How Many Oscars Has Walt Disney Won? The Answer Will Surprise You!
Image
Walt Disney and the Oscars go together like popcorn and movies, except his Oscar collection is something no one else has ever matched. You might think big Hollywood stars or legendary directors hold the record for the most Academy Awards, but nope, it’s the man behind Mickey Mouse who still reigns supreme. And trust me, the number of Oscars he won will blow your mind!

Walt Disney in The Imagineering Story and Sean Baker accepting his Best Director Award at Oscars 2025 (Credits- Disney+ and Oscars/YouTube)

Walt Disney changed the game in animation and filmmaking. Back in 1923, when he founded The Walt Disney Company, no one could have guessed how massive it would become. From Mickey’s first appearance in Steamboat Willie to the groundbreaking Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Disney wasn’t just making cartoons, he was making history. His creativity, storytelling, and innovation set new standards,...

Sean Baker Ties 70-Year-Old Oscars Record Held by Walt Disney
Image
Anoradirector Sean Baker had a record-breaking evening at the 2025 Academy Awards, matched only by one of Hollywood's biggest names. Last night, Baker became the second person in history to receive four individual Oscars thanks to his provocative drama — the first being none other than Walt Disney.

Baker won four out of the five awards that Anora was nominated for: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Editing, and Best Original Screenplay. This stunning achievement makes him the second person ever to earn four Oscars in one night and the first person to do so in 70 years. In 1954, Walt Disney initially established this record by winning Best Documentary for The Living Desert, Best Documentary Short for The Alaskan Eskimo, Best Short Cartoon for Toot, Whistle, Plunk, and Boom, and Best Short Subject for Bear Country. Unlike Disney, however, Baker notably won all of his awards for a single film.

'Anora's' creator just tied an amazing Oscar record held by Walt Disney!
Image
The Oscars saw history last night with the tying of one of Walt Disney’s Oscar records but Walt still holds a big one in Academy history!

The Oscars are always notable for some fun records and achievements being made. The 2025 ceremony saw a few, such as Best Actor winner Adrian Brody, setting the record for the longest acceptance speech at five minutes and forty-five seconds.

In the Best Animated Feature category, Pixar's Inside Out 2 lost the award not to the favored The Wild Robot but the indie feature Flow in what many saw as the biggest upset of the night.

The ceremony was good, and host Conan O’Brien kept it going. However, Disney got some embarrassment as the live Hulu stream of the event was interrupted by the server crashing mid-way through. Worse, the live feed cut off at the scheduled time of 10:30 Est, right before the announcement of Best Actress.

Image
Guess who made history at the 97th Academy Awards despite controversies surrounding the lack of intimacy coordinators on set? If you guessed Sean Baker, you’re absolutely right. The indie filmmaker, known for his raw storytelling, witnessed the biggest night of his career—winning not one, not two, but four Oscars in a single evening!

His 2024 film Anora took home several awards, turning heads and breaking records. But the biggest moment came for Sean Baker, who matched the record only Walt Disney has ever achieved: a single person winning four Oscars in one night. If that’s not a groundbreaking success, then what is?

Sean Baker bagged Best Director, Screenplay and Editing awards

The indie genius behind Anora, Sean Baker, just turned the 97th Academy Awards into his Monopoly game, winning almost every award for different categories. Dominating the 2025 Oscars,...

‘Anora’s’ Sean Baker makes history as the first person to win 4 Oscars for a single film
Image
Move over, Walt Disney. Anora filmmaker Sean Baker made Oscar history on Sunday night, becoming the first person to win four Oscars in one night for the same project.

Baker won Best Picture (as a producer), Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Film Editing for the Neon film. He was favored to win all of them except editing, where Anora was second in the odds to Conclave, the BAFTA winner. Due to the L.A. wildfires in January, the Ace Eddie Awards were moved to March 14, so the only major editing precursors were the BAFTAs and the Critics Choice Awards, which crowned the Oscar-snubbed Challengers. Last month, Anora won the top guild prizes at the Producers Guild of America, Directors Guild of America, and Writers Guild of America Awards.

A Cinematic Legend Has The Most Oscars In History
Image
One might think, looking at the above headline, that this will be an article about the legendary composer John Williams, but that is not the case. Williams, perhaps shockingly, has only won five Oscars in his decades-long career, specifically for "Fiddler on the Roof," "Jaws," "Star Wars: Episode IV -- A New Hope," "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial," and "Schindler's List." The famed composer, however, has been nominated for more Oscars than anyone in history (save for one), having been recognized 54 times since 1968. Williams' most recent nomination was for "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny."

Others might also think of director John Ford or actor Katharine Hepburn as the most decorated talents in Oscars history, but they each only have four wins to their names. To be fair, winning four Oscars in one's field is still a huge achievement. Also, Ford holds the record as the most awarded director, and Hepburn the most awarded actor.

Disney's First 25 Movies Ever
Image
Disney's 100th-anniversary celebration highlights the creations of Walt Disney, including all the films and television shows that his company has developed since its inception. That said, the best-known Disney projects are the studio's vast canon of animated movies, which have been critically acclaimed and have won numerous Oscars and Emmys. Most of them form a quiet bedrock to the Disney+ streaming service, where they remain fixtures without the periodic jumping to other services like many other films do.

As the celebration kicked off in early 2023, fans of Disney are revisiting the animated movies that made the company the entertainment powerhouse it is today. But with so many movies, it is hard to remember which movies came first. Disney's earliest works established iconic characters and rewrote centuries-old fairy tales that used to have grim endings to having a happily ever after. They also encompass some of the most important films in the company's canon,...

Parasite's Bong Joon Ho Just Misses Out on Tying Walt Disney's Record for Most Individual Oscar Wins
Bong Joon Ho
Bong Joon Ho came incredibly close to tying Walt Disney‘s Oscar record on Sunday evening.

As the 2020 Oscars wrapped with the exciting news that Parasite had won its fourth award of the night with Best Picture, the South Korean filmmaker, 50, appeared to be on track to have tied Disney for the most individual Oscar wins in a single year.

In addition to Best Picture, Bong’s gripping thriller won in three other categories: Best Director, Best International Film and Best Original Screenplay.

While the individual record stands at four, due to a technicality, it turns out Bong just narrowly...

Win A Family Four Pack Of Passes To The Advance Screening of Born In China In St. Louis
Narrated by John Krasinski (“13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi,” NBC’s “The Office,” “Amazon’s “Jack Ryan”), Disneynature’s new True Life Adventure film “Born In China” takes an epic journey into the wilds of China where few people have ever ventured. Following the stories of three animal families, the film transports audiences to some of the most extreme environments on Earth to witness some of the most intimate moments ever captured in a nature film. A doting panda bear mother guides her growing baby as she begins to explore and seek independence. A two-year-old golden monkey who feels displaced by his new baby sister joins up with a group of free-spirited outcasts. And a mother snow leopard—an elusive animal rarely caught on camera—faces the very real drama of raising her two cubs in one of the harshest and most unforgiving environments on the planet.

Désert vivant (1953)
Tina Fey–Narrated Monkey Kingdom Makes the Wild Familiar
Désert vivant (1953)
It’s rarely mentioned today, but Walt Disney, alongside innovating the animated feature film, was also among the pioneers of the feature-length nature documentary. 1953’s Oscar-winning The Living Desert is still one of the pinnacles of the genre — with its beautiful photography and sly editing, not to mention its gently anthropomorphized, playful depiction of animal life in the Arizona Desert. But perhaps its most remarkable quality is its easy translation of geography and science: The Living Desert opens with an elegantly animated sequence explaining how the Sierra Nevada Mountains keep moisture from reaching the desert, and there’s a comforting simplicity to it, as if Uncle Walt and his filmmakers had succeeded in turning science into fairy tale. That’s not meant as a slight: Generations of kids back then probably first learned about the wonders of nature from these films unspooling through 16mm projectors in classrooms around the country.

Toronto: ‘Act of Killing’ Follow-Up ‘Look of Silence’ Could Also Resonate with Academy
By Scott Feinberg

The Hollywood Reporter

Only one filmmaker has ever been nominated for the best documentary feature Oscar in back-to-back years. His name was Walt Disney and he was nominated — and ultimately won — for both The Living Desert (1953) and The Vanishing Prairie (1954). In those days, an organization (i.e. the U.S. Air Force) or its figurehead (i.e. Disney’s Disney) were often recognized for projects that were actually primarily completed by others who worked for them. That was certainly the case with these nature films.

Tim's Toons: Celebrating Independence Day with Disney
Tim here. It’s Independence Day weekend here in the States, which means that most of you undoubtedly have something better to do than read about old cartoons. But if I promise to keep things short, hopefully you’ll indulge me in chatting up an odd little animated short perfectly timed to the holiday.

I have in mind Ben and Me, one of the oddest one-offs in the history of Walt Disney Productions. Released in November, 1953, it was the studio’s first two-reel animated short, and one of the initial releases under Disney’s own Buena Vista Distribution label, part of a package deal with the nature documentary The Living Desert. But more to the point, for our present purposes, it’s about how a mouse helps Benjamin Franklin write the preamble to the Declaration of Independence. We can wait a minute if you want to process all the ways...

‘Bears’ a gorgeous but untrustworthy new documentary from Disneynature
Bears

Written by Alastair Fothergill and Adam Chapman

Directed by Alastair Fothergill and Keith Scholey

UK and USA, 2013

During its fledgling years as a film studio, the Walt Disney Company helped revolutionize the nature documentary with its True-Life Adventure series. Here, as never before, audiences could thrill to the story of seals, beavers, bears, tigers, and the rest of the creatures sharing space with us on Earth. These days, what is most striking about these early documentaries is less the physical ground they cover, and more that they come from a patient time in filmmaking. Documentaries like The Living Desert and Seal Island featured narration and music, and sometimes attempted to play up the humor of an animalistic situation, but they were still created by people who afforded their presumed audience a base level of intelligence. In some respects, these nature documentaries were born out of the insistence on...

Olivia Holt At Disneynature’s Bears Special Screening At Walt Disney Studios
Olivia Holt, performer of Bears anthem “Carry On” and Star of Disney Channel’s “I Didn’t Do It,” hosted a special showing of Disneynature’s Bears on the Walt Disney Studios lot and yours truly was there this morning for the family screening.

There was a raffle and giveaway for those who brought a new stuffed bear to donate to the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and our tickets, which also doubled as bookmarks, were eco-friendly to be planted later. The logo even reminded me of Disney’s animated Brother Bear.

Check out these photos from this morning’s screening.

In an epic story of breathtaking scale set against a majestic Alaskan backdrop teeming with life, Disneynature’s 2014 big-screen adventure Bears follows a bear family as impressionable young cubs are taught life’s most important lessons.

Mouse House: Disney at the Academy Awards
The Disney Company’s history with the Oscars has been long and cultured. Trivia buffs may know that Walt holds the honor of winning the most Academy Award nominations (59) and wins (26), but Mr. Disney isn’t the only one with the company who has received much recognition. Exclusive: Don Hahn Swims in the Oceans
The legendary Disney animation producer Don Hahn discusses the studio's latest film in their long tradition of making nature documentaries

The Walt Disney Company has had a long tradition of making award-winning documentaries about the wonders of nature. Beginning in the late '1940s and continuing through to the early '60s, the films were the brainchild of company founder Walt Disney and often won Oscars for best documentary like '1953s The living Desert, '1954s The Vanishing Prairie and '1958s White Wilderness. The company's interest in the documentaries dissipated in the '60s with the growth of their animation department and the addition of their popular live-action films. However in 2008 the company announced the creation of DisneyNature, an independent film label that would continue the company's tradition of making big screen nature documentaries. It began with last year's Earth, a film that explores our own planet, and...

Roy Disney obituary
A nephew of Walt, he restored Disney to classic cartoon status

Roy E Disney, who has died from stomach cancer aged 79, was the last member of the Disney family involved in the company and saw himself as the protector of its tradition. As the family enterprise grew into a huge conglomerate, he retained a strong influence. Twice he exiled himself from the business and then returned to lead shareholder revolts which saw the corporation's leadership thrown out and its direction returned to traditional strengths, particularly cartoons.

He grew up with the Walt Disney Co, originally the Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio. His father, Roy Oliver, handled finances while his uncle Walt ran the creative side and was the public face. Mickey Mouse was created in 1928; two years later Roy was born. In some ways, he was the son Walt never had. He attended test screenings when young and later remembered the...
