Starring and executive produced by Grey’s Anatomy icon, Ellen Pompeo, Good American Family has just dropped its first trailer.

According to Hulu, the drama is “inspired by multiple stories, perspectives, threats and accusations.”

The series previously had a working title of Orphan, but has now officially been titled, Good American Family. Starred in and executive produced by Grey’s Anatomy’s Ellen Pompeo, the series is set to air in eight episodes.

Meanwhile, the series is inspired by the true story of Natalia Grace and the Midwestern couple who adopted her believing she was a little girl with dwarfism. However, things are far more complicated as gradually, it is revealed that she may not be who she said she was.

Ellen Pompeo’s familiar voiceover launches a new story with the anticipated trailer arrival for Good American Family.

“I’ve always considered myself blessed. I’ve known I was put on this Earth to build a world where all kids can feel safe,” she says in the first look at her Hulu series that releases on March 19 (below).

As the trailer continues, however, things are not how they seem.

Good American Family is a dramatization of the real-life story of Natalia Grace. Grace, who has a rare form of dwarfism known as spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita, has had her story told across three seasons of the ID docuseries The Curious Case of Natalia Grace, which concluded in January.

Now comes Good American Family, which focuses on an earlier family who adopted Grace, the Barnett family, who are played by Pompeo (also an executive producer) and Mark Duplass. Natalia Grace is played by Imogen Faith Reid.

Calamity Jane, the excellent Deadwood-set Western musical, is more than just a tune-filled romp through the (in)famous American town: it's a bold dissection of gender, femininity, and sexuality with screen legend Doris Day in the title role. As Jane, Day shirks the conformity of gender roles, opting for cropped hair, buckskins, and a pistol (it's a metaphor) that's more than capable of blasting away those who challenge her. She's rough, tough, and rowdy, and glad to take on traditionally "male" habits and mannerisms. Like Nicholas Ray's monumental Johnny Guitar, another Western with queer themes, Calamity Jane packages its potent subtext in a fabulously entertaining picture.

Even great actors like William Shatner and Doris Day were miscast in Western movies, as their appearances and performances didn't fit the genre. Some modern actors like Ashton Kutcher and Will Smith tested their grit in Westerns, but anachronistic elements of their performance took fans out of the story. Famous Hollywood icons like Dean Martin and Raquel Welch appeared in Westerns alongside legends like John Wayne, but their presence was often distracting and didn't fit the plot.

Even the best actors can't make it work in every genre, and there have been some great actors who were totally miscast in Western movies. Westerns were popular in Hollywood from the '40s until the '60s, almost as many decades as the Old West period actually occurred in American history, and any actor looking to become famous or sustain their success appeared in a frontier story whether they were suited for it or not.

From School of Rock to Calamity Jane, a lot of great movie musicals are having big anniversaries this year. It's a great time to fondly look back at films that influenced you, the bygone era when they were released, and discuss the mark they made on the culture of that era and beyond it. To celebrate its century-long run as one of Hollywood's biggest movie studios, Warner Bros. is releasing 20-minute-long remakes of six of its most classic films. The company, which is now called Warner Bros. Kate Walsh is set to recur in the upcoming 19th season of “Grey’s Anatomy,” returning as Dr. Addison Montgomery, the character she’s played since the Season 1 finale of the medical drama in 2005. Walsh’s Addison was also the central character on “Private Practice” — the first “Grey’s” spinoff — which ran for six seasons on ABC, from 2007 to 2013.

Walsh appeared on “Grey’s” last season in a multi-episode arc, in which Addison returned to Grey Sloan Memorial in order to perform a uterine transplant on a patient, who later miscarried. During her Season 18 appearances, Addison grieved the death of her ex-husband Derek (Patrick Dempsey) with his sister Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) and his widow Meredith (Ellen Pompeo).

The stranger-than-fiction story of Ukranian-born Natalia Grace and her U.S. adoptive parents, who claimed that she was an adult “sociopath” pretending to be a child, is the inspiration for an eight-episode Hulu limited series starring and executive produced by Ellen Pompeo.

As she takes on the Untitled Orphan Project, Grey’s Anatomy star Pompeo will be scaling back her on-screen presence on the ABC medical drama next season to eight episodes. She will remain a narrator and executive producer on the show.

The shocking case, which has drawn parallels to the 2009 horror movie Orphan, made national headlines in September 2019 when Kristine Barnett and her ex-husband Michael Barnett were charged with neglect for allegedly abandoning their adopted daughter Natalia, who has a rare form of dwarfism, in 2013 when she was 9. The parents have claimed that Natalia, whom they adopted when they thought she was 6, is in fact a mentally disturbed adult woman who threatened their lives. Most of the charges against the Barnetts eventually were dismissed; Natalia has denied the accusations that she is a grownup con artist.

2022 Hulu Pilots & Series Orders

The project has been in the works at Hulu for a year and a half. Mike Epps and his managers Dan Spilo and Niles Kirchner had originally obtained the rights to Michael Barnett’s story before taking the idea to the Disney-controlled streamer. Hulu optioned the rights to Michael Barnett in January 2021, and Robbins was brought in to write the script. Pompeo came on board earlier this summer.

Erin Levy will serve as showrunner on the series and executive produce alongside Robbins. Pompeo will executive produce through her production banner Calamity Jane with Laura Holstein. Epps, Spilo and Niles Kirchner also executive produce alongside Andrew Stearn, who at the time of the Hulu sale had a deal at ABC Signature predecessor ABC Studios.

This marks Pompeo’s first major acting role outside of the Grey’s Anatomy franchise since the 2005 feature Life of the Party. Pompeo acted primarily in movies before she was cast as Meredith Grey in Grey’s Anatomy 18 years ago and has been focused on the hit show ever since. In addition to starring, Pompeo serves as an executive producer on ABC’s hugely popular medical drama, which is headed to its 19th season. She is repped by CAA, John Carrabino Management, The Lede Company and Hansen Jacobson.

Robbins is repped by UTA, Aaron Kogan Management and attorney Jonathan Shikora. Levy is repped by WME. Michael Barnett was repped in the deal by attorney Terrance Kinnard.

After spending more than a decade teasing out a story of real-life Black cowboys, Jeymes Samuel was finally on location in Santa Fe, N.M., gearing up to shoot his feature directorial debut, the high-octane Western “The Harder They Fall.” His dream project was about to become a reality.

To help him realize his vision, he’d assembled an all-star cast headlined by Idris Elba, Jonathan Majors and Regina King, fresh off her supporting actress Oscar win for “If Beale Street Could Talk.” Netflix had put up $90 million to fund Samuel’s radical reimagining of what he calls the New West, an epic canvas populated by bandits and lawmen, saloonkeepers and stagecoach robbers, gunslingers and sharpshooters, all of whom are Black. The ensemble — which also features Zazie Beetz, Delroy Lindo and Lakeith Stanfield — had already earned its stripes at cowboy camp, learning to shoot old-school revolvers and ride horses like pros.

New animated feature sales outfit Gebeka International has boarded the coming-of-age tale Sheba, following in the footsteps of legendary African figure the Queen Of Sheba.

It marks a first sales acquisition for France-based Gebeka International which was officially launched last week at the Annecy International Film Festival by founding partners Wild Bunch International and Gebeka Films.

The production was scouted at the 2021 edition of animation co-production forum Cartoon Movie in Bordeaux, where it was one of the hot projects this March.

Kaley Cuoco, the Golden Globe-nominated star of HBO Max sleeper hit series “The Flight Attendant,” is set to play Doris Day in an upcoming limited series over at Warner Bros. Television. The show will be based on A.E. Hotchner’s 1976 biography of the Academy Award-nominated “Pillow Talk” actress’ life, which she historically kept private, from her days as a big band singer to her death at 97 in 2019. She was also one of the last classic legends of Hollywood, as well as a dedicated animal-rights activist. Her other film credits include “Calamity Jane,” “The Man Who Knew Too Much,” “Move Over, Darling,” and “The Thrill of It All.”

Kaley Cuoco will play acting legend and animal rights activist Doris Day in a limited series that is in development at Warner Bros. TV.

The series will be based on A.E. Hotchner’s 1976 biography “Doris Day: Her Own Story,” which is based on numerous interviews with Day herself. There is no network currently attached to the project.

Warner Bros. TV is working with the Doris Day Estate on the project.

Executive producers for the untitled Doris Day project are Cuoco, and from Berlanti Productions, Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and David Madden. Co-executive producers are Suzanne McCormack from Yes, Norman and Bob Bashara, the trustee from the Doris Day Estate. Consulting producers are Jim Pierson, who worked with Day, and Tim Hotchner, A.E. The two films each received 10 nominations, with “Onward” receiving seven and “The Croods: A New Age,” “The Willoughbys” and “Over the Moon” receiving six.

“Soul,” “Onward,” “The Croods: A New Age,” “The Willoughbys” and “Trolls World Tour” were nominated in the Best Feature category. In the Best Indie Feature category, which was created in 2015, the nominees were “Wolfwalkers,” “A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon,” “Calamity Jane,” “On-Gaku: Our Sound” and “Ride Your Wave.”

Netflix led all companies with 40 nominations, with Disney/Pixar receiving 29 and DreamWorks Animation receiving 20. Two very different animated features lead the way as the 48th annual Annie Awards nominations were announced today. Disney/Pixar’s Soul and Cartoon Saloon’s Wolfwalkers scored 10 noms apiece ahead of the virtual trophy show on April 16. Read the full list of nominees in 31 categories below.

Wolfwalkers, a “relatively small European movie,” as the filmmakers described it — is rooted in the history of 1650s Ireland, while Soul follows a middle school music teacher’s journey to “the Great Beyond” via “the Great Before.”

Soul will vie for the marquee Best Feature prize at the Annies, going up against another Pixar pic — Onward, which scooped seven noms — along with Netflix’s The Willoughbys and a pair of DreamWorks Animation sequels: The Croods: A New Age and Trolls World Tour. Pixar’s ethereal “Soul” and Cartoon Saloon’s exquisitely hand-drawn “Wolfwalkers” — the two animated Oscar frontrunners — both grabbed 10 nominations each at Asifa-Hollywood’s 48th Annie Awards (to be streamed live on April 16). Pixar collected another seven nominations from “Onward” to dominate the feature competition.

“Soul” and “Wolfwalkers” are both expected to come away with the top prize from their respective best feature and best indie feature categories, but they compete head to head for direction (Pete Docter and Kemp Powers vs. Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart), FX, character animation, character design, production design, score, storyboarding, and writing. “Soul” was additionally nominated for editorial, and “Wolfwalkers” for voice acting. With Calamity Jane, writer/director Rémi Chayé explored the origin story of the legendary American frontierswoman of the same name, digging into her childhood and the ways in which she defied the gender conventions of her time.

Produced by Maybe Movies, the French-language animated adventure picks up with the young Martha Jane Cannary in 1863, as she’s traveling with her family up to Oregon. Along the way, her father is badly injured, and conflict emerges when she strives to assume responsibility of her caravan.

Winning the Annecy International Animated Film Festival’s Cristal Award for Best Feature last June, the Oscar contender has been praised for its uniquely vibrant, painterly style.

Below, Chayé explains the way in which he hit upon this style on his 2015 debut feature Long Way North, also touching on the historical research that informed Calamity Jane and the challenges in bringing his latest feature to life.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Thursday revealed the 366 feature films that are eligible for consideration at the 93rd Oscars, which are set to air April 25 live on ABC.

The total number of films is up from last year’s 344 films in contention.

This year’s list was compiled based on tweaked eligibility rules implemented because of the coronavirus pandemic, which has pushed the ceremony to its latest date ever. For this year, feature films had to open by February 28 in a commercial motion picture theater for a seven-day qualifying run in at least one of six metro areas: Los Angeles County, New York City, the Bay Area, Chicago, Miami and Atlanta. Drive-in theaters open nightly were included as qualifying venues, as were films intended for theatrical release but because of the lockdown made available first via streaming, VOD service or other broadcast.

Indie Sales has acquired Jimmy Keyrouz’s feature debut “Broken Keys,” which was part of Cannes 2020’s official selection and represented Lebanon in the Oscar race.

“Broken Keys” is a follow-up of Keyrouz’s short “Nocturne in Black,” winner of a flurry of international awards, including the BAFTA Los Angeles Student Film Award.

The movie was scored by music composer Gabriel Yared (“The English Patient”) and produced by Antoun Sehnaoui at Ezekiel Film Production, whose credits include “The Insult,” “Raw” and “Clouds of Sils Maria.”

Set in 2013 in a war-torn village in Islamic-State controlled Syria, the film follows Karim, a pianist who placed his last hopes in his instrument. When an Isis soldier destroys his piano, he leaves his home to embark on a dangerous journey to find the missing parts he needs to rebuild his piano.

“Broken Keys” was partly shot in Mosul, Iraq, in the last Islamic State stronghold.

“Calamity Jane,” Rémi Chayé’s critically acclaimed animated feature vying for an Oscar nomination, is set to roll out on The Animation Showcase, a streaming service dedicated to the industry.

The hand-drawn “Calamity Jane,” which marks Chayé’s follow up to “Long Way North,” will be the first animated feature film to be available worldwide on the service. Although it won the Cristal Award at the Annecy 2020 Online animation festival, the movie has yet to secure a U.S. distribution deal.

The director-driven feature is represented in international markets by Indie Sales, who previously sold the Oscar-nominated “My Life as a Zucchini,” and the Cannes title “Another Day of Life.”

The French Institute Alliance Française in New York has announced that Rémi Chayé’s Calamity, A Childhood Of Martha Jane Cannary, co-written with Sandra Tosello and Fabrice de Costil will open the fourth annual Animation First Festival. Calamity Jane is voiced by Salomé Boulven. Rémi Chayé joins Michaël Dudok de Wit (The Red Turtle), Michel Ocelot (Kirikou And The Sorceress) and Jean-François Laguionie to become the fourth guest of honour. Chayé’s 2015 film Long Way North (Tout En Haut Du monde), written by Claire Paoletti and Patricia Valeix with a screenplay by Fabrice de Costil will also screen during the festival. The prestigious animation gathering, which normally draws toon heavyhitters from all over the world, will stream June 15-30.

While platforms and broadcasters fight over available content, with kids and family one of the tentpoles of subscriber retention, the market for animation has never been more demanding — both in quality and audience expectation.

One big challenge in making the transition to online is the inability to stream many of the key titles from Annecy’s Official and Contrechamp competitions in their entirety due to licensing rights and other contractual conditions.

However, several studios and key sales agents have confirmed to Variety that they are planning alternative means of promoting their upcoming content while still entertaining eager Annecy badge-holders.

Previously unseen photos of legendary performer Doris Day from the 1950s have been provided to Variety by her estate in celebration of what would have been her 98th birthday and to raise awareness of an auction of her memorabilia taking place this weekend.
