Audiences and critics are divided on the merits of Baz Luhrmann's Faraway Downs, a six-part miniseries starring Hugh Jackman that expands the story told in the panned 2008 drama Australia. While general TV consumers enjoy the 2023 Hulu series, critics feel it's a bloated and unnecessary addendum to the underwhelming 2008 historical epic. Of course, critics aren't always right, and in the case of Faraway Downs, they missed the mark.
A deeply personal tale for Luhrmann, Faraway Downs effectively functions as a corrective director's cut, allowing the venerated Australian visionary to tell the story as he sees fit. The qualitative results are more in line with the audience's reception than the critics' cynical dismissal, putting Australia on par with the hit series Yellowstone and, even better, akin to what Quentin Tarantino did with The Hateful Eight. Critics need to check the pulse of what appeals to non-critics and reassess Faraway Downs at once.

An A-list Oscar winner wants to check into The White Lotus and HBO needs to make this happen! Currently in its third season, The White Lotus has become one of the hottest shows on TV. The dark comedy changes up its cast every season to tell a different tale of some wealthy folks at a fancy island resort who are soon pulled into murder and other bizarre events.
The show has won huge critical acclaim and big ratings thanks to the high-powered cast and the way each season unfolds the key mystery. Its accolades include Emmy Awards for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series and Jennifer Coolidge winning an Emmy for her turn. It’s also earned a couple of Emmys for creator/writer/director Mike White.
Season 3 is currently airing with a great cast, including Walton Goggins, Leslie Bibb, Carrie Coon, Parker Posey, and more. The drama has already been...

After the erotic drama Baby Girl, Nicole Kidman continues her divisive streak with a certified Rotten thriller. Kidman began acting in the 1980s with Australian films like the action-comedy BMX Bandits and the critically acclaimed Dead Calm before achieving international stardom. Her Hollywood breakthrough came in 1990 when she starred opposite Tom Cruise in the NASCAR love-story Days of Thunder, spawning a variety of leading performances from Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut to the black comedy To Die For.
In the early 2000s, Nicole Kidman's performances continued with back-to-back Oscar-nominated roles from Moulin Rouge! to The Hours, the latter scoring the actor her first Best Actress win with her portrayal of Virginia Woolf. In 2017, she delivered her first Emmy-winning performance in HBO’s drama series Big Little Lies. A few years later, she received another Oscar nomination for her performance asLucille Ball in Being the Ricardos. Kidman's career spans over three decades,...

The late Sir Christopher Lee has left a profound mark in every aspect of the entertainment industry and held a just as profound legacy outside of it. If you want to get a feel for what cinema was like in a given year, looking at that year's best picture nominees would seem to be a good place to start. After all, only between five and 10 movies have received such a distinction annually, and since people voting work in the entertainment industry themselves, it's understandable they'd choose the cream of the crop, right?
Wrong!
It shouldn't be hard to find at least five amazing films each year, yet every so often, the Academy honors something that wasn't a hit with critics or audiences. People are quick to point out the worst Oscar best picture winners ever, like "Crash" and "Green Book," but when you expand that to nominees, you really wind up with some dreck (with a couple even taking home the big prize). For this list, we took the worst 10 films ever nominated based on their critics' Rotten Tomatoes scores.

We’ve all seen or heard about Romeo & Juliet. It’s one of the most eminent love stories ever written. But while the authentic play is a classic, it’s also been done a million times. Shakespeare’s version is full of fancy old English, dramatic monologues, and a bleak ending that makes you want to yell at the screen.
But what if we told you there’s a new version of Romeo & Juliet coming that’s absolutely different? A version that’s modern, stimulating, and full of music that actually slaps? That’s exactly what Verona’s Romeo & Juliet is bringing to the table.
This remake is a pop musical—think Moulin Rouge! meets Hamilton but with the greatest love story of all time at its heart. And it isn’t even based on Shakespeare’s play. Instead, it tells the real-life story from 1301 that inspired...

The 30th annual Critics Choice Awards took place on Friday, February 7, at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California. Three films—Wicked, Emilia Pérez, and The Substance—each won three awards. However, none of them claimed the top honor of Best Picture, which went to Anora. Interestingly, Anora didn’t win in any other category that night.
Jon M. Chu, director of Wicked, won Best Director, making him only the third filmmaker to win the award for a musical. The others were Baz Luhrmann for Moulin Rouge! and Damien Chazelle for La La Land. Chazelle later won an Oscar for directing La La Land, but Luhrmann and Chu didn’t even receive Oscar nominations for their films. Wicked also took home awards for Best Production Design and Best Costume Design.
Emilia Pérez won Best Foreign Language Film, Best Original Song for “El Mal”, and Best Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldaña.

John Leguizamo is the latest star to join the cast of Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey.” He will appear alongside previously announced cast members Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Benny Safdie and Jon Bernthal.
Universal shared last month that the film “is a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new IMAX film technology. The film brings Homer’s foundational saga to IMAX film screens for the first time.”
Homer’s ancient Greek epic poem “The Odyssey” remains one of the oldest pieces of literature still read by modern audiences. It chronicles the story of Greek hero Odysseus during his tumultuous journey home following the Trojan War.
“The Odyssey” is due in theaters on July 17, 2026. Nolan is set to write and will produce with Emma Thomas under their Syncopy banner.

Final Oscar Predictions: Could ‘Emilia Pérez’ Make History and Will the Directors Branch Snub Women?
In the year without a frontrunner, the doors are still wide open. I’m predicting three films will tie for the most nominations with 10 each: “Conclave,” “Emilia Pérez” and “Wicked.”
Jacques Audiard’s crime musical “Emilia Pérez” is poised to dominate, and if it can tack on a tech nom or two, the Netflix film could become the most nominated non-English-language film in history, surpassing “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” (2000) and “Roma” (2018). The streamer’s primary awards pony could potentially go even further. On an ideal nomination day, if it lands nods in all of its “on the bubble” categories — such as cinematography, sound, and two extra bids for supporting actress (Selena Gomez) and original song — it could secure 14 nominations, tying with “All About Eve” (1950), “Titanic” (1997), and “La La Land” (2016) as the most-nominated films of all time. Notably, “La La Land,” also a musical, is the only one to lose the best picture.

It’s a Broadway smash!
It, of course, refers to “Bombshell,” the fictional musical-within-a-musical at the center of “Smash,” a new stage adaptation of the beloved cult favorite, much hate-watched TV series that ran for two seasons on NBC from 2012-2013. Like the television series, created by Theresa Rebeck and described by Vulture as “one of the messiest shows to air on network television,” the stage version follows the process of mounting “Bombshell,” a jaunty musical about the life of Marilyn Monroe. In the first-look image, set outside the fictional show’s Broadway house, a brightly lit marquee boasts such raves as “Amazing!” “Stunning” “Amazingly Stunning!” At the center of it all is Marilyn, wearing the iconic white dress from “The Seven Year Itch,...

Following The Film Stage’s collective top 50 films of 2024, as part of our year-end coverage, our contributors are sharing their personal top 10 lists.
By the time this list is published, I will be an official inhabitant of Lyon, France, the fourth different city in the fourth different country I’ve lived in over the past four years. While packing my apartment in Madrid, I found myself playing comfort movies, rather than music, as background accompaniment. Having some of my favorite characters recite lines that have become part of my core memories gave me the strange sense of having something I have begun to crave more as I age: a permanent place to call home.
In fact, I need my film family to come live with me every time I arrive in a new city. In recent years I’ve developed a christening ritual: I unpack my clothes and objects and play The Wizard of Oz,...

Last month, we got confirmation that a live-action remake of Disney's 2010 animated classic Tangled is officially in development, and the project may have found its villain.
According to scooper Daniel Richtman, Agatha All Along star Kathryn Hahn is being eyed to play Mother Gothel. If the actress - who was recently nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance in the Disney+ series - does land the part, she will likely return to play Gothel in a spin-off focusing on the character.
Though nothing has been confirmed, Disney is believed to be developing a number of baddie-centric live-action projects to tie-in to the planned Villains Land Disneyland attraction. In addition to a Mother Gothel movie, we have heard that Queen of Hearts and Snow Queen films are also in the works, and this is said to be why the Hercules adaptation was repurposed to focus on Hades.

Nicole Kidman has never been a risk-averse actor. For every commercial notch in her body of work, be it Bewitched or Moulin Rouge!, there’s a Birth or Dogville: films that mine the darker depths of humanity, often to the extreme. Babygirl may not linger in those shadowy corners for quite as long, but is nonetheless a reminder of Kidman’s gutsy choices and no-holds-barred approach to performing.
In this film, directed by actor-turned-filmmaker Halina Reijn (who made 2022’s excellent Gen-z murder-mystery Bodies Bodies Bodies), Kidman plays high-powered tech- executive Romy, who we immediately meet in the final throes of leg-buckling sex with Jacob (Antonio Banderas), her husband of nearly 20 years. Moments later, she steals away to another part of their family home and secretly climaxes to the flickering glow of submissive porn on her laptop.
Dickinson is impeccable; as Samuel he brings an elusive yet calming presence with a slow half-smile.

Tom Cruise is often called ‘The Last Movie Star,’ and for a very good reason. Over his five-decade career, he’s become one of the most famed names in Hollywood, drawing crowds with his blockbuster roles.
Think Top Gun, Mission: Impossible, and, of course, his signature heartthrob status. But beyond the splendid, tempestuous roles, there’s a side of Cruise that often gets overlooked. That side comes out in the 2004 thriller Collateral, where the movie star played a hitman.

When you look at relationships—whether personal or professional—sometimes, the strongest bonds are built on respect, trust, and a shared sense of purpose. And while tabloids are quick to spin tales of romance and drama, the truth is often quieter and more grounded than the headlines suggest.

Take Tom Cruise and Maha Dakhil, for example. The pair recently found themselves at the center of rumors when they were spotted sharing a meal at a restaurant in London. Their cozy, “touchy-feely” demeanor sent the rumor mill into overdrive, with many questioning if their professional relationship had crossed into romantic territory.
But as the old saying goes, things are not always as they seem. According to those close to the duo, while they clearly share a deep friendship, their connection is far from anything romantic.

It didn’t take long for Tom Cruise to move past Nicole Kidman after their separation in 2001. When Kidman was reportedly aching over the breakup, Cruise got involved with Vanilla Sky co-star Penélope Cruz. Just months after his earlier relationship broke down, Cruise was seen on a vacation with Cruz, something he had allegedly planned with Kidman.

Nicole Kidman is one of the most well-known and celebrated actors today, so it is unsurprising that she has been nominated for numerous awards. Born in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1967 and raised in Australia, Nicole Kidman became interested in acting from a young age, and she eventually dropped out of high school to pursue acting full-time. After appearing in several Australian films and television shows, she began to rise in popularity with films like Days of Thunder and Far and Away and became a household name by the mid-1990s.
Today, she is considered one of the best actors of the 21st century and has her own production company. Likewise, with the December 25th release of her new thriller Babygirl, Kidman is back in the spotlight. From the film's premiere at the Venice International Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival, Babygirl has already received impressive reviews, currently holding an 82% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The following contains spoilers for Earth Abides Episode 4, "Predators," which debuted Sunday, Dec. 22 on MGM+.
Aaron Tveit is showing off a new -- and somewhat unsettling -- side of his talent in Earth Abides. Moulin Rouge! is one of the most visually stunning movies to be released in the 2000s, and if you liked Emilia Pérez, you should watch Moulin Rouge! next. Surprisingly, the two movies are visually similar despite being different genres. It was a bold choice to make the crime-centered story told in Emilia Pérez into a musical, but Moulin Rouge! was the perfect story to tell through this medium. Moulin Rouge! is a tragic romance story with an 89% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which was nominated for eight Academy Awards, winning two of them.
Emilia Pérez has a grittier setting than Moulin Rouge!, but a similarly tragic ending and a compelling leading actress. The story centers on the transformation and redemption of a trans drug cartel kingpin who fakes her own death and begins a new life. While Emilia Pérez has been controversial, it has also been widely praised for its make-up,...

Jon M. Chu has photographic evidence. Before he directed “Wicked,” the hit adaptation of the Broadway musical about a pair of witchy BFFs, Chu was an extra on “The Secret World of Alex Mack.” And that Nickelodeon series, part of the TV diet for anyone growing up in the 1990s, marked the directorial debut of Shawn Levy, who would go on to make “Stranger Things,” “Free Guy” and last summer’s “Deadpool & Wolverine.” The two are meeting in New York to discuss their journeys to the top of Hollywood’s A-list, as well as their talent for making unabashedly commercial movies, featuring heroes and heroines with extraordinary abilities, that are also deeply personal. But before they get to that, Chu shares a screen grab of his fleeting moment being directed by Levy.
Levy is stunned, then reflective about those early days. “I remember thinking, ‘It’s happening,’” he says.

Babygirl star Nicole Kidman explains her weirdest filming rule while on-set, and says there’s one director who makes her break it. A five-time Oscar nominee and one-time winner, Kidman is used to appearing in critically acclaimed movies, and often she’s the main reason for the films earning such praise. The star is indeed back in the thick of it this awards season, with her new A24 movie Babygirl already scoring her a Best Actress Golden Globe nomination. The erotic-thriller releases in theaters on December 25, 2024.
It’s hard to question Kidman’s process after so many years and so many awards, but there’s one aspect of her approach that may nevertheless seem odd, and it involves a rule she has about never looking at video playback on-set. Though Kidman is seemingly adamant about this rule, not all directors are keen to let her avoid looking at the monitor,...

Ewan McGregor's spy thriller accurately depicts the Russian mafia in one clip that an expert calls the "most dangerous and the scariest." The Scottish actor is widely known for his portrayal of the Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars prequel trilogy – including The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and Revenge of the Sith – which grossed nearly $2 billion combined at the box office from 1999 to 2005. In 2022, Ewan McGregor reprised the role in the Disney+ miniseries, Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Outside Star Wars, McGregor has showcased his versatility in films from a wide range of genres, starting with his breakout role as a drug addict in Trainspotting. He went on to star in the musical Moulin Rouge!, the war movie Black Hawk Down, the fantasy drama Big Fish, the thriller Angels and Demons, the LGBTQ-romantic comedy I Love You Phillip Morris, the supernatural horror Doctor Sleep, and the DC movie Birds of Prey.

Nicole Kidman could make Golden Globes history come nominations morning, Dec. 9. If she gets in for both the A24 film “Babygirl” and the Netflix miniseries “The Perfect Couple,” that would put her at 21 career citations and set the record for having the second-most noms for an actor. Leonardo DiCaprio’s Surprising Moulin Rouge Audition Fail (Photo Credit – Facebook)
Imagine Leonardo DiCaprio singing “Lean on Me.” Sounds wild, right? It didn’t go as planned when he auditioned for Moulin Rouge’s lead role, Christian. Despite being a rising star, fresh off Romeo + Juliet, DiCaprio had one major hiccup: his voice. According to the actor, his singing was atrocious. The audition involving DiCaprio, director Baz Luhrmann, and a piano player didn’t improve. Leo remembers, “When I hit the high note, he just turned to me. ‘Yes, D, I don’t know if this conversation should continue.’” Ouch. So, after all, Christian’s poetic soul wasn’t to be voiced by DiCaprio.
While DiCaprio had the looks and charm for the role, the musical chops just weren’t there. Enter Ewan McGregor. The Scottish actor stepped in, crooning his way into the hearts of Moulin Rouge fans...

For film fans, the next best thing to actually watching movies is talking about movies. There's not much in this life that's better than having a great conversation about the films that move us, exasperate us, confuse us, and change us. This is probably why we love when celebrities get asked about their own favorite movies, whether they're listing their Letterboxd top four or gushing about their five favorites to Rotten Tomatoes. It's simple: we learn more about people, and love them more, when we get to see them light up talking about the movies they love. Esteemed actor Morgan Freeman has shared his five favorite films with Rotten Tomatoes twice now, and his choices are wide-ranging and unexpected.
The first time the Oscar-winning star of such films as "Million Dollar Baby," "The Dark Knight," and "Driving Miss Daisy" was asked about his all-time favorite movies, in 2011, he dropped a...

It’s safe to say that when Josh Brolin gets riled up, he doesn’t mince words. The actor, 56, widely praised for bringing Thanos to life in the MCU, has recently stirred the pot over what he sees as yet another Oscar oversight. This time, he’s got his sights set on the Academy’s failure to nominate Dune director Denis Villeneuve for his visionary work on the 2021 sci-fi epic. After a highly-anticipated wait, Wicked is finally making its big-screen debut and its Oscar chances are already being discussed. The musical is such an onscreen spectacle that its being split into two parts and it has Universal on its side. Last year, the studio won big at the Academy Awards this year when Oppenheimer took home Best Picture and six other awards, including Best Director for Christopher Nolan. It has the opportunity to do so again in 2025, though its safe to say that Wicked and Oppenheimer are two very different movies.

Last month saw streaming platforms settle into their annual cozy season with new fall TV shows and autumn film favorites. This December, Hulu and Disney+ are hunkering down with premieres for several animated TV series, a solid selection of holiday fare, and feel-good movies both old and new.
Disney+ will bring its classic characters together for “Mickey and the Very Many Christmases” as well as “Disney Parks Magical Christmas Day Parade.” It will also premiere “The Simpsons Christmas Double Episode,” “Doctor Who: Joy to the World,” and “CMA Country Christmas” to honor the season. Top non-holiday picks include the return of “Marvel Animation’s What If…?” (kicking off December 22 with new episodes premiering daily for eight days), “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew,” and “Elton John: Never Too Late.”
Over at Hulu, the divisive new horror flick “Cuckoo” starring Hunter Schafer is set to stream alongside a robust catalogue of various other movies.

Nicole Kidman is an icon in the world of Hollywood for a reason. Bringing a layer of mystery to her roles while simultaneously seeming like the most welcoming person in any cast, the actress is almost paradoxical with her acting. From recent works like Babygirl to older classic projects like Moulin Rouge, she is ingrained into the very fabric of the film industry.

While there are more than a few iconic works that Kidman has starred in her career, there is one film that caters to a completely different audience. In 1998, she starred in Practical Magic alongside Sandra Bullock. The film was so iconic that it is currently getting a sequel.
However, this is not surprising considering the rare dynamic that Kidman and Bullock shared.

Clint Eastwood might've appeared in 14 films after "Unforgiven" but his Oscar-winning directorial effort really does feel like a fond farewell to the genre that defined his career in front of the camera. For many, his stint as Will Munny, a worn down gunman making one last stand, sits as one of his finest and he could've hung up his acting hat for good there and then in one of the best Western movies of all time. For his co-star, Morgan Freeman, though, there's an earlier role rooted in Eastwood's time in the Old West that outshines even that.
Speaking to Rotten Tomatoes in 2023, the five-time Oscar nominee (one of which he won for his performance in Eastwood's "Million Dollar Baby"), was asked about his favorite films. Of his five truly fascinating choices, one of them was Eastwood's own cold-blooded 1976 cowboy movie "The Outlaw Josey Wales." The film saw Easwood play the titular character,...

Few actresses of her era take as many chances as Nicole Kidman. The Oscar- and Emmy Award-winning actress has been one of the industry’s most sought-after performers since the early 1990s, and appeared in everything from splashy musicals like “Moulin Rouge!” (which netted Kidman her first of five Academy Award nominations) to historical fiction like “The Hours” (which won Kidman the Best Actress Oscar for playing Virginia Woolfe) to psychological thrillers like “Eyes Wide Shut” (where she starred opposite her now-ex-husband Tom Cruise) to blockbuster superhero movies like “Aquaman.”
And that’s just on the big screen. In recent years, Kidman has acquitted herself exceedingly well in a spate of prestige television series, winning an Emmy for her nuanced work in “Big Little Lies” and scoring a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for “The Undoing.”
One of her biggest challenges was her turn as Lucille Ball in Aaron Sorkin’s 2021 film “Being the Ricardos.

John Ford's success at the Oscars speaks to the director's reputation as one of the greatest filmmakers of all time. Over the course of his long career in the industry, Ford worked with many of the most prominent actors in Hollywood from the 1920s to 1960s, pumping out a long list of memorable hits at the box office. Many were born from his collaborations with John Wayne, but it's important to note that his own directorial style, not necessarily Wayne or any other actor, that made Ford the Hollywood legend he is today.
Ford's work represents a very distinctive version of America, and his films often centered on specific themes and genres. Ford is well known for making Westerns such as Stagecoach, The Searchers, and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, among many others. John Ford was also well known for having served in World War II and for...

In recent years, the theatre world has witnessed a massive influx of Broadway shows based on films. Stage adaptations of Hollywood hits like Back to the Future, Moulin Rouge, and Beetlejuice have been dominating Broadway, both in terms of ticket sales and critical reception. Even lesser-known works, like the 2007 Israeli film, The Bands Visit, have been brought to the stage, and even gone on to win the coveted Tony Award for Best Musical. Now, with the massive success of these adaptations, audiences must begin to wonder what films may be getting reborn on the stage next.
Of course, not every major motion picture can be seamlessly translated to a different medium. Big-budget films that rely on complex visual effects and numerous locations are often impossible to properly convey on stage. However, films that rely on only a handful of characters within a relatively contained setting typically have excellent potential when...

Bauhaus frontman Peter Murphy has returned with “Let the Flowers Go,” a collaboration with fellow ’80s vocalist Boy George.
Featuring Murphy’s belting baritone and George’s dramatic vibrato, the duet is a power ballad ode to transformation and becoming rooted in your identity in your younger years. “I’ve been changing/ And mamma don’t know,” they sing in harmony. “Let her tears fall/ And make the flowers grow.” Stream “Let the Flowers Go” below.
The song was produced by Martin “Youth” Glover of the band Killing Joke, who had worked with both Murphy and George on their respective solo records. “Let the Flowers Go” dates back to 2014, when Murphy was working on his solo album Lion. Youth presented the unfinished track written by George and himself to Murphy, who added to the track and presented it back to George.

Lacma’s Art + Film gala entered its brat era over the weekend.
Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s marquee fundraiser took place on the grounds of the L.A. cultural institution on Saturday night as the rebellious spirit of its musical headliner Charli Xcx and her culture shifting brat album seemed to permeate the festivities. The carpet got a green-hued makeover, Anna Wintour praised honoree Baz Luhrmann’s frenetic creative spirit and how he once convinced Rihanna to dance on a table at the Met Gala, Kim Kardashian caused a stir by wearing another rare piece of fashion history and Chloe Sevigny demanded the crowd “make some fucking noise” for Charli, who turned Lacma into an electric after hours with a quick set featuring her Sweat Tour mate Troye Sivan. It even rained a little, a very brat-coded thing for Mother Nature to do in a city like Los Angeles.
