However, one iconic theory on Reddit seems to have given a better solution to the messy ending that The Conjuring: Last Rites. According to this fan, they brought out a brilliant connection between the events that happened in the 2025 film and Valak from The Conjuring 2.

The Conjuring: Last Rites Interviews with Michael Chaves and James Wan
Image
The Conjuring: Last Rites is now in theaters and I had an opportunity to take part in a press day with a handful of other journalists, catching up with the cast and creator of the film. First up, here's our conversation with Michael Chaves and James Wan, where we learn about balancing truth and fiction, a real paranormal encounter, and the future of the franchise:

Taking a fictionalized approach to the well-documented Smurl case:

Michael Chaves: We actually worked with the Smurl sisters. They came on early as we were developing the script into pre-production through production. There's a movie [about the case] called The Haunted, and it's funny because that [film] was actually James's introduction to the Warrens.

How Will The Conjuring: Last Rites Continue Without Vera Farminga and Patrick Wilson?
Image
The Conjuring: Last Rites will supposedly mark the end of the Conjuring franchise, with Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson solving one last demonic case before hanging up their crucifix. According to The Hollywood Reporter, New Line president and Cco Richard Brener said:

This is the last of what we call phase one. We are hopeful that we can make more. Phase two is Tbd.

Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson reacted to this statement in a September 2025 interview with ScreenRant, where they made the following comments:

Vera Farmiga: I love all the speculation!

Patrick Wilson: I love it. Like, Phase One? I’ve never heard that before it was mentioned today.

Last year, the Friday the 13th franchise rights holders at Horror Inc. announced that they were launching the Jason Universe, which would encompass “new Friday the 13th activations that will span a wide range of platforms from entertainment, games, immersive experiences, merchandise and more to be announced @JasonUniverse13 on social media or by visiting the official Jason Universe website.” Now, they’ve shared some information on what’s ahead for the franchise at a San Diego Comic-Con panel, unveiling a teaser trailer for the vignette Sweet Revenge from writer/director Mike P. The Backrooms: Mark Duplass, Avan Jogia, and more join the cast of sci-fi horror film
James Wan
Two years ago, it was announced that some of today’s biggest genre companies – A24, James Wan‘s Atomic Monster, the Stranger Things makers at 21 Laps, and Planet of the Apes producers Chernin Entertainment – are joining forces on a new project called The Backrooms, which will mark the feature directorial debut of director and VFX artist Kane Parsons, who is only 19 years old. A few weeks ago, we learned that Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave) and Renate Reinsve (The Worst Person in the World) are set to star in the film. Now, Variety reports that Mark Duplass (Creep), Finn Bennett (True Detective), Lukita Maxwell (Shrinking), and Avan Jogia (Zombieland: Double Tap) have also joined the cast of the film, which is scheduled to go into production this week in Canada. Of course, details on their characters have not been revealed.

Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, Lukita Maxwell and Avan Jogia Round Out A24’s ‘The Backrooms’ Cast
Image
Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, Lukita Maxwell and Avan Jogia have joined the cast of “The Backrooms,” the upcoming sci-fi horror film from A24, Atomic Monster, The North Road Company’s Chernin Entertainment and 21 Laps Entertainment.

The film also stars Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve with a screenplay written by Will Soodik.

Production begins this week in Canada, with Chernin Entertainment co-financing alongside A24. Both serve as co-studios on the film.

The science-fiction horror film is based on 20-year-old Parsons’ own YouTube series of the same name, which he created and directed as a found-footage horror project. The movie adaptation’s plot is being kept under wraps, but Parsons marks the youngest director in A24 history.

“The Backrooms” traces its origins back to a 4chan creepypasta in 2019 and involves an alternate reality that consists of nothing but an endless maze of abandoned office space, with stark fluorescent lighting and beige-painted...

Box Office: ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ Keeps Dino Franchise Alive With $141M U.S. Opening, $312M Globally
Image
The dinos have a new lease on life.

Universal and Amblin’s Jurassic World Rebirth is coming in ahead of expectations at the Fourth of July box office to hatch a new era for the Steven Spielberg-created franchise. In North America, the holiday tentpole is on course to post an estimated five-day domestic opening of $141.2 million, including $85.4 million for the three days, according to Saturday estimates.

That’s the fifth-best showing ever for the holiday, while the three-day gross would mark the fourth-biggest domestic opening of 2025 to date. That’s no small feat considering July Fourth fell on a Friday this year, meaning many moviegoers were distracted by holiday outings on what’s normally a critical day for new films. To boot, the latest Jurassic World pic has received decidedly mixed reviews from both critics and audiences alike. But there’s no dismissing the power of the Jurassic brand,...

M3GAN 2.0's Very Bad Box Office Opening Raises Serious Concerns For The Future Of Blumhouse
Image
It was not a very good weekend for Universal Pictures and, more specifically, Blumhouse Productions. The house that Jason Blum built released the once-much-anticipated sequel "M3GAN 2.0" over the weekend and, even though the original was an unexpected breakout hit in 2023, its follow-up came in well below expectations. So much so that we must now question what future (if any) awaits this once-promising franchise and, more broadly, what is going on at Blumhouse.

Director Gerard Johnstone's "M3GAN 2.0" opened to just $10.2 million domestically. It certainly didn't help that Brad Pitt's "F1" opened to nearly $60 million and served up a major crowd-pleaser. International audiences weren't all that much help either, with the killer robot sequel pulling in $6.8 million overseas for a $17 million global start. When we consider that the first "M3GAN" opened to $30 million in North America alone, that number looks awfully rough.

The sequel picks up two years...

Box Office: ‘F1’ Zooms to $55.6M Opening and $144M Globally, ‘M3GAN 2.0’ Bombs With $10M U.S. Start
Image
Apple Original Films‘ critically acclaimed F1: The Movie is off to the races.

The Formula One movie — teaming Top Gun: Maverick filmmaker with Brad Pitt — zoomed to an impressive $55.6 million opening in North America in the first major theatrical win for Apple Original Films.

Warner Bros. is distributing the big-budget summer tentpole on behalf of Apple, with the two companies sharing marketing duties. Overseas, it clocked in at $88.4 million for a worldwide start of $144 million to supplant World War Z ($112 million) and rank as the top global launch of Pitt’s multi-decade career, not adjusted for inflation. F1 has a huge advantage in having a lock on Imax screens until Superman opens July 11, along with Dolby Cinemas and other premium large-format screens for part of that time.

“A full throttle final weekend of June is in the books as Apple Original Films’ and Warner Bros.’ F1 The Movie puts the...

James Wan Keeps ‘The Last Train to New York’ on the Rails
Image
James Wan isn’t ready to let The Last Train to New York fade into the sidings. The producer, speaking exclusively to Entertainment Weekly, reaffirmed that the American take on South Korea’s hit Train to Busan remains very much alive, despite Warner Bros. shelving the title indefinitely. “That’s definitely still a passion project of ours,” Wan explained, noting that Atomic Monster has never abandoned hope of bringing the concept Stateside .

Train to Busan (2016)

Rather than a straight remake, Wan says the plan is for The Last Train to New York to run parallel to the original. “Creatively, it takes place in the same world as Train to Busan,” he told EW. “It’s happening epidemically around the world. So if Train to Busan is this particular slice of the story in South Korea, we want Train to New York to be the one set in America. Everything about it is really exciting.

'Train to Busan' American Spin-Off Gets Status Update From James Wan
Image
James Wan, the horror director and producer behind franchises like The Conjuring and M3GAN, says he's still trying to develop an American version of the brilliant Korean horror film Train to Busan. It's been years since the potential project was announced as The Last Train to New York, but since then it has been removed from the Warner Bros. release calendar. However, this doesn't mean that Wan isn't still working to get it made.

The Saw director talked to Entertainment Weekly during the promotion of his latest production, M3GAN 2.0, the sequel to the killer robot feature produced under his banner Atomic Monster. Wan used the opportunity to talk about the status of The Last Train to New York. While the update is a bit disappointing, he says he's still on board to make the film. The producer also says that it is not a remake, but a spin-off centering around U.

‘SOULM8TE’: James Wan’s ‘M3GAN’ Spinoff Is Inspired by Only Erotic Thriller That Almost Won Best Picture
Image
James Wan is all set to take the M3GAN universe to a whole new direction. With M3GAN 2.0 charging in theaters this week, fans who love the killer AI doll won’t have to wait long because an R-rated spinoff titled SOULM8TE is already on the way (via Entertainment Weekly).

Kate Dolan directs the upcoming installment and will swap out the teen-friendly terror story for a much darker and sexier tone, something that might remind you of the 1987 erotic thriller titled Fatal Attraction. So, let’s look at more details about SOULM8TE and what Wan has to say about it!

M3GAN was hailed by reviewers and the audience because it had a mix of campy horror, tech, and anxiety. But now SOULM8TE is ready to explore the adult parts of the same universe.

SOULM8TE: a “Fatal Attraction with robots” set in the M3GAN universe
Amie Donald and Violet McGraw in M3GAN (2022)
Back in April, Blumhouse Productions spent some time in the spotlight during the Universal panel at the CinemaCon event in Las Vegas, and JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray was there to witness an early preview of SOULM8TE, which is “a new movie in the M3GAN universe” that is set to reach theatres on January 2, 2026. Bumbray reported, “Seems similar to Companion. Centers on a sexbot that becomes so obsessed with her “owner” that she kills anyone close to him and goes on a murder spree. Looks more violent (and kinkier) than M3GAN but has the same humor. When a woman she’s about to kill says ‘Women aren’t supposed to be pitted against each other,’ she answers, ‘Don’t start that girl power shit with me.’” Now that M3GAN 2.0 is about to make its way out into the world, Entertainment Weekly was able to dig up some more information on SOULM8TE,...

How ‘M3GAN 2.0’ Star Violet McGraw Kicked Off a Wave of Good Fortune for Blumhouse
Image
The Blumhouse family is counting their lucky stars that they met Violet McGraw’s family.

In April 2020, McGraw was cast as 10-year-old Cady James in Blumhouse/Atomic Monster’s techno horror-comedy, M3GAN. In July 2020, Violet’s sister, Madeleine McGraw, was hired for the banner’s supernatural horror film, The Black Phone. The two films went on to gross over $343 million against a combined budget of less than $30 million, prompting quick sequel green lights, beginning with M3GAN 2.0‘s release on June 27 and Black Phone 2 this fall.

Writer-director Gerard Johnstone’s M3GAN sequel takes place two years after the events of his 2023 picture, and a now 12-year-old Cady is still at odds with her aunt Gemma (Allison Williams) due to her strict rules on technology usage and the lack of quality time they spend together. Gemma has been preoccupied with her efforts to publicly atone for creating a murderous AI doll,...

Box Office Preview: ‘F1’ to Leave ‘M3GAN 2.0’ in the Dust With High-Octane $40M-$50M U.S. Opening
Image
An aging driver and a menacing AI doll go up against each other at the box office this weekend in what’s a test for two challenged genres — Formula 1 racing pics and horror titles.

If box office pundits are correct, Apple Original Films’ critically acclaimed F1: The Movie will leave Blumhouse and Atomic Monster’s sequel M3GAN 2.0 in the dust with an impressive domestic opening of $40 million to $50 million. Warner Bros., which is distributing and helping Apple to market the big-budget summer tentpole, is being more conservative in suggesting in the high $30 million range.

Overseas, the action sports drama is forecasted to take in $75 million for a worldwide opening of $115 million or more against a net production budget of at least $200 million before marketing. (Sources tells The Hollywood Reporter the production budget is far higher, but there’s no way of confirming whether that’s the case.

‘M3GAN 2.0’ Review: The Killer Doll Is Back But In A Kickass Mission To Defeat An Even Greater AI Threat In Fun, Action-Packed Sequel
Image
The killer doll who became the meme heard round the world is back, but she’s a bit different this time around – or is she?

Could this AI robotic invention-turned-terrorist doll that only a child named Cady could love actually redeem herself in an unexpected second act? Of course she can if her first film, made for just $10 million, grossed $180 million globally and in the process became a genuine pop culture sensation and dancing meme that inevitably would spark a sequel. But in the fast-moving world of AI technology, miles ahead now with ChatGPT and other somewhat frightening innovations since M3GAN first hit theaters in 2023, what would a 2.0 version need to look like?

That is what we get in this quickly assembled follow-up that retains the horror elements — and importantly the humor — of the first but really mixes it up with some kickass sci-fi action sequences that actually make...
