In this episode of “After the First 48” titled “The Invitation,” viewers are in for a gripping tale of betrayal and murder. New cards are slowly being revealed for the special upcoming Pokémon Card 151 set for the Pokémon Trading Card Game, including some remarkably potent additions. Due to release in Japan on June 19, there has been no official confirmation of a Western release date at present. However, based on past releases, it is possible that an English version of the set will be released in time for the holiday season later this year.

As the name suggests, the Pokémon Card 151 set showcases the original 151 Pokémon from Pokémon Red and Blue (or Pokémon Green in Japan), including the return of banned Pokémon Kadabra. As such, each Pokémon card in the set shares its number with that Pokémon’s Pokédex listing. The Invitation was Nathalie Emmanuel’s first time being number one on a major studio film’s call sheet, and now she can say that she’s led her first number-one movie at the domestic box office. Jessica M. Thompson’s supernatural horror film opened with 7 million, which was enough to top a quiet weekend at the box office, but a win is a win, especially for a 10 million-budgeted genre pic.

The film follows Emmanuel’s Evie, a floundering New York City artist who takes a DNA test that eventually connects her to a previously unknown English cousin named Oliver Alexander (Hugh Skinner). Sony/Screen Gems’ horror film “The Invitation” is leading the final weekend of the August box office, which also happens to be the lowest-grossing weekend theaters have seen since the weekend before Valentine’s Day.

“The Invitation” is taking No. 1 with an opening of just 7 million from 3,114 theaters, which is just more than half of the 11 million opening that Sony earned with another critically panned Screen Gems horror production, “Slender Man,” in August 2018. “Invitation” did slightly better critically with Rotten Tomatoes scores of 29 critics and 53 audience, but will likely die a quick death theatrically.

The only other new wide release this weekend was MGM’s “Three Thousand Years of Longing,” George Miller’s first film since the Oscar-winning “Mad Max: Fury Road.” The film opened outside the Top 5 with 2.8 million from 2,436 theaters, earning positive reviews with a 70 critics Rt score and a B from audiences on CinemaScore.

Box Office Mojo has just posted the Friday box office numbers and folks, it ain’t pretty. The PG13 horror film The Invitation is leading the box office this weekend with a lower than expected take between 6-7 Million. I predicted this would open under 10 Million but didn’t expect it to go as low as it is. Given the genre and rating, a 10 million plus opening would have been a decent number for a movie that will likely find most of its audience on streaming, but in the end this one is early making a peep theatrically.

That said, it’s still doing much better than any other new release this weekend. Even with a modest prediction of 4.5 Million, George Miller’s 3000 Years of Longing is coming in even lower with a projected 2.9 Million. Critical reception didn’t paint it as a rush to the theaters kind of film and audiences seem to agree.

After a crackling summer season, movie theater owners have been sounding the alarm on the disturbingly light release schedule this fall. And yet, three new films will open in theaters nationwide over the weekend.

Perhaps the bigger issue, in the case of this weekend’s crop of newcomers, is that hardly anyone is making plans to go to the cinema. Of the trio of fresh offerings — Sony’s eerie thriller “The Invitation,” director George Miller’s dark fantasy “Three Thousand Years of Longing” and the John Boyega-led heist drama “Breaking” — not one is poised to make a splash at the box office.

Based on projections, it’ll be a close race between “The Invitation” and last weekend’s champion “‘Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero” to claim the No. 1 spot in North America, with each release on track to bring in around 7 million. And to the victor goes…some pretty anemic bragging rights.

It feels like something of a rite of passage for an actor to try their hand at a good old-fashioned horror flick, which led the conversation when we had the pleasure of interviewing Nathalie Emmanuel and Thomas Doherty for the release of The Invitation.
