditties and "Big Hero 6" has one as well.
