According to December 1950 articles in The Hollywood Reporter and the Los Angeles Times, producer Hal B. Wallis purchased the rights to the novel before it was published for $100,000 ($1.3M in 2024). Wallis intended the leads to be Burt Lancaster and Patricia Neal and that the project was to be filmed at Paramount. It never got off the ground, and Wallis ended up selling the rights to Columbia in early 1953.
Tom's service record reveals he received the U.S. Army's Distinguished Service Cross medal. That is the second-highest award for valor in combat next to the Medal of Honor. He also appears to be wearing the ribbon for the Purple Heart as well.
The left shoulder patch on Tom's uniform is for the U.S. Eighth Army, which was the command organization for the U.S. Army in Korea during the war. As of 2024, it is still headquartered in South Korea. The four hash marks on his left sleeve indicate he had been stationed overseas at least 2 years.
At one point Dr. Owen accuses his future father-in-law, played by Ray Collins, as sounding like the District Attorney. Shortly Collins would have a lot experience with DAs as he joined the cast of the long-running series Perry Mason (1957).
Mildred Dunnock plays the mother of a doctor. She previously portrayed a doctor in The Girl in White (1952). One of her iconic film roles was as Mrs. Rizzo - the woman in the wheelchair who is pushed down the stairs by Richard Widmark as Tommy Udo in Le Carrefour de la mort (1947).
