Ewan McGregor's Forgotten Box Office Bomb From 2013 Gets New Praise From VFX Artists
Image
Ewan McGregors 2013 film Jack the Giant Slayer is garnering new praise from VFX artists more than 10 years after its release, according to a recent Screenrant article. The movie, which grossed $197 million at the box office, and had a budget of nearly $200 million, was recently broken down in a video by Corridor Crew. The film also starred Nicholas Hoult, who will portray Lex Luthor in the Dcu.

Corridor Crew commended how authentic-looking the giants were. They noted that the monsters often moved at a slower pace, but the giants moved much more quickly, making them even more terrifying and entertaining for viewers. The video also spotlighted how the speed of the giants made them seem more real.

Here are some of the comments from the video:

"When they move quick, it's just way better. It's the same with zombies. When they stop being slow, they get way scarier. 65 giants, oh my God!

Ewan McGregor's $197M Fantasy Bomb Praised By VFX Artists Is One Of His Most Underrated Movies
Image
Ewan McGregor has starred in many great works of sci-fi and fantasy, but not all of his high-profile roles have garnered great success. Many fantasy movies are almost perfect but are missing certain elements that would set them apart from the best of the genre. Some of McGregor's projects fall into this category, even when their budget and visual effects are substantial and impressive. However, a film's box office performance doesn't necessarily mean that it's not worth watching. Revisiting some of McGregor's most underrated fantasy movies is a great opportunity for fans to rediscover his work.

Certain fantasy movies bomb at the box office but have comebacks, and Jack the Giant Slayer is no exception. This could be because the budget for the movie was so high that recouping it proved difficult. Conversely, the film's marketing might have failed to convey its message properly, meaning viewers were confused by...

Thats So Sick: Ewan McGregor's $197M Fantasy Box Office Bomb Gets Glowing Review From VFX Artists
Image
VFX artists are impressed by the visual effects in Jack the Giant Slayer. The 2013 film starring the Dcu's new Lex Luthor, Nicholas Hoult, and Star Wars' Ewan McGregor proved to be a box office bomb, only grossing $197 million after being made on a nearly $200 million budget. In a twist on the classic "Jack and the Beanstalk" fairy tale, the film revolves around Jack (Hoult) facing an army of terrifying giants after unintentionally opening a portal to their realm. He must work with allies to protect his kingdom from this threat.

In a video breaking down the visual effects in scenes featuring the formidable giants, Corridor Crew praised the authentic-looking speed and detail in Jack the Giant Slayer.

They noted that many onscreen monsters are often depicted in a slow-moving fashion, such as The Walking Dead's zombies, but that the giants' speed in this film makes them refreshingly terrifying and entertaining to watch.

Shelley Duvall’s ‘Faerie Tale Theatre’ Was an ‘80s Pop-Culture Fever Dream
Image
Legendary actress Shelley Duvall has sadly passed away at the age of 75. Movie fans know her best for her stellar work as Wendy Torrance in The Shining, and for playing Olive Oyl in the big-screen version of Popeye — although her work in the Harland Williams vehicle RocketMan has yet to be fully-appreciated.

Anyone who grew up in the ‘80s or ‘90s likely also remembers Duvall as the host and creator of Faerie Tale Theatre, one of the most bizarre, charming and idiosyncratic children’s shows in the history of TV. Each episode presented an hour-long, live-action adaptation of a familiar (or occasionally not-so-familiar) fairy tale, featuring a double-take-inducing cast of Hollywood legends and upstart comic stars.

Where else could you find Elliott Gould playing a giant in Jack and the Beanstalk, or Joan Collins as a witch trying to capture Hansel and Gretel? Or Howie Mandel as a character named...

‘Santa and the Ice Cream Bunny’ Is a Hauntingly Odd Christmas Fairy Tale That Should Be Kept from Children at All Costs
Image
On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.

First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.

Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.

The Pitch: When the Going Gets Tough, Santa’s Reindeer Get the Hell Out of Florida

Despite the fact that Santa, ice cream, and bunnies are three topics famously enjoyed by young children, letting your kids anywhere near “Santa and the Ice Cream Bunny” feels like a surefire way to make them swear off Christmas altogether and embark on a path towards atheism.

I’ve seen enough excruciatingly bad Christmas specials in my day to accept that our collective standards for holiday content are significantly lower than they are for anything that...

These 20-minute shorts, which will be available to stream on Max later this year, will update the films through today’s more diverse and inclusive understanding of the world, with what Wbd’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion team calls “representative casting, storytelling and narrative.”

Six filmmakers have already been chosen by a committee that includes Wbd senior vp Dei in North America Karen Horne alongside individuals from Warner Bros. 2023 Olivier Award winners: ‘My Neighbour Totoro,’ ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ …
Image
The top honorees at the 2023 Laurence Olivier Awards were plays that focused on cultures outside of London. “My Neighbour Totoro,” which is based on the beloved Japanese film of the same name from Studio Ghibli, won six trophies, the most of the night, including Best New Comedy, Director, and four craft categories. A revival of the American classic “A Streetcar Named Desire” by Tennessee Williams claimed three: Best Play Revival and for lead Paul Mescal and featured player Anjana Vasan. Meanwhile, the British-based “Prima Facie,” which is set to bow on Broadway this month and will thus compete at the Tony Awards, took home two prizes for Best Play and for star Jodie Comer.

The only other productions to win more than one trophy were all musicals. “Standing at the Sky’s Edge” won two of the top prizes: Best Musical and Best Original Score or New Orchestrations. “Tammy Faye,...

Jack and the Beanstalk
Image
It’s a case of cold-blooded, premeditated nostalgia: Abbott & Costello’s fantasy musical is innocent comedy rooted in early ’50s kiddie entertainment — a vein perfectly suited to the duo’s talents. Lou Costello makes a fine underdog fantasy hero, too. The feature restoration is quite an achievement for the 3-D Archive, as cine-archeology was required to understand the arcane color process ‘SuperCineColor.’ But the show’s slapstick action, clever songs and dippy dancing are finally back and looking great. The labor of love extends to the extras: excised scenes, background material, some words from the only surviving actor, a learned piece on the color process and a surprise guest appearance by the Creature from the Black Lagoon.

Bud Abbott, Lou Costello, and Dorothy Ford in La poule aux oeufs d'or (1952)
Woodlands Dark And Days Bewitched: A History Of Folk Horror - Jennie Kermode - 16995
Bud Abbott, Lou Costello, and Dorothy Ford in La poule aux oeufs d'or (1952)
Folklore is the oldest manifestation of shared storytelling. It has been a part of cinema since the very early days, when it inspired works such as Alice Guy-Blaché’s The Cabbage Fairy and George S Fleming’s Jack And The Beanstalk. But what of folk horror? Kier-La Janisse’s outstanding documentary traces the history and form of this influential cinematic tradition across decades and continents, and does it all with such verve that, at three hours and 14 minutes in length, this densely packed film still flashes by.

It begins with what Janisse calls the big three: Michael Reeve’s Witchfinder General, Piers Haggard’s Blood On Satan’s Claw and Robin Hardy’s The Wicker Man. All three have a strong personal relevance for her and al three continue to be celebrated as classics decades after they were made. They’re as good a hook as any on which to hang...

Tell Me A Story: Kevin Williamson to adapt Spanish series
Kayti Burt Dec 4, 2017

CBS All-Access is looking to add to its Star Trek: Discovery success with Tell Me A Story, from Vampire Diaries creator Kevin Williamson.

So far, CBS All-Access has had relatively little when it comes to new material to lure subscribers past its pay wall. Star Trek: Discovery has been a good start to bringing paying customers into the fold, but one hit show does not an on-demand service make.

Perhaps CBS All-Access' new planned drama from The Vampire Diaries' Kevin Williamson will help. According to Deadline, the streaming service has given a straight-to-series order to Tell Me A Story, an adaptation of a Spanish TV series that puts a dark psychological twist on classic fairy tales.

Set in modern-day New York City, the first season of Tell Me A Story will weave elements of The Three Little Pigs, Jack And The Beanstalk, and Little Red Riding Hood...

Gigantic: Disney scraps its Jack And The Beanstalk movie
Simon Brew Oct 11, 2017

Disney has - for now - pulled the plug on its planned animated movie, Gigantic.

Walt Disney Animation Studios has pulled the plug on Gigantic, its long-announced Jack And The Beanstalk-inspired movie. The film had originally been given a 2018 release date, before recently being shunted back to 2020. But now – and this hasn’t happened with an announced Disney animated feature in as long as we can remember (King Of The Elves, based on a Philip K Dick story, is the only one that springs to mind) – the film has been scrapped altogether.

Ed Catmull, president of Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios, released a statement that reads:

It’s impossible to know when we begin a project how the creative process will unfold, and sometimes, no matter how much we love an idea or how much heart goes into it, we find that it just isn’t working.

Gigantic (2010)
Disney's Jack and the Beanstalk Animated Movie Is Dead
Gigantic (2010)
After spending more than two years in development, Disney is giving the axe to its Jack and the Beanstalk project Gigantic. Disney has yanked the November 25, 2020 release date for this Jack and the Beanstalk musical, with the studio stating that they hit a creative wall, so to speak, with the project. Here's what Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios president Ed Catmull had to say about why they pulled the plug on Gigantic.

"It's impossible to know when we begin a project how the creative process will unfold, and sometimes, no matter how much we love an idea or how much heart goes into it, we find that it just isn't working. With Gigantic, we've come to that point, and although it's a difficult decision, we are ending active development for now. We are focusing our energies on another project that has been in the works, which we'll be sharing more about soon,...

Disney Cancels Their Jack and the Beanstalk Animated Film Gigantic
Disney Animation has been developing and new animated film project called Gigantic that was supposed to be released in 2020. The movie would have been a reimagining of the classic fairytale story Jack and the Beanstalk the story of which followed a man meeting a young female giant.

To be honest, I was never excited about this movie anyway. Jack and the Beanstalk has been retold so many different times that another retelling just didn't interest me. Here's a previously released description of the movie:

Set in Spain during the Age of Exploration, Disney’s Gigantic follows adventure-seeker Jack as he discovers a world of giants hidden within the clouds. He hatches a grand plan with a 60-foot-tall, 11-year-old girl, and agrees to help her find her way home. But he doesn’t account for her super-sized personality – and who knew giants were so down to earth?

Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios...

Disney pulls the plug on animated Jack and the Beanstalk movie Gigantic
Not every film which enters development is fortunate enough to make it to the big-screen, and in the case of Disney's Gigantic, their updated take on the Jack and the Beanstalk fairy tale, it appears that the studio has pulled the plug entirely. Disney Scraps Animated ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ Movie, ‘Gigantic’
Disney is putting the brakes on their original animated feature Gigantic, the Jack and the Beanstalk-inspired movie that was set to hit theaters in 2020. Frozen songwriters Robert Lopez and Kirsten Anderson-Lopez were going to write the music. Gigantic was originally scheduled to arrive in theaters on November 21, 2018 and was subsequently pushed back to the 2020 slot. However, THR …...

Win Jack and the Beanstalk: The Real Story on DVD
Author: Competitions

To mark the release of Jack and the Beanstalk on 12th June, we’ve been given 3 copies to give away on DVD.

Jack and the Beanstalk: The Real Story is directed by Jim Henson’s son Brian (The Muppet Christmas Carol, Muppet Treasure Island). Once upon a time, “Jack and the Beanstalk” was a fairy tale, but for Jonathan William Hapsburg Robinson (Jack, for short) it’s a part of history – a giant secret buried in the Robinson family closet for centuries. In order to undo the ancient family curse, Jack must return to a different place and time, to a fantastic world where fairy tales come true. Here a handful of beans really can produce magic, a goose really can lay a golden egg and a beanstalk does indeed reach into the heavens where an immortal giant lives, breathes and swears vengeance for all eternity.

Why the Oscar-Winning Producer of ‘Big Hero 6’ Made Big-Screen Nature Documentary ‘Born In China’
Nés en Chine (2016)
After winning the Oscar for 2014’s “Big Hero 6,” producer Roy Conli was lured to what seems to be a far-flung project: a Disneynature doc, “Born in China,” which explores the life cycles of wild pandas and other native Chinese wildlife. However, he said that it was less about the animals and more about their collective capacity to communicate complex emotions and ideas.

“I’ve always loved the structure of multiple stories,” said Conli, a longtime Disney Animation executive who famously mounted the premiere of “Angels in America” at the Mark Taper Forum in 1992. “There are multiple characters that you need to fall in love with, and they will add up to one story. That was the same with this. You had five species, but you concentrated on three animal families.”

Other Disneynature movies have had more singular topics (“Bears,” “Monkey Kingdom”), but director Lu Chuan’s “Born in China...

Exclusive: Kristen Anderson-Lopez on Bringing 'Frozen' and A Cappella to Broadway
Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Josh Gad, Jonathan Groff, and Santino Fontana in Frozen 'Let It Go' in 25 Languages - Behind the Mic (2014)
Known for writing original music for Disney’s Winnie the Pooh and Frozen, for which she and her husband, Robert Lopez, won an Academy Award and two GRAMMYs, Kristen Anderson-Lopez is now returning to her roots for her latest project: In Transit, an a cappella musical now in previews and officially opening on Broadway Sunday, Dec. 11. The show, starring Justin Guarini of American Idol fame, tells the intertwined stories of 11 New Yorkers navigating the challenges of city life.

Yes, before becoming a sought-after lyricist for upcoming films such as Disney’s Gigantic, Lopez made music with her mouth in the a cappella group Bob Ross Juice Box with In Transit’s book, music and lyric co-writers, James-Allen Ford, Russ Kaplan and Sara Wordsworth. It was there that the idea for a “theatricappella” experience first came together. “We were not fantastic as a group, but I’m really excited that we found our way to writing and sharing...

Newswire: Inside Out’s co-writer turns director for Disney’s Gigantic
Meg LeFauve was one of the writers responsible for breaking America’s hearts into tiny little Bing Bong-shaped bits as a contributor to the Inside Out screenplay. Now Disney has enlisted her to presumably wrench some tears out of you as one of the directors of Gigantic, their upcoming reimagining of the Jack And The Beanstalk story. She’ll share duties with Nathan Greno, who co-helmed Tangled. The story will follow Jack and Inma, an 11-year-old female giant. Like the similarly succinctly-titled Frozen and Tangled, Gigantic will indeed be a musical with songs from Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, the husband-wife team that brought “Let It Go” into the lexicon. It’s scheduled for 2018.

While it’s all contained within the greater Mouse empire, this marks a leap for LeFauve from Pixar to Walt Disney Animation Studios. She also, however, happens to be involved with the company’s Marvel ...

Inside Out Scribe Meg LeFauve To Take Point For Disney’s Gigantic
Meg LeFauve, the prolific screenwriter whose credits include Inside Out and Captain Marvel – to name but two – has been elected director of Disney’s Gigantic following her extensive work during the development process.

The Hollywood Reporter has the scoop, confirming that LeFauve will now co-direct the 2018 animation in tandem with Nathan Greno in a move that evokes memories of Jennifer Lee’s promotion to co-director on Frozen after she too helped whip the project into shape during its formative years. Speaking of which, songwriters Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez have enlisted for the movie gunning to be the “definitive version of Jack and the Beanstalk” following their contribution to Frozen, with Dorothy McKim on board to produce.

First unveiled at last year’s D23 expo, Gigantic will take place during the Spanish Age of Exploration, a fruitful period for European countries that involved countless journeys overseas in search of foreign lands.

Disney Animation just put a woman in the director’s chair for the second time ever
Disney’s Jack and the Beanstalk retelling has a new director: Meg LeFauve — already very much part of the Disney family with screenwriting credits on Inside Out, The Good Dinosaur, and Captain Marvel — will co-helm Gigantic alongside Nathan Greno (Tangled). The Hollywood Reporter broke the news. It marks the second time a Walt Disney Animation Studios theatrical feature has been directed by a woman. Jennifer Lee was the first when she was promoted from screenwriter to co-direct Frozen alongside Chris Buck. LeFauve, similarly, comes to the director’s chair with a writer’s background, rather than the more common path of an animator or storyboard artist to director. Gigantic takes place in Spain during the Age of Exploration and has Jack meeting Inma, a 60-foot-tall, 11-year-old girl, and he agrees to help her find her way home. The film is set for a November 21, 2018 release.

Disney's Gigantic Gets Captain Marvel Writer as Co-Director
Oscar-nominated screenwriter Meg LeFauve is about to make the jump to directing. After writing the Academy Award-winning Pixar movie Inside Out, Disney has tapped her to co-direct the upcoming Disney Animation movie Gigantic. She will be directing the movie alongside Tangled's Nathan Greno.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Meg LeFauve would be making her directorial debut on Gigantic. The movie is said to be an updated take on the tale of Jack and the Beanstalk, a story that has been told quite a few times over the years. The big twist will be that Jack winds up befriending a female giant, instead of just cutting down the beanstalk and killing the giant for the golden goose. Here is the synopsis for the movie.

"Set in Spain during the Age of Exploration, Gigantic follows a teenage adventure-seeker Jack as he discovers a world of giants hidden within the clouds,...

American Horror Story Round Table: "Murde" House
The "true" villains of American Horror Story Season 6 (and what they are after) remain shrouded in mystery but American Horror Story Season 6 Episode 2 actually gave us two known villains to focus on: ghostly nightmare nurses Bridget and Miranda.

The two women were intent on murdering their elderly patients, after opening up an assisted care facility in what is now Shelby and Matt's North Carolina home. They used the first letters of their victims' first names to spell out their favorite word – "Murder" – but stopped short of the last letter.

The working theory? That they were stopped by someone (or something) far more evil than either of them.

For all of those who have been noting eerie similarities between American Horror Story Season 1 and the current season, there is one distinct difference: the first season took place in a Murder House, while the most recent takes place in a "Murde" House.

"Gigantic" Delayed After "Ralph 2" News
In the wake of today's announcement by Disney Animation that the "Wreck-It Ralph" sequel has scored a March 9th 2018 release date, Disney Pictures have now moved up the Jack and the Beanstalk animated feature "Gigantic".

Originally slated for that date, the film will now be pushed to a Thanksgiving launch on Wednesday, November 21st 2018. The project was first announced at D23 last summer with Nathan Greno ("Tangled") set to direct.

In "Gigantic," Jack goes up the tall plant and teams with a 60-foot tall, eleven-year-old girl giant named Inma. He agrees to help her find her way home. On top of the beanstalk, Jack encounters an entire world of giants from lots of different cultures.

Oscar-winning "Frozen" team Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez are set to provide the music.

Wreck-It Ralph 2 Announced
It’s been four years since Wreck-It Ralph hit our screens, and ever since the end credits rolled, we’ve been waiting patiently for the return of John C. Reilly’s lovable Donkey Kong rip-off. Now, that wait is over, with Disney announcing that Wreck-It Ralph 2 is set for release on March 9th 2018, putting back the Jack and the Beanstalk inspired Gigantic, which originally had that release date, to November 21st 2018. We also get our first image from the long sought after sequel, hinting at the fact Ralph and Penelope will be going from the arcade to the Internet. Both Reilly and Sarah Silverman will return as their beloved characters, as well as returning director Rich Moore. Just the announcement would be enough to get me excited, but if Moore and co. can weave the same magic with the Internet as they did with classic arcade games, this movie can’t come quick enough.

First Reviews For Steven Spielberg’s The Bfg Are Mixed
The Cannes Film Festival is now well underway, with many highly anticipated movies making their debut at the prestigious event. One such flick is Steven Spielberg’s The Bfg, which premiered this weekend to a somewhat mixed response. According to the reviews we’ve seen, it’s certainly not a bad movie, but it’s also far from the director’s best.

The issue seems to be that while The Bfg is a faithful treatment of the beloved source material, it relies too heavily on CGI, drags on with too much dialogue and plays it fairly safe, presenting a by the numbers adaptation that may please people who are looking for that sort of thing, but won’t strike a chord with a wider audience.

For more, check out some excerpts below that we’ve gathered from around the web:

The Guardian:

The Bfg is big friendly giant of a...

Today in 2002, the first Broadway revival of Into the Woods opened at the Broadhurst Theatre, where it ran for 279 performances. Into the Woods is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine. It debuted in San Diego at the Old Globe Theatre in 1986, and premiered on Broadway in 1987. Into the Woods won several Tony Awards, including Best Score, Best Book, and Best Actress in a Musical Joanna Gleason, in a year dominated by The Phantom of the Opera. The main characters are taken from the stories of Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel, and Cinderella, tied together by a more original story involving a baker and his wife and their quest to begin a family, most likely taken from the original story of Rapunzel by the Brothers Grimm.

Kevin was briefly among the missing, sending Nora into an emotional, history-is-repeating-itself tailspin and giving Carrie Coon her most intense showcase of Season 2. Although Kevin eventually turned up, the mental damage for Nora was done.

Gigantic Is Disney’s Musical Spin On Jack And The Beanstalk; Animated Film Slated For 2018
Over the weekend, Disney hosted its overly successful D23 expo, detailing early plans for Pixar sequels such as Finding Dory and Toy Story 4, offering the stage to Star Wars: The Force Awakens at one point and, in an announcement that quietly flew under the radar, unveiled its new take on Jack and the Beanstalk in the form of Gigantic.

Billed as an animated musical, the studio’s project will be situated in Spain during the famed Age of Discovery of the early 15th century. With Europe’s superpowers hitting the high seas in search of land, exploration has taken precedent across the continent. But for Jack, he’ll have his eyes trained on the skies after crossing paths with a child princess, one who just so happens to be a giantess.

With Tangled director Nathan Greno behind the lens and a set-up that bears semblance to Frozen, Disney Animation...

Tangled co-director making Gigantic with Frozen songwriters
Walt Disney Animation Studios has a new musical in the works - and it's all about Jack And The Beanstalk...

Just because Frozen may have taken the lion's share of the acclaim aimed at Walt Disney Animation Studios in recent times, it'd be remiss to overlook the terrific Tangled too. A retelling of the Rapunzel story, it was directed by Byron Howard and Nathan Greno, and remains a strong piece of work.

Howard is one of the directors of Walt Disney Animation Studios' next film, Zootropolis. And as for Greno? Well, after making a significant contribution to Big Hero 6, his new project has now been confirmed. He's directing an animated, musical take on Jack And The Beanstalk for the studio.

It goes by the name of Gigantic (having previously been known as Giants), and it's going to centre on an 11-year old giant girl by the name of Imma,...

Disney Announces Gigantic
Nathan Greno
While a lot of what Disney’s Feature Animation team had to show at this weekend’s D23 convention event was for films we already knew something about, it was left to Gigantic to be almost completely new. Director Nathan Greno and producer Dorothy McKim introduced a first look at the film. And though it has been lurking on the IMDb for a while under the title Giants, the movie’s proper synopsis and character information was announced, along with the fact that Frozen song-writing duo Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez will be providing the music.Set in Spain during the age of exploration (so somewhere roughly between the 15th and 17th centuries), this new take on Jack And The Beanstalk finds adventure-seeker Jack heading into the clouds in what starts as a fairly traditional take on the fairy tale. But things soon change when he meets Inma, am 11-year-old...
