This is believed to be Japan's first color production to be exported and shown outside of the country.
This was the only play by prolific writer Kan Kikuchi to be turned into a film. His play had a less dramatic title translated into English as "Kesa's Husband." For more than 30 years, many of his novels and stories were adapted into films. He never saw this production; he passed away in 1948 at the age of only 59.
This was produced right after the end of the American Occupation. They were able to import Kodak's Eastmancolor stock and related laboratory technologies from the United States.
In late 1954, The Japan Society sponsored a release of this film in the U.S.
This 1953 production was Daiei's first color film.
