Busby Berkeley
Ranking the 20 Best Movie Musicals of All Time, From ‘Singin’ in the Rain’ to ‘Lemonade’
Busby Berkeley
The musical often feels like a relic of a long-dead Hollywood studio system, but it remains a genre that captures movies’ ability to create story worlds that move freely between reality and fantasy. The worst examples come from filmmakers who give license to music, color, and movement run amok; the best musicals transcend artifice and integrate songs that become expressions of pure character emotion. It offers endless possibilities, but success demands a complete mastery of the medium.

Very few current stars could learn the choreography of Busby Berkeley, Jerome Robbins, or Bob Fosse, and adapting a medium developed and most suited for the stage requires innovative direction. In translating the joy of a live musical to the magic of cinema, some things are easily lost in the shuffle.

Anthony Ramos Makes a Name for Himself With 'She's Gotta Have It' (Exclusive)
“Everyone in the room knew immediately: This is special.”

Hamilton star Anthony Ramos is talking about that room where it happened. From workshop presentations at The Public to sold-out crowds at Broadway’s Richard Rodgers Theater, Ramos was part of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical phenomenon from the beginning in 2014, playing John Laurens and Alexander Hamilton’s son Philip for over two years. “We knew we were about to be a part of something that was going to change all of our lives,” Ramos tells Et.

Now, like other stars from the original cast, Ramos is seeing his life change dramatically as his career reaches new heights. This year, the 26-year-old actor and musician landed his first starring role on TV, working with filmmaker Spike Lee, no less, playing Mars Blackmon on the Netflix TV adaptation of She’s Gotta Have It, based on Lee’s debut 1988 film about a polyamorous woman artist living in Brooklyn. Lee originated the role...

Apple Seeking New Headquarters For Video Team At Historic Hollywood Studio (Report)
Apple is reportedly seeking to lease a new headquarters for its original video team: The Culver Studios, which is where iconic films like Gone With The Wind, A Star Is Born, and The Matrix were shot.

The studio comprises 13 soundstages that measure up to 32,000 square feet apiece, reports The Financial Times, and are suitable for both feature film and television shoots. Beyond the cache of the name, the space would primarily serve as an office space for Apple’s video team, led by former Sony Pictures TV execs Jamie Erlicht and Zack Van Amburg. Erlicht and Van Amburg are behind hits like Breaking Bad and The Crown, and were tapped to helm Apple's original content efforts in June.

Great Job, Internet!: Read This: In Hollywood today, followers are as important as acting classes
In Hollywood’s Golden Age, the proverbial trip to stardom was immortalized in movies like A Star Is Born: a chance meeting with a talent agent at a notions counter, an appearance as an unscheduled understudy, a standout player in a movie’s bit part. But today’s new crop of famous people come from a wide variety of different outlets far beyond the classic studio system. As GQ’s Zach Baron reports, outlets like streaming services, YouTube channels, and social media avenues are now as important to future stars as a turn at the Strasberg Institute once might have been. Baron interviews a variety of young starlets, like Disney Channel stars Paris Berelc and the recently ousted Jake Paul, as well as TV’s Kid Flash, Keiynan Lonsdale, Glee’s Harry Shum Jr., and Dear White People’s Antoinette Robertson. They all offer insight on how radically the...

Lady Gaga and boyfriend Christian Carino were spotted out together in the Hamptons on Wednesday, enjoying the first day of summer with smiles on their faces.

The couple looked casual and comfortable together as they walked along some rocks, with Carino – a CAA talent agent – throwing his arm over the singer’s shoulders at one point.

Both were wearing backwards white baseball caps, and Gaga paired her denim shorts with a Little Mermaid t-shirt.

People confirmed Gaga and Carino’s romance in February, just ahead of the 31-year-old’s Super Bowl halftime performance.

Dave Chappelle Joins Lady Gaga in Bradley Cooper's A Star Is Born
Bradley Cooper
Last month, Warner Bros. released the first photo of Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga in the studio's remake of A Star Is Born, just as production got under way. Today we have word that the cast is starting to come together while production continues, with comedian Dave Chappelle joining the team. This marks the actor's first movie role since appearing in director Spike Lee's Chi-Raq in 2015.

The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Dave Chappelle will play a character named Noodles, the best friend of country star Jackson Maine (Bradley Cooper), whom he met while they were both playing in blues clubs. The story follows Jackson Maine, whose career is in decline, when he meets a young singer named Ally (Lady Gaga), whom he strikes up a love affair with. Hamilton Alum Anthony Ramos Secures Roles In A Star Is Born And Godzilla: King Of The Monsters
It’s a big, big day for Anthony Ramos.

The up-and-coming star, who wowed in the dual roles of John Laurens and Philip Hamilton in Broadway hit Hamilton, has today climbed aboard both Godzilla: King of the Monsters and A Star is Born, Bradley Cooper’s music drama headed up by a true star and all-around industry icon in Lady Gaga (Stefani Germanotta). It’s a remake of William Wellman’s 1937 film of the same name, and we understand Eric Roth is the brains behind the screenplay. As for Ramos, he’s landed the part of Gaga’s best friend Ramon, an “aspiring dancer who is born to be in the spotlight.” Filming is underway now ahead of a theatrical release on September 28th of this year.

That’s the indie passion project; as for the blockbuster, Deadline’s scoop reveals that Ramos has boarded King of the Monsters to play Cpl.

Famous In Love Season 1 Episode 2 Review: A Star Is Torn
Paige's jerk dad and her fangirl mom came to town on Famous In Love Season 1 Episode 2, and things were (briefly) not looking so good for her fledgling acting career.

For all of the drama surrounding her dad's disapproval over her choice to pursue acting, it was rather weirdly wrapped up in a neat little bow in the final two minutes of screentime. What an odd quick-fix that was.

"A Star Is Torn" centered on Paige's anxieties about her newfound fame. As she told Cassie and Jake in the stylist scene, she can hardly enjoy all of the amazing things happening to her because of her worries over balancing school and dealing with her dad.

Oh, how sad. Woe is Paige. (Note: This is sarcasm. Everything she complained about is basically the definition of first-world problems.)

Paige even whipped up a spreadsheet in an attempt to prove to her dad that...

‘A Star is Born’ at Coachella
Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper filmed scenes for the ‘A Star is Born’ remake at Coachella.

Shake out those flower crowns, jean shorts, and neon accessories: we’re talking about Coachella again. I know, I know you’re probably over hearing about the three days millennial Woodstock. However, something interesting happened last weekend. It’s not Hans Zimmer playing a psychedelic set though that was pretty impressive.

Lady Gaga (née Stefani Germanotta) headlined Coachella’s Saturday night program — following Beyoncé’s decision to hold off headlining until next year due to her pregnancy. Gaga performed a surprise new song titled The Cure. Gaga then managed to film a part of Bradley Cooper’s remake of A Star is Born. If that title sounds familiar, it’s because you’ve probably heard it three times. The Janet Gaynor-starring 1937 version, the Judy Garland-starring 1954 version, and the Barbra Streisand-starring 1976 version. In...

Filming began on Monday (April 17) on Warner Bros. Pictures’ reimagining of the musical A Star Is Born starring Bradley Cooper and introducing Stefani Germanotta, known across the globe as Oscar-nominated music superstar Lady Gaga, in her first leading role in a major motion picture.

Four-time Oscar nominee Bradley Cooper (“American Sniper,” “American Hustle,” “Silver Linings Playbook”) is helming the film, marking his directorial debut.

A Star Is Born is being filmed entirely in Southern California and Warner Bros. Pictures has it slated for release beginning September 28, 2018.

The film is from producer Jon Peters who produced the 1976 film starring Barbra Steisand and Kris Kristofferson. Nominated for 4 Academy Awards, the movie won one Oscar for Best Music, Original Song – Barbra Streisand (music), Paul Williams (lyrics) for the song “Evergreen (Love Theme from...

Lady Gaga Shares First Look at 'A Star Is Born'
We've been tracking the development of a new version of A Star Is Born for years. Beyonce was originally set to play a lead role under the direction of Clint Eastwood, with stars like Leonardo DiCaprio, Will Smith, Christian Bale and Tom Cruise touted for the other lead role. The project stalled when Beyonce dropped out in 2012. Everything changed when Bradley Cooper boarded the project in 2015 as both star and director. Beyonce considered joining again but ultimately decided against it, leaving the way open last year for Lady Gaga to take on a role made famous by Janet Gaynor, Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand. Production has now begun and Lady Gaga shared the first official photo via social media.   I am so excited to star in my first movie...

Thoughts I Had... Gaga & Cooper's "A Star is Born"
Chris here. Filming has officially begun on the long-developed remake of A Star is Born, which is both the cinematic debut of Lady Gaga and star Bradley Cooper's first time in the director's chair. Gaga may have some big shoes to fill after Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand, but this one promises its own unique point of view: a fully country-western soundtrack. Intriguingly, Cooper will be filming live at music festival Coachella over the next few days, so you can bet we'll get a look at some of Gaga's original songs - but the studio has also given us our first look at the duo. Some first thoughts...

A Star Is Born In First Image From Bradley Cooper’s Music Drama
Filming is officially underway on Bradley Cooper’s music drama A Star is Born – and the first photo is here to prove it.

Featuring Cooper, guitar in hand, opposite Lady Gaga (Stefani Germanotta), the image is a raw peek at Warner’s long-gestating picture, which is now well on its way to its September 2018 release. We say long-gestating because, at one point, Hollywood veteran Clint Eastwood was attached at the helm, right around the time when Beyoncé was linked with the title role of Ally, a talented unknown bound for stardom.

Fresh off her show-stopping performance at Coachella 2017, Gaga is arguably the perfect fit for the part, and A Star is Born marks the artist’s first leading role in a major motion picture. Other screen credits include Machete Kills, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For and a recurring role in American Horror Story. Bradley Cooper, incidentally, is also...

Bradley Cooper’s ‘A Star Is Born’ Remake Gets Its First Photo And Some New Plot Details
When people say that you shouldn’t remake the classics, what they really mean is that you shouldn’t remake the classics without a good idea. George Cukor‘s 1954 film “A Star Is Born” is undoubtedly in the inner circle of Hollywood greats, but that hasn’t stopped first-time director Bradley Cooper from planning an ambitious and — let’s admit it — intriguing big screen remake. We’ve known for a while now that Cooper would be transplanting the movie to the country music scene and bringing in actress and pop star Lady Gaga for the Judy Garland role, but Warner Bros.

The Diceman Cometh To Bradley Cooper’s A Star Is Born
Andrew Dice Clay – aka The Diceman – is in advanced talks to join Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper (here making his directorial debut) in A Star Is Born. Deadline reports that the notorious comedian will play Lady Gaga’s “very Italian” father in the remake of the 1937 classic.

This’ll be the fourth A Star Is Born to hit cinemas. William A. Wellman’s original was remade with Judy Garland and James Mason in 1954, then with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson in 1976. The plot examines the effects of celebrity, with an ingenue singer falling in love with an established star. Over the course of the movie, the woman’s fame rises as the man’s falls – resulting all manner of booze-soaked bickering.

It’s a prime role for Lady Gaga, following her award-winning dramatic performance in American Horror Story. She’s made a couple of big screen appearances over years, turning...

Having played a significant role in the delivery of three of the most high profile musical feature films in recent years – namely Dreamgirls, Chicago, and the upcoming Beauty And The Beast – writer-director Bill Condon is now preparing to bring the big screen to Broadway, by signing on with Warner Bros Theatre Ventures to develop a stage production of A Star Is Born.

Condon’s pedigree brings a great deal of weight to this news. The Academy Award winner wrote the screenplays for Dreamgirls and Chicago – both of which were highly successful screen adaptations of hit Broadway musicals. He directed Dreamgirls himself, and returns to the feature film musical genre this year with Disney’s live-action re-make of Beauty And The Beast. In between, he sharpened his skill-set on a number of dramatic projects – such as The Twilight Saga and The Fifth Estate – before making his Braodway directorial debut in 2014 with Side Show.

Film News: TCM Host & Film Historian Robert Osborne Dies at 84
New York City – Robert Osborne, one of the great film advocates and historians of our era, who hosted on Turner Classic Movies (TCM) with passionate skill from 1994 until recently, has passed away on March 6th, 2017, in New York City. The way that Mr. Osborne inspired film lovers everywhere was deep and influential. He was 84.

I was lucky enough to meet the man, naturally at a Chicago movie theater, back in 2005. Five years later, as I became a film reporter myself, I got to interview Ro via phone. He was the type of film man that you could spend a month with and never come to the end of his knowledge, and the way he shared it as the host on TCM was as if the finest uncle was giving us life lessons. Next to Roger Ebert, Robert Osborne is another reporter legend who galvanized my love for film.

King of the Classics: Robert Osborne,...

Lady Gaga at an event for The 67th Primetime Emmy Awards (2015)
Dave Chappelle has joined Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper in Warner Bros.' remake of A Star Is Born.

Cooper is not only starring opposite Lady Gaga, but is making his directorial debut with the film.

The movie is based on the 1937 film starring Janet Gaynor and Fredric March. The story centers on a movie star who helps an aspiring young actress find fame, even as age and alcoholism send his own career into a downward spiral. It was subsequently remade in 1954 by director George Cukor, with Judy Garland and James Mason starring, and again in 1976, with Barbra...

‘A Star Is Born’ & Untitled Paramount Tentpole Among 22 Films Receiving California Tax Credits
The California Film Commission today revealed that an Untitled Paramount Project, an Untitled Universal Project and the now-back-on A Star Is Born are among the 22 latest feature recipients of the Golden State's tax incentive program. The snagging of a tentpole like the Paramount project for the home of Hollywood is a major get for the program, which allowed films with budgets over $75 million to be eligible for tax credits when the program more than tripled in 2014. "The Reader Collaborates with the Author in Every Book": Some Words About Straub-Huillet
I'm drawn to Straub-Huillet’s usage of direct quotations rather than adapting or interpreting original material for a film. To me this is, among other things, a very straightforward and concrete way of highlighting that people are much less original than they are often assumed to be. (I think that Danièle Huillet once said this, but she was certainly not the first one.) It might be worth being reminded of this, especially today, in a time where we see and seek constant innovation and renewal everywhere while nothing really changes at the core. But for Straub-Huillet, quotation is also about something else. Every film of theirs is a documentation of their loving relationship to a preexisting text, artwork, or artist. The films are more genuinely about the work of the other and less about the couple's so-called vision. Quotation, to Straub-Huillet, is an act of respect, one...

Witness the Evolution of Cinematography with Compilation of Oscar Winners
This past weekend, the American Society of Cinematographers awarded Greig Fraser for his contribution to Lion as last year’s greatest accomplishment in the field. Of course, his achievement was just a small sampling of the fantastic work from directors of photography, but it did give us a stronger hint at what may be the winner on Oscar night. Ahead of the ceremony, we have a new video compilation that honors all the past winners in the category at the Academy Awards

Created by Burger Fiction, it spans the stunning silent landmark Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans all the way up to the end of Emmanuel Lubezki‘s three-peat win for The Revenant. Aside from the advancements in color and aspect ration, it’s a thrill to see some of cinema’s most iconic shots side-by-side. However, the best way to experience the evolution of the craft is by...

Oscars 2017: Why Mahershala Ali Will Beat Jeff Bridges for Supporting Actor
Trevante Rhodes, Ashton Sanders, and Alex R. Hibbert in Moonlight (2016)
As the Hollywood guilds lay out their winners, a clear frontrunner has emerged in the Supporting Actor category. We dig into the final five contenders, listed in order of likelihood to win the Oscar:

Mahershala Ali popped out at Telluride and Toronto from Barry Jenkins’ “Moonlight” (A24) ensemble in the beating-heart role of the Cuban-born drug-dealer who nurtures the young boy “Little.” Ali stood out in part because he was better-known than the film’s other actors, enjoying a breakout year as a swath of projects hit screens.

Dauntingly, he shot three of them at the same time. In New York, he was violent New York gangster Cottonmouth on Marvel’s Netflix series “Luke Cage.” In Baltimore, he continued the fourth (and, voluntarily, his last) season of his Emmy-nominated role as Remy Danton, the slick former communications director for Frank Underwood, in “House of Cards.” And in Miami, on three successive weekends,...

Her iconic character Dorothy set out to find happiness “Over the Rainbow” in The Wizard of Oz. But off-screen, Judy Garland‘s quest for peace was plagued by insecurity, depression and drug abuse.

Sadly, love couldn’t save Garland, who died in 1969 from a barbiturate overdose. She was 47.

Newswire: Judy Garland’s remains were recently moved, for a surprisingly sweet reason
Judy Garland died in 1969 at the age of 47 of a barbiturate overdose. Her funeral in New York City was swarmed by some 20,000 fans grieving the empathetic star; as her A Star Is Born co-star James Mason opined in his eulogy, “Judy’s great gift was that she could wring tears out of hearts of rock.”

Almost five decades later, Garland’s descendants recently had her remains shipped from New York to California. While that act is kind of unconventional, the New York Daily News reports that the reasoning behind it is rather sweet: Garland’s kids Liza Minnelli, Lorna Luft, and Joey Luft are now getting along in years, and Garland’s former resting place would not have enough burial space for all of them. So the family will all eventually be buried together in Los Angeles’ Hollywood Forever Cemetery, giving Garland followers a new place ...

Judy Garland’s Lover Sid Luft Reacted So Badly to Her Pregnancy She Didn’t Tell Him About Her Abortion
Judy Garland in La danseuse des Folies Ziegfeld (1941)
Judy Garland‘s tumultuous relationship with her lover — and eventual third husband — Sid Luft got off to a troubled start when she became pregnant with his child and secretly had an abortion.

Luft details the abortion in a new, posthumous memoir, Judy and I: My Life with Judy Garland, due out March 1 and excerpted in this week’s issue of People. The book is based on notes from his autobiography that was drafted and never published before his death in 2005.

The iconic star of The Wizard of Oz was still married to her second husband, Vincente Minnelli, when she began...

Best & Worst Of The 2017 Golden Globes
The 74th Golden Globes made history in more way than one. “La La Land” took seven Golden Globes, more than any film in the award show’s history. The previous record, five wins, was held by five different films, the last being “A Star is Born” in 1977. The show might be most remembered, however, for Meryl Streep’s incredible acceptance speech where she eloquently remarked on the best performance she’d seen over the past year: Donald Trump’s.

"La La Land" Makes Golden Globes History! See Complete Winners List!
Damien Chazelle's "La La Land" made history at the 74th Annual Golden Globes winning all 7 nominations including Best Picture Musical/Comedy! The film won Best Actor (Ryan Gosling), Actress (Emma Stone), Director, Screenplay, Score, and Song! Previously, "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" was the record-holder for winning 6/6 and both "Doctor Zhivago" and "A Star is Born" 5 for 5.

A big congrats to Chazelle and "La La Land!"

The biggest upset for me? Natalie Portman's "Jackie" performance was overshadowed by Isabelle Huppert in "Elle." I thought Portman, wigs and make-up included, embodied the role of our former First Lady!

In the TV category, "The Night Manager" was the big winner taking home three awards (mostly for performance for Tom Hiddleston, Olivia Colman, and Hugh Laurie), followed by "The People v O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story" and "The Crown" each with two.

Here's a few of my observations of...
